I think the play-offs might just be a little bit out of reach now...
-
No disgrace I suppose ..........
-
I prefer Off Topic to this forum.
-
Stopped us playing in the second half. No-one to bring on to change things in the second half. What did they have, one chance? Typical.
-
We aint getting top 2 now. Bugger.
-
Meh
-
No disgrace I suppose ..........
Come to something doesn't it, seeing a defeat to Huddersfield as acceptable.
Doesn't even piss me off any more.
-
We need to stop being so wasteful with chances. I really can't wait for this season to end, because there's a real lack of purpose for us.
-
As soon as we conceed we're beaten, thats what we need to work in for the redt of the season.
-
Got to learn to be ruthless and salvage points when we go behind.it was interesting seeing Leeds at the sty - for all blues lovely football it counted for shit
-
So basically we have to score first to have any chance of getting anything from the game. Worrying that we have zero chance of getting anything from a game once we go behind
Shite mentality!
-

Let's face it Bruce making a change to adapt was always unlikely even if we had a full squad.
-
As I didn't see it, I can't give a reliable account.
Gutless fuckers.
-
Huddersfield Town.....yes fuckin Huddersfield Town beat a mid table championship team from the Midlands. That's the reality..!!!!@ we can't fuckin compete with teams in the top half of the championship .!
-
Pathetic. Same old same old....
-
Villa are back!
No big surprise losing to the better team.
-
Fuck it, roll on next season.
-
At least we are starting to look like a team, by the sounds of it we played far better than in the three games we won before it. Silly individual error and not taking chances again - story of the season.
-
Sounded like we should have at least taken a draw but we still need about 10 chances to score a goal. We've really got to improve the goalscoring over the summer or it will cost us next season again.
-
We lost. We move on.
-
Well, I guess me starting the match thread only works as a lucky charm if I'm sat in a car park close to the ground. It clearly doesn't work when I'm 180 odd miles away
-
Fucking state of that defending. Nothing more nailed on than Villa being unable to overcome going a goal behind.
-

Spend another £30m😉

Yes you and Villa defenders were long way away when they scored.
-
PW, correct loose to Huddersfield, Well that's OK. Top Team, Top Manager.
We, lots of injury's, come off a winning streak, should have taken our chances, Lapse in defense.
We go again.
Jury still out for me.
-
Stupid goal to give away, fairly depressing defeat. Don't fancy us vs Sheff Wed now, our results against the top sides in this division have been pretty poor. If Kodjia doesn't score, we dont. V depressing.
-
Not having seen the goal yet I can only guess it was a lapse of concentration, failing to pick up players, no closing down?
-
Huddersfield looked like what they were: nothing special. One of the great frustrations of this league is how mediocre every team looks and how with a bit of concentration you could smash them out of sight.
-
On the radio sounded like we had most of the chances in the 1st half and things were looking good. My stream went just after the goal so no idea who/what was at fault... can't break down the teams after going behind. Nothing changes on that front...
Onwards.
-
Not having seen the goal yet I can only guess it was a lapse of concentration, failing to pick up players, no closing down?
All three.
-
Not having seen the goal yet I can only guess it was a lapse of concentration, failing to pick up players, no closing down?
They went to sleep at corner like we did vs Newcastle
-
How many times...
-
Totally agree with PW...not matter how we played if loosing to Huddersfield is OK then we can give up hopes of the premiership and become the next coventry.
-
Getting a touch of déjà vu - create several chances, fail to put them away, lapse of concentration at a set piece, lose the game, drop two places down the league. By the sound of it on balance of play we deserved at least a point, but if you miss chances at one end and fuck up at the other you end up getting exactly what you deserve.
-
Very much in the game for much of it, though Huddersfield stepped it up in 2nd half and we do have several players missing. Still very worrying that heads drop when we go behind.
-
Disappointing for the little run to end. Due to injuries, no one on the bench to change things.
-
We lack a strong forward. Kodjia is skilful but sometimes you need a big unit to outmuscle one dimensional defenders. Obviously, Rudy Gestede was the exception to the rule.
-
Think back to the Brizzle game. If they took their chances, the two shots that his the bar - they win.
The better team on the day will take their chances. Banal, plain and simple.
-
I did think we'd lose this, but from the posts on here it sounded like we had the best of the first half, plenty of chances. Also sounds like the squad is still mentally fragile. They should come on a bootcamp to Queensland - eat some kangaroo bollocks and drink some tins of concrete
-

Eh?
-
Over the 2 games against Huddersfield they've had 15 minutes maximum were by they were on top and yet they've taken 4 points. Probably says as much about their mentality as it does about ours.

Eh?
Did they not hit the woodwork twice before we went on to brush them aside or am I thinking of another game?
-
Does Bruce and the coaching staff ( yes I know.. fuckin coaching staff) explain that if we go behind we are quite within our rights to bust a gut and try and salvage a result.
-
It's now impossible for us to win the league unless Newcastle receive a points deduction. I think we're leaving it a tad late for second place as well.

-
Well we played well first half, as this is our pre-season that's a positive to build on.
Lots of things to build on, but between and the start of August is enough time to do that.
Next match now.
-
Banal, plain and simple.
Fruit in the bedroom, not for me.
-
Not enough goal threat. We concede, we lose.

Or are you saying Huddersfield were the better side tonight? Didn't sound like that was the case.
-
I see we haven't gelled yet.
-
We've conceded one goal in four games. Bruce is making us harder to beat. By far our biggest problem is lack of goals. Put the chances away and relieve the pressure on the defenders. It's not rocket surgery.
-
I don't get this wait till next season lark. We won't be any better then.

There's 10 players missing! We're down to the bare bones at the moment. It wasn't a disgrace to lose. Bruce will sort it given time.
-

Also worth bearing in mind we've played 4 matches in 10 days, or 5 in 15, with essentially the same team due to injuries. Must be a degree of fatigue creeping in and no let up with another game on Sat. Will be interesting to see how we perform after a break
-

Much better than we were, it's a slow work in progress that's all.
Bruce had an excellent window in January, with a few tweaks here and there and more time together with players we have between now and August we'll be on fire. Keep the faith.
-
Bare bones...how much did our starting eleven cost vs Huddersfield starting eleven.?

Plus we hit the woodwork twice as well including from a peno.
Had a feeling we were going to rue the the close misses we had in the first half tonight.
It's strange when you're not watching a game and it's scoreless, thinking the players must be working hard to fashion chances. Then a goal flash comes on the telly and SkySportsNews shows a Huddersfield player waltzing towards our box with all the time in the world to place an admittedly fine shot into the corner. Shocking defending though.
Nice to see a young lad get his debut. Any cop?
-
Missed the game and only read a few comments on here and have just listened to Bruce's post match interview. Whilst I can understand the disappointment of losing, there seem to be far more positives than the last few games with the exception of the points. Those dismissing Huddersfield as some team we should easily beat this season haven't been paying attention. Wagner has done a fantastic job on a shoe string. Their fans think they're the hardest working team in the league and believe they can 'out football' any team. It sounds like they got away lightly tonight.
I look forward to hearing from those at the game. If Bruce is right and it was by far our best performance away from home then there are positives to take from tonight.
-
We've spent £80m quid, the small squad excuses don't really wash.
-
Good post Rudy, I wasn't there and watched through a couple streams and it did seem like small seeds of hope and we definitely edged the first half. I'm sure most who went would agree it was a much better performance. I'm feeling quite positive towards next season.
-
Quite right PW... £80 million..!!! If you accept mediocrity then there is only one way we are heading and it ain't to the likes of Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge anytime soon.
-

Thanks but I'm not giving Bruce a free pass to next season just yet. He has to earn it but it sounds like tonight he improved his chances. Saturday should be interesting.
-

We've got 9 or 10 players out, that screws up options for any side in any division.
-

True but it could be argued only Hogan was a real miss tonight.
-
Point is once we went 1 down we had very little available on the the bench to try and change it. Or any options to freshen up the starting 11. Our only options were 2 shit defenders, Gardner and 3 academy players. So regardless of how much we've spent, due to our typical run of injuries the available squad of players tonight was small.
-
Thought we were the much better team first half and we're unlucky not to go in ahead
Johnstone seemingly stood still for the goal like the defenders. Other than that kept it tidy at the back
Bree- steady
Chester / Baker could not fault either tonight
Taylor - getting better although needs to overlap more often
Jedinak - motm - a rock in what he does
Conor / Lansbury ran thier socks off and really pressed 1st half
Amavi - I keep expecting so much more from him
Kodjia - tried but isolated so many times
Adomah - omg - frustrates the shit out of me.. always seems half paced and half arsed. Slow in thought as well as movement. Offers absolutely nothing to the team. Complete dud
Bruce - actually thought 1st half tactics were spot on. Team fell asleep for goal but then retracted on themselves and really needed some some inspiration through changes which did not come
-
Sounds like we played fine first half and a bit more luck and it's 1-0 to us.
What I can't get my head around is how poor we are at getting anything out of the game once we go a goal down....our stats for that are horrific this season and again we concede tonight but there was still a good half hour left to get a point yet we offered little.
No chance of promotion unless we sort that out next season.
-
I was there tonight, played well first half had all the chances didn't score. We were cruising to a an easy point in the 2nd half switched off from a corner, you know the rest. If that's 3rd best in this division well fuck me. They worked hard played just as much long ball as us and had one shot which went in.
Oh they have a drum, the small time tin pot small town wankers.
And they play music after goals.
Other than that good night out.
-
We lost to a club that have clappers, a drum, a megaphone and play goal music.
Let's be honest we were never going to win four on the trot. Some people got carried away because we beat three crap sides. We're ok at doing that, that seems to be our level beating the piss poor teams. The only decent sides we've beat are Fulham and Reading. That's why we're not going down but we're nowhere near the play offs.
Sheffield Wednesday are another decent team on Saturday. They'll know that if they can score first they'll win.

-
Need someone to bury the ball , a keeper and a replacement for Adomah and we will go up next year
-
Very annoying was that. In control for nigh on the entire game, under no pressure at any point. We switch off for 5 seconds at a corner where they try something different and neither Taylor or Amavi react and we concede a very soft goal.
I didn't think we created too much second half for all the effort that went in, but then neither did they.
We cut them.open first half and I felt Hourihane should have hit the target. Very unlucky with the ball coming off the bar.
We pressed well, stopped them playing all game and played the better football ourselves. A very tight game that I thought we edged. A draw would have been fair.

I hope Huddersfield go up so we don't have to listen to that fucking drum next year. Plastic twats had a loud hailer too.

Seeing the highlights back we really ought to have gone in two up.
Thought we suffered later on with the big injury list. There was nothing Bruce could turn to to change it around.

Fair observations made by both of you. From my limited footage and heresay, I was making a link albeit tenuously between taking chances and not doing so.
If or when safety is assured, I'd like to see more chances for deserving kids coming through.

I prefer Off Topic to this forum.
But only for the Zsa Zsa Gabor Memorial Celebrity Deathwatch.
Otherwise, it's business as usual.

Spot on Ads. That was the best high up the pitch pressing performance since Brighton away. They had some long range efforts but we kept them out of our box well, until the goal.
-
Just home and about to write pretty much what Ads has already said, so I'll not bother - only to say that a major plus of tonight is it's our last away midweek game and I won't have to suffer the f*cking b*stard M1 and its shitty night closures for quite a while.
-
Just got back.
We certainly shouldn't have lost, but I couldn't say we looked like winning after the break either. I can't recall any other shots they had on target, but it's awful how we switch off at a short corner again.
We were the better team in the first half and Hourihane should've done better when he blazed over. I was hoping for more from him, but it hasn't really materialised yet.
Adomah and Amavi were the big let downs as they never created anything of note and we barely got behind their defence.
Kodjia seems to have to create his own chances too often and there still isn't any sustained or concerted link up play.
I know we were injury hit, I know they are 3rd (though based on the 2 matches against them I can't see how), I know we're were the away team, I know we deserved a draw, but the performance just didn't inspire me with confidence that we are going to create enough chances, let alone put them away on a regular basis.
-
Thoroughly enjoyable game tonight, despite the result. If only Hourihane and Lansbury had taken their first-half chances. Thought that Jedinak had easily his best game for us, closely followed by Lansbury; they both showed real strength in midfield. Where we fell down was with the three forwards, not helped by it being a wide pitch which meant that Adomah and Amavi were never close enough to Kodjia. The latter is poor at holding the ball up and neither Adomah nor Amavi have too many brain cells. We're really missing Andre Green and he can't come back soon enough.
I agree with Ads on the drum; very irritating and glad I was on the left hand side furthest away from it.
-
I've said on here many times that I'm no fan of Bruce's style of (or rather lack of) football but there's no doubt that his team is coming together and tonight was another step in the right direction.
We looked far more solid than we have for a long while although we did look suspect down our left, even in the first half when were we clearly the better side. Amavi seems caught between being a full-back and the midfield role he's supposed to be playing, and Taylor doesn't look comfortable with him in front of him.
Attacking wise Adomah disappointed again and for me it's really those two wide midfield positions now that is our real weakness.
We're getting there and I'm confident we're going to start next season in good shape.
Up the Villa and keep the faith!
-
Seeing the highlights back we really ought to have gone in two up.
Thought we suffered later on with the big injury list. There was nothing Bruce could turn to to change it around.
It's literally been the story of our season. I cannot recall a season where we could and should have been a 2 or 3 goals ahead in most games, only to find a way to blow a slim late lead and draw or lose due purely down to our own profligacy.
-

Boom Boom!
-
My first away this season and deserved a draw. Core of the midfield is getting there with Jed and Lansbury playng well. Like the look of Bree too. Big disappointment for me was Adomah again, I just don't get what he does?
Was in the last seat to the right down the front so had the drum for 90 minutes. It did kill any atmosphere from our fans where I was. Good noise from 3 stands on their side tbf and notwithstanding the drum and megaphone.
-

I thought we played in parts last night. The midfield is coming together well and will click with some goals at some point soon. The goal conceded was very annoying and the only time we let them really have a sniff of a goal.
Kodjia?! - what to do? 83 or so minutes in, he gets a good break into the box and the makes a blatant dive, receiving a yellow card, deservedly. He could have passed to the left and given someone a clear opening to cross; he dives instead.
Someone needs to buy him a brain.
Question: why does Jedi get booked for his first (admittedly cynical) foul - like at Elland Road earlier in the season - when the two 'udders CB had both done the same earlier without punishment?
Someone needs to take all drummers at football grounds out and tie them to a post in the middle of the most unforgiving desert and leave them to drum ....
-
We lack a strong forward. Kodjia is skilful but sometimes you need a big unit to outmuscle one dimensional defenders. Obviously, Rudy Gestede was the exception to the rule.
Bring Benteke back, (if only it was possible) just dreaming
-
If only we took those chances in the first half.
-
In my rush last night I forgot to mention Bree. Very composed, not flustered and kept their winger quiet all night, could be good this lad.
-
I wasn't there last night but it sounded a familiar story of playing reasonably well in the first half but not getting the goal to enable us to go on and win the game. It was also a lazy goal to give away, which is something else we've done too many times this season.
-
We've spent £80m quid, the small squad excuses don't really wash.

Found a lot of the posts on here to be overly negative about last night, seems that frustrations about the way the season has gone are overtaking people's ability to see game from game our improvements.
Cant understand why people still make comments like "oh god we can't even beat Huddersfield". Before the newcastle game they won 6 on the bounce, are third in the league and have one of the best managers. If we can't get over the realisation that we are in this league and expect to win just because we are playing championship team then obviously you're going to be very disappointed.
Created chances last night, and should have scored but were slightly unlucky with the woodwork. Yes we should have put one of them away but at least we are now creating chances in every game, and midfielders are contributing fully to the attack, something which wasn't happening until recently. In response to the fixation that we have a 'soft mentality', I think that is a very harsh criticism tonight. Nobody who saw that can say our players didn't try after we went a goal down. For me the most unfortunate thing was that having 10 players out injured, we had no options on the bench to bring fresh legs on to attack, and the ones who were on had played 4 games in 10 days or something, so has to be some consideration given to this.
It seems we are improving, the defence has shored up massively, 1 goal in 4 games tells its own story. Again frustration that it came from a mistake, but those mistakes are getting fewer and fewer, a couple weeks ago it was constant ping pong in our box so lets actually mark the improvements we see rather than a constant moan every time we lose a game.
This season has been a shock and disappointment, probably the biggest of all the recent ones we've had to put up with, but we have a team that now seem to be slowly gelling so lets see what happens shall we. Hopefully we can carry our improved performances into results and some momentum for next season.
-
Huddersfield didn't look any better than us, which is encouraging to a point.
However, we do continue to play pedestrian football, and give the ball away far too many times - our possession was poor last night.
Too many hopeful balls, too little inter-play ... we aren't playing to anywhere near our capacity, given the talent we have for this level ... on to the next one. It's a hard league, and will be again next season ... need the balance between creativity on the ball and being hard to beat.

I have been critical so far of the team and tactics but I have to agree with this.
Although it is clear that sometimes you fall on a shape / formation as your hand is forced with injury / suspension so I am not sure it is down to any SB influence directly - the test will be when players are fully fit as previously he got it badly wrong on several attempts
Last night we struggled due to lack of width and pace. Amavi I can put up with as he is not a natural at it but my God I am losing patience with Adomah - I really struggle to see what he brings to the team
Slow in movement
Slow in anticipation and thought
Equally poor with both feet
Cannot head a ball
Cannot tackle
I felt we played with 10 men last night
The first player out of Green / Bacuna / Grealish should be straight in to replace him - awful footballer

Found a lot of the posts on here to be overly negative about last night,
Fuck me, last night was mild, in fact it was somewhat positive compared to the last few months.
-
I don't mind Adomah too much but I can understand why he's not rated by others. He's one of those who's probably better coming off the bench although at the moment he's got to play I suppose.
-
I think Adomah is struggling for form as much as anything, earlier in the season he was getting half a yard and getting decent balls into the box which is the number 1 job for a winger. I think his form started to fall away because he was asked to carry the ball inside and try to score more himself.

I'm just saying this again. That fucking drum. Tise stupid fucking flags they wave around stopping their owns fans from seeing the game properly.
The other stand with those stupid clapper things.
Bowing to their fans at the end as if they'd won the league.
It's all so bloody plastic.
-
The thing the players do at the end is something they do every game and have done for a while so that doesn't bother me. Stuff becomes a superstition all the time.
The other things are crap though, I blame Bolton for the flag stuff. #flagwankers

Not many comments on here from those that went to the game last night. Here's the view from a Huddersfield forum (http://downatthemac.proboards.com/thread/103914/town-aston-villa?page=8), most seem to think we deserved at least a point, our fans were the noisiest there this season. More positive than some posts on here.

I hope Huddersfield go up so we don't have to listen to that fucking drum next year. Plastic twats had a loud hailer too.
Be afraid. Be very afraid. This Saturday we have visiting fans who have a drum and trumpets. Suggestions please as to what should be done with the rough end of a ragman's trumpet.

Tell me about it. I had those wankers behind me at an Ingerlund game. Fucking drums and trumpets.
-
Maybe we should try it, along with bonding in a remote Scandinavian forest this summer, as it appears to work for them.

Brucie will turn Kodjia into the new George Donis before hes finished
What, that Blackburn chump?
Not sure how anyone can come to that view after seeing Kodjia take out three players with one move which led to Angie's swinger off the bar - would have been goal of the season (after Andre's effort last week).

On the basis that Huddersfield only allow flags into the ground if they've been checked a minimum of one-day before the game even though they have a fire certificate sewn into them (how that's meant to work for away fans I really don't know!) then I think we should burn Wednesday's drum outside the Witton Lane entrance. ;D

We're taking a long time to gel but someone's due a tonking soon!!!

UTV
I agree the ball retention is still rubbish, but there are encouraging signs:
- energy levels and closing-down efforts were good last night
- we are creating chances
- the MF players are getting into goal scoring positions
- 4 games and only 1 goal conceded
- Johnstone looked much more dynamic last night
Last night we played a team that seemed determined to wind our players up at every opportunity with hard challenges and argy-bargy; we also had a ref that was poor, IMHO. And we had a bench that didn't offer much in the way of alternatives.
It's been a horrible season and we'll be much better equipped to deal with it next season.

Corey thats a great post, pretty much sums up how I feel, your not on your own.

Bring on Sheffield Wednesday,UTV!

My thoughts on last night can be encapsulated in the rhetorical question: how on earth are Huddersfield 20-odd points better offer than us?
Of course we all know the answers from a Villa perspective, but there wasn't much of a difference on yesterday's showing. On another day we might have easily got at least the draw. Definitely some positives to be taken, even if the goal that beat us was a poor one defensively.

Word on the street is that the fuckers have acquired the services of an octet for strings and winds for the occasion, and will chime out with chamber music at inappropriate moments to disturb our rhythm.
Whenever I try and play a bit of Schubert on the old Bose my dog Frabbo, a german shepherd with very strong opinions about such matters, howls like a wolf until it is taken off.
