Title: the o'neill legacy
Post by: trevor fisher on August 09, 2016, 09:07:05 PM
It just occurred to me that it is exactly six years since Martin O'Neill resigned - August 9th 2010. And in that six years we have staggered from one crisis to another. Was it O'Neill's going that put us on the downward path or was it impossible for anyone to work with Lerner? Its worth thinking what O'Neill's legacy was. Did he over achieve with a set up that could not ever work because of the owner, or saddle us with a legacy that none of the managers that followed could overcome? We certainly never recovered from his quitting, and ROberto now has a house that has to be demolished and rebuilt. Is this O'Neill's fault or what?

I don't think he did anything wrong at all. Even the timing of his leaving was surely designed as a very loud wake up call to Mr. Lerner. Although, come to think of it, Randy himself did a fantastic job too, so you have to wonder what all the recent fuss has been about.
If O'Neill had a fault, it was generosity: giving all those young and untried players their big chance in Europe; fixing it for Mrs. Heskey's little boy to get to play with a real professional football team; all those really quite high fees and wages for - some might say - mediocre players. Yes, he was Villa's Willy Wonka was Martin and, let's not forget - he never relegated us! Not once!

I am in holiday in Barcelona. Just cam home from a lovely dinner to be met with this thread. God give me strength. O neill is gone. Whatever legacy he had does not reach 6 years down the road. We were relegated 4 years after Ron Suanders left. Was that his fault? Move on

I also don't think he did anything wrong at all. For somebody that knew fuck all about football, he took his opportunity. Money in the bank.

I do occasionally wonder though what would have happened with Lerner's money if we'd got a half decent manager.

I was hoping that the human brain, like the liver can repair itself.  Some of the damage inflicted by the raking over of O'Neill history seemed to be healing with the throughput of equally calamitous management but, just like a tired old spook on a ghost train ride here he is again.  Whistling grandad Simpson and leering MM are very therapeutic though.

For anyone still suffering from PTSD/MON syndrome let's hope these threads are like therapy.

I think the Mick McCarthy gif is unparalleled - no doubt rolled out again when we play Ipswich.
The other one that still cracks me up is the Hitler-in-the-bunker rage after the Blose game a few years' ago; helpless laughter ...

MON's only legacy is that ridiculous song our fans sing to the manager to "give us a wave". Fcuk me, it's embarrassing.

The first "give us a wave" song I can remember was sung to SGT. As for MON the timing was unfortunate but he can't be blamed for the poor managerial appointments and player signings in the last six years that have got us relegated. Although I do suspect Randy Lerner felt let down by him and that maybe started his disenchantment with Villa and football in general.

yes I agree with andy lochhead in the air that the problems go much deeper than MON. The groundhog day goes back to Saunders though its unfair to blame the manager. Relations between manager and owner or chair are fragile at best and keep breaking down, right back to Saunders and his walk out. Which was not something that has ever been explained, and the argument was with the now forgotten Ron Bendall. Then Doug Ellis came back and the managerial roundabout started again.

The current owner is much more hands on than Lerner was, so Roberto must be aware that he has less elbow room than O'Neill. If there is a lesson from O'Neill walking out and its still not fully explained - like Saunders walking out - it is that what happens in the boardroom is the key to what a club does, and the media hardly ever report what is going on
