I just posted this on the God thread. Those were the days!
-
Only decided to go to this a few days before as we knew it was on tv (and it was a Sunday and all that). Sat in the Upper Trinity just above the old directors' box - am I glad I decided to go !!!
My lasting memory was Neville Southall's face when he picked the ball out of the net after the 5th and 6th goals !!
-
I remember this game so well. It was one of the first Villa games I went to and I think it cemented my position as a Villa fan.
-
didnt McGrath score an own goal near the end.
We plundered them, remember Heath coming on half time for us.
-
Keown, Keown,
What's the score ?
Keown, what's the score ?

As I remember McGrath scored a stunning own goal to make it 6-2.
-
A whopping 17,637 were there to witness it.
-
Is that all ?
I know it was 3.30pm on a Sunday and it was on tv - but that's incredibly low.
-
the funny thing is that if Everton had won they would have gone top of the league.
I remember gates at the time at all grounds were sparse but not that low.

I was at the game and recall it being a decent crowd. The shots before and during the game show a pretty full Holte End, which would have been nearly 17,000 on its own.
-
In much the same way that I often look around the ground now and think, "Is there bollocks 34,000 people actually in here", back then I'd look around and think that the stated attendance was some sort of tax-dodging technique. And I wasn't there, I was helping my old man demolish a chimney breast.
-
I still have it on VHS, I saw it while dragging out the Christmas decs. I had to record it as I was at a Christening.
-
Proper old school, 17000 making as much noise as double that now, stonewash denim, primary colour trackie tops and ski jackets, Union Jack flags, everyone in the Trinity Lower trying to get on the telly.....sigh.....
-
Magic stuff. Give me those days anyhow.
-
26 years ago! Jesus!
-
being in the Holte for the 4th and 5th was probably one of the best (and most insane!) standing at Villa Park experiences ever. IMO.
-
Cos it was televised and such a big win against a then top team , the nation took notice of platt and daley and our championship challenge.
-
One of my abiding memories is the Everton fans going absolutely mental below us celebrating their goals. At 6-1/2 down that's strange behaviour and I've always thought them an odd bunch since.
-
I was in the Holte and my glasses flew off after the third or fourth goal; some bloke about fifty yards away found them and I went down to get them. They flew off again for the next goal and the same bloke managed to pluck them out of the air. What a fucking day.
-
Watched the game in a caravan in a holiday camp. I had stopped going regularly but saw every home game that season after that and bought a season ticket the following year and have had a season ticket for the vast majority of seasons since.
-
The only downside to that day was getting back to my car to find the stereo had been nicked.
