Last Saturday around 4.45 I was half asleep during the BBC results programme, not paying attention as Villa were not playing, when Garth Crooks said something that almost made me fall off the sofa. He described a bullet header by a player whose name I did not get as being 'a piece of classic centre forward play like you used to get from a player like.... Andy Lochhead...." and I woke up.
Andy Lochhead - the old balding eagle. Yes indeed, cross from an orthodox winger, bullet header, back of the net. Stuff of legends and all the clichés. Ever since then I have been wondering if there is any footage of one of the Villa legends, still remembered by some of us old timers. And how Garth Crooks remembered him from the early 70s, when the follically challenged Andy was strutting his stuff.
A blast from the past indeed, but well done to Mr Crooks for remembering him. And again I ask.... is there any film of Andy terrorizing defenders to the manor born? if so can we see it please?

Fuck's sake Trevor. Edit the title so I don't assume he's died, please!
EDIT: many thanks.

Good grief that brings back fond memories!

Was Lockheed in the Leicester team in 69 cup final?
-
No, but Andy Lochhead was.

Andy really knew how to head a football, brave and as hard as nails, one of my favourite Villa players, whenever I see footage of his winning header against Bournemouth I always get a shiver down my spine, incredible atmosphere that day.

I thought it was Lochhead?

was right in line with big andy clinging on to the holte end railings as a 10 year old as he powered in that equaliser against manyoo even now can still hear the thud as the ball hit his forehead before ending up in the back of the net

I remember all these great memories, but, for me the one that puts a lump in my throat was when he came back to Villa Park as manager of Oldham.
When the teams came out and he walked down the touch line it seemed like the whole ground was singing 'Andy, Andy Lochhead, Andy Lochhead in the air'
I'm pretty sure we beat them 6-0 and he walked back down the touch line to his song again.
He commented later that he had tears in his eyes

Andy, Andy Lochhead, Andy Lochhead in the air!!!!!
The name conjures up fantastic memories supporting the Villa as a youngster in the company of my dad. Brilliant times!!!
-
I remember a game at Villa Park when Stan Bennet who was captain of Walsall was laid out by Lochead, Stan was a mate of mine in those days so I was very conflicted.
-
My first Villa hero, in the park I wanted to be Andy Lochhead in the air. Fantastic days watching the Villa from the back of the Witton end on the dirt with my dad.

My first ever game on the Holte a week after my 8th birthday and I was allowed to watch the game on Sportsnight when we got home. I was convinced I saw myself on TV that night too. A magical night.

Absolute workhorse up front for us . The immediate memory which came to mind was an August game against Plymouth peering through a forest of players legs to see Andy emerge rocketing through the boots and knees horizontal to the ground for a diving header. It missed but he was such a brave player.
His reception against Oldham was something to behold - it was like a family member returning. Oh, and my favorite Lochhead song was "We've got baldy, cock-eyed Andy in the air, in the air........."
-
My first Villa favourite
-
My favourite story from my Dad was Andy claiming a throw in for Villa and that he never touched the ball and when he turned round there was a mud imprint of the ball on his head.....

That 2nd goal against Bournemouth - what a sight that Holte end was. And such a lovely pitch to play on!
-
"6ft 2, with eyes of blue, Andy Lochhead is coming for you"
Players were real men in them days
-
wonderful footage, and so many legends. Ray the grader always wonderful to watch. And the Fred Turnball handling of the ball on the near post and the goalie saving the penalty to beat Notts County.... thankyou Mr Crook for remembering Andy the follically challenged superman. What price nowadays? If MacCormack is worth £12 million.....

Villa beat Oldham 6-0 at Boundary Park in 71/72 and Andy scored at hatrick for us.

Yes, I vaguely remember that.
What was the score when he returned as their manager? Sure it was 6-0, too
EDIT: found it, April '75, 5-0 Brian Little hat trick :)

Hearing the "Villa, Villa....." chants from the Bournemouth match still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up

It seems to go up forever, to the heavens, a most inspiring of sights.

Acc to Wiki, Jimmy Frizzell was manager when we beat them 5-0 ?? Was Andy a sub ??
Andy was playing for them apparently, ( 10 goals in 45 matches) though not necessarily in that match.
Still going - was doing match day hospitality for Burnley last season
-
that shirt was pure class to, claret and blue with the villa lion badge

Blimey, could have swore he managed them.
It was 40 years ago ;)

76 today...Happy Birthday Andy
-
A belatedly Happy Birthday Andy.

Some strange reason we decided to go to Andy's pub in Burnley before the Huddersfield game in 87. He had Villa memorabilia all over it . The bar lady went upstairs and told him there was Villa fans in the bar . He came straight down bought us all a drink and sat down with us for an hour chatting . He really loved Aston Villa .
He had some very funny stories apparently that team had some real characters and he still does not like Wilson

It was Sammy Morgan who upset Bob Wilson - or am I forgetting something?
