I don't understand playing wing backs but having the team's two best crossers on the bench

Blow that Bree is injured. And maybe he's looking for more defensive stability out of Taylor. I certianly that he's not playing 5-3-2 at home

Two defensive wing backs, why would you play Hutton ahead of Bacuna in that role? Plus, it's made for Amavi on the left, as out of form as he has been.

The three players with natural width all on the bench...so we'll be trying to break them down through the middle then...because we have been so good at doing that.
Don't get it but hey ho...got a feeling it won't be pretty...

5 at the back at home to a side that are nearly as bad at scoring goals as we are. I hope it works but it's hardly inspiring.

I don't understand why this is so difficult. We actually played some decent stuff under RDM. Just couldn't it going until the end where tactically and fitness wise we were exposed. In many of those games we led late into the game having dominated most of them with some really good attacking football. Our finishing was mostly awful. Then Bruce comes in and we become more conservative, even negative. It just didn't need to go that far the other way. This better be 3-5-2 but it just looks 5-3-2 now. 3-5-2 would be better served with Bacuna and Amavi. Maybe I'm missing something because I hope he's got plans for Hourihane and Lansbury to really push forward today.

Are we looking for the counter attack at home with this formation? I always thought that worked better away when the onus is on the home team to come out and play. The old, "Stifle and Hope".

Fuck it, whatever. Come on Villa. Just bloody entertain, not even win.

We played three centre backs and wing backs under Brian Little (Southgate, Ehigo, Barry mostly) and I do not remember that being that defensive or not entertaining - won a cup and fairly happy days.   I don't think we need to be too negative about the formation and setup.

Mebbe he wants extra cover at the back because he doesn't trust the keeper to deal with any sort of ball at all, even against modest opposition.

In which case put in a different keeper, rather than handicapping us with a water tight back-line containing Elphick and Hutton.

Thing is Hutton doesn't disappear in games, whether he's good enough going forwards, or often unsupported by teammates is fair debate. He's always trying and involved, I think.

It really is beyond parody. Hutton playing at all beggars belief.

I think I saw Hutton's last efforts at right wing back at home to Stoke towards the end of tactics time.

Hutton's selection beggars belief as does the continued efforts to play three centre backs at home, two of which have an allergic reaction  to keeping the ball. It's OK though, this tactical masterplan was clearly constructed during the recent transfer blitz.

All the forward balls are long. We just are not playing through our new central midfield. Two of the best strikers in the league but still no service.
Very, very, frustrating to watch.

We have played ok. The new midfielders are close to working well with Lansbury having a good game. Hourihane looks a bit out of it on the left he needs more ball to be effective. Didn't realise Hogan was so quick and a shortie for a number 9 but pleased to see that shirt occupied. Other than that it's bloody cold.

Extremely dull first half for the most part. It's like we buy a load of good players and then train all of the quality out of them. I'm not one for chopping and changing managers all the time but am already starting lose faith in Bruce.

Bruce has the players and he has until the end of season to get them playing good football and scoring at least two a game average otherwise Villa will remain a mid table side next season as well.

We are not anywhere near our potential with these players based on this performance

Im not at the match and can't find anywhere to view it.

Are the team working better together? Any sign of tactics beginning to work?

I saw a worrying statistic about how we play in different phases of the game, and as far as I can remember up to the 30min mark is generally the closest thing we have to a purple patch.

I've only watched the highlights of the game, but in every Ipswich chance that is featured it looks like either his positioning looks suspect, or he and Baker are getting in each other's way. I've noticed lots of occasions over the course of the season where he has ended up on the wrong side, or out of position, and rather than busting a gut to recover, seems to be waiting for someone else to deal with it. He doesn't even seem to have the necessary physicality. He gives me no confidence at all.
