Title: Aston Villa vs Ipswich Town Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Deano's Mullet on February 06, 2017, 06:34:09 PM
Villa Park
Saturday 11th Feb 3pm

In anticipation of the upcoming game i thought i'd start the pre-match thread a bit earlier in the week than its perhaps usually done. I'm coming up for this one, seen four wins from four visits so hopefully we'll resume our winning ways having not had a victory since Boxing Day. I think Hogan will be on fire in this one and can see Jedinak playing an anchor role letting Hourihane and Lansbury to get forward. Maybe Taylor to start at left back too? Either way I think we'll win 2-1 or 3-1. Kodjia and Hogan to kick off their partnership with a couple of goals.

I'm very much of the opinion that everything is shit at the moment (As you can probably tell from my posts) but I think we'll get enough balls forward to Kodjia and Hogan to probably win this one.

I think someone is due a good hiding from the Villa. I'll go 4-1 with 2 each for Kodja & Hogan. Hopefully you can bring some luck with you. Are Ipswich your nearest team? If so that result would be even better 👍

Aaargh!  WHY do people trot this out?!  It's meaningless, nobody is "due" a good hiding, because we haven't been playing well enough to inflict one!  Sorry, but it's one of those sayings that really annoys me.

Think Bruce needs to go back to basics with a good old 4-4-2

Johnston
Bree
Baker
Chester
Amavi
Adomah
Hourihane
Lansbury
Green/bacuna
Hogan
Kodjia

Can't bring myself to yet believe that the 'curse' has been lifted.

More misery and managerial incompetence. Not necessarily a defeat but maybe a lead surrendered due to clumsiness or stupidity.

Haven't got too much of a problem with that if he does. We created chances off the back off it. Not sticking them away cost us on Saturday eventually.

Ok I'd like us to give somebody a good hiding. I think we might have a squad capable of doing this. I'm hoping it's going to be soon.

Hope he does...he's been arsing around with the formation in the hope of stumbling across a winning one. Stick with one formation, play the players in their right positions and be patient. I'd still like to see Amavi wide left if he plays a 3 at the back though. He has pace and is the best crosser of the ball we have..

Am I the only one who thinks this new change of style would be perfectly suited to Amavi at wing back.
It appears the plodding Icelander and a Swansea stiff are ahead of him now in the pecking order.
£25 mill anyone?
Oh, and yes, a 2-2 draw.

Was he injured or just dropped? I can't remember.
Given his current form he deserves to be dropped though. But wing back could suit him. He's got to earn his place again though.

Thanks chaps. North Stand has indeed been cheaper in past, but last few games I've sat in there its been a bit shit (surrounded by overly pissed up / aggressive twats - not conducive to a trip to the game with my nephews).  Needed a few seats together so had to use Pravda, but £30 for a seat in the 'Doug Ellis' seems a bit much when we're playing Ipswich in the second division...

Agreed with what we have but I actually think Chester has stunk the place out recently

I am hoping that Jedinak is the key to getting our two attacking, goal scoring midfielders going. It will of course help if Bruce plays them in their actual positions!

I'm still struggling to understand how 352 can be our best formation with all the attacking players we have at our disposal and a limited supply of centre backs...it doesn't make sense! One injury to either of the 3 centre backs and we're either changing formation, calling upon Richards or asking someone else to play out of position.

The logical formation is 442 and providing service to what could potentially be the best pair of forwards in the Championship.

              Johnstone
Bree   Chester   Baker   Taylor
                Jedinak

The only acceptable outcome in this game is a home win. Forget the team needs to gel, players getting used to a system, each other or whatever.  Just get the win and push on from there.

Yes I would rather have a 4-1-3-2 as it keeps Elphick away from the side and neither Bree or Taylor are really wing backs.
Just replace Green (who is unlucky) with Bjarnason who apparently played for Basle on the right hand side of midfield.

Have to win our home games as our away form is dire!

           Hogan   Kodjia

Yes I would rather have a 4-1-3-2 as it keeps Elphick away from the side and neither Bree or Taylor are really wing backs.
Just replace Green (who is unlucky) with Bjarnason who apparently played for Basle on the right hand side of midfield.

Have to win our home games as our away form is dire!

Thats the sort of line up and formation id like to see

Yes, someone's due a hammering soon!! Lol!!

Seriously though - whatever the outcome is - would be no  surprise.

I dislike Ipswich from the time they ruined our Wembley dream in 75.  Poxy little village, rubbish fans and TV's love in with Robert Robson.  Oh I haven't forgotten they lost the league in rather than us winning it.

I think someone is due a good hiding from the Villa.

Aaargh!  WHY do people trot this out?!  It's meaningless, nobody is "due" a good hiding, because we haven't been playing well enough to inflict one!  Sorry, but it's one of those sayings that really annoys me.

I also think someone is due a good hiding by us , purely because statistically it hasn't happened for a while and because we now actually have enough talent at our disposal to inflict to a lot of teams in this division. Aargh if you like I'm going 4-1 Villa.

I've gone for the win, but that's based on some (fleeting) blind optimism that I'm currently feeling.

2-1 Villa, but nothing will surprise me - other than us hitting 5.

The first home game for some of the new signings so as long as Bruce sets the team up correctly and with the attitude then we should start on the front foot. If we take our early chances and keep pressing then this could be a good win and hopefully the start of a good run of results.

Villa 3-1.

Seriously though, it's a testament to Barry that he is still playing top flight football when you look at that starting 11!

Johnstone in goal, Bree, Chester, Baker, Taylor at the back, Jedinak sitting with Hourihane next to him, Lansbury and Thor more advanced with Hogan up top with Kodjia.

I thought SB had already said last week he was persisting with 3 (or 5) at the back?

If so it just looks like a way of making us defensively more solid and/or so he can shoe-horn Elphick into the team?

So would I.  My only concern if he insists on 3 at the back is lack of width and I don't know if Bree and Taylor are the answer to that.

For those travelling from far flung lands it is currently lightly snowing in the center of Brum. It is settling and currently looks like a heavy frost. However I reckon it could get worse.
