If Johnstone and Elphick are anywhere near the starting XI then I'll 0-2 with Bent obviously scoring one (or both) of the goals

No idea what our best formation or team is but neither does the manager so I'll pass on guessing our line up this weekend!

Can we edit the title? We're not "that lot".

Good chance to get back on track here. I am surprised at seeing their run of form. Only 2 wins in 9, which while better than us, suggests their season has now died a death. Poor result last night at home as well.

Anyway, hope springs eternal, a win for us.

It was against a Derby team that SGT hit on the winning formula after an average start to the season in 89/90

Bruce is no SGT so I fear this could be his "Bolton" moment

If the crowd start the "You don't know what you are doing" chant it could be bye bye

Be interesting to see what we adopt given Hogan's absence.

Wouldn't mind seeing Jedinak screening, with Hourihane and Lansbury offering something genuine going forwards for once and Green and Adomah wide of Kodjia.

I hope Bree is back.

Can I second this please? I am sure the team across the city are 'that lot' - I'd honestly prefer it if we could just go back to naming our team as beautifully as they are supposed to be named, but if people feel we have to head up threads in this manner, can we at least be 'this lot'.

I have no clue. Whatever the line up, formation, system etc etc, I'm lost as to why we look so inept. So fully expect to get beaten again and praying that something, anything clicks and we find a way to put it all together for 90 minutes. I honestly have no idea what that even feels like.

Derby's revival has hit the breaks as of late and they could only draw with Burton at home so with that in mind I predict ..an easy 3 nil win for them

Can't call this one. Torn between starting well, missing a few chances, giving a soft goal away before half-time and collapsing to lose 3-0, or starting badly, giving a soft goal away after 5 minutes and getting outplayed to lose 3-0.

I had a look at a Derby forum and the comments made me smile. There's more that unites football fans than divides us, a shared terminal pessimism;

Quote
Villa have splashed the cash on footballs version of the Harlem globetrotters. Sooner or later they will gel and give somebody a tonking.

Quote
When a team is on a terrible run it is often Derby that sorts it out for them. Villa 3 - Derby 0.

Quote
Villa going through a tough time so throw in the sacrificial Lamb.

Villa win 2 or 3 nil sorry to say

Quote
Villa 2 Derby 0.

Genuinely can't see where our next win will come from.

Most seem to think we will win 2-0.

We are adding pressure to a group of players who don't need it right now. We have a decent set of players and manager. Give them a bit of breathing space and they'll turn it around. Keep micro analysing like we do and we will shoot ourselves in the foot with that never ending spiral of self destruction. 1-0 Villa.

Hard team to pick, a novel concept but we should try and outscore Derby

-------------------Johnstone
Bacuna, Chester, Baker, Taylor
Adamoah, Jedinak, Hourihane, Green
--------------------Grealish
--------------------Kodjia

Hutton didn't do much wrong at Newcastle but we need a bit more going forward.

They need breathing space for sure, but do you seriously think a scattering of interwebsters with long standing grudges against each others' positions  "micro analysing" the the games has any effect whatsoever on what happens on the pitch? Or for that matter upon the crowd's general demeanour?

I think not.

That's how we tend to do it. Gritty draw followed by a win, we rarely seem to bang out a shock 2-0 comfortable one to jump back into form, where (and this is likely a misconception) other sides appear to do.

Beat Derby and we will be celebrating 3 on the bounce for the first time since O'Neill come the following weekend.

At Newcastle on Monday there was the usual;

I was at this game - my god it seems so long ago now

Points of interest

Their 2nd goal - not often you saw God done like a kipper - especially by some no neck no mark like McMinn

Parkers goal was very Tony Morelyesque

Williams goal was very Kodjia / Daleyesque

Shilton - although saved 2 pens in the game he was very flappy on crosses

Never realised that Ormandroyd played for them

Few things I remember about that day. It was 'scorchio' weather. I discovered real ale in the pub just down from Derby train station and my mate got that drunk he travelled the whole of the number 9 bus route there and back twice before the driver threw him off back in Brum. Happy days.

We’ve played Derby at home 59 times and accumulated 99 points from those games.
I fancy a draw in order to make a ton.
The full list of teams we’ve acquired 100+ home points from:
136 Everton
128 Sunderland
117 Blackburn Rovers
108 West Bromwich Albion
106 Sheffield Wednesday
105 Bolton Wanderers
104 Arsenal
104 Liverpool
104 Newcastle United
102 Manchester City

Bent will score.

Gone for a 0-0 bore draw as Bruce will play it safe at VP he might even roll out the 352 for another trial run. I will be worried when it gets to about 89 mins though if it's still scoreless.

I don't think in the history of the game that there has ever been a more nailed on 0-0 than this...

So 4-3 Villa.

If Johnstone plays we lose.

Bent will score.

Thor needs benching as he all flowing locks and no hammer.

Elphick to be kidnapped and driven as far from VP as possible.

Not predicting result or score as I am really not as interested as I should be.

I agree with all of that except the last line and I'm going for 1-1, Bunn in for Johnstone.

Johnstone

McCafu
Chester
Beckenbaker
Taylor (but I'm not convinced he's any better than Amavi)

Jedi
Hourihane
Angela

Andrethenotgiant
Kod
Albert

The only way that I'd be OK with seeing three at the back is if Bree is fit to play right wing-back and McCafu moves into a three with Chester and Beckenbaker

If Mad Tom is in the starting lineup, I will be a tad peeved

Repeat of this would be nice. What a night!

I was at this game - my god it seems so long ago now

Points of interest

Their 2nd goal - not often you saw God done like a kipper - especially by some no neck no mark like McMinn

Parkers goal was very Tony Morelyesque

Williams goal was very Kodjia / Daleyesque

Shilton - although saved 2 pens in the game he was very flappy on crosses

Never realised that Ormandroyd played for them

I was in the "family section" of the Baseball Ground that night. The skinhead family, as it turned out. Still not sure how we escaped in one piece.

I'd go with Redsox line up with I suppose a very unexciting bench of Bunn, Elphick (or Richards), Amavi, Bacuna, Gardner, BB and Davis.

Squad down to its bare bones with players injured or sent on loan (12 I think in total).

Derby on a terrible run, coming to play the benevolent Villa. Hope I'm wrong but any time a team is on a crap run, or a striker hasn't scored for several games, it usually ends when they play us. Let this be the time it stops.

I am tired of expecting (and usually getting) the worst from our club. So what the hell? We win and win well all the recent tactical changes by Bruce come together and the new players suddenly click showing the class we paid for.

3-0 home win with the midfield scoring them all.

I can't go which makes is nailed on a Villa win.  The handful of games I have missed over the last couple of years have been predominantly our wins.  Additionally the games I make the most efforts to get to are invariably the worst performances.  Home win by two clear goals.  Samba (14). Bent o.g. (92).

A 1-1 draw today which at least stops the rot, then hoping for Wigan and Forest to do the same and we remain 6 points clear, the win to come at home to Bristol City.
