Our official Twitter getting it wrong again having Gardner in the middle. It's not the midfield I was hoping for. I guess Jedinak's paperwork didn't come in or he just need to practice with the squad before being involved.

Seen a Twitter no Tish or Jedinak and Gardner starts.
If so, that has removed any confidence I had of winning.

That's the immediate reaction though as soon as you read Westwood's name. Replace with Jedinak it feels better. Hopefully next week

If as predicted Derby play 4-1-4-1 I can see it being bullied. RDM is obviously thinking we'll spend all game attacking with Grealish, Ayew, Ross Mc and Rudy.

With that side, 3-1 Derby.

An insurance policy against that most sickening of results

Agree, would be v surprised if we win now

It's not just that he's been so bad, it's that with four attackers you really need your midfield two to be great

Well that midfield is beyond feeble. Can't see us getting anything now tbh. At least we've got Jedinak to shore it up after today, but I'd have changed the shape today and put Amavi left mid.

If nothing else we will create chances and when we do we have to take them. Because we're not going to rely on that midfield providing any protection to our defence.

Arguably out 3rd and 4th choice midfield pairing. Could be tough or the pressure of knowing they are 3rd and 4th choice could inspire.

Here's a leftfield idea, but how about signing better players than him?

He's been on the books for four years now - 100+ appearances.

If he was going to turn into David Platt mkII or even just a vaguely competent and effective central midfielder we would have seen it by now.

Maybe he won't play when Tish and Jedinak are available, but when either are not, I'd rather Westwood played than Gardner.

With that midfield it's probably best to go with MON tactics and bypass the midfield altogether and hoof it up to Rudi in the chance that he'll get a knock-on.

Now can somebody explain to me the logic of putting Richards on the bench?

Richards on the bloody bench again. Why?

Disturbing, how he continues to be given a pass into the squad while others are bomb squad(ed) beggars belief.

Four defenders on bench, two of them shit right backs. Green and Kozak untried really and Gardner starting.

Could be a high scoring game but think we will be ripped a new one in midfield

Think about the logic of it:

Bacuna gets injured or pushed up to midfield you bring on Hutton.

Chester gets injured, you bring on Baker.

Elphick gets injured, you move Chester over to the right and bring on Baker.

Under what circumstances would you ever bring on Richards?

McCormack would be a very good player in the Premier league. Having seen him 3-4 times now, hes quality. Carson made a great save there though.

Again though, like in earlier games, we are not getting the luck. Hitting the bar etc. We need to start getting a few of those, a few of the 50/50s dropping for us.

It's precisely what was being said vs Huddersfield. We played some lovely stuff and should have been out of sight but got bitten in the balls in the end. Need to convert these chances today.

Aye, surprised at Derby. Look like they've had xanax for the pre match meal.

If this continues, I'm Sure Pearson will have them fired up for the second half, so lets try and cash in now.

We've played well so far and unlucky not to be two up, but Pearson will put a rocket up them and they'll come out and play in the second half - similar to what Huddersfield did in the week. We could well rue missed chances - and when you're on top you have to score or you end up paying for it. But I'm encouraged how well we're playing and we'll only get better with Jedinak to come into the midfield. The team need to realise that Gestede has gone off though and change the long ball looking for his flick-ons.

Dominant but worrying that we haven't created clear cut chances. Lack of pace up top will really hurt us in this division. Bacuna, Westwood and Grealish have been excellent so far. Having a keeper and two centre backs that don't crap themselves when in possession helps a lot.

Good shot aside, we were effectively playing with ten men with Gardner in midfield. I can't recall a ball he has taken off our centre backs. He is playing at least five yards too far forward leaving Westwood to do it all with linking up the play. Those ten men became nine after Kozak's introduction unfortunately. Shifting Ayew up top and Green on would have been a better change. Ayew and Mccormack have gone out of the game since Gestede went off, need to get them back in it somehow.

Agree. Gardner has a lovely deadball / long shot but not much else.  Feels like the rest of the midfield are carrying him.

Pretty decent. One of those shits off the woodwork goes in and we'd be happy.
Think Derby will start strong so soaking up and a goal on the break in the first 15 would be nice.

Ayew a little too much running around a fox hole. Compare with Grealish who looks incentive and the conduit for our good play.

Gardner and Westwood solid, haven't needed to be anything else as we've made the most of the wings.

There's no such thing as a must win game at this stage but it would give us great confidence to get a couple of goals and see this out for 3 points. Clean sheet would be marvellous too.

I'm glad you've all found a new scapegoat means that Westwood and Bacuna aren't getting quite the amount of slagging off they normally do.

For me Gardner and Westwood as a pair have been far better than the 3 that derby have in there and I don't really understand why you all feel the need to rip into one of our players all game.

Lowest pass accuracy of the outfield players with the exception of Bacuna, 72% (versus 90% for Westwood for example). I'm not suggesting that he needs to be put in the stocks and pelted with rotten tomatoes for that, but to suggest he's not really having a huge impact on the game doesn't strike me as the most outlandish of claims.

The word I was to use does begin with f and usually gets paired with another but you carry on trying to be clever, I'll judge Gardner based on how he's playing not on having already decided he's not good enough.

I'm not saying I'm a better fan than anyone, just that every mistake by Gardner has been picked up and slagged off but the 90% of th etime where he's done exactly what you'd want is being ignored.  The truth is that he's had an average game and will get 6 or 7 out of 10 from any impartial judge but from some on here that will be far too high because they've already decided he's a 4-5 out of 10 player so that's what they see.

Nice to see you being our normal thin-skinned self though.

We are a tiny number of games into an outrageously long league calendar.

I'm not too worried, it always takes time for teams to settle into this league, plus we've got lots of new players (either in or en route) and new management at the club.

No one else decided to make an argument out of it though and Gardner is being scapegoated.  We've still been, in my opinion, marginally the better team.  You don't do that if both of your central midfielders are playing utterly shit as anyone reading this thread would believe.  In truth Westwood and Gardner have protected the defence reasonably well and have got the ball to Grealish, RM and Ayew quickly, which is what they should be doing.

If you want to pick a reason for us still being 0-0 it's that Kozak looks half fit so we're light up front but we don't have many options to change it.

We all know how this is going to end here don't we.

Although very frustrating, we should have this long tied up, the positive for RdM is how much better we are than last season, and that is without Jedinak and Tshibola and the other players we are looking to bring in.

Not that it won't be another kick in the balls when we lose this.

You'll have to point out where I've done that.

Where you've said exactly what I quoted?  It's literally right there, should I make it bold for you?

To simplify, saying someone is playing shit in a single game and justifying it by saying he's been shit in other games is just fundamentally wrong.  My point all along was that people had already decided Gardner was going to be shit before kick off and they're ignoring anything that doesn't fit that so they can carry on calling him shit.  The truth is he's done his job pretty well today, as have the entire team except for Gestede and Kozak.

As a sub in a game away from home when you're main striker has been taken off? I think it would be the perfect opportunity. No one says he has to play every game. Lord knows he has the talent.

Sorry, I thought you were talking in general terms re our options up front.

What did Gardner do? Give the ball away in our own final third? (Genuinely don't know as not watching) Standard I'm afraid

Unless I've missed anything, he lunged in and conceded a free kick just outside our penalty box.

We've been the better side, as we were in our last game with little or no luck and we had luck the quality was lacking. One day those shots that hit the woodwork will go in, but right now it is frustrating to see us labouring to a point. It will get better but it will take us getting 3 or 4 more players in.

Poor. Still far too much rubbish in the team.

We need to create more chances all around, I think.

Hitting the woodwork from distance shows something, but we need to create "scuff it in from three yards" style chances, really.

Jedinak, Tshibola and Westwood will make a decent enough midfield. We were too soft there again today I think.

We haven't had a scruffy goalscorer for aeons.

Funny you should say that. As much as I predict a result on the pre match thread I always find it isn't until kick off that I realise my true feelings. At kick off I thought "I would take a draw".

Our new goalkeeper frightens me a bit though to be honest.

If you don't have anyone in place to scuff it in from 3 yards then those chances don't get created because the balls that would lead to them just fall to  a defender to clear comfortably.  That's why a proper 9 with some mobility and awareness in the box is so important.

I know we are talking generally as opposed to specifically but I think the scruffiest goal I can remember was Cascarino against Derby at The Holte End under Dr Jo. 3-2 to us I think.

anybody willing to state a case FOR westwood

Harsh on today's performance. Thought he was tidy with the ball and a few good interceptions.

With Jedinak and Tsibola I think he's fine for 3rd choice or part of a 3 as and when.  Would I like a better player in? Yes Do I think it's the immediate area of concern? No.

Oh dear. Sub subbed. I know there are mitigating circumstances but that's not good.

You've got to question his inclusion in the first place.

A useful way of reminding Dr Tony he needs that forward player.
