OSTRAVA, Czechoslovakia, Nov 15, Reuter - Josef Venglos, Czechoslovak manager of English first division soccer club Aston Villa, did some poaching in his home land to sign Banik Ostrava sweeper Ivo Stas.
The deal, including a two-year contract, is worth 200,000 pounds sterling (390,000 dollars) and was settled at a meeting in Prague earlier this week between Banik officials and Villa chairman Doug Ellis, the Czechoslovak club said on Thursday.
Stas, 25, who is on the fringes of the national team, scored an own goal when Villa eliminated Banik from the UEFA Cup last month.
Stas, who joins fellow Czechoslovaks Ludek Miklosko (West Ham) and Jan Stejskal (Queen's Park Rangers) in the English league, has already left for England and could play in Villa's game at Norwich on Saturday

Yet another of that category of players that --- errrrrm  came with quite a reputation BUT - never exactly actually really played - so to speak -

To name another - Neale Cooper

True. All that watching what you eat and drink, training twice a day and passing the ball to teammates' feet. Continental pufters.

So quite a Villa career he had. No competitive appearances but one goal.
In the few preseason games he made he managed to miss a pen and scored a goal that shouldn’t have been given!

Forgotten what he looked like? That's the first time I've ever seen a photo of him.

I was there the night he scored the goal that shouldn't have been. Away to Witney Town in Oxfordshire (I think BFR had done some coaching there n his Oxford days). It went in through the side netting if I remember right. I also had a chat with Kevin Richardson on the touchline. I don't think they had any stands so it was quite an informal set up.
