Nice!
-
Poor in the first half, much more solid in the second and two good goals to win it. It's becoming the Bruce way of late to grind out wins which right now is just fine. 5 wins in 6 is however you look at it, very encouraging.
Superb support who withstood the rain. Have a safe trip home everyone

merge with Leeg
-
A two-goal away win with a clean sheet and a new name on the scoresheet. Wonderful!
-
We Woz Robbed :-[ We Robbed 'Em 8) ;D

15 points from 18 and 1 goal conceded. Boring boring Villa!
-
12th and on the move.
Fulham and Wednesday look like they've hit the wall.
We couldn't could we...

That's quite impressive, boring is the new black.
-
Good to see that we can win even if Kodj doesn't score.
-
12th and on the move.
Fulham and Wednesday look like they've hit the wall.
We couldn't could we...
Just makes those two terrible runs more annoying. Two of those defeats turned into wins and I'd probably fancy us to do it.
-
Sounded like Wigan deserved to get something out of the game but they didn't and that's why they are where they are. Not pretty but the papers will just show a win, a clean sheet, and a first goal for Hogan. Glad to get another win before the international break - now we've got the chance to get our recently injured players fully fit, and hopefully get Andre Green back, and carry the momentum into April. I'm convinced we'll finally gel and pummell someone around, say, third week in April
-
It's all a bit somber walking back along the towpath
-
And two different scorers, and headers. Solid, weathered Wigan's pressure.
Get in!
-
Green bilge-water slurping fuckers fucked.
-
12th and on the move.
Fulham and Wednesday look like they've hit the wall.
We couldn't could we...
Top half of the table!
-
Love this winning lark!
-
Finally a great bit of football for Hogan's goal. We can do it. Three points is the least the fans deserve for having to watch that game.
-
Well done Villa! With wins will come confidence and everything improves from there. It's a great little run of results now.
-

Get the hell out of Wigan, it's what happens

Norwich, Reading and Fulham all to come next month.
I don't think we'll do it either. But maximum points against that lot knobbles them at the same time it boosts us. Promotion 9-pointer.
-
Well pleased with the three points and clean sheet.
-
Well done Villa, you're making me happy again.
-
A word for our keeper today who kept us in at a very dodgy stage before the opener was scored. You can see his confidence rising and Im sure he is going to have a good run in to the end of the season.

highlights (http://www.skysports.com/football/wigan-vs-a-villa/358565)

Win all 8 games left (5 at home) gives us 75 points. Is that enough for 6th place?

I don't think we will do it but if by some miracle we are challenging for that last spot teams above will start to really feel the pressure. Either way it shows now how it is possible next season to get promoted. We're not doing that much very well and yet we are winning games.
-
A game we should win. A game we did win, don't care how we did it but we did. On to the next now.
-

It usually is isn't it? Sheff Wed & Fulham should get around that though.

highlights (http://www.skysports.com/football/wigan-vs-a-villa/358565)
Their keeper was shocking for the first, decent delivery from Hourihane mind
Lovely calm finish from Hogan for the second, much needed
I know it was only the highlights but Jedinak seemed a bombscare at centre half?
-
Just 2 wins. 2 bloody wins from those 2 absolutely shite periods at the start of the season, and after Christmas and we'd be right in it.
-
Crap day, crap performance but a win is a win.
-
Sat in the car park waiting for the traffic to die down.
Sat with friends from work who are Wigan fans. Good voice from the Villa fans
Very disappointing performance today.yes we won, but we were bloody awful. Man of the match was Jedniak, Shane about his blind ball which should have cost us a goal. Until we switched it it was difficult to see the game plan, apart from getba bit of luck or a bit of magic from Kodja.
Johnson has atrocious kicking skills, and his punches were not reassuring
Bree is very tidy, I like him. Thought he was very unlucky to be taken off.
First time I've seen Taylor in the flesh today and he was pretty solid, made some decent runs forward. Wasn't helped much by the very static Amavi wanting the ball short, instead of pushing down the line
Jedniak won everything in the air, the man you want in your team
Chester was steady'ish
Houlahan was a little sloppy at times and could have cost us. Should have hit the target with an effort
Gardner was fucking awful. It was his shit ball which put Jedniak in the area which contributed to his mistake, and he did the same in the second half. Not good enough to remain at Villa
Hutton improved when he went to full back, as he was neither a midfielder or a defender in the first half
Amavi needs a rocket up his arse. When Taylor he the bell he surely has to stretch play, not stay still. He improved with some good runs with the ball second half, but I was still unimpressed
Adomah had a poor game today, though it was his decent cross which picked out Hogan. I'd certainly not play him centrally again
Kodja was okay today but no clear chances, or real memorable moments . Lost the hall in good places when players had advanced, which could have cost us
Lansbury, I saw him st half time and could not hit a ball to Greslish's feet. He was an upgrade on Gardner though
Hogan doesn't win anything when the ball is in the air but showed great movement for his goal. He took it well too. Needs the balls played in places to give him a chance
Bruce really needs to sort a pattern of play out, as it is poor.
-
A win's a win in truth we were awful
-
Crivens! I'm loving this strange winning-again-lark. Super bit of football which led to Hulk's clinical finish too. Fair play to SB & CC for evidently sorting out the shambles that RDM & Co created. A strong finale to the season will work wonders for confidence levels the forthcoming campaign: so here's to building that head of steam. UTV :)
-
Just watched the highlights on sky. Seems we had the luck today we didn't get at Huddersfield
A problem with Jedinak at CB is that because he's always liable to give the ball away very sloppily, it will be in a very dangerous area.
Fair to see both our goals wouldn't be scored in the premier league either
That all sounds really negative. But the main point is that we won when maybe we didn't deserve to and that's a nice habit to get into. As long as we're also putting together some better performances too.
If he does want to play two up top I'd still like to see us play a diamond. I reckon it could suit a few
-
The key to all this is sorting out the defence. Keep clean sheets and your two thirds there. If anyone starts complaining about defensive football like when they moaned with MON's long ball game (that was also effective) they can just f**k off.

When MON was spending like Spurs, producing performances like Bolton and finishing below miserly Everton you mean? He definitely did a decent job for us. But with that much subsidy we could have done a lot more with a more progressive and adventurous manager
-

There's really no need for that.
We won, why start effing and jeffing at people and trying to hook an argument?

That's good of him to say but he never even acknowledged us at the end. Pissed wet through but a win is a win. 5 clean sheets in 6 is an impressive stat in anyone's language. In a pub full of villa in Wigan now so happy days all round

Even if we don't think so at the moment, it's nice to be the ones with momentum and in the assendancy though. If we can maintain you never know who might wobble above us . We must be near the top of the form table

We won we won we won.. what more to say other than we won won we won won won!
-
Another win which stands us in good stead for next season. Nailed on promotion in my opinion.
-
Form guide looks good. Being the ever half empty, it'd be nice if we started to show some form but for the time being I'm very happy to just have that winning feeling back
-
We won we won we won.. what more to say other than we won won we won won won!
Exactly ! But to read most of the posts on here you'd have thought we had just been stuffed by Wycombe or Coventry. FFS,we're not Yanited fans. Not bothering to read this thread anymore.

Thank God for that, everyone, wasn't Fred Crump an absolute moron?

Well he can't read as just about every post so far has been folks enjoying the win.

By not bothering to read the 40 odd previous posts is my guess. I'd ask him but he's not bothering to read any posts after his either. The big girl.
-
An away win with a clean sheet....we can't really complain can we...be great if we did that every away game.
-
Nice goal from Hogan as well. He'll become a big favourite at the Villa.
-
For those that can't watch the Skysports highlights:
-
Very poor first half
Bruce got the substitutions right and we looked loads better with Lansbury and Hogan.
Quick word for Johnstone - had probably his best game since Spurs in the cup. Made some important saves throughout.
-
Bruce on Radio:

Why should he? He doesn't care if you're there or if you're not there. Honestly, did you contribute to the win? No, you didn't.
-
Fucking hell. We won playing 10 defenders. All we did was hoof it. We're shit. Bruce out!
(Said roughly 2/3% of the posts, yet they're the responses that will get the replies...I've had a couple of beers...)
-
12th and on the move.
Fulham and Wednesday look like they've hit the wall.
We couldn't could we...
Just makes those two terrible runs more annoying. Two of those defeats turned into wins and I'd probably fancy us to do it.
So this. Six just six more points and you would fancy us for the playoffs .
-
Only seen the highlights but like the way we took a short corner for once rather then just lumped it into the box and a cross from open play for s headed goal is also a treat.
Playing poorly and still winning is the sign of a team with a bit of backbone. Something we haven't had for a long long time.
-
As the Argus might have said...Form Rate: Poor
However it was a welcome win.
I can't recall any other meaningful efforts on goal apart from the goals, and the second one was well worked, but at least we improved after the substitutions. The midfield for the first hour was woeful. Johnstone did very well though he's been taking lessons from the Bozzie school of kicking.
-
In 2012/13 season I voted the Wigan meat and potato pies the best that season in the Premier League. The 3 such pies I purchased today were very disappointing, a pale shadow compared to 4 years ago.
I must add I didn't eat all 3; the other 2 were eaten by my sons.
-
Only because they were disappointing. So you fobbed 2 of them off on your lads!
-
Only because they were disappointing. So you fobbed 2 of them off on your lads!
Child abuse. Alive and kicking in rain sodden Wigan. Shame on you BC54!
-
Ha ha; they're aged 28 and 24 (the lads not the pies!).
-
And hats off to the Wigan stadium DJ for playing Dobie Gray - 'out on the floor' , just before kick off.
Bit of northern soul in Wigan , naturally .
-
Well you know you are going places when you can win with 8 proper players on the pitch.
Gardner. Aboslute shite.
Hutton - right midfield. He cannot defend for a start. He cannot get touch tight because he has no pace. Towards the end of the first half he was bounding down thr right. His first touch was so heavy he ended piling into the defender who got booked. Yet we sing his name for effort.........speaking of which........
Kodaja ......the laziest bastard on two feet and greedy too boot.
I was at the game today and for Mr K I would give 1.
-
Only seen the highlights but like the way we took a short corner for once rather then just lumped it into the box
Shows how long it is since I've seen us do that: my first thought was 'Matthias Breitkreutz'
-
Sky Sports (http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/10807077/steve-bruce-feels-aston-villa-have-more-to-give-despite-wigan-victory)
"They gave us a really tough game, that's how difficult the Championship is," said the Villa boss.
"They were really game. They've had a change of manager, change of formation, change of shape and they caused us a few problems.
"It's good to see us show a little bit of resilience. But, if we're being honest, we've got to be better than what we've been today. At least we stuck at it and we got a win, and that's what this league is all about."
Villa's quality was shown on the hour mark when they sent on fit-again £15m striker Hogan along with Henri Lansbury to tip the game their way.
And Bruce insists the sky is the limit as he adds quality to an already-winning formula.
"To be fair to the lads who've been playing, and I've had to play those lads, they've done great for us," he said.
"We've had nine or 10 players missing from the first team and we've still managed to win five out of six.
"A big pat on the back to them, but it is nice that we've got some big players coming back. We've got an international break now and the big worry is will they all come back [unscathed]."
-
Just 2 wins. 2 bloody wins from those 2 absolutely shite periods at the start of the season, and after Christmas and we'd be right in it.
If we had accumulated as many points from Bruce's last 14 games as we did from his first 14 - -we would now have 60 pts
From that position, we would have needed 5 wins from last 8 games to secure 75 pts - this would have secured a playoff place in 9 of the last 10 seasons-- including 3 on GD
If we now win every match the maximum pts we can now finish with is 75........
In other news, my aunt has now got balls and has become my uncle :o
-
13 wins 13 losses
A 0-0 draw next up and it'll be 13 13 13 39 39
-
The 2 awful runs we had totaled 21 games, 12 at the start of the season and 9 after Boxing Day. We took 13 points from those 21. We've wasted nearly half a season's worth of games and still may end up not too far off the top 6.
-
Form guide looks good. Being the ever half empty, it'd be nice if we started to show some form but for the time being I'm very happy to just have that winning feeling back

We did it last week as well and scored

For those that can't watch the Skysports highlights:
cheers Rudy. Looked like they pretty much battered us and we sneaked 2 goals?
-
Thanks very much for posting, RudyCF.
-
Only going from those highlights, so may be talking shit, but Jedinak doesn't look like a centre-half to me.
-
Crap day, crap performance but a win is a win.
Was transport playing up as having been to Wigan away several times I'm surprised to see it being described like that.
Good allocation and tickets, quick train and good selection of pubs on the high street, one of the better away days out there.
-

only listened to the game but who scored has him as our third best player. He's consistently up their in their ratings
But definitely disconcerting to play a cm at cb given what we spent
-

He's good at racking up the counting stats that are used in calculating Whoscored's overall match rating - aerial duels won, tackles, interceptions, whereas the rating doesn't really account for the stuff that you worry about when it comes to him, like the dodgy passing.
I do think that we very much ought to buy a good CB to pair up with Chester and keep Jedinak in midfield for next season though.
-
There's been too many games this season where we have been far the better side and came out with only a point or nothing at all. I like that we can find ways to win games when we don't play well.
-
I will take a CB pairing of Mile Jedinak with James Chester and clean sheets over any combination of Baker/Richards/Elphick/Clark and soft goal roll overs.
For all his faults, and Jedinak has many, from poor passing to lack of running ability to having a face like a split horsehair sofa, he has what we have lacked in defence for years. He has grit and he has presence.
We got Southgate from Palace as a midfield player. He was rubbish until we made him centre back. He was all over the place for a few games then rose to his present status.
-
Only going from those highlights, so may be talking shit, but Jedinak doesn't look like a centre-half to me.
Aside from the dodgy backpass he was fine, just headed everything away. We did miss him in midfield I felt though.

I got soaked, there were no taxis and few buses. The only time it stopped raining was during the game, it then started again for the walk back to the station. Then no seats on the train. Good pre match pub though.

The argus form guide - happy days remembered
Good win. As others have said take this form into next season and we won't be far off
-
Good win and another welcome 3 points but as others have said, we were awful. Only the keeper stood out for us. Also, I can't remember the last time i went to an away game and saw so few home fans. It's just a shame the drummer bothered to turn up.
-
I thought the Wigan fans got behind their team well considering.

I'm just not sure we can play a midfield without Jedinak - or another defensive midfielder

A day when I was glad that I always keep a full set of waterproofs in the car
-
Left ground, got home, got changed, out to a friend's birthday celebration in Manchester, home again, bed, so this is the first opportunity to comment.
Dire first half, some improvement in the second. Sloppy passing and possession squandered far too many times in midfield (that's you, Gardner). Lack of pace going forward still an issue. A better team that Wigan would have won comfortably.
Positives. There appears to be a cohesiveness and team spirit - that's what winning does. Although brought together by default, the current partnership in central defence looks reasonably secure. Bruce made the necessary changes before the 70th minute. Hogan has opened his account. Goalkeeper played well and kept a clean sheet. We won. The DW PA still plays a good selection of Northern Soul classics.
-
Another shout out for the DW DJ and his Northern Soul classics, Out on the Floor just before kick off and I walked to my seat to Heaven must have sent you by The Elgins.
Very average performance all told but much better second half. 3 Pts job done, looking up the League rather than down is nice.

Ah didn't realise the weather was that poor in the North west last year. It was a bit of a trek if you walk it along the canal.
Wigan "pier" is amazing though. ;)
-
Another win and another clean sheet, roll back the clock and we were all begging for this sort of form, hope we can carry on and finish the season in style so we go into next season with some good form.
-
Another win and a clean sheet, which is great. Need to take the next step of playing well and absolutely mullering sides like Wigan.
-
Sat in the corner of the main stand with the massed Villa ranks on my left - I was certainly not the only one particularly when Hogan scored and his family in front of me went mental !
Felt we were fairly comfortable but fair play to Wigan for having a go they clearly needed the points but lacked a cutting edge.
No one was outstanding but no one played poorly in my opinion.
Stuck in their car park right next to the ground afterwards but at least we were dry !
-
There's been too many games this season where we have been far the better side and came out with only a point or nothing at all. I like that we can find ways to win games when we don't play well.
There's been plenty of wins under Bruce where we've underwhelmed though, probably most of them. We need to play better consistently to get automatic promotion next season.
-

Almost all of the games under Di Matteo where we had a million shots on goal. Just think back even to how many times we hit the bar or post. I don't have the stats in front of me but I bet we are in top 3 of sides for chances created and around the bottom for goals scored as a percentage of chances created. We've been incredibly wasteful.

Barnsley away; Huddersfield at home for the most part; Preston at home

Far better side in those games? Behave yourselves.

Brighton we deserved to win, Huddersfield we were certainly the better team first half.
-
being the 'far better team' would imply that we dominated those games, in reality we had 15 minutes of pressure at Brighton away and had nothing at Huddersfield once they went 1 up.
-
Can anyone settle a train discussion, did Wigan get a mention in KLFs grim up north ditty?

Yup, between Widnes and Leeds.

It certainly did. ;)

I can't comment about the Hudd game (as I didn't see it), but I went to the BHA match - & felt that we were certainly the better side over 90 mins. That said, I have to confess that I was just delighted to not bear witness to the hammering I had hitherto feared!

We were the better side a few times under RDM only to blow it by conceding a late goal.

Better side i'm not disputing, by far the better side im definately disputing.

Probably the only time that the teams that Villa and Bromsgrove were playing on the same day have appeared in the lyrics of a song
-
Pedant alert...... It was released as 'The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu' rather than 'The KLF'
However, since they were the same people doing the same thing I don't really know why I'm posting this

Can anyone settle a train discussion, did Wigan get a mention in KLFs grim up north ditty?
This is like the old panini stickers

Bruce on Radio:
We persevered and a bit of quality worked for us in the end however today above all it's the fans who won it for us today.
That's good of him to say but he never even acknowledged us at the end. Pissed wet through but a win is a win. 5 clean sheets in 6 is an impressive stat in anyone's language. In a pub full of villa in Wigan now so happy days all round
Why should he? He doesn't care if you're there or if you're not there. Honestly, did you contribute to the win? No, you didn't.
Quote from Steve Bruce after the game
" I have to say that the fans got us the result today"
Well???
-
Thing is I'm past being fist pumping, YEAH screaming, and promotion dreaming to the point that this win is just a relief that we haven't lost again as much as anything.

I've been to Warrington several times. Are you up for Swapsies ?
-
Yeah cool - Doncaster?
-
Got loads of those, have several hundred Harrogate swaps and would be more than happy to erase all memories of ever visiting Wigan.

Everyone check their "spotters book" then!
-
I've been through or past Lytham and Morecambe on the way to Fleetwood, does that count? Also I've been to York train station.

There's been too many games this season where we have been far the better side and came out with only a point or nothing at all.
Other than Forest at home, I can't think of another example.
Brighton away 🤔
-
If you're classing 15 minutes of pressure as being by far the better team then fair enough.

We were the better team throughout that game, you undermine your stance by repeating such nonesense.

Take the goggles off, a draw was about right, we have been that poor for such a long time that that performance is now considered being better through out? Nonsense indeed.
-
I couldn't care who was the best team. We won. That'll do.

The teams that do well in this league tend to be functional and efficient. Make fewer mistakes than the opposition and you will probably win the game. Our defeat at Newcastle illustrated it perfectly. I haven't seen one team this season where I think they are a joy to watch, the Championship is a grind. That is what we are now doing and long may it continue if it gets us out of this division next season.

Brighton was a game we should have won. We were the better side I thought.

Indeed, but we didn't win that game which is the point of the original discussion.

Knowing a few Newcastle fans it is widely regarded among their fans that they have been the worse team in a massive proportion of their games and yet they are top of the leagueIf you're classing 15 minutes of pressure as being by far the better team then fair enough.

It is widely accepted that Newcastle have been less than convincing in a lot of their games this season and yet they are cantering to the title. Football is simple....score goals and stop the other team scoring goals, the rest is just superfluous BS to give people something to talk about. Ask any manager in the world whether they would rather win a game or entertain the fans and you will get the same answer of all of them.
We won the game, that means we were the better team. The rest is subjective.
