Title: Andy Gray picture
Post by: Ron Manager on May 18, 2016, 04:58:07 PM
There is a picture of Andy Gray heading a magnificently brave goal against Ipswich. He arrives over George Burley It was either in the 5-2 win in 1976 in which he got a hat trick or the 1978 6-1 win . I thought it was in the following programme but I cannot trace it. Anybody help on this one?

First hatrick for the Villa.  What a start we had to that season - West Ham 4-1 (or was it 4-0) and we beat them in the cup as well.  Even beat Man City in the cup a week after Beirut at Maine Road.

Andy was as photogenic as the Elephant Man , but as a footballer he had that knack  being a great subject for an action photograph.I know its not the same , but I think Thomas Hauser said ,Ali had a unique quality of never being in a bad photo.

First hatrick for the Villa.  What a start we had to that season - West Ham 4-1 (or was it 4-0) and we beat them in the cup as well.  Even beat Man City in the cup a week after Beirut at Maine Road.

We beat West Ham 4-1 on Boxing Day 1975 (1975-76 season) and then we beat them 4-0 on the first day of the 1976-77 season, as well as beating them 3-0 in the FA Cup the following January.

I seem to remember we beat Manchester City 3-0 (think Brian Little got all 3 - he certainly scored 2 outstanding goals, one where he turned a defender and left him standing before scoring and another was a sort of overhead kick) at Villa Park in an early round of the League Cup on our way to winning it.  In the FA Cup, I seem to remember we beat Leicester, West Ham and Port Vale before unluckily losing at Old Trafford in the 6th round after we had played a LCF and a replay in the previous 7 days.

I always thought that Andy Gray header was him beating Kevin Beattie in the air. The photo actually looks like John Wark though I have no idea if he played that day.

That's the one Morris!  It's definitely John Wark not George Burley as I remembered it though

Great find.

Dennis Shaw was a little bit before my time, but reading that and remembering the likes of Leon Hickman and Rob Bishop brings into sharp focus just how much the Mail has declined.
