A friendly v Australia at Villa Park in the 80's?
i think this was the first game my Dad took my brother and I to as kids, on a Sunday morning?

Morning DBTW
I must admit I'm struggling to remember this, I was a season ticket holder throughout the 1980s and yet I can't bring this to mind. Any idea roughly what year etc...

I think it was one of Tony Daley' first appearances

Sunday 25/11/1984 at Villa Park. Attendance 2550
Australia 2-0. HT 1-0
Goals: Curbishley, Birch
Team: Spink, Williams, Gibson, Glover, Ormsby, Curbishley, Birch, Walters, Kerr, Cowans, Daley
Subs used: Norton, Dorigo, Palin, Bradley, Gibson (was subbed off and later subbed back on)
I’ll see if I can dig out the match report (I think was reported in the Mail)

Thanks to all of you for helping. Ive just managed to find and order a programme, which I will get framed and give to my dad for Christmas

Couldn't remember Palin at all .
Leigh Palin didn't play a first team game for us but did fairly well in the lower divisions. His dad played for Wolves and mainly Walsall. Sadly passed on a few weeks ago.

The only things I can remember about the match were Tony Daley's speed and Peter Withe sitting in a box in Trinity Road with his feet up, having a Sunday lunchtime pint or two.

I remember the game as I went to it. Australia weren't much cop back then and we won relatively comfortably. Either just before or after there was another friendly when Ellis came on for the last 10-15 mins or so. He then invented the bicycle kick.

Here's the Mail & Post snippets. The Express & Star had a lightly more to detailed report (that's where I got the team info from).
For some reason I never got a print out of it when I looked it up at Wolverhampton Archives (probably someone else was using the printer at the time!). Its worth another visit as its a lovely old building, but with its reduced opening times now, its difficult to do.

Note the clever way Tony Stephens got the match sponsors into a story there. Letting him go was as big a mistake as anything else we did at that time.
