Title: Aston Villa vs Norwich City Pre-Match Thread
Post by: AVH87 on February 03, 2016, 01:02:26 PM
Don't want to dwell on the West Ham defeat with ten men too long, and although this game will be tougher without Ayew, I think we will win this one.

Would help if Kozak and Sanchez were back to fitness, to replace Ayew and Bacuna.

Hope springs eternal, but it's hard to see who'll score any goals for us unless we eventually get a penalty, which given our luck will probably be missed.

Would it be worth playing Grealish in a very advanced free role with the licence to get beyond Gabby?

gone for a villa win as finally we might have some luck.
TaxDodger's line up might work.

Also the missus supports Norwich and it was really fun driving in Norfolk ( & listening on local radio) when they beat us 2 - 0  :-\ so I hope I get some personal payback.

And we have bought some players in the transfer window and Norwich didnt so they'll regret that.
Oh......  ::)

I agree. One thing he can do is win free kicks around the box. That may be our best chance of scoring if we don't have any strikers.

Norwich are terrible at the moment - a run of 5 defeats in a row but we all know what happens when a team play us when they're on a run like that don't we?

Fuck it. One nil to us, Lescott header.

Once again, 70% of pollsters saying we won't lose. Incredible!! As I've said on many occasions, to win a team has to score. When was the last match that we looked likely to score?? Please tell me, who is going to score 1 goal for us let alone 2 or more?

As regards the board, why on earth appoint any manager on a fairly high wage when you are not going to back the guy with some money for transfers? If cost cutting means that much to them, they could have appointed me on say £3,000 per MONTH and, sure with this current playing squad could have achieved the same results. Much, much better though, for all of us, having made the right appointment, Garde, at least back him to the hilt. The money is there (see comments regarding us being near the top of the league regarding shirt sales!!) so why not spend some of it for the Manager's and our sakes to at least have given us a little hope!!

I'd start with the same team as last night but put grealish wide left, Gabby up top on his own and start Gil in the hole where he started quite brightly last night.

Gil and Grealish are underwhelming and a pair of fannies but if the rest of the team shows some of the urgency from last night it should make up for it. Norwich have had several pastings back to back I reckon they'll be shitting themselves and we could take advantage.

Gabby to score.

edit. Grealish in for Ayew obviously.

We are so weak up front I would be tempted to experiment and play Richards to lead the pack up front, he may not score but he may cause enough problems to allow the other forwards more opportunities.

It seems implausible but a win on Saturday could see us just 7 points from safety. Considering how bad our results have been it shows that we aren't the only ones. Our unerring ability to fuck up means that it almost certainly won't happen but it if we suspend disbelief for a couple of days then it keeps the flame flickering for just a little while longer.

This is absolutely win or bust. It might not be mathematical yet, but this game really, abso-fucking-lutely is the last ruddy glimmer of a chance that we have. Win and we gain ground on Norwich and get them within squinting sight. Lose and it's game over and a draw leaves a 10 point gap which beyond this weekend is definitely too much. A 7 point gap though? We can still bridge that (maybe...).

We could just do without gifting an early goal or having a stupid sending off. We could do with getting a shitting penalty decision actually go our way.

Villa 1 v 3 Norwich.

Agbonlahor for Villa, finger to mouth goal celebration to firmly answer his critics. This will guarantee him starting every game from now to the end of the season. He will finish the season on no goals as his goal will be ruled as an own goal as his shot was heading for a throw in until it hit the backside of a Norwich defender.

If Sinclair and Grealish don't start, the League goals tally this season from players likely to be on the pitch, will amount to the princely sum of 4.

Gil 2
Lescott 1
Richards 1

I would like to start with O Goals playing as well as he has a couple.

So it's likely to be:

Us 0 Them X

where X >= 0

So often major things can turn on just one game - just look at what happened to us and Leicester after we lost a 2-0 lead there in September - as said above a win takes us to within 7 points of Norwich and would give us some momentum.  Massive favour done by Everton last night to keep Newcastle in our sights - our season just has to have "lift-off" this weekend - 2-0 Villa.

Our support has held. Despite having the worst results out of any of the other league clubs we average only 1,000 less than Everton over the last 5 and half season and they've finished 8, 7 , 7, 6 , 5 , 11 whilst we've circled the plug hole and been embarrassing.

Top 6 finishes saw average gates of:

Looking at the OS I think it will be between 33-35k on Saturday, par for the course even this season amongst the weekly horror show.

You can bank on it.

are any of the injured lot expected back?

There might be one goal in this lot but thats about it. 1-0 might be enough though, first goal being crucial.

Really could do without seeing Bacuna not trying a leg in a Villa shirt for a while.

Westwood might come back in for him, Grealish seems miles down the pecking order but Id like to see him being given a start.

I don't think you can have a recall option if the loan deal is that long. Besides, he's hardly banging them in at a lower level. He still hasn't scored against Championship opposition nevermind being able to do it in the PL. If we throw anyone in i'd stick Rushian on the bench.

I was going to give up my ST for this one as I had a meal booked with friends, it's now been put back an hour so I can now attend both VP and my meal. Can the good denizens of H&AV kindly advise what a gentleman should wear when attending a protest, the match, then polite dinner?

I wa thinking of a dirty protest at VP, the train to New St etc but where, or if, to wash ones hands?

I would advise wearing a querulous frown and alternate this with a savage grimace or a rictus of despair as the situation demands. Do not under any circumstances crack a smile.

If anybody asks why you are looking at them funny explain the difference between an adverb and an adjective and tell them to go and take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut.

Keep your hands to yourself and refrain from touching the handles or doors of the public toilets.

Peter Withe...would appreciate it if you could wash your hands and sanitise yourself before getting the said train to new st as it sounds like you could be on the same train as me back into town. I don't really want the remains of someone's dirty protest to get onto my clothes as I will be in town afterwards and would hate for people to look at me and think I'm a knuckledraggers.

Don't play Sanchez. He's shite.

It's probably a choice between him or Westwood.

For what it's worth, I would go with:

                               Bunn

Richards            Okore       Lescott        Cissokho

                                 Gana

                   Veretout            Westwood

                               Grealish

                     Kozak              Agbonlahor

Subs:- Guzan, Clark, Bacuna, Sanchez, Gil, Sinclair, Gestede

Think it is time to give Gil a rest and give Grealish a go.  We're still a midfielder and striker short.

We've got to get more of the midfield up supporting him, well in general, whoever plays up front. We attack so slowly as it is that we need to supplement it with numbers or we just aren't going to create anything. Saying that though the midfield also lacks pace so sending them forward means they struggle to get back. Oh well.

And repeat...

Yeah, but we've only won two all season.  Its not going to happen now.  I think our last chance was when we played Norwich and Sunderland over Christmas.  Once we lost those games the game was up.  However, I still want us to get some wins between now and the end of the season to get a bit of pride back and to at least go out on a high.

We are fucking gone. A win against Norwich won't save us and its unlikely to happen anyway.

4 quick wins and were right back in it

Yeah, but we've only won two all season.  Its not going to happen now.  I think our last chance was when we played Norwich and Sunderland over Christmas.  Once we lost those games the game was up.  However, I still want us to get some wins between now and the end of the season to get a bit of pride back and to at least go out on a high.

we are playing for pride now

after today 13 games left and a minimum of 7 wins, factor in city, united and arsenal away and spuds at home 7 wins from 9

True, but the board had the opportunity to at least try to do something about it, we didn't

Spot on.  As a supporter I don't think there's anything wrong with being a realist.  You still support the team of course.

We'll win today. And I reckon it'll be the start of something.

I'm just not saying what the something is, or whether it's good or bad.

That is why it is unforgivable that the board did not back Garde in the window and why thy must be removed come what May. They are as clueless as they are incompetent. Stick a striker in that side and we would have a real chance.

Look at the damage these clowns have done to the villa. It is heartbreaking.

a few more draws than defeats, 8 points from a possible 39, minus 12 gd and 1 win in 13 or a third of a season, we are still as shit as when garde arrived

Rarely dream about football but vividly recall last night us not getting another stone-wall penalty and a pitch invasion!

In the last nine league games, we've won 1 drawn 4 lost 4. In Sherwood's last nine games we lost 8, drew 1.

So clearly, in terms of results at least which is the method you've used to compare, while still shit we aren't as shit as when Garde arrived.

Very recent league form then. 1 win 2 draws and a defeat. Not bad as i said.
