Title: 100% Villa - help needed
Post by: Walmley Villa on December 28, 2015, 11:44:04 AM
Mods please move if this isn't appropriate.

My wife bought me a metal sign for Christmas - see below. The man she got it from was a retired sign writer but not a football fan. He thought it was from the 50s (each letter is individually painted and that was apparently phased out in the 50s) but it mentions the North Stand so is obviously later.

Has anybody got any recollection of this sign? Or better still any photos? I've looked through the Terry Weir book  in the hope it might be in the background of a picture but nothing in there. Would love to get a better idea of date and where it was hung.

It's double sided, identical each side. About 4 foot high.

North Stand being members only with a terrace would date it at late eighties.

"pay at the designated turnstile" for away fans dates it before "All Tickets only" era so I would say prior to mid 80's (???)

Villa in Denmark might be able to get it carbon-dated or something. ;-)

Very late 70s- early 80s from outside the then main ticket office in the North Stand??

Or possibly from outside of the old souvenir shop/travel club building at the front of Trinity Rd Stand?

The North Stand became members only in 1986 so it's between then and the lower North Stand becoming seated in 1990-91.

Another question Dave. Did they still call the North Stand lower terrace the Witton End terracing even once the new stand was built?

I'm certain they did, but don't ask me when it became the North Stand Lower. Like the names Villa Park and the Holte End, it just happened over time.

Only the paint!

Alternatively you could measure the lead levels in the paint and the titanium oxide content of the white paint as these have all changed over the years.

Or you could just ask Dave.😝

If it is lead paint, the molecular degeneration of lead can be dated exactly. Get a little flake of it and send it to the public analyst. Get Ben (WV's undergraduate son) to do it. Hope it's not a fougazi.
