Title: The African Cup Of Nations.
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on August 30, 2016, 11:08:49 PM
I am dead pleased with our transfer dealings but have we thought this through?

With the way their groups are positioned, Ayew, Gestede and Kodije are all going to play in this competition.  In addition if Adomah signs he is likely to play for Ghana.

The worst case scenario for Villa is if the manager's of the nations call their players up early, then they miss games between 2nd January and 5th February (obviously not all the teams will make it to the final).  Which means that games against Cardiff, Bristol City, Preston, Wolves, Brentford and Forest we could be without all or a combination of three.  We need a seriously good run between now and New Year.

Could get in early and arrange a couple of loans from MLS.

Gestede is far from guaranteed to be involved. Benin may need to get a draw or even a win away to Mali. Ivory Coast could still miss out but only in the event of an unlikely home defeat by Sierra Leone.

It's a chance for Hepburn-Murphy to step up.

I agree we would need at least one more player in, and a loan from Major League Soccer or the Chinese Super League may be a decent shout as both leagues will be in recess.

3 months for Gabby to get fit.  Let's see what tomorrow brings too, but I think we can assume Gestede would be back quite early, while Kodjia, Ayew and Adomah would make it though quite far.  6 games is a blow to lose all 3, but McCormack and Kozak will be here.  If Kozak is actually fit for the next 3 months he might be a bit of a revelation too.

I don't think Admoah and Kodjia actually play much for their national teams. Adomah hasn't been in the Ghanian squad since 2014 and Kodjia who has recentlly been capped in two friendlies has 5 other forwards to compete with.

Let's hope neither make their squads then!

Adomah looks like he won't woven is a good thing. Which would mean we could still put some pace around big Libor

There really are some irritating pedants on here with seemingly nothing better to do with their time.

Ivory Coast will almost certainly qualify which is annoying.

Will have 4 months to set up a loan to start Jan 1st if the worst case scenario occurs + Gabby might be back in squad by then :-)

Don't feel like you have to waste your time on here then.

Can we request matches to be postponed if we have so many players off on international duty?

Asked about what will happen during the African Nations, although it's not really a biggy... Tony replied:

"We have plan for this. Will get several loans and 1/2 ins in Jan. Don't worry bout it. #UTV"

Gestede not currently looking like he'll go. Benin 3-1 down and need a point

I think ayew and kodjia are nailed on

They're 5-1 down and other results are going/have gone against them.

Gestede will be available in January barring injury/suspension.

Gestede and McCormack will go okay...hopefully plus any signings.

That's a shame, I was hoping that they would qualify!

So if understand this correctly, you would want another Villa striker unavailable for our promotion push? One who is more than capable at Championship level.

Haha, you could be right. And it's entirely possible that Grumpyville is a town/city in Benin.

He needs to if he's lifting heavy boxes.

Does Tshibola have any African blood in him with that surname?

I don't know if he's played for any England age group teams but if he plays regularly for us someone will get in touch probably.

Eligible for England or Democratic Republic of the Congo. Has played for England under-18s but could still switch.

At his age, I'd imagine he'd likely wait to see if England call but you never know.

DRC have qualified for the African Cup of Nations, and are also through to the final Group Stage of qualifying for the World Cup. If they qualify for the latter I suppose switching to play for them would become a more attractive option.

Just to clarify, who are we losing (assuming they get picked)?

Kodjia, Adomah and Ayew, anyone else?

Ayew is nailed on, Kodjia is looking ever more likely for Ivory Coast and Adomah will probably need to have the half season of his life to be called up.

Nobody else at risk.

Er, yes, he's really smashing those defences down isn't he? Benin didn't get through did they? So he WILL be playing for Villa, unfortunately. I am hoping that we have signed someone else, rather than rely on Rudy. He's ok, but isn't as good as I want him to be.

I hope kodjia is better than gestede

I can't see why anyone would want gestede to be unavailable to force our hand on  selection

Well Gestede is shit, so if Kodjia isn't better than Gestede then he's got to be proper proper shit.

According to Fifa website there's world cup qualifying games on Monday 3rd October....

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminaries/africa/index.html

That can't be right surely otherwise we'll struggle to put a team out v Preston!
