7:45 on Wednesday. No rest for the wicked. Games will come thick and fast this season.
I'd play Ross to give him game time fitness. I imagine Bunn, Bennett, Green, Tshbola and the Russian will probably be in contention for a start too.
-
It's 'Aston' Villa.
-
Play Agbunalhore
-
I wouldn't rest many. We need a win. It's very early in the season so the players need minutes
Gollini - Hutton elphick baker Bennett / Amavi - bacuna Westwood Tish grealish - McCormack ayew
-
I'd like to see Amavi, Tshibola, Green, Traore and McCormack all get starts.
-

this...
-
If he pays a very weakened team, it could well be a sign to Dr. X.
-
Doubt Traore will be fit enough.
-
I think people need to forget about Traore. It's never going to happen, even when he plays he mostly does fuck all. Two noteable runs down the wing does not excuse a terrible fitness record and an inability to work back or pass a ball ten yards.
-
I imagine RDM will make a couple of changes, but if we can pick up where we left off in the 2nd half today I see that important morale boosting first competitive win and hopefully we can take that into the 2 upcoming home league games.
-
If we are allowed fantasy picks, I want Kozak..!
-
I'd like to see Amavi, Tshibola, Green, Traore and McCormack all get starts.
I doubt McCormack will play. He felt his hamstring today and he'll give JackieBoy a full run instead.
-
Ross seemed to tweek something stretching for the shot after JustHead's knock down.
-
On 70th minute I looked at my mates and said were going to win the league. I'm placing a bet tomorrow
Whoops wrong thread
-
Too many changes and we are out. Feeling worried.
-
We've never lost in the first round of the LC, that won't change. 3-1 to us.
-
I can see us getting a 2-1 win.
-
0-3
-
We'll win 2-0 and hopefully go on a bit of a run.
-
What, no poll? Villa win after a squeaky start
-
Luton have quite a good record against bigger teams in cups. Really hope we don't slip up as it'll take me back to years of teasing in the 80s.
-
a few happy memories of us playing Luton at Kenilworth Road as I lived nearby for a few years as a kid. Having said that, my dad was distinctly unimpressed with me saying I thought the ground was as good as Villa Park - to a six year old everything like that looked huge! A narrow transitional side win for us.
-
It boggles the mind how clubs in the 3rd and 4th Division can manage to play:
league fixtures
FA Cup fixtures
league cup fixtures
league trophy fixtures
(+ replays where still applicable)
In Villa's case we have to be asking "To what extent will 2 cup runs be good without damaging league form?"
-
well, we haven't got any league form at the minute, so I guess the answer is none.

And think how they do it at non league level. As an example Bromsgrove were in 5 cup competitions last season, that's players that have full time jobs and don't get paid for playing.

Luke Dugmore broke a leg yesterday so will be out for a while. Also Ryan Spink tore his ACL in the week .....both going to be out for a long time. Chatting to Ryan saturday night to
say gutted is an understatement.

Yes. I thought so too. He continued for a minute or two so hopefully not serious but I'd be surprised if he plays on Wednesday.

Thought i was in non-league thread!!!! Apologies
-
Need to win this game. It's important we build on yesterday's second half.
-
I'm putting this here because if I leave it until the next pre match thread it will be too late - I have my season ticket for Rotherham available free to anyone who wants it. Send me PM? Post from our village is shit so if anyone wants it send me address details asap. The ticket is a paper ticket separate from my season ticket Holt End Lower

Top man Mr Underhill

Luton can burn in the fires of hell. This is all I wish to add.

A nervous 2-1 win.

Ever been to Dunstable ? Least Luton has a train line to London !!

I thought it was Tuesday?
-
I thought it was Tuesday?
Weds because we're on the telly.
-
Well, me, I see this as a free throw, fuck the league cup. promotion is everything! I do agree with the building of momentum, but the cups are a distraction, to the end justifies the means motif that I am championing.
Wednesday , pick who you like, treat it like a friendly, work on set pieces, play the players you haven't played yet, play the new players, play your mom, I don't give a fook.
PROMOTION IS EVERYTHING!!
-
Nah.
Every time we've been promoted, we've knocked out at least one top flight club from one or both cups. In 1975 we got promoted and won the League Cup. It's not vet likely but I don't think a club of our stature should ever give up on the idea of winning a trophy.
In any case, a win, any win, is vital to confidence. We need to get in the habit of winning games.
-
I would make quite a few changes. We have a decent size squad it would be good to give some of the others a run out. At this stage of the season I'm not too bothered about a cup run. Yeah it will build confidence, but until we get our feet under the table in the Championship and see how we will be doing then I think a cup run could be a distraction. At least there's no replay adding to the long list of fixtures.
A narrow 1-2 to us. Gabby with maybe his last ever Villa goal and Kozak.
-
Would change the whole team to be honest bar Gollini and Elphick. Amavi, Okore, Grealish, Green, RHM, Tshibola, Lyden, Kozak/Traore (if either are even fit?), maybe give Gardner another game in the middle.
-
I thought it was Tuesday?
Weds because we're on the telly.
And because Villa only played on Sunday ?
-
The new Forest manager is targeting this competition as a route into Europe ???
-
The New Forest manager isn't pulling up any trees.
-
Have Luton still got that centre-back who is grey-haired and really fat?
-

No, I stopped playing some time ago

::)
-
Have Luton still got that centre-back who is grey-haired and really fat?
Looked him up; Steve McNulty. He now plays for Tranmere Rovers and whilst he looks like a 45 year old pub player, I notice he's actually younger than I am.
-
Shame McNulty may have made Justhead look mobile.

So he's "not in the game, yo"

We need a win. There are no circumstances where losing to Luton is a positive. We need to get out of this unbelievable habit of losing games and become habitual winners.
-

I totally agree. I accept that two long cup runs in two competitions we are unlikely to win may add to the difficulty of trying to get out of a tough league with a tough fixture schedule but we need the winning mentality. Obviously 1980/1981 was an exception but we only took two early cup exits as a positive after the event. It is easy to be rational when you have won the league. I doubt if some Leicester fans can even remember who they lost to in the cups last season and they probably don't care. But you hit the nail on the head when you say we need a winning habit. I remember beating Spurs in the league cup in SGT's promotion season and it gave us a morale boost.
-
to see the other side of this situation, yes we must beat Luton, because otherwise we will be on a right downer, and that will disrupt my scenario of PROMOTION IS EVERYTHING!
so just this once mind,
Lets do the little shits
-
We've lost -what is it? - 13 of the last 14 competitive matches. We haven't won a competitive fixture since February. We simply have to stop losing as something somehow normal and inevitable and routine. This game matters. We have to recover a winning mentality and Luton away is a good place to start. It will set us up for a winnable double header of home games v Rotherham and Huddersfield.

See, I cant look at the name McNulty without thinking of Graham.

we always seemed to beat Spurs back then Damo.
-
I think after tonight we'll be left to 'concentrate on the league'.
-
I'm also viewing this with trepidation. It's Kenilworth Road ... Two words that traumatise any Villa fan over a certain age. Is the pitch still plastic?
-
Its a long season and weve a lot of games to play. Id sacrifice this game for a promotion push any day of the week.
-
Looks like Sheffield Wednesday were not such a shit hot proposition after all....beaten by the mighty Cambridge United last night!!

They started 11 different players last night.

Apparently they now have a grass pitch and they actually allow away fans in. Crazy ideas like that will never catch on. Surely plastic pitches and away fan bans are the future of football.
-
I'd love Villa to win some games of football again.
-

Yep, can't remember who we last beat, was it when the goalie threw the ball in for us?
-
Pete,
I'm very tongue-in-cheek with my comments. I remember back to when we were relegated to the third tier and, how great it was to climb back up to the then first division.
Obviously, I'd like to see us go straight back up but, regardless of the division, as long as the club and players look like they are making an effort, I'll be there!!
-
Norwich 6th Feb. It's why I don't get people being fine with us losing tonight. To a 4th division team. We have to start to winning games to get confidence going and tonight is no different even if some do think it's 'only' the League Cup.

Agree completely. We need to create a winning mentality.

Careful PWS you don't want to use factual evidence against idle Villa bashing.
-
I've just read that apparently, we have lost 8 of 11 competitive visits to Kenilworth Road; now that's not a good record, and cups have a funny way of upholding tradition when it comes to so called lesser teams playing bigger clubs and the like.
A worrying stat I would say. Still, things have to change for us at some point!
-
Twat these tonight, twat Rotherham Saturday, get a head of steam going, sign some new players, twat the division the rest of the season. 2 tickets for £25 in the Lower Holte I just got for Saturday, well chuffed.

I don't either, we have got to get used to playing midweek games and apart from one or two tweaks, we should be fielding a close to full strength team tonight. We need to build some continuity.
-
Crush our enemies underfoot and rejoice in the lamentations of their fans...
Don't hold with this "strategic losing" lark - what would Sir Ron say?
-
I want to see a full strength side getting a cricket score and going into our next league games with their heads up. We need to build confidence and remember what it is like to win games.

Not a great deal when we lost at Cambridge in 1980. He had his priorities.

What about 1974/75 when were in division 2 under him?

Different world. I can't remember the exact words until I can check them, but after the Cambridge and Ipswich cup defeats he was a lot less unhappy than after we'd lost in the league.

Don't forget Throwback Phil, the bellend.

It was a poor attempt at a joke as obviously we won it and got promoted that year.

I don't think any manager sends a team out to lose but some games are more important than others. He was just doing it a decade before anyone else.
-
now its the day, I JUST WANT A MASSIVE WIN
LOVE THE VILLA
-
We haven't won a competitive game in six months. I'll take a win.
-
I can kind of understand why some fans wouldn't be too gutted if we went out tonight bearing in mind the season's main aim.
-
We need to find out what a win is, and this would be a great opportunity to do that. I don't think I'll happen, though. Scrappy draw.

And the replay?
-
Extra time and penalties?
-
I hope it's a strong team put out tonight and they win because we need to get the winning feeling back ASAP.
-
Extra time and penalties?
Yep. Not that we'll need it as we will win in 90 mins.
-
Read somewhere today that tonights visit to Luton is our 16th....we have lost 8 of the last 11 apparently. Looked it up myself our:
Record away
P16 W1 D3 L12 F8 A24
So yes please make in No.2 tonight.
-
Been told that this is the team for tonight
Bunn, richards, okore, baker, amavi, tshbola, Gardner, green, McCormack, grealish, ayew
-

yes Clampness, the end justifies the means, PROMOTION IS EVERYTHING!!
But were playing some shit box team from nowhere and TONIGHT (now its here, I WANT A WIN)
LOVE THE VILLA
-
Whoever RDM decides to play tonight, 1st eleven, 2nd eleven, a mixture with a couple of youngsters, If we don't destroy a 4th division side, its a fkn disgrace, highlighting how far we have fallen.
I'm going for a 4-0 to us, bet placed!
-
A win will give them confidence and hopefully take that into the league. A loss will fray already fragile confidence. Its early into the season so put out a strong side and hopefully get a cricket score.
-
Extra time and penalties? Defeat then.
-

That's our league record there.
We've won there twice. 1964 LC 1-0 and 1989 in the league, also 1-0. Other cup results there are a draw in the FAC and a defeat in the LC. It really is a piss poor record we have there.
-
Been told that this is the team for tonight

If so, apart from keeper and not having Elphick, it's a better team than Sunday in my opinion.

Expected Elphick to be out with a sore head (having seen the photos of Fletcher's injury) which is a shame as I'd like to have seen Okore given a go at right back. Shame Richards is back but hopefully a few scouts will be there to watch him. The rest of the team looks fine and should be more than enough to get the job done.

Hope so. That's an attacking line up.

I hope we put a good team out as Luton are majestical in being a shower of ******.
-
We cant even use the excuse of just having to turn up, we have to win THIS game, without a shadow of a doubt.

Be interesting to see how the back 4 play, swap Baker for Elphick and I would say that is our strongest defence on paper at least.
Richards is a decent player at right back, if he can just concentrate on his game. Hoping Amavi is ready to get back to his best.
Looking forward to a win
