I was lucky enough to be t this game. It was 2 days before Xmas if I recall correctly.
I remember the first leg when we played at Old Trafford in that great yellow & blue kit. I remember tickets for the 2nd leg being on sale one Sunday morning and my dad took me to queue up at around 6 am. The tickets were being sold through the turnstiles of the Trinity Road enclosure and by the time we got to the ground, the queues were all the way round. As we were walking away from the ground, a policeman parted the queue in order to allow a car to turn into what is now the car park between the Holte and the Holte pub. I think it was a bingo hall at the time. My dad quickly pulled me in and we joined the queue at the back of where it had been parted, pushing in. I was really embarrassed but it didn't bother my dad and it saved us a few hours as we were away within about half an hour of the tickets going on sale.
I watched the game from the front of the Trinity Road enclosure and it was great to watch Best, Law and Charlton although my eyes were firmly on the Villa players, Brian Godfrey, Andy Lochhead, Chico and Pat McMahon. it was an amazing feeling to beat them, even though I was only 10. We matched them all the way over 2 legs and was probably our biggest giant killing since I've been watching them.
I wonder what Steve Stride is doing now and whether he still follows the Villa?

I was with him a couple of weeks ago. He was doing some work for Uefa as an observer at Europe/Champions League games (he did the Supercup a couple of years ago) but mostly gave that up when his son was ill last year. He still goes to the match regularly.

We must be of a similar vintage. I also queued up with my dad but think we were down there from about 3:00 a.m and there were what seemed like thousands in front of us. I remember my old man getting really annoyed by some bloke and his son queue jumping. ;-)
The game itself was probably when the Villa bug really bit, the atmosphere was like nothing I had ever experienced before.

Queued with my Dad and his friend. We joined the queue almost down by Witton island at about 7am. Probably down to me age at the time but the impact the match had on me was as great as the European Cup Final. My three greatest games would without doubt be this one, European Cup Final and the Liverpool 5-1 match.

I was at U.M.I.S.T at the time - I couldn't make the home leg -but I was there at OT- standing in the gangway on the Stretford End Paddock - the corner between the Stretford End and the main stand
Don't remember too much - except my 'muted' yell & fist pump at Andy's goal

I spoke to John Lerwill around 2009 and he told me that Villa had unearthed around 50 minutes of footage from the home leg from ITC media I think. This was to be cleaned up and made into a dvd and made available for sale. Sadly this never happened. The club have sat on this for 7 years. As we know Lerwill left under a bit of a cloud I think. I gave the club a dvd of the 2 missing goals from the European Cup FC Valur away leg - you'll note that the official dvd hasn't got these on it. To my knowledge they have not shown the 2 Gary Shaw goals.

My first ever away game as a ten year old was the first leg at old Trafford with my grandad and his mates.
Even now I can still see Brian Kidd dancing through and putting yanited 1-0 up then the loudest noise I have ever heard as big andy rose and thumped in the equaliser I was right at the front and in line with him and can still hear the ball thumping off his head into the back of the net

Next April I have completed 60 years of going down Villa Park. That second leg remains (and is likely to remain) the best game Aston Villa has taken part in my lifetime. Far far better than the European Cup Final which was deadly quiet by comparision.
We were wonderful.

All the more reason for the club to release the footage they've got on a dvd. They could add interviews with ex-players and fans who were there (I was!). Agree, it was some experience to witness that match and feel the terrific atmosphere.

I was at both games. The passion at the Villa game was awesome, simply wonderful.
I remember standing at the local train station after the Old Trafford with dozens of Utd fans bouncing up and down as they moved towards two Villa fans trapped against a wall. It was frightening. My scarf was safely tucked into my coat.

Guess it is a case of wish I was there. the likes of Loftus Road, Manor Ground and Prenton Park weren't exactly cordons of atmosphere.

Not far behind you Ron...my brother took me down about 1960 when I was 6...I was 15 years old, and just the right age to wallow in it, for the two games in 1970 and agree ...that second leg was the most exciting Villa game I've ever attended...full of hope and optimism, you could just feel something very special happening during the game...and it did.
Best Christmas present I've ever had!

I have to be honest and say that at the age of 10 and only having been to Villa Park a few times previously, it was probably a bit too soon for me to really appreciate the occasion.
For me, the two stand out games for drama and atmosphere were the Tranmere semi-final and the away trip to Wednesday for Big Ron's first game. Sadly, I have clearer memories of queuing up for the bloody tickets than I do of the actual United semi final.

Was also at the Bristol Rovers Quarter Final with my big brother, we drew 1-1 and beat them in the replay 1-0, Mahogony scored both goals, the one at Eastville, Rovers old 'shed' of a ground, was after 52 seconds on a sticky mud bath of a pitch.
Beating Manure was the game I will always remember, it is hard to believe 62,500 in that ground, and this is before accurate attendance records, it was probably more.
The noise when Andy's winner went in I will never forget, even above winning the Championship and European cup.
Brian Godfrey was superb that night, he was perpetual motion.
Anyone else remember that after the euphoria we went to Walsall two games later and were thumped 3-0?

I remember on MOTD, the night of the Walsall game, Jimmy Hill commented on the fact that 100's of Villa fans had stormed the ground (presumably because they had been locked out)

Although I wasn't at that game, I remember it well - I went to school in Walsall and the anti-Villa feeling all around was evident. I got a lot of stick when I returned after Christmas that year (1970-71).
