Title: Aston Villa vs Wigan Athletic Pre-Match Thread
Post by: cdbearsfan on August 20, 2017, 02:39:32 PM
Tuesday 22nd August, 7.45pm kick-off. League Cup Second Round.

Wigan have started well, this is exactly the sort of cup tie we've messed up in recent years. It could come down to who rests the most players. I expect Johnstone, Terry and Whelan to be rotated. No idea about the others.

I'll go for a scrappy two-one win.

If we do win, nobody else start the pre-match thread for the Third Round as I started the Colchester one, too, and would therefore be deemed lucky.

3-1 to us.

Conor to continue his scoring run with another. Hogan and Bree with the others.

Roberto Martinez for them.

Could be interesting, Wigan have won all of their league games so far.

I'll go for a scrappy 2-1.

With a game on Friday we'll see lots of rotation no doubt. If they're in form we could come unstuck

I'd go something like

Steer

De Laet Chester Samba Taylor

Jedinak Lyden

Adomah O'Hare Bjarnason

Hogan / RHM / Gabby (assuming one of them is fit)

that side with any of the three up top should be enough tbh.

Might be worth giving James Chester the night off too.

Surely Samba and Elphick would be good enough against a League one side?

Hopefully another win, it breeds confidence after all!

Tuesday - Friday is a quick turnaround so I'm not sure we'll see any of those of who will start on Friday feature.  I think Chester could definitely do with a break so wouldn't play him and definitely wouldn't risk Taylor even though we don't have any other real options there.  Would try and keep the same formation as Saturday so we can see possible options for the starting XI and go something like:

                              Steer

Hutton       Elphick       Samba        De Laet

                            Jedinak

Adomah      Lansbury     Bjarnason      Agbonlahor

                             Hogan

I'd start Bree on Friday night so Hutton and De Laet should play and we need to have a look at other options at LB so I would start the latter there.  Looking at that left hand side shows just how short we are there and how in need we are of additions in that area before the window closes.

Just noticed Wigan are top in League 1 with 100% record so they will be full of confidence. Could be very close call this.

They must be prioritising promotion too this season

There has been plenty of comparison to Newcastle last year, but they had a questionable start but got through to the QF of this cup. Winning breeds winning and a win on Tuesday with good performances will make Bruce pick 'in form' players on Friday.

Lose, even with a second string, and the whole club is under pressure again.

Rest the first teamers and play the reserves. Not fussed about the result as promotion is priority. No pressure to go through to next round, would just mean more games.

I care about the result. I want us to win a trophy. Rest a few but put a team out that gives us a good chance of winning. In any case, we need to keep the momentum going after Saturday.

I would like to get through and get as far as we can, but I just think Tuesday - Friday is too quick a turnaround for the starting players.  That would be three games in less than a week.

The same as for Bristol City. There are loads of midweek games in our division, so if we can't handle three games in a week, we are going to struggle to go up.

Doubt we'll be unchanged. As per Colchester, expect to see Steer, Bree, Samba, O'Hare, Bjarnason as starters, plus Green and Davis to go again.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the following line up:

                     Steer

     Bree Chester Samba Bjarnason

Adomah O'Hare Jedinak Lansbury Green

                     Davis

Tues-Fri and Weds-Sat is the same.

Sat - Tues - Fri isn't the same as Sat- Weds - Sat in preparation terms.  The latter would allow for a day off whereas the former probably wouldn't.  It's not the end of the world, but it's not ideal.  As other have said though, Bristol City have got the same schedule so there we go.

I imagine we've played Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday, which would be exactly the same, plenty of times. Most non-league teams will have played Saturday-midweek-Saturday-Monday by the time the Bank Holiday weekend is over. It's no great hardship.

Agree, but I think it will result in quite a few changes to the side tomorrow night.  Not a bad thing in some cases as some of the squad need some game time.

I think Wigan's form and position in the league will work to our advantage - they'll want to get out of the cup to concentrate on going up. I therefore predict, based on this insight and my past record for getting things right, that we will lose 6-0.

Unchanged side. We need momentum and form. By all means make subs when we're way ahead.

They can play Friday as well, perhaps with a slight tweak if necessary that way it's only one or two players adapting rather than a team.

Definitely need to rest a few of them just to avoid injuries and give some much needed game time to a few others, however I would agree that we should stick as close to a winning formula as possible to keep momentum going. Win both these games and they get their rest in the international break full of confidence and in good form.

We can't afford to risk losing Chester, Terry and Taylor through unnecessarily injuries if we don't need to play them; and Steer, De Laet, Bree, Samba, Adomah, O'Hare and Jedinak (if fit) should be given game time...and might be a good opportunity for Hogan to get a few goals if he's fit enough too.

Chester and Taylor will be away with Wales so no break for them and not sure of Whelan is still in the ROI set up.  Onomah and a few others might have England juniors duty and I'm guessing Jedinak will be back in time to head off Down Under.  Does Elmohamady play for Egypt?

I'd rotate a few just to give some game time to the squad, but there's no need to rest players less than a month into a season. Apart from Terry as he's old and a twat, and probably Taylor as we don't have another proper LB so may as well see how his replacement if he's injured/suspended looks.

Back in the day over Easter they would play Friday, Saturday, Monday.
Squad rotation ? What are you talking about ??
Also just one substitute. and he could only be used as a replacement if a player was unable to continue (ie. dead or a necessary limb to play removed or beyond reasonable repair).

An alternative way of looking at it is "AVOIDING INJURY"...we can't afford to lose any of our better players due to a badly timed tackle, over stretching in a challenge, landing on their ankle, or any other unnecessary injury.

I presume Wigan will have seen that squad and will put out what passes as a stronger team for them to give them a good chance of progressing to the next round and making it 5 wins out of 5 for the start of their season. Wouldn't be surprised to lose this 1-2 unless they field their reserves as well in which case 2-1 to us. Likely low attendance will favour them as they're used to playing in half empty stadiums. Unlikely to be a classic - good job it's free

There's no certainty whatsoever that the list of players in that pic is in anyway accurate, correct or genuine.

I'm all for seeing a few of the yutes play tonight. You must be gagging to show what you can do if you get a chance after the plaudits Keinan received over the weekend.

Think we will because our home form is solid and I don't think Wigan will be that bothered about the cup.  How convincing it is will depend on the lineups.  Will go 3-1 Villa.  Green, Hutton, Gabby for us.

Wigan, 4 wins in 4 games so far this season. Be tougher than Colchester.

I wouldn't go putting any money on those 3, not one of them in the squad tonight.

O'Hare, Adomah, Hogan, Richards, McCormack, Suliman, Abdo, Lyden, Cox

I have a horrible feeling about this game .With the Bristol City game on Friday ,we will play a reserve side .Also Wigan have started the season well and are a bit of a bogey side at Villa Park .Will go for a narrow 1-0 Villa win but would not be  surprised at all if we lose

And their Montegos (choice of three colours).
Brian Montego was not even on the drawing board at the time I know as I had just started work at the Austin in the drawing office😊

I know we are seeded but surely we can't field 18 players?

Edit: oh you said squad😀

Why do people think this cup game is a free shot and a mere league game on Friday is more important?

Because getting pasted by someone in the later rounds isn't as important as getting promoted from the has beens league which may mean a clear out of our decent players next year.

We don't need to rest anyone at this stage of the season. Play the best 11 and win the match.
I agree.
Get the game won early and then make changes.

Totally this

davis will be chomping at the bit

Agree. Play your 1st 11 and if anyone gets injured an opportunity will be created for someone else.

Rest Terry and drop Hutton. Keep the winning momentum. I know he won't do this and we'll fuck up.

Think Bruce will go with something like this

Steer

DeLaet
Samba
Chester
Taylor

Jedinak
Lansbury
O'Hare

Elmo
Hogan
Green

I wouldn't mind seeing RHM, Lyden and maybe even Mitch Clark given some game time.

Richards? Don't even think it.

Oh come on, he's great to have around the place. He's been so much fun over the last few seasons.

Actually, I'd rather play with 10.

Only reason i'd play Richards is in the hope he has a blinder and it convinces some dumbass at another club to sign him. Sadly that requires a) Richards having a blinder and b) someone being that stupid. Neither is very likely.
