Doesn't that feel good?
-
Superb!
-
Hooraaaay
-
Nice job.
-
Another shit day, but I tell you what, that team we were playing wearing blue and claret shirts look half decent.
-
A convincing home win and clean sheet just what was required.
With another game on Tuesday momentum will be key this year.
-
Doesn't that feel good?
doesn't it just - A happy smiley face, can't remember the last time
-
🎉💥🎉😀😀😀
-
Very good indeed. It's Rotherham so tempered expectations but great to get the first win. Beat Huddersfield and we can start to feel a little more positive. Throw in Jedinak and Bamford and Ledley and we might be in very good shape.
-
So much better. Three new players coming in too! Things will look a whole lot better if we beat Huddersfield on Tuesday night. Clean sheet too.
-
Anyone have a link to the goals? Pref. not a Facebook link as it's blocked at work

Just got in to see the score, so happy! How did we play?
-
We have the tools to hurt teams. Chester and Elphick are the best centre halves in the league. Get it right we should fly. Great result. Get the Rudy flying and hes bloody hard to handle.
Adama lives.
-
so that's what it feels like!!!
-
That's it for these pants.
-
Win, 3 points, clean sheet, more than 1 goal in a game, positive goal difference.
I thought only other teams were allowed to use these words and phrases.
Looks like forcing myself to stay up until 02:30 for the highlights show tomorrow night/Monday morning.
-
Well, tonight's settled 🍻🍺🍻🍺🍹. Perhaps not the last one!
-
Feels better. Need a win on Tuesday now to keep the belief up, Huddersfield should be much more of a test.
-
Another shit day, but I tell you what, that team we were playing wearing blue and claret shirts look half decent.
What do you mean?

It's just a start, that's all.
Bloody good though........
-
Any vids of Jack's goal?
-
A massive boost keeping a clean sheet. Well done lads!

I was making a joke, i.e. so unused to winning I assumed we'd lost. With hindsight, it was clumsier than Emile Heskey trying to thread a needle with his toes. Oh well.
More seriously, it's a great win, but we have to be wary of Huddersfield next - no pushovers, for sure.

I think it's a catchy blend of irony, absurdism and contraryness as a humouristic reaction to the team in claret and blue actually winning a f¤¤¤¤¤g game.

Stood waiting for the train back to Brum happy. What a bizarre feeling. 3-0 flattered Rotherham. A bit of confidence and we looked a totally different team.

Well done Villa. It's going to make a lovely change going out to the pub tonight with a win in the bag.
How did Adama play when he came on?

Tuscans to keep match thread duty
-
Great win. Newcastle and leeds lost. Happy days. Got some congratulatory texts from people at work.
Did Chester look good?
-
A word for Jordan Ayew who played really well, and just hated coming off. I love his desire and passion. He needs to keep it in check because he does play on the edge but he is the best player in the division on his day.
-
Can't wait for Match of the Day 😭😭😭😭😭

What we need is for Tuscans to start every Match Thread. He played a blinder.
-
Great result, have only seen the first 2 goals but they were great and should do wonders for our confidence. And a clean sheet. Dreamland.
-
Interesting stats from the game according to the beeb. Rotherham had 51% of the game and 9 shots on target. I think we still need to tighten up in areas but this feels much more positive and gives us something to build on. Huddersfield will be a tougher test but I think we have too much for them. Great to see Traore back in the squad.

Went to Rd gym this morning and when I got changed I realised I hadn't any fresh pants so I've been going camoflage all day. This is obviously the secret to Villa winning. From henceforth I shall be sans undervetements for every Villa fixture. You can thank me at the end of the season.

Actually enjoying a game. This will never catch on!
Excellent performance that should have seen at least another 3 goals. Ayew is the best player in this league by a mile. MUST keep hold of him

Couldn't give a fcuk about the Rags this season (or any season, for that matter). But anything that pisses on Newcastle's chips is just dandy.

It's not Gestede. It's Dwight Yorke circa 1995 with a Gestede mask on.

I was half expecting him to get on his knees and head it in. It was the sort of defending you see at a school playground and Jack made the most of it.

do what I did Neil. Google Hola VPN and add the extension to Google Chrome. Then go the Sky Sports link above and when you are told not allowed to watch there will be a little Hola icon in the top right and unblock UK. It shows the highlights after that.

The post match walk back to the car Trinity Road in the sunshine felt good today! Can't criticise a single player today and although it was only Rotherham, it was very encouraging. Thought Elphick and Chester looked like they had been playing for some time rather than a couple of days. Tshibola had a good game in midfield and Grealish showed some lovely touches at times as did McCormack, though he still looks to be lacking that bit of sharpness. Gestede took his goals well (the header in particular) and Ayew looked dangerous. I'd also give a mention to Bacuna and Cissokho who had solid games at full-back. As I said, only Rotherham, but something to build on.
One thing I noticed that I really liked was that after the game Ayew seemed to be having a bit of a sulk on the touchline. Elphick saw him and told him to get on and applaud the fans and he came on.
-

9 shots, 1 on target. TBH possession can be a false stat, for example we had 56% against Luton and Huddersfield had 35% today. It will be interesting how much the defence of Elphick AND Chester make a difference now when we don't have the ball.
-
A lovely, lovely ROUTINE 3 - 0 home win.
And I must say, Tshibola was absolutely immense, man of the match by a mile.

Can't remember the last time I've left Villa Park in a good mood. Well done Villa, excellent win.
Like the look of the new players and we have the basis of a decent team with a chance of promotion. A few more signings and we'll be back where we belong next season!
-
Sorry; couldn't resist the title edit.
Only a joke I know, but we shouldn't start patronising any clubs yet, theres an awfully long way to go.
-
Stuck at Brum International. In addition to all the foregoing praise, how good it was to see Tommy Elphick talking to the referee. We have not had a captain doing that for years. It settles the players who don't go kamikaze and it stops the ref going into anti Villa mode. Wonderful captain. Wonderful day. Perfect day to be thrown off a train with a dud ticket a hundred miles from home.
-
If we get some confidence behind us we'll do some real damage to this division, especially attackwise. You could see the players improve after we scored. Rudy was laying off one touch passes, Ayew was terrifying them, even Sisko was doing some nice stuff.
-

I think Dave is pointing out the posts on here and elsewhere that state "I know it was only Rotherham but....", not having a pop at the club himself.

Good result, good performance. Having a decent CH pairing will make a world of difference too and it'll help our fullbacks out no end. If you've got two solid in the middle, and a half decent defensive mid, then you can afford to have an attacking fullback who may not necessarily be great defensively. Today that is Bacuna, another day it may be Amavi. It just gives them license to attack and if they leave gaps, a decent pairing in the center of defense won't get pulled all over the shop trying to cover.
Attack wise, if you give Gestede service he will score. You have to play to his strengths. Funnily enough his second goal seemed totally un-Gestede like. Great movement to anticipate the flick on, left the defenders for dead and a cute finish. The first was classic Rudy though. We still need another option up top as we could do with a mobile option. Someone who can play on the shoulder of the last man or work the channels. Do that and we've got a great mix. I think even as things stand you've got three strikers here in Gestede, McCormack and Ayew who could hit 15 goals a piece in their own right in this division. It's a long old season though and we still need another variant up top unless we've enough faith in RHM.
Grealish showed today that he will tear up this league given the chance.
Huddersfield will be tougher but we should be beating them. Villa park needs to be imposing again. We pulled in 33k. We need to make this place intimidating for the opposition and comfortable for us.
-
Am in a state of shock, trying to remember when we last won 3-0 at home, can't, don't care.
-
Some team spirit appeared to be in danger of breaking out! Great to go home happy at last.
Bigger crowd than I expected. Gestede won everything in the air, the defence looked a lot better- I thought Cissokho had a really solid game.
-
Happy, such a strange sensation.
loving OUR NUMBER10,
Confidence, that's all it is, even scisoko got it at the end. Jacks Back, we do need that strong midfielder, and we wont be far away.
Time to Drink our victory.
LOVE ASTON VILLA , LOVE OUR TONY.

Momentum will be a massive part of this season. And going on long unbeaten runs will be critical to positioning ourselves appropriately for the run in come March.
-
What a fantastic afternoon! Dr Tone on the pitch before the game bowing to the fans, great performance, great result, clean sheet, great atmosphere, and at last a feelgood factor on the way back home. Rudy should have had his hat-trick after a superb run by Ayew put it on a plate for him, and I thought Jack had overrun the ball before he slotted it in. Thought the whole team played well but, as he normally gets so much stick (including from me), a special mention for Bacuna at right back who had probably his best game for us so far - maybe we don't need a new RB after all. And a special mention for Elphick - a proper defender and a proper captain. All afternoon he was directing the other defenders and for once we looked solid at the back. And at the end of the game when the players were heading towards the tunnel he called them back to come to the Holte to acknowledge the fans. And to cap it off an intelligent manager giving his appraisal of the performance in the post match interview. Haven't felt this good after a Villa game for absolutely ages. Long may it continue
-
It's my Sisters wedding day today and it's been a great day. Even better when I could interrupt the photos to let me old man know the score updates!

Anyway I think it was aimed more at certain fans from the "lets not carried away" camp who might say "we only beat Rotherham you know".

Mr Green the old bloke who can't read the small print on a Super Off Peak ticket and an Off Peak ticket. Not valid during the hours of daylight when there is not an R in the month.

I thought Ayew and Grealish were excellent. I know Grealish scored but the one frustrating thing about him is his poor shooting. If he gets that right he'd complete and we'd have a star on our hands.

Jack's reluctance to shoot is frustrating. For the goal it was almost like he was thinking 'oh, do I really have to shoot' before having a go. Either that or he had a bet with Ayew that he could score from an even more acute angle than Jordan did at Luton.
JustHead had a couple of moments of poor control but that was probably his best all round game for Villa. Shame that he missed the hat trick shot

Lots of positives today ....... but we should remember it is a work in progress and surely we can only get better ....
The defence looked stronger today and you didn't feel an error was coming at any second
Had Rudy scored early in the second half I think it would have been 5 or 6 ........ so pleased we didn't concede at 2-0 as panic could have set in
New signings in the right places and we will be up there all season ......
Great crowd today and what a feeling to head for home smiling ....... lets follow it up now on Tuesday

He's a f#ckin beast! He could tear up this league along with Ayew and Grealish.
-
That felt good!
I thought the Holte End were brilliant today.
I hope the good Doctor enjoyed himself!
-
I'd forgotten what it is like to have a comprehensive win.
Not only that, a clean sheet, too. If we are going to get promoted, we'll need to win matches like this on a regular basis. That is not to denigrate the win (look what happened against a league two side a few days ago, so we can take nothing for granted), because this is a tough league with a fast flow of fixtures. We can win matches like this, and we need to realise we can, and get into the habit of doing it.
Win the easily winnable matches and do ok in the tougher ones and we'll put ourselves in with a chance. Good start today.
-
I enjoyed it. I can't remember the last time I posted that. And Traore will fucking murder this league if we keep him fit.
How did Adama get on?
-
Has the replay for the first goal come on yet?
-
Without seeing him today I think Adama will be a perfect last twenty minute sub at this stage of his development. He will slaughter tired defences.
-
Just got back. Started ok, looked a bit nervous but then when the goal went in you could see them relax and play better. 2nd half was excellent. A few things: We need to keep hold of Ayew, we need a more bite in midfield and a replacement for Bacuna.
That will do confidence a lot of good, some of the play late on showed that. Onwards and upwards!
-
Without seeing him today I think Adams will be a perfect last twenty minute sub at this stage of his development. He will slaughter tired defences.

tbf I thought Bacuna did really well today, DB

Excellent result, really enjoyed today.
-
tbf I thought Bacuna did really well today, DB
His name was greeted with a smattering of boos at the start but most just kept clapping. I thought he did very well and has obviously decided to ensure his Champion's League medal the long way and stay with us until we win it in 2019
-
Also Sheffield Wednesday's performance at Norwich showed they're going to be very competitive.
-
Excellent result, really enjoyed today.
Hopefully we will get bored with it by May Lizz

I think the redemption of Bacuna is nearly complete.

It's a bit of a bonus they do exist then. They exist to keep the riff raff away!
-
You know alls well with the Universe when we score from a throw in!
-
Probably way to early to make such a suggestion but the results may have gine our way today with Derby and Newcastle losing, Norwich and Sheff Weds drawing.
-
I was sceptical about the line up. But it would be really nice if we could go a good chunk of the season playing so many attacking players
Still want a new no 9, plus a proper defensive midfielder
Huddersfield will be more of a test. But if we can rack up back to back wins that would be great. The real test will be next time we go a goal behind though.
How did Tish and Westwood play?
-
tbf I thought Bacuna did really well today, DB
Bacuna, Gestede and particularly Westwood did well. Everyone did but after all the stick they've taken those three deserve some credit today.
I enjoyed it, as much for some of the quality play as the result, but I don't think we'll come up against many poorer teams than Rotherham.
Only negative for me was the pretty embarrassing "Shit support" and "empty seats" chants from the Holte End. Singing it at Hillsborough and Luton was bad enough but we had about 8,000 empty ones today.
I stood in front of a grown man at Luton the other night who joined in with "is this a library". For fuck's sake, we were Aston Villa at a 4th division club, not a non-league club at Old Trafford!
-
I hate the 'shit support' chant, I cringe every time.

15 minute cameo but at one point he skinned half of their team. So the defence tried to kick him off the balk and bounced off him. They hardly left their box for 5 minutes afterwards just in case he ran at them again.

I enjoyed it. I can't remember the last time I posted that. And Traore will fucking murder this league if we keep him fit.

Jesus, Gestede scoring a lovely dinked goal, then doing a double somersault and backflip to celebrate! What the actual fuck?!
He must think he is in Rio going for a gold in the gymnastics.
He'd be a bit out of place - I don't think they have donkeys on Copacabana beach.

On a day he scored two and helped make the other can we not disrespect him for a bit.
-
I thought Ayew and Grealish were excellent.
Saying that, I thought he looked good on the left hand side today.
-
I'd forgotten what it is like to have a comprehensive win.
This is a really good point. There are probably 8-9 teams that with our players we should be able to walk all over, and win comfortably. That should be 14-15 easy ish wins. Add another 10 wins from the middle section and do ok against the top, and you are pretty much there.

The one thing I did pick up on, was that unlike Agbonlahor and others before, McCormack actually read Gestede's flick ons and picked up quite a few of them.

I thought he looked better when he moved inside and across the Rotherham defence. He is not a left winger - in my head he would be better on the right cutting in

When Watford were promoted they lost to all the top teams but beat everyone else. That works in such a big league

tbf I thought Bacuna did really well today, DB
Fair enough. All about opinions. There were a number of times he cocked up easy plays.

cannot comment on today's performance but if he is going to experience any sort of redemption then I'd guess that playing RB is his best chance.
-
Some very good performances from players previously written off, Gestede played exactly the role we need, held the ball up, was a nuisance and took his goals very well. Bacuna was superb as was Cissokho. The front four were all very good, Ayew in patches looked unplayable and Grealish was class, Tshibola energetic but for me, MOM was Westwood, a very solid base from which we built effectively.
Some of the play was scintillating, a very enjoyable day and the score line flattered them.
A long time coming.
-
I hate the 'shit support' chant, I cringe every time.
It's the "empty seats" one that makes me laugh as the echo bounces of the Upper Trinity - no need for it...

With you most of the way there PW but thought Pointy went very quiet for long periods - he didn't do anything awful but just a bit anonymous.
The forward play by RossMac was very good - always looking to get others involved in and around the box - was half hoping for a flying overhead scissor-kick when we were queuing up to score in the second half, just need someone now who can pass into the channels for him. Not sure Cisshoko was "superb" but he looked a lot less troubled...

Just seen the highlights on the awful C5 Championship highlights programme - all 1 minute 15 seconds of them. Thank goodness they had Alan Curbishley and Gary Megson to provide some insightful analysis. Not

That's really dampened my spirits...it's now you realise how little coverage the Championship gets!? Guessing there's nowhere to get extended highlights then??
-
Westwood was anonymous today again. I'm not sure where we go with him once we sign a replacement.
-
He'll be sold to Burnley or once we have a replacement. My guess anyway.

One paper today had Burnley signing Steven Defour in midfield for £6m, so can't see Westwood going there if that happens.

I was looking forward to the highlights all night, I settled down, put my feet up and it was over before I blinked. What a joke!

Guess there'll be longer highlights on AVTV but not sure where else

Westwood was anonymous today again. I'm not sure where we go with him once we sign a replacement.
I thought he was very quiet first 15-20 minutes but was excellent afterwards. He kept the ball moving and didn't give it away cheaply.
Think the two centre backs will be a superb partnership, must be the best in the division by a country mile. I am not a massive fan of Ayew but thought he was excellent today and played as part of a team.
-
Westwood's a big bag of nothing, minus the bag.
-

Do you think he was poo today?
-
Westwood stood off in the first half and allowed the Rotherham midfield to dominate. It was very frustrating to watch. I know it's a cliche on here but he was doing a lot of pointing instead.

First 15-20 minutes I cant disagree but not afterwards IMO
-
It feels nice to win a game, it's been too long. The goal before half time was great because it meant they had to come out attack which helped us on the break. Only criticism is that we should have scored more than we did but let's hope this is the start of some much needed confidence rebuilding.

I thought Tshibola looked great today though. A real find hopefully.

Excellent might be a bit strong, but I thought he was fine today and did little wrong. I did notice, however, he was still second to a lot of balks in midfield and I do think we could do with a more physical presence in there.

Yes, good energy and great play for the first goal. Positioning will get better with experience

Tshibola has a physical presence and think he will improve with a few games behind him
-
Whilst Westwood is far from ideal, I think it would be a major mistake to let him go now. For me he offers far more than Gardener. Unless we're buying someone who is a clear improvement we need to keep him.
What I struggle to understand is the clamour for Traore.
-
I haven't read the previous posts but I thought Bacuna had a fine game. If he can keep that standard up then that's a problem solved. Westwood was steady, the sort of performance that impresses managers more than fans though. Huddersfield will give us a better idea of this league's standard.

Megson looks very miserable
-
I liked the look of Tshibola as well, in a few years he could be very good. As for Bacuna, right back looks his best position and he's miles better than Hutton there.
-
Wow great team performance from Doctor Tone down. Gollini is settling well. Captain Tom does what it says on the tin, what a composed leader he is. Chester looked comfortable and assured, after joining the club less than 24 hours ago! Both Bacuna and Cissoko gave competent performances. Midfield were more competitive today, Tish is getting better every match and Westwood was an important cog in the wheel, imo. Jack had one of his best VP performances capped off with a cracking solo effort. Ayew scared them to death, and me, as he always seems inches away from a sending off. RossMac is a real team player, very unselfish and on a number of occasions passed the ball to colleagues in a better position than going for glory himself. Rudy, for me, MOM. He scored two good totally different goals and help Jack get his. His alround performance today was excellent. Finally, I loved seeing the Chairman enjoying the performance as much as I did. UTV

I agree on both points. If we can get an upgrade on Westwood then let him go.
I'm not sure which I'd forgotten about most: winning or playing decent football. Probably the latter.
Admittedly Rotherham offered very little, but for a change we looked positive and a better unit. Hopefully the new centre back pairing will finally give us some solidity.
-
No match reports on Guardian or Independent, but I did manage to see the goals on Youtube- all 1m 20s of it anyway. In that brief snippet, one thing that was apparent was for both the Gestede goals, how fluent the team looked going forward. Should really have been 5-0 if the other gilt-edged chances had been put away.
Hopefully that win will go a long way to settling the players' nerves.
Good base to start from at home this season.
A couple more out and 1 or 2 more in and we may start to see a half-decent side emerge.
-
I enjoyed it. I can't remember the last time I posted that. And Traore will fucking murder this league if we keep him fit.
How did Adama get on?
Was only given/had the ball twice and first run barely got going and second one fizzled into nothing after about 30 yards and spent the rest of the game isolated out on the right with most of our play was down the left hand side. If we are to get the best out of him we need to plan properly on how to bring him into the game more when he is on the pitch.
-
From a Rotherham forum
That said when you look at the Holte end. How can their players have been so gutless and w@nk last season with that kind of support.
Also, they were very very loud.
That's all mate.
-
Westwood was top quality today, his passing was superb. I very much doubt he's going anywhere
-
Westwood was anonymous today again. I'm not sure where we go with him once we sign a replacement.
I am far from being a fan of Westwood, but today I though he did really well.
He kept things ticking over, made sure we kept possession and was very disciplined in what he did.
-
We were better, stronger than the opposition today in all departments. However we were very wasteful in and around goal. As we get better we will be more ruthless and assign teams to regular 4/5 to nil results. Lot of pleasing aspects today not least the weather. A superb day all around.
-

Exactly what I said, walking back to the car.
We need to be ruthless in front of goal. It is ridiculously early in the season, but goal difference could mean eveything later on.
Today, had we won 6-0 it would have been totally justified and sent out a message to the whole league.
Don't get me wrong though, I'll happily take 3-0.
-
I'd have taken 1-1 and that was when we were winning 2-0, that's how bad the last few years have been!
-
We're complaining that we only won 3-0. Never have I been so proud of you all. God bless Miserablism.
-
We're a team that could barely win a throw-in until today. Baby steps and all that.
Save the 6-0's for the Tatters and the Jawdies.

Sorry; couldn't resist the title edit.
Only a joke I know, but we shouldn't start patronising any clubs yet, theres an awfully long way to go.
I think Dave is pointing out the posts on here and elsewhere that state "I know it was only Rotherham but....", not having a pop at the club himself.
Either way, we are not in a position to call out clubs one way or the other.
Why, what harm would it do anyway?
Anyway I think it was aimed more at certain fans from the "lets not carried away" camp who might say "we only beat Rotherham you know".
I just find it a little condescending, we, according to most, have class.
No, it's a sense of superiority. We are Aston Villa. They aren't. I intend to spend the rest of the season looking at every other club in this division with a mixture of scorn, pity and, in the case of Only Newcastle United, amusement.
-
Missed this...went to Bloodstock. Ah well.
Looking forward to Huddersfield though, will be a tougher test after their win today at Newcastle.
Hopefully we can keep momentum up...back-to-back wins would be massive for us at this early stage.
-
I listened to it on the radio but having just seen the goals, what an excellent feeling when it finished.
When you see players doing acrobatics and running into the crowd, you know it's been a good day. That talk the Dr gave them certainly put a rocket up Gestede's arse, when have you ever said the words "Gestede could of had a hat-trick" before?
-
My 5-10 rating scale of players as a deserved win and excellent feeling still happy !!!
The only difference between a 9 and 10 is maybe a goal or assist so therefore 10’s do not get given out
A 6 is a good enough but could do better when he works at it with flaws so we say. Still, it’s a respectable rating. Anything under a 6 i dont like and i not happy with it means they need extra training, dropping and weve had enough 5 and below par performances.
So here are my results.
Aston Villa
Gollini 8 clean sheet
Bacuna like his number 7
Elphick 8 good leader
Chester 8 solid and prem class
Cissokho 8 very decent well done
J Ayew 7 as he got booked and also moaned coming off Substituted for Traoré 6
Westwood 6 just westood
Tshibola 8
Grealish 9 Booked at 84mins and Subs for Green for standing ovations
McCormack 7 sub Gardner 85'minutes
Gestede 9 as he scored 2 goals
no 5 or 6 no below par we must contuine this way .
overall 8
-
Only just got home, superb day.Elphick good leader, Chester looked like hed been with us years, Bacuna had a good game, Ayew looked a class above the defenders whenever he ran at or past them and Grealish was like Chris Waddle in his prime. Who'd have thought Gestade could finish like he did for no 2. Perfect day from start to finish including Dr Tones reception. Moor St was funny about 7 pm, platform was full of Villa fans and two Cro Magnon looking Blues fans started scowling at me. one said to the other "show your colours" and both took off their jackets to reveal their tops. Very intimidating not.
-
I thought Ayew played well. I thought he may have ended up being sent off after being booked so early (the ref was trigger happy today) but he got it together and looked quite dangerous. He'll be a real asset in this league.
-
Its nice to feel like a big team again.
Rotherham's manager's comments particularly brought this home:
"We are up against a team that has significantly more resources than us. They have just paid a record amount of money for one of their strikers (Ross McCormack), we have to be realistic.
"We are not going to get downbeat. We won't be the last team to come here and get beat."
Lets bring the pride back.

Blimey when did he time to watch the game!! Very nice pics though. Good to see the Holte looking that full. Get the results our fans will flood back.
-
After the Luton game i didn't think we'd see Gestede play for us again. 2 goals today and he actually moved to get them. I'm pleasantly suprised.
-
Team chemistry is so important and we need a settled group over a decent period of time. You saw what that means for a side like Sheff Wed last week. This side/squad will come together over the next few weeks and months. But we saw glimpses of what it could be today like the little pass from Ross to Rudy for the second. Looking forward to lots more of that.

I thought we saw a spine of a team emerging today. We are far from the finished product, but the pieces are starting to come together.
-
Generally we were just too good for Rotherham and even I had no panicky moments.
Like some posters above, I thought Westwood played well - good ball retention and vision. His weakness, as we all know, is the defensive side of the game. I also thought Bacuna had a good game - he seemed too athletic for Thier left sided players. Obvious hats off to Rudy for looking like a man who can play with his feet today.
A couple of random points: Gollini didn't look too comfortable coming for the ball. And why didn't the big screen show the action for long chunks of play?
Oh yeah, one final thing. After the game I saw the stall selling scarves etc opposite the North Stand on Witton Lane and they had pink ( genuinely Hello Kitty pink, not a weird version of claret) and white Villa scarves. Eh???
-
The club shop normally sells pink and white stuff in the women's section.
-

If I drink a bottle of vodka and squint I get that. But a bar scarf is surely only to be claret and blue?
-
Pretty sure i've seen proper light pink and white hats and scarves in the past in the club shop most years going back yonks.
-
A quick Google found this, you can tell it's going back a bit because of the badge.

Does my missus wash you clothes too?
I have some beautiful old Fred Perrys only Percy would wear now.
Saying that, only a real man can wear pink so I guess they're no use to Percy.

Just saw the goals (christ I hate the lack of coverage in this league).
Second two were lovely .

Brief (and I mean brief) highlights here for those of us outside the UK: https://youtu.be/2jeenSPnhYs
-
I think that deserves it's own thread. How can you love a team when you can't see them?
Thanks to Villa Worldwide I got to see some of the game but I can't rely on that for the season. I may as well go and find a new hobby to occupy my Saturday afternoons.
One thing I do know is that a big part of the selling value of the PL is full stadiums, no matter how small you are. It doesn't happen anywhere else in the world and it's about time the PL and the rights owners realised you've got to have a healthy body, not just the heart, to survive.
Something I noticed from the Facebook live streams today is what a global club Villa are, fans from every corner of the world. What happens when they can no longer see the games?
Food for thought..
-
3 of our first 5 games will have been on live streams, it's not like we've vanished. By the end of the season I reckon 15-20 of our games will have been live. We managed to cope back in the day when teletext and the videprinter were the only way to know the the full time result as it happened if you weren't at the game, i'm sure folks can survive half our games not being live.
-
Back then we had radio, today was real tough.
Right now I'm still basking in a Villa victory but it would have been beautiful to share.
-
Radio was nearly always only goal alerts though, so you find out as fast, if not faster, now with the internet. Bit different to watching teletext and waiting for the page with our game on to appear every few mins, or standing in the rain outside Radio Rentals at 4.45pm.
-
Standing outside Radio rentals in the rain.. we have exactly the same thing here now but they do it in air conditioned shopping centres.
-

not if you live in Australia you can't. Saw the goals on YouTube though

Is there a link somewhere showing which games will be televised, at least somewhere in the world? Want to know which games I should bother getting up for.
-
Derby next week is live, Newcastle, Forest, Wolves, Brighton and sha games are as well. If you look at our fixtures you can work most out, any Sat 3pm game won't have a stream. And keep an eye on the 'Games Moved for TV' thread on here as each time they decide live games it will be added to.
-
Let's just say it was a bit of a contrast to our first home game the last time we were at this level, in 1987/88.
-
Any chance of a link to 3rd goal for us in far flung territories?
do what I did Neil. Google Hola VPN and add the extension to Google Chrome. Then go the Sky Sports link above and when you are told not allowed to watch there will be a little Hola icon in the top right and unblock UK. It shows the highlights after that.
Thanks Toronto

I like that it says "Highlights of Aston Villa's 3-0 win over Rotherham" and it is basically a montage of Villa. There is nothing of Rotherham in it.
Also, (admittedly, it's only brief) but the difference in quality really shows - Villa look like they're enjoying themselves.

I thought their fans would be right up for it yesterday. Coming to a massive club and amazing ground. How wrong could I have been? Never heard a peep from them.
My only negative from yesterday was seeing the Trinity top tier empty. I know the arguments for and against it been closed but it did look weird. Looks as if lots have relocated to the Witton lane.
All in all a top day. I can't remember the last time coming away from a game feeling that way. More of the same please.
-
Well I woke at 5 this morning and it dawned on me I had 1/2 to get to work. I was still too pissed to drive so on the walk to work I slowly pieced together the reason I was in such a state. Aston Villa was the answer. So any golfer that is on a green today and thinks that it has been cut by Stevie wonder must realise that if Villa continue to play like that then they need to find a new golf club as I intend to celebrate every Villa win with gusto....3-0......what a feeling. !

statistics say, that lot had one shot on target, I cant remember it! whereas AVFC worked hard and as the realisation sunk in that !hey were on top" the class started to show. There was only one real team on the pitch yesterday , so I totally understand the montage of Villa as you say.
of them Roterdam or whatever they were called all I noticed was there number 17 was getting ripped apart by the boy Jack, and so resorted to fouling,(btw thought Jack handled that well)
Thought the Referee was very good , something I haven't said for years.
my motm- Jordan Ayew worked really hard provided a lot of support down the right, of course Ruddie sent a message , with 2 goals.

Its was just great to see a win and no goals conceded. The smiles on peoples faces leaving the ground said it all. Very heartened with the crowd and to see people haven't given up on the Villa just because we aren't in the Premiership. I spoke to a number of exiled Villa fans on the way back yesterday at services on the M5 who like me travel a long way just for a home game. It seems that seeing a Villa win is all that matters.

My only negative from yesterday was seeing the Trinity top tier empty. I know the arguments for and against it been closed but it did look weird. Looks as if lots have relocated to the Witton lane.
All in all a top day. I can't remember the last time coming away from a game feeling that way. More of the same please.
I thought the top tier of the Trinity being closed added to the atmosphere a bit, it made the rest of the ground look fuller.
-
Same here, I thought it works well and the middle, my, tier was very full.
They have made a lot of the turnstile operators redundant, hopefully we will need them back soon.
-
Last win I saw was Blues cup game so was delighted to come out of the ground feeling happy again. Everyone put in a shift although Rotherham were little threat. Ref was overly fussy with his yellow cards. Good to see the post match togetherness amongst the players, even our old friend Micah looked chuffed !
-
I reckon we'd have probably sold up the Upper Trinity if it had been opened. The only real empty patches of seats were in the away end.
-
Plenty of seats in upper North as well.
-
Talking about the Trinity top tier, I overheard someone saying yesterday that as the club have decided to close it, it means that it can't be used at anytime this season, even against Blues?
Is that correct? I thought that we still had the option of using it on a one off basis
-
Can't see that being the case, we will have a license for its use.
-
I suppose it depends on whether they included it in the safety certificate application, and whether we have the staff to man it.
-
Thought Chester and Elphick looked steady, Bacuna had a good game at right back, wasn't tested defensively but offered a lot going forward. Gealish and Ayew out wide had the beating of them, especially Grealish who got in to a lot of dangerous positions, very good on the ball in areas that matter, should have scored another, McCormack is a very clever player, linked up play up front really well and offered great movement. Gestede, well what can I say, worked the line well, won a lot of headers and knockdowns and actually directed them and cracking little dink for his second. Tshbola put himself about a bit, thought Westwood was a bit missing though.
The atmosphere was fantastic, it didn't matter who we were playing in what division at the end of it all it's still just watching the Villa and that's how it felt, loved yesterday, hopefully there's many more of these weekends.
-
if with the upper Trinity open the ground holds just over 42k and the upper trinity holds 6k, then there were around three thousand empty seats yesterday
before yesterdays game yesterday the Villa were predicting 27k for Tuesday, but with a favourable result a crowd more in the region of yesterdays, so whilst its a bit of a disapointment the upper trinity is closed , it does help with atmosphere, giving the impression of a more fuller ground.
btw if we can gain momentum then Trinity A will have to be opened.
heres to bums in seats in the Trinity A

As someone pointed out earlier, is he now directing them or dowe just have someone with a footballing brain who can read them sooner and gets on the end of them?

Good point, the front 4 actually played like they knew each other and hadn't been dragged in off the street 10 minutes beforehand, the one touch passing between each other was the first time I've consistently seen us do that for a number of years, particularly McCormack who looks top notch at this level. Movement as well, bloody movement, I saw our players moving in to space.
-
I quite liked the run out music as well, it sounded good. It was way better than those bloody wailing opera singers.

Fanfare for the Common Man by ELP. A prog classic.
-
Fanfare for the Common Man wasn't it?
-
Yes, it was. I couldn't place it at the time though.
-
They could have chosen something by ELO though, keep the Brum link going.
-

I thought it sounded like a crap 80s sports tv programme theme tune.
-
Fanfare for the Common Man composed by Aaron Copland as part of the ballet Billy the Kid (born in Peckham, probably a Millwall supporter).
-
Carl Palmer is from Birmingham so a small connection
-
Still think we should run out to Message To Rudy.
-
Tommy for me. The Opera version.

I think we had the 3rd highest crowd of the day after Man City and Everton.

hi ho silver lining for me
the crowd belting it out and half the teams in the league will shit it before a ball is kicked

-
It pains me to say it but 52,000 in the second tier is pretty incredible.
-
A couple of random points: Gollini didn't look too comfortable coming for the ball. And why didn't the big screen show the action for long chunks of play?
Yes that was my first impression of Gollini as well. A bit too static and and looked a little subdued. They put over some floated corners that he could have easily grabbed and everything catchable that he went for was punched away. May be it's the Italian style ie let defenders deal with high balls and punch instead of catching?
-
Fair play to all the players yesterday. Everyone performed well, and to the four i rarely rate Bacuna, Cissokho, Gestede and Westwood keep that up and all will be forgiven
Comical moment of the day, Ayew's incredibly slow walk off when subbed. God someone give that man a hug and tell him he's loved. Looked so depressed
-
It pains me to say it but 52,000 in the second tier is pretty incredible.
Listen one city club and there really is not much else to do up there!
But TBH I agree.

Yup

I thought the top tier of the Trinity being closed added to the atmosphere a bit, it made the rest of the ground look fuller.
I am not sure of top Trinity tier capacity number but if it's 7/8 thousand then yes the ground was full except for away supporters almost empty bottom tier. I noticed that Corporate's have disappeared very quickly...Fuck em!
-
I've suggested to the Dr on twitter that they ought to lay some of the massive flags over the empty seats in the upper Trinity. Either that or lay out some placards on the seats or something spelling out VILLA or whatever

Yeah I noticed that as well. Was sat in North Stand Lower, so not sure if that stand was full, but the only sparse areas I could see were the top tier and the corporate area of the Trinity Road, and the bottom tier of the away end. The rest of the ground looked pretty full, especially the Holte.
-
It was only Rotherham and a Premier League team would have torn us apart in the second half when we let them play. Having said that, Grealish and Ayew are too good for this league and Toshiba? looks good. Seems to have a brain, unlike Westwood.
-

Good suggestion that!
-
i heard people saying ayew was brilliant and a class above - the commentators said he was controlling the game
Other fans and media said Rudy was MOTM and was immense and too hard to handle
and other supporters and pundits said Grealish was class and the main man
This is a good sign
-
Only just got home, superb day.Elphick good leader, Chester looked like hed been with us years, Bacuna had a good game, Ayew looked a class above the defenders whenever he ran at or past them and Grealish was like Chris Waddle in his prime.
I heard two noses talking about us outside the pub in Digbeth. "Anyone would think they'd won the European Cup" said one to the other. I just leaned in between them and said "Again?"
-
enjoyed yesterday nice to see some goals and a comfortable win
rotherham tried but never looked like troubling us and will be in the mix to go down
the formation at times was 4 2 4 and personally i thougght ayew was wasted a lot of the time
three big games coming up, pick up at least 6 points and then forest and the barcodes at home. if we are around the top four after that i think we will be sorted
-

It is - when they got relegated last time they took 6000 to Cov
-
Upper trinity is about 3500?
-
The highlights were fucking shite. An hour long programme and we get about thirty seconds? Why don't they just get rid of the studio garbage and spend the hour showing football highlights?

Its a good job we're not in the premier league then isn't it ?
Heard a few folks saying 'it was only Rotherham on the way out yesterday. NEWSFLASH You're going to have a fucking long depressing season if after every match you say 'it was only' ... These are our oponents now, beating them is as important or vital as beating Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea or whoever in the past
Best get used to it and if at all possible ENJOY it.

Yes, I like that half of the Holte End.
-
Does my missus wash you clothes too?
I have some beautiful old Fred Perrys only Percy would wear now.
Saying that, only a real man can wear pink so I guess they're no use to Percy.
I had a beautiful pink button-down a matter of hours after a certain Jam picture sleeve came out. Think it was All Around The World.

Of course not - they are taking pictures of a majestic football ground, one of the finest anywhere.
Wembley is a giant sports stadium - something different

Looking at the link, he seems to have taken loads of pictures of lots of different grounds. He's obviously got a passion for the subject, fair play to him.
-
I don't mind the channel 5 coverage tbh, although the camera work isn't great at least you get to see all the goals from the teams we will be playing this season. Are the pundits really much more rubbish than those on the BBC?
I used to watch it anyway before Villas fall from grace (like to keep an eye on the lower league players), so at least I don't now have to watch MOD as well.
-
I don't rate the studio coverage on MOTD either. However, it is more justified when you have a ninety minute programme devoted to seven or eight Premier League games. The Channel Five coverage is about fifty minutes long when you take out adverts and has ten-twelve matches to show. There is simply no room for loads of chat. They couldn't even be arsed to show the whole move for our second goal yesterday.
-
The highlights Channel 5 showed were exactly what was on that Sky Sports link someone posted on here yesterday and that lasted for 1.28 seconds.
-

It was like they'd got some bumbling oaf off the street

I thought Curbs was ok but Megson appeared to be asleep. The presenter had unnecessary amount of cake decoration on her face.
-
I enjoyed that!
Generally, thought the whole team played well, a pity we couldn't have finished a bit better and got the 5 or 6 the performance and chances should have delivered.
Gollini very confident, Bacuna much better at RB, CBs solid, Cissokho positive - great shot early on and a great cross for 1st goal. Tshibola contributed well, Westwood looked much better, Grealish caused them problems and scored a brilliant goal...eventually! Gestede looked sharp 1st half, faded in 2nd, McCormack is a player and will improve, Ayew's skill delightful to watch at times. Great to keep a clean sheet.
Surprised to see Gardner on as sub...he's been consistently poor.
Adama...was he taking the possible order "play wide" a little too literally? When we approached their goal from the left he made no attempt to get into a position of advantage...I'd like to see him played down the middle and chase balls lobbed over the top of a few cumbersome central defenders!
Same result on Tuesday please!

Yes, I like that half of the Holte End.
Joe C and I sit at the top of the exit on the extreme right. Amfy and Jane beneath it.

I'm directly below the Union Jack on the far right as you look at it. (But Left Side really).
-
I think this low level "adulation" should be mandatory for any Villa player scoring two in a match.
Forgot to add in earlier posts, but I've noticed over the last two games that Gestede is a real presence when defending set pieces. He really attacks the ball and got his head on to quite a few opposition corners yesterday.
-
Not sure if its been mentioned yet but Tshibola did great in the first goal.
-
Just got back to Essex after staying over in Brum superb win lads the confidence in the players was so good to see bacuna cissokho looked so much better
The drive back felt so good even the m25 seemed like a country lane when you have played well and got 3 points
-
Interesting that the entry music was chosen by the team.
-
Fantastic afternoon and who would have thought that Rudy would celebrate with that somersault! He could easily have had a ht-trick.
Atmosphere in the Holte was fantastic.
I think Chester and Elphick will make a great partnership, Jack looks to have knuckled down capped by a very well taken goal and McCormack and Ayew looked a class above.
Even the hour and 20 minutes it took to get from Lichfield Road to Great Barr couldn't spoil it. Bring on Huddersfield, we have no reason to fear anyone in that division.
-
Interesting that the entry music was chosen by the team.
Really think that needs a look at. I think effort is needed to try and build the atmosphere before kick off in general.

I don't think it matters a jot. In fact I think music of any kind played at a football ground is unwelcome. We should (and would) generate our own atmosphere.

The music at Sheff Wednesday last week was so feckin' loud you couldn't help but squint!
If we're gonna have music let it have a touch of class about it. Saturday's was ok.

Thanks Exeter, CJ. A real blast from the past, so if that's what gets them going, bring on the 70's rock!

Extended highlights are on AVTV (although god knows why they cant just put the full matches up).
10 mins or so. I have to say it was a pleasure to watch that.
-
ACDC pre kick off was way too loud, I was glad when that one ended.
-
OT, I know, but somewhat fitting nevertheless:
In the heydays of the original ELP, my music teacher at the Uni (who was working in a secondary level school at the time) told his class of very bored 16-year-olds that he had brought the very latest ELP album, not yet released in Norway, from London. With the class suddenly expressing an interest way beyond the normal level, he proceeded to put Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor on the turntable, and turned the volume up.
They all sat there, entranced by the music, waiting for several minutes for Greg Lake and Carl Palmer to join in...
-
ACDC pre kick off was way too loud, I was glad when that one ended.
Absolute tosh!
YOU CANT PLAY AC/DC TO LOUD............
whole lotta rosie fuckin love it.
sorry i'll came down now
-
It may well have only been Rotherham but for the past five years it's only been Aston Villa, so it was nice to dominate a game and brush inferior opposition aside while spending most of the game in 2nd gear. Even then we could have scored 6.
McCormack is a very smart player and some of the one touch pass and move was great to see.
We looked a lot fitter than them and towards the end the visibly tired and the gaps got bigger.
Ayew murdered his full back, we got good crosses into the box. Jack was a menace and Rudy should have had a hatrick.
Back four looked comfortable but they were not troubled. Chester had too much pace and Elphick won everything.

I hope it was the 9 minute 42 second version. Things really are looking up at Villa Park.
-
Among many things to be happy about yesterday it was great to see our warm up routine being taken so seriously and professionally. How many times have you seen our players doing the warm up like it was a boring irrelevance. They were being drilled forcefully by the man I take to be the Sheikh of Muscles.

I hope it was the 9 minute 42 second version. Things really are looking up at Villa Park.
Punk as we all know now is merely a footnote in music history.

From the Sheffield Star;
With its ornate facade, imposing brick-built stands and sheer scale, Villa Park is a truly special venue, managing to combine tradition and modern in a seamless, iconic way. The place has class.

First game I've been to for a few years and definitely the first time I've seen us play in Division 2!
Great to see us actually win, score 3 goals AND keep a clean sheet!
Good atmosphere, especially where I was sitting in the lower holte.
What is the chant for Di Matteo? I couldn't quite make out what people were singing.
-
Dr Tony went to Rome in a Ford Mondeo, brought us back a manager Robert di Matteo.

Their brilliant fans at an imposing Villa Park – surely one of the best grounds in the country – will also play a vital role. A quick return to the top tier beckons.
-
I think I could get used to this lovebombing.
-
Makes you wonder what compliments we would get if the ground enlargement had been done with the architectural and conservation skill it merited.
-
ACDC pre kick off was way too loud, I was glad when that one ended.

All I want to hear now is how we play shexsy football.
enjoyed reading that, thank you, Dave.

I have nothing against ACDC, it was just at an uncomfortable volume where I was sat in the Upper North, absolutely deafening it was.

Ditto
Nice to see our fans receiving some plaudits as well. Atmosphere was great yesterday

Ayew murdered his full back
It's been a few years since an opposition player has been subbed in the footballing equivalent of his corner throwing in the towel!!
-
Get in there Villa

Good to see a win.
Good to see that some of the players (Westwood, Grealish and Gestede) who have taken a lot of criticism in past couple of years standing out.
Bit concerned about the quality of the back 4 with the ball.
I can't remember the exact quote but SGT once said something about defending not being about winning the ball but what you do with it with your first touch afterwards - in this regard we placed far too many misplaced passes which better team will punish (see Wednesday last week).
On the two league games, I 'd say the attacking options are OK.
Unsure about central midfield (Westwood looked far better than Tishbola).
Full back definitely need sorting.

First few times I heard that I thought they were shouting "WANKERS, WANKERS." I prefer my version.

A good performance by us long may it continue.
