Benni McCarthy. Forever going to sign until he shat on us in a European tie played at the hawthorns for some reason or did I dream that up?
-
David Speedie.
-
Carlton Palmer.

Carlton Palmer.
Lock the thread, worst player never to have played for us! We dodged a bullet with Carlton.
-
Not sure if we were always linked to him, but my dad always thought that Mark Hateley would play for us at some stage.

So loan deals don't count as a signing then?

Every closed season for about 5 years 😀😀

The names that Doug would get "leaked" to the local press that we were about to sign, and the story was always just before season ticket renewal deadline day. Gazza, McCoist, even Lineker. They all shifted a few dozen more seats.
-
Grahame Sharp. Never mind we got Andy Gray instead.
-
Wasn't there talk of Les Ferdinand in 1995 ?
-
Chris Coleman
Mark Wright
Muzzy Izzet
Matty Holland

Miguel, the right back from Valencia. When O'Neill was going through his right back phobia phase. Kept being linked with him every window, but we continued to play Mellberg and Reo-Coker there instead.

Yes, I think he turned us down for Newcastle.
-
Yes our bid was accepted by qpr but he went up north
-
Jordan Rhodes?

That's a good one. His name popped up a few times a year for nearly half a decade.
Haim Revivo.

That cross is superb...

Carlton Palmer.

Palmer was a good player for Wednesday and Leeds. He wouldn't have been anywhere near the worst player to have played for us.

A billion years ago, or thereabouts, I recall us playing the stripeys seemingly every other game for a while during the chilly months. Palmer played right-back in a game at theirs. It was the worst* performance I have seen ever from anyone, in any trade whatsoever, purporting to be a professional.
*although trying to look back on it through the fog of time, he could well have been no worse than Hutton.

I'm pretty sure BFR said he was close to finalising a deal to bring Carlton Palmer to VP on the day he ended up getting the sack.

He'd been linked with Carlton Palmer pretty much from the day he got the job and I think we bid £2 million in 1992 IIRC.
When he left in Nov 1994, a few papers said we had bids in for Collywobbles and Gary Speed.

I've always been of the opinion, that if Ferdinand had have signed for us instead of Newcastle, we could both have had Premier League winners medals that season. We ended up with Savo, and although I have love for him, Ferdinand would have took us to a different level. Ferdinand and Yorke up front that season, would have destroyed all in their path.
-
Yes - agree with you Dave - Les Ferdinand was more than a little under rated.
-
Except Les should still be serving time in a workhouse for vandalising the Blue Peter garden.
-
Neil Webb from Portsmouth. Eventually signing for Forest instead and scoring a hat trick on his debut

The myth is Eliis went to show Webb the stands and how impressive they were at Villa Park. Clough told him that Webb should only be bothered with the grass in the middle of the stands. Webb signed for Cloughie.
