this from Ashley's wikipedia page -

Westwood operates primarily as a deep-lying playmaker although he is capable playing in a role higher up the midfield as well as right back. After his transfer to Aston Villa, Westwood compared himself to Michael Carrick adding that he is "someone who stays out of the limelight and keeps it simple, retaining the ball and laying it off to team-mates".[19]

sadly, he stays in the limelight for laying it off to opponents instead.

Not as bad as what he did at Leeds, least he figured out Rudy as a lone striker didn't work...
Just wish he stop using Westwood....especially in front of Hutton-Elphick. That's like an accident waiting to happen.

Ours one strength is our strikers , so why do we barter that to shore up a defense that's only comfortable when the ball on the other side of the pitch.
Just run them over by attacking for fucks sake. If we try sitting back we will lose.  :-\

Bacuna can play right-central midfield. He is useful both attack and defending, while Westwoods best direction is sideways (on a good day!).
Only game we had a good midfield this season was Gardner - Bacuna  industrious in front of a sweeping Jedinak.

Who knows if he's injured or has really pissed off SB but as he seems out the reckoning it leaves Gardner or Westwood. You could try Bacuna but not sure he's disciplined enough not too attack too much and/or head out wide, leaving Jedi on his own.

Grealish floating off Kodjia probably with Gabby and Ayew wide?

Wouldn't like to be Jedinak or Westwood tonight, not the most mobile anyway but the other four can be very lazy without the ball.

Very little consistency of shape and selection with this lineup and Leeds.

Its certainly a good time to be playing Norwich.  Think we should really go for the win and hopefully we get something.  A draw would be a decent result but with the heat turned up on them I think its a really good chance to get three points and push our promotion bid.

Bruce has done wonders with addressing the lack of fitness, morale and ending that bad streak.
Not to mention how good it is to see a coach that's involved and coaching form the sidelines during games.
But there is this nagging feeling he been a bit lucky with some results...and this fixation trying to shoe-in  Gabby and Westwood isn't exactly insightful ....

I can understand why he might 'rest' Adomah, since I thought he was poor on Saturday.
It's a slightly better team that that which turned out at Leeds but the debate about Westwood and Gardner here tells you all you need to know about our problems.

Title: Re: Norwich v Villa Match Thread
Post by: KevinGage on December 13, 2016, 07:45:31 PM
These are vulnerable.  If Bruce would deviate from the plan and actually pick a side to go at them in the first 10-15, they could fold.

My concern is he has once again gone for respect the point, hoping for Gabby to either keep hold of the ball up top (ha!) or chase lost causes (double ha!). Ayew starts at home and even though he has been a bit subdued lately, if he's good enough to start as your preferred wide option at home, he is good enough to do it away.

Kodija might be OK with drifting in from wide, but he is currently the closest thing we have to a top gun, mobile centre forward. Pick your best attackers and have a bit of balls.

Oh, and apparently Gabby played well at Brighton according to Bruce.   ::)

Wish we'd leave someone up top when the opposition have a corner

Amen to that

we got coached two men on the half way line with your arms folded and that was under 11's

Must be a good idea then.

Better than gabby wandering round in the box deciding who to try and mark

no out ball and inviting pressure back on you, dont get it

Hopefully we get a result.
Do not appoint SB and expect a team (which he did not buy) to play like Barcelona.
He will grind out results and get us promoted,
To the next level, another question.

Agreed with this. I don't think it's a lack of desire though - to me they either look nervous or unsure of how each other play. We certainly have a lack of chemistry up front which would suggest the latter.

He breaks with the ball, gives it to Kodija and then stands still. Makes no attempt to run on and get the return ball. One of the reasons he will never be top quality. No work rate or endeavour. £20k per week and he's happy. No motivation to do better

Have we got too many forward players on?
I think they are taking each others space, hence the lack of movement.

442. It screams out for 442. Why is 442 so out of fashion?

Adomah for Ayew, Grealish left, Kodj & Gabby up top, 60" Rudi for Gabby: 442!

Can we stop this fucking gabby experiment now. He's contributed as much as he did away at spurs last season.
Re:Kodjia kick out, I'm not so sure of the event. If h gets banned for that after the Newcastle our have their reds overturned then I'd be shocked.
Westwood - can't even be bothered to post loads about what we all see every bloody time. The one thing is the amount of challenges that he bottles out of by leaping just before getting to the ball is disgusting. How bad must Tish be Monday-Friday..........

Title: Re: Norwich v Villa Match Thread
Post by: Marton on December 13, 2016, 08:48:05 PM
Amavi and Chester decent, Jedi has done some important challenges but as given the ball away a fair bit. Positive is we haven't looked in much trouble, negative is we've been shit going forward.

100% this and I'm not impressed with Grealish either, what's happened to driving forwards?

Seems like we trying to play Grealish as central "9", but he isn't getting anything though to Kodjia, Gabby or Ayew. Granted he is getting no support  from Westwood behind and Jedinak never gets that far up the middle except for a few misdirected passes straight to Norwich. So Grealish ends up keeping the ball and Norwich just shuts him down.

Amavi been connecting  a few times with Kodjia but thats come to nothing..still its even worse in the middle and to the right we sorely missing AA...

Stunk the place out on live TV again.  Gollini and Elphick look shaky, Hutton and Amavi constantly making mistakes, Jedinak giving the ball away, Westwood totally anonymous, Kodjia and Ayew slowing things down to walking pace and then giving it away, Grealish no final product and Agbonlahor not involved at all.

That fat fucking potato headed wanker Gabby should be hanging from the Holte not on the pitch the bag of shit, why we still haven't paid the gormless cretins contract off is beyond me, playing with 10 men before we even start and pissing about a young player who could make a difference in to it as well.

I hate the fat slob.

Ayew can't be arsed this season, pathetic contribution and Westwood is Westwood, as much use as planting a Villa shirt wearing scarecrow in the middle of the pitch. Never thought i'd say this but get Bacuna on for Westwank and anyone on for the balding slob.

McCormack is shaping up to be our biggest waste of cash ever. What exactly does the chubby little fucker do?
He wins a lot of drinking competitions. He'd only been on 3 minutes and got caught offside while having a leisurely stroll back towards his own half. Lazy useless twat imho.

I keep thinking these players are better than this but I really am not so sure anymore.  In defence of Bruce, none of them ate his players

No defending picking Westwank and the Blob again tonight though. Set up to fail.

We've been second to everything from the very first minute & barely put 2 passes together all night. An atrocious and entirely predictable performance that's been coming for weeks.

Bruce is making the same mistake the RDM did in trying to get 4 weak willed attacking players on the pitch & is getting the same sort of performances. Our midfield is too weak to get away with just 2 (1 if you consider one of them is Westwood).

You can't win away without a midfield.  End of.

selecting only two midfielders away from home....woeful tactics

Ive seen us a few times under Bruce but dont honestly think we have improved one iota

no set up at all up front, collection of indivduals

If anything we're less creative under Bruce but the points tally is much better. He's inherited a dire midfield and unbalanced squad. Way too soon to judge him. Let's see how we do with his additions in the NY

Dreadful.
No guile, no movement and mediocre players (yes, Elphick, Gestede and McCormack: you get special mention for shiteness).

I don't think you can single out Gestede and McCormack for shiteness. They weren't on very long and the latter was unlucky not to win us a penalty.
