Cheer up everybody, this week we are on Mastermind. For those of you who have recovered from our abject performance against Crystal Palace it is on BBC2 at 8.00PM.
Haven't got any idea who will be answering the questions on Aston Villa FC.
Will it be Tom Hanks or perhaps even Micah Richards your guess is as good as mine.
Probably better!
-
What's the betting the the participant will set a record for an all-time low points score or the most passes in succession?
-
If its for most passes sideways and backwards, then the contestant will be Ray Wilkins!!!
-
If its a celebrity one I recall Katherine Merry doing this previously, not sure when/if it was aired.
-
It'll be our Herbert after all he is Mr. Aston Villa.
-
It's Randy and he scores 0
-
And appeared from the US via video link
-
Perhaps it will be Remi and he can say "I started so I will finish".
-
What's the betting the the participant will set a record for an all-time low points score or the most passes in succession?
What are these successive passes you speak of?
-
Gary Delaney?

Cheers for the heads-up.
It's on Friday, not today. And it's not the celebrity version so unlikely to feature either of Messrs Hanks or Richards, unless they went to the the trouble of qualifying via regional heats.

In Mastermind they're the footballing equivalent of game after game that yields no points.

Just to remind you it is on BBC2 tonight at 8PM.

The contestant is Rob Coley
-
Villa have been part of a question two days running on that Vernon Kaye's gameshow 1000 Heartbeats.

Remember the Kumar brothers specialized subject, anoraks, 18.99- 19.56

There used to be a football quiz on TV called Quiz Ball (I think). There were two teams of footballers and they could select to go the short route to goal with one hard question or the long route by passing with up to four easier questions. If one team was our players, we would have to for the one question shot as we couldn't string passes together.

Quiz Machines in pubs still have games that are a variation on what you are describing.
-
shame we cant play along somehow, but at least we can post how many we scored,im giving it a go

Go here! (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/live/bbctwo)

One wrong and no passes.
-
Paul McGrath, that's astonishing.
How did he get that wrong!
I got two wrong both the earlier question pre 1950's
-
9 , some tough ones.
-
Either Mastermind's easier these days, or my knowledge of things Villa runs deeper than I thought. Got the lot.
-
The Scottish pop music questions were piss easy.
-
Nine. How did he not hear me shouting God
-
Who did he say for the Dalian Atkinson question, John Byrne or something?
-
The Scottish pop music questions were piss easy.
Yeah, did better on them ! (hangs head in shame)
-
The Scottish pop music questions were piss easy.
I did better with those than the Villa ones.
-
didn't get trevor ford or that fkn stupid Dalian Atkinson question
-
Who did he say for the Dalian Atkinson question, John Byrne or something?
I thought he said that.
-
The Scottish pop music questions were piss easy.
Yeah, did better on them ! (hangs head in shame)
Same here.
-
One wrong and no passes.
As opposed to the current team, 11 wrong and no passing
-
His 1992/93 knowledge was rusty (Alan Evans and John Byrne) but it can't be easy under the spotlight, answering things with little time for thought.
-
10 & 13 on the Scottish pop questions.
-
I was gobsmacked he didn't get the Doug Ellis question. He seemed much better on the older stuff.
-
I was surprised at the ones he didn't get but, anorak that I am, I got all 13.
-
What a comeback. It's an omen.
-
The Scottish pop music questions were piss easy.
Yeah, did better on them ! (hangs head in shame)
Same here.
and me
-
If they wanted to be pedantic they should have failed him on the Trevor Ford answer. It should have been Trefor Ford his Welsh birth name. But being the gentle fellow he was he didn't mind the English using Trevor. Er perhaps gentle isn't the right word as most fifties goalies would tell you!
I very nearly got the Blues one wrong I couldn't remember when Doug was at Wolves and went for my first choice.
But top marks for Villa about half on the general knowledge.
-
Got them all. Engage Smug Mode.
-

It is not easy. Cant think why he said John Bryne though. Perhaps he meant Johnny Bryne who played for West Ham in our colours about a decade earlier.
-
13/13.
Piss easy.
-

Nope. I got eight on the first general knowledge round and have now interrupted viewing as my girlfriend wants to watch 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Will resume if she falls asleep.
-
Got all the Villa questions right.
Thought they were pretty obvious questions to go for (the European Cup, 3 of the best players in the last 25 years, 2 of the most talked about post war forwards).
Anyone who has followed the club for some time should have enough basic knowledge to at least have stab at all of those questions. The only tricky question was the 46 Derby game (guessed 6th round, couldn’t remember whether it was 5th or 6th).
Shame the Doug question wasn’t about the bicycle kick!
-
Got em all. Brother got five wrong. He's out of the family
-
I thought I was mastermind then got the last question wrong. Imagine the pressure though in the studio.
I have played in Rothmans quizzes before and you do feel on the spot.
-
I know more about Scottish pop music than I do about Aston Villa.

Technically, it was Sixth Round, First Leg (the only year in which the FA Cup has been held over two legs).
-
I know as much about Scottish pop as the Villa with 12 on each.
-
Beginning to wish I hadn't skipped the Scottish pop now. Might watch it again.

Don't bother, nothing on Aztec Camera, The Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits or The Bluebells.
-
Or The Close Lobsters, Teenage Fanclub or even Runrig.
-
Or Irn Bru.
-
I got four in the Scottish pop. Shouldn't have bothered.
-
Altered images?
-
They got a mention.
-
I prefer Scottish pop to Aston Villa these days.
Although Deacon Blue are on a par with Agbonlahor in my affections.

I'm with you on Deacon Blue but my other half despises them at the same level I reserve for Queen and U2. When they came up as first question last night she left the room, meaning that there wasn't anyone around to witness my genius.
-
The Exploited you say? I thought we were talking about Scottish music not long-suffering Villa fans? Right, kids?
-

You and your brother were two of them.
-
I don't remember a Scottish pop group called "Intelligent, Good-Looking Older Brother and Nobhead Younger Sibling".

She could have shown a bit more dignity?

The 'dancing' the woman did is one of the many irritating things about them

As Half Man Half Biscuit once sang:
I am the girl from Deacon Blue
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
-
I got 3 on the Scottish pop round but 13 on the Villa one! Well chuffed.

Proud to have a fellow fan on a TV show that chose our great club as a subject . Whether he done badly or not , just glad he chose the Villa .
Being on the spot in a studio and in front of millions answering questions about the club you love is slightly different to begin at home on the sofa wit a can of of Bud and answering questions about the club you love.

Dave Woodhall and I got the highest two scores ever on Sky's Club Class quiz many years ago, and I, for one, was shitting myself.
(22 and 21, and the questions were harder).
-
The Exploited you say? I thought we were talking about Scottish music not long-suffering Villa fans? Right, kids?
In the summer of 1989 I met a bloke in a pub / club in Edinburgh who said he had been in The Exploited. I believed him. Really decent chatty fella, and he had either stayed in Brum or played a few gigs there as he knew a number of the venues and bands from that era.

I then got the lowest ever in the next round, about general football.

I was gobsmacked he didn't get the Doug Ellis question. He seemed much better on the older stuff.
Me too. And McGrath being our PFA Player of the Year winner in 1993.
-
Got them all except the Dalian Atkinson one, where I didn't take in the question.
Also, those questions were long! Aren't you allowed to interrupt?

yes but if he starts he has to finish

Part of what I like about Mastermind is that they don't interrupt. The time you're allocated is based on how long it takes to answer not how long the question is, so there's no benefit to interrupting. Although if you guess incorrectly the time it takes him to read the correct answer does count against you. If you pass he doesn't read the correct answer until the end of the round.
Much better than University Challenge where the little oiks always answer after he says "Which poet...".

Wordsworth.
-
Correct, Scumbag College Cooper.
-
9 - The old stuff did for me. I really should do my history but anything pre 70s/80s is really out of my range.
-
I got 12 -couldn't remember the round for Villa v Derby.
-
Finally watched it. Got 11. I'd have got Trevor Ford with a few seconds more thought but they said the answer too quick, and had a total brain freeze on the Derby question.

Is it online (apart from the uk-only iplayer) ?

I don't think so, I watched it on iplayer.
