Gareth Southgate obviously.
And I remember Steve Staunton managing the Republic of Ireland.
There must have been others..?
-
Peter Withe managed Thailand and Indonesia.
-
Peter Withe managed the Thai and Indonesian national teams.
-
As told to you first by the great man's shin.
-
Sir Brian and Jersey. Does that count?
-
Chris Nicholl was assistant manager of Northern Ireland.

Chris Nicholl was assistant manager of Northern Ireland.
Talking of Northern Ireland, Danny Blanchflower managed them in the 70s (specifically, Wikipedia says, for 16 games between 1976 and 1979, winning 4 and drawing another 4). I'm thinking he must be the first ex-Villa player to try his hand at international management..?
-
George Graham made Arse great again.
-
Sir Brian and Jersey. Does that count?
I was going to say "no" because he was Director of Football but, upon conducting some further research, it transpires that sir Brian did actually step into the dugout himself (to great success, obviously).
So says Wikipedia:
Little was appointed as the Jersey FA's Director of Football in November 2014, overseeing the work of first team manager Jimmy Reilly. Reilly went on to lead the islanders to their first Muratti Vase Final victory in four years the following May. Months later, Jersey announced their intention to join UEFA, and when Reilly stepped aside in early 2016 Little was appointed to replace him. Little won the Muratti in May 2016, but stepped down as manager the following month and reverted to his position as Director of Football; allowing him to concentrate on his commitments at Aston Villa.
-
Didier Six has managed both Togo and Mauritius
-
Ron Atkinson was on our books as a player, though he didn't play in the first team.
Noel Blake managed Exeter. I well remember his debut at VP; there was a gasp from the crowd each time he went near an opponent. Of course, it went rapidly downhill from there on several fronts.
-
Which continent is the country of Exeter in? :P
-
I had a vague recollection that Dwight Yorke had briefly managed Trinidad and Tobago, but Wikipedia says he was Assistant Manager. Nonetheless, I'm sure that will be sufficient for him to talk himself up as a possible candidate the next time Brazil are in the market for a new manager.

Just looked up Big Ron, Alan Curbishley and Big Jim Cumbes.
I was convinced one of them had been an international manager; BJC could have been in cricket, as well.
Sadly, no.
I 'm now left wondering why not Big Alan?
-
Savo Milosevic is assistant manager of Montenegro.

Similarly, I was sure that I'd find that John Gregory had managed somewhere like Kuwait or one of the Stans, but, no, he has confined his career to ever more obscure club management.
-
Ooooh!
Dr Jo!
He's managed Czechoslovakia, Australia, Slovakia, Oman and Malaysia!
But he never played for Villa. Darn it.
-
He didn't play for us though.
-
I did not realise how many clubs Dean Saunders had managed.
Given that the first was Wrexham taking over from Sir Brian, he must have been odds on to manage Wales later in his career at that point.
-
Without taking the thread down the 'which Henrik Larsen' route the blond Danish that we had briefly in the squad but didn't play was also mgr of Faroes at one point
-
I think Noel Blake and Kenny Swain have both managed young England teams and Allback has been involved with coaching the Swedes.
-
Danny Blanchflower managed Northern Ireland in the 1970s.
-
Eric Houghton
EDIT - didn't manage England. I was thinking of Joe Mercer as manager.
-
Marcus Allback has been assistant coach of Sweden. ooosh!
-
Did I dream it or was Jimmy Rimmer once the coach of the Peoples' Republic of China.
Googling's cheating

Duckagogo is where it's at using Firefox and preferably TOR if you value your privacy.
Now you've googled "jimmy" and "rimmer" you might be getting some interesting recommendations from Google Maps while you are out and about. Not only will they suggest you might like to pop in to an establishment near your location, they will also ask you kindly to take a photograph to help other users.

I thought Jimmy Hogan, but he only managed us, rather than playing for us.
Also disappointed that Jackie Sewell captained Zambia, but didn't manage them.
-
Ooo, Freddie Mwila managed Zambia and played once for Villa

Ah, the memories.

Phil Woosnam probably doesn't count but he ran the entire NASL for a while.
-
McLeish ;)
-
It's in typical H+V style that the vast majority of 'answers' on this thread aren't correct but that the posters concerned are 'helpfully' sharing their knowledge...
It's interesting!
-
I think Alf Ramsey once played at Villa Park for Spurs. Does that count?
-
Platt managed the England Under 17's for a while didn't he?
-
Peter McParland - Hong Kong
Phil Woosnam - USA
Some obscure ones:
Joe Mercer (played in a few end of season tour matches) – England (temporary charge)
Tord Grip (played one youth game in the Midland Intermediate League) – Norway
Henrik Larsen (on trial, played first team friendlies) - Faroe Islands
Oscar Arce (played for the stiffs in the Central League) - Burkina Faso
-
Thought I'd found one.
Ron Burgess managed Wales and played youth football for Villa; Cwn Villa....
-
Ooo, Freddie Mwila managed Zambia and played once for Villa
Freddie Mwila also managed Botswana.
Brian Tiler was also manager of Zambia 1978-80.
-
Just spotted that Noberto Solano is assistant manager of Peru (who just beat Uruguay).
-
Simon Stainrod was Manager of Iceland.
The Doncaster store.
-
Danny Blanchflower - Northern Ireland.
-
Mustapha Hadji is the current assistant manager of Morocco. Thanks Wikipedia.
-
He didn't play for us though.
As didn't Joe Mercer and SGT but both managed us and England.
-
Not much use in an ex-players thread though :P
-
It's always of some use to repeat good stuff even out of place 8)
