Not sure how that tem is going to line up really.  4-4-2 with Ayew and McCormack out wide?  Thought Kojdia linked up well with Gestede when he came on at the weekend, so don't mind that partnership being given a chance.

442?

Based on who's in the team it's virtually 4-2-4.

McCormack on the left apparently.

I think on the pitch it will look more like a 4-2-2-2

Given the height up front it strikes me as very silly for Amavi not to be in that team ahead of Cissokho.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Brentford Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on September 14, 2016, 06:57:24 PM
I'd imagine McCormack left in a 442 or a 4231 with ayew and kodjia wide of McCormack

RDM seems to continually be over confident on players' fitness. I thought adomah and Tish might be fit. It appears grealish isn't either

I think with Amavi being so forward thinking and with 4 forwards on the pitch he's probably going with Cissokho's tiny, tiny advantage in defending ... ish.

You're almost certainly right.

Just seems frustrating that having 13ft of centre forward on the pitch and no bugger to cross it to them is straight out of the Sherwood playbook.

"Hi Paul, Roberto here. Tell me, what did you do when you absolutely needed to get a win with the Villa?"

"Well I remember this one time we needed to get a couple of goals in the second half against Bradford City..."

To be fair, it makes some sense when you consider how much better we were in the second half than the first on Sunday.

I'd say it's stronger defensively than Sunday - Jedinak for Gardner

It could simply be the same formation with kodjia or ayew in grealish's position. Is that really so much less robust? It's physically a lot stronger. I thought grealish was the weakest of our attackers on Sunday anyway.

If it's a proper 424 then I withdraw this!

Bonkers line up, really worrying with RDM now. Bradford esque again with no balance at all to the midfield, our left flank is a joke. Gestede did well the last day coming in but you can't just start him as part of four forwards.

2 midfielders neither particularly mobile will have to do the running of the front 6.

Should have been
Gollini, De Laet, Elphick, Chester, Cissokho, Ayew, Jedinak, Westwood, Amavi, Mccormack, Kodija.

Post by: Proposition Joe on September 14, 2016, 08:42:20 PM
Let the de-villa-fication of Villa begin today - come out 2nd half like a train and blast 2 or 3 more goals, with the defence not making any stupid errors and keeping a comfortable clean sheet.

It's not going to happen, is it?  Brentford will score within 5mins of the restart.  They will push us back for the entire 2nd half and we won't be able to string two passes together and we will lose to a late goal from a defensive howler.

Not good enough. He has to be given time. But 1 win is pretty pathetic. Different players, but, at the moment, not a lot has changed. Difficult to understand why.

We played so well on Sunday, I, stupidly, thought this was it. We were ready to push on. It seems not.

The annoying thing is I don't think we're a bad side now but we're so overloaded up front our midfield just gets overrun the minute the opposition get their act together and you have to blame the manager.

I agree. If the fucking Albion thought he was half decent we should have given him a wide berth. We may as well have Sherwood in charge.

I'm generally against pulling the trigger too soon but RDM has zero presence and shows absolutely no evidence that he has a clue about how to put these payers together.

We do..but we just can't keep playing 4231 with a midfield 2 of gardner and or westwood. Until we start taking these chances he needs to shore the midfield up and start dominating possession...I admire the attacking intent, but when it's not working, have the balls to admit it and change it.

Hi, Brentford fan here.

Hope you don't think I'm being too presumptuous in popping in to give you some advice about coping with life in the Champioship. It's our third year here and we've learnt quite a bit along the way.

Firstly, never underestimate your opponents. The majority of Villa fans are fine but there was a lot of pre-match talk about 'annihilating a pub team' and there are comments here assuming you should be easily beating 'the likes of Brentford'. Show some humility and, like Burnley last year, you still have a good chance of going up. Remain arrogant and the fate of Leeds awaits you.

Secondly, don't assume that because in the summer you spent more than Brentford in their entire history that you're in for an easy ride. We're familiar with Kodija, McCormack and Gestede and we've thrashed Bristol City, Fulham and Blackburn when they've been playing for them. (Mind you, it was a great goal by Kodija). The truth is that you've probably overpaid for these players whereas we, through necessity, pick up underpriced bargains from the lower leagues. Ryan Woods, anyone?

Thirdly, give some credit to the opposition. You may not have previously been able to name any of our players or even locate Brentford on a map but there are some good teams in this league and you will find it difficult to beat them. Perhaps your underperformance last night was due to Brentford not allowing you to play. (And no-one here seems to have mentioned Scott Hogan's wrongly disallowed goal).

Fourthly, less of the patronising 'you raised your game because it's your Cup Final' stuff. Leeds are still coming out with this and they still haven't been able to beat us. Be smart, don't be like Leeds.

That's not to say that Brentford didn't enjoy Villa Park last night. It's a great old-school stadium with history and character. We look forward to welcoming you to our more humble abode next year.
