0-0, 5 at the back, by passing the midfield, Kodjia trying to do it all alone, Hogan getting more frustrated by the game, getting dragged closer to the relegation places, post match people still burying there heads in the sand and throwing round words such as stability, continuity and gel.

If this can't be at least given a run for a few matches, it looks the most obvious of line ups to me.

The bad run and this shit 352/532 formation has to end at some point...

             Johnstone
Bree  Chester  Baker  Amavi
              Jedinak
    Lansbury    Hourihane
             Grealish
         Kodjia    Hogan

...if Bree and Jedi are still out then play Bacuna and Gardner.

I can't see us getting a win so I'd settle for a draw. 1-1.

Jedinak unlikely to figure or I'd swap him for Thor. Bacuna for Bree if not fit.

That looks about right although I don't think Thor is a holding midfield player otherwise he'd already have played him there. I suspect Lansbury has to play there until Jedinak is fit.

Bruce's  problem is he wants to play two up front but that leaves us light in the middle unless he plays the three at the back. Using Kodija as a wide forward as he did early on is probably the way to go. He is not great with his back to goal anyway.

Haven't read or heard his post match comments yet...is he talking about ditching 352/532 so soon after being so adamant that it was the way forward with these players? Any links?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Barnsley - Pre Match Thread
Post by: aj2k77 on February 12, 2017, 05:39:07 PM
Why is he so adamant it's the way forward after initially we used 4-3-3 with these players, whilst apparently advocating the plan was 4-4-2 at the forum but then changed to 5-3-2 after a good hiding.

Bruce needs to stay true to his belief, the model he signed the players for, keep calm, stop flipping tactics around or the pressure will build and things will turn in to a complete mess, again.

This will be our lowest gate of the season I'd imagine.

In terrible form, miles off the promotion pace with little prospect of that happening now, the biggest date night of the year (apparently) Barnsley on a Tuesday night in the championship is that cliché we were all dreading when discussing the pros and cons of relegation from the prem. Can see it being only 25k.

Funny thing is it will probably be a decent game.

Barnsley like to attack home and away given the amount they score so they'll be open and leave us more space than usual at home. Think Hourihane will have a good game against his old club and we'll nick it 2-1.

Based on the previous excitement-only-to-be-kicked-in-the-nuts time and again this season it's a
2-0 defeat with the catcalls trying to be deafening but there is only 20,000 there.

Bruce can't shamefacedly change the 5-3-2 yet because he needs it still for the barcodes away to keep it damage limitation. Thusly expect the change v rams. By then the top end of the division is played out and we're just seeing out games as our obligation, not quite relegated in bottom 8.

We're not going to blood Amavi as LM simply because if he beds in, his replacement is going to take that much longer when he buggers off as he won't have another season in the 2nd tier.

its another summer of transition to completely rid us of the wasters from the past 5 years.

I object to this throw money at the problem bollucks - we have had shit players for too long and naturally had to replace them. Otherwise what's the alternative- polish the turds?!

Clemence and Calderwood - we've been shitter since these 2 have come in, what the fuck is going on???!!!

I'm saying to my kids that honestly no more than 7 years ago we played regularly good football and won. We scored in the first half and closed the game out. We scored from corners. We won away. Draws against the sky wankfest outfits was sometimes 2 points dropped for us.

I despair at where we find ourselves in 2017. Depressed.

Gregg Evans, writing in a disgraceful and doomed local rag has opined thus:

Quote
Steve Bruce has already admitted that he could abandon his new-look formation less than a fortnight after introducing it.

So if the Villa manager does change his system against Barnsley, how is he likely to set up?

Well, there are certainly plenty of options for him to consider.

Bruce may well revert back to a flat back four with one of Nathan Baker, Tommy Elphick or James Chester dropping out.

That would then see Alan Hutton and Neil Taylor moving into their deeper full-back positions rather than acting, on average, as the most advanced Villa players behind the front two, based on stastistics from Saturday’s defeat to Ipswich.

I’d expect the midfield to remain the same with Henri Lansbury, Conor Hourihane and Birkir Bjarnason all fitting in somewhere across the central areas.

Jack Grealish is available after suspension but may have to make do with a place on the bench.

Bruce has said that he is happy to play both Scott Hogan and top-goalscorer Jonathan Kodjia up top but he will also need to consider the option of playing with wingers.

Andre Green and Albert Adomah could offer the width on either side with one of Kodjia or Hogan playing centrally.

I think Villa have played their best football in that 4-3-3 formation so maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to revert back.

James Bree (knee), Mile Jedinak (groin) and Gabby Agbonlahor (hamstring) are expected to miss out.

We shouldn't play 532 at VP even against Chelski let alone in Div 2 it's defeatist at best.
How about trying to take the initiative as the home side as happens in any professional football league in the world.
We are going backwards and SB needs to show some faith in his new signings.
We are playing Barnsley for f--k sake show some balls.
So sick of this boring non-attacking football.

It would be nice. First goal has been key for us for a while.

It's maddening the players we have. I don't think he will.completely drop the conservatism but I would ideally like to see the back of 352 and Lansbury playing so deep.

We will probably contrive to lose anyroad but I'd go with.

                               Johnstone
Hutton          Baker            Chester         Amavi

                                 Gardner/Jedinak

                   Grealish                    Lansbury

Green                          Hogan              Kodja

That's ok PW, but I'd put Hourihane in over Grealish...simply a more effective player in midfield where we are still "light".

I know its very early days but I haven't seen an effective performance from Houlihane in the three games he's started, I'd drop him and tell him coasting through games passing the ball backwards ten yards might be acceptable at Barnsley but we expect more.

No point in having such a big squad if we dont use it to replace underperformers after a few games.

I've been with my good lady over 7 years and married for over 5, but I have never taken her to Villa Park before.  She is coming with me tomorrow.  What a valentines day treat!

As her only other game with me was a 2-1 win at the Emirates (the Darren Bent game), I'm going home win.  2-0 with Hourihane and Kodjia scoring.

Bacuna        Baker        Chester     Amavi

                      Bjarnason

           Lansbury        Hourihane

                      Grealish

                Kodjia       Hogan

Still cant believe SB played Taylor and cafu as the wing backs and squeezes Boon in the defence.

Chester and Baker were looking ok until they had to play with Mrs Brown.

I think we will look a lot better when Jedi and Bree are back but until then 2-0 Villa.

Afraid we going to win this one even with Elphick then Bruce (who lacks critical selfreflection) will think his new moronic system is working.

Then when we facing good teams again and losing he thinks (oh, we just missing Jack)...

Then we facing relegation battle with Elphick and Boneless as starters and the nightmare never ends.

I'd love to unleash the Rush on this lot, or any other Chumpionship lot. Give his youth and fearlessness a go as soon as he's back from injury.
His contract shenanigans show he's ''manned up'' since looking like a quivering virgin when being brought on by Sherwood at Sunderland but that was two years ago which is a lifetime as a teenager (and a Villa fan).
His blooding is the only exciting thing left to try this season.

How far is Bruce away from a Bolton moment? Surely tonight is when we turn it around. Valentines Day - an evening sat in seething resentment reflecting on a love that has gone stale, choking down a drink and some food that is as unpalatable as the contemplation of many many more years to come. That's all you lot at VP - I'll be at home with Mrs MDC and a takeaway.

To win we need to get at them from the start. A negative line up from Bruce will give them confidence. We need a line up that is going to press them. It's no use Bruce losing his bottle and going for a defensive line up as we can't defend anyway.
