I tend to let my mind wander during International breaks ( last round took me to thinking how long ago had it been that the ball had been kicked out of Villa Park). This time I'm trying to work out how many Villa testimonial matches I've attended in the last 40 years. Worryingly I can only recall Charlie Aitkens where I think the attendance was under 15,000.
I know there have been others though it is becoming an extinct event. Does anyone out there know what testimonial matches there have been since Charlie's and for what reason? I'm confident that both Alex Cropley and Brian Little had benefit matches because of a curtailed football playing career but I can't think of too many that qualified under the 10 year playing criteria.
I am sure that some of my fellow aged supporters have been to all and can list them - any help is gratefully received.
-
Cropley didn't have one - are you thinking of John Robson, when Cropley came on and scored? Little, Keith Leonard, Paul Birch, Nigel Spink, Allan Evans, Paul McGrath, Ron Saunders, Sid, Tony Barton (memorial).
-
Thank you- and you are right,Cropley scored an absolute screamer at John Robsons, so I must have been there. If anyone can remember the matches and who they were against plus the score it might just help me piece my memory together.
One assumes that Gabby is due for one soon or are testimonials a tad passé considering the wages footballers in the Premiership especially benefit from?
-
There was the 6-6 testimonial game around 79/80 ish. Against an England select team?
-
I went to Brian Little's testimonial match, played a week or so before the European Cup Final in 1982. I recall the attendance was dismally small, maybe not much more than 10,000.
-
I remember going to Fred Turnbull's at the end of the 1975-6 season. We lost at home to the Albion 1-0. They had just been promoted so it was a logical choice for him as they brought a good few - I was in the usual place in the Witton End with my dad and it was mixed with no trouble.
-
Ron Saunders against Blooos 1980 end of season and we lost.
-
Brian's was May 18th against an England XI. IIRC Brian scored 2, maybe all 3 in a 3-2 win.

John Robson's, October 1978.

I cried because nobody would take me to the pele game
what was that game all about
ive never forgiven em for that

Cropley didn't have one - are you thinking of John Robson, when Cropley came on and scored? Little, Keith Leonard, Paul Birch, Nigel Spink, Allan Evans, Paul McGrath, Ron Saunders, Sid, Tony Barton (memorial).
We played Portsmouth away, August '82 for a Cropley testimonial.
Dennis had one in May 1985, home to an England XI.

I think that was the night Leeds rioted at the Hawthorns.
-
I think only ever went to 2 testimonials, Brian and Tony Barton. Everything else i'm pulling from the Friendlies & Testimonials book.
-
This always tickles me when I look at the fixtures in the book
Dec 20th 1989 Nettleham (A) Opening of Floodlights*
*This game was abandoned due to floodlight failure
-
We had one for Jimmy Dugdale, Sept 1992 home to sha.

Why did we have a testimonial for McGrath?
-
I cried because nobody would take me to the pele game
what was that game all about

I think it was for our AV floodlights, but not 100% sure.
We hired a separate generator as there were a lot of power cuts at the time.
I'm pretty sure we also played Bayern Munich that season, too.
If I recall correctly, we beat Pele's Santos 3-1 and Beckenbaur's Bayern 2-1

I was at the Santos game in February 1972 - I though it was a prestige friendly ?
As previously mentioned the game was in doubt as it was in the days of strikes and power cuts etc.. and the club hired a generator to allow the game to go ahead; however I'm almost sure it meant only 3 of the 4 floodlights could be on at any one time and a decision was made to swap the one that wasn't used in the first half, to be on for one of the other ones at the start of the second half - and Santos almost threatened to walk off in disagreement.
I thought we drew 1-1 against Bayern Munich in 1973 - we did score one goal without reply in another game I remember against them nine years later.

Alex Cropley’s was away - Mon Aug 23 1982 Portsmouth W 4-3 Withe, Walters 2, Mortimer
There was also a 3-3 draw with Coventry Monday 20 April 1970 for Charlie Aitken (his first Testimonial). Att 9,512. Scorers McMahon, Anderson, Godfrey / Rafferty, O'Rourke, Machin.
I remember going to a Testimonial at Villa Park for the referee Jack Taylor in 1977, three years after he referred the World Cup final. Midlands XI v Ron Greenwood's England XI. The Midlands team was: Brian Little, John Gidman & Dennis Mortimer (Villa), Jim Montgomery, Tony Want & Terry Hibbitt (Blues), Bryan Robson, Derek Statham & John Wile (Albion), John Richards & John McAlle (Wolves) and Barry Powell (Cov). I haven't remembered that - it was from a photo in the following Villa programme. Attendance just under 7,000 on a miserable November night.
Considering some of the players not involved (Andy Gray, Alex Cropley, Trevor Francis, Laurie Cunningham, Cyrille Regis, Willie Johnston, Kenny Hibbitt, Tommy Hutchison, Terry Yorath, Ian Wallace) could the five clubs muster up such a decent line-up between them nowadays?
-
I cant believe there have been so many - however it seems that the Premier League has put an end to the number of true testimonials ( i.e a reward for 10 years loyalty to one club).
Looking at the helpful list from MorrisNeilson ( thank you) I am surprised how poor the attendances were, some of the stated figures are weird when comparing them. The top four being Ron Saunders, Paul Birch Mick Wright and Fred Turnbull? Seems incredible that Sid only managed to muster 4,450 for his testimonial!
My thanks to all contributors, it has certainly helped to jog some memories.
-
Some very sad attendances there, although some are on crap days for a football match. Monday/Tuesday? Pretty shite.
-
Sid's was boosted by about 2,000 Stoke fans, who mostly turned up as he was rumoured to be signing for them. Instead he came back to us.

I think Sid's might be the game where the Stoke kit man came on as sub. There was a film about him a year or so ago.
Also, I’ve missed out 1978 for some unknown reason.......

Was there one in the 80's where George Best played?
I remember the Santos game with the queue for the Holte End stretching almost to the expressway (I think I eventually got in at half time).

That was the Bradford game.

some poor attendances there. Remember 76 we played Eintract Frankfart at home something to do with Dunlop and we got something like 23,000 and of course the Rangers game was around 17,000 both of which were "friendlies" or meant to be.

I remember going to the Eintracht Frankfurt game - I was given a ticket for the old Upper trinity Road - was this just a friendly ?
Also - was this before or after the Rangers game ? I remember both were in the Autumn of 1976-77

Eintracht was something to do with Dunlop's anniversary - sixtieth sounds about right.
-
I remember going to the Sty to see a Ron Atkinson International XI play Small Heath in Frank Worthington's testimonial (although I had to look that up) shortly after BFR had taken the Villa job which appears to have been on 10th September 1991.
There were several Villa players in the line-up plus some long-retired but well known name - I remember Keegan still looking quite fit but George Best came on and barely ambled around.

How come Agbonlahor hasn't had one yet?
-
Joe Gallagher's testimonial against us at St Andrews two days after we won the league was one great night out.
-
I went to a testimonial match for Ray Wilson (WBA left back), at the Hawthorns at the end of the 74-75 season, a few days after we'd been promoted. I'd say Villa made up two-thirds of the crowd. The game ended 2-2, and was a proper game.

Cheers for the reminder Brian - I went to that game - when the chant had become "WON THE LEAGUE, WON THE LEAGUE" - but I'd completely forgotten why the game was played.
(whisper - I always felt Joe Gallagher was a decent player - certainly always played well against us).
-
Went to the testimonials for Nigel Spink and Gordon Cowans. The pitch invasion after Spinksy's was the one and only time I have been on the Villa Park pitch!! I seem to remember David Platt arriving in a helicopter to kick one game off. Was that Birchy's?

Back in the 1970s it wasn't quite the "issue" it is now and I remember being on the pitch a few times as a teenager, notably when we went up from the 3rd Division (and winning the first leg of the Youth Cup final) and I'll never forget being in Trinity Road Enc for the Sunderland game in 1975 and watching the Holte End empty on to the pitch from the centre circle. I can also remember the celebrations at the end of 1976-77 when we felt we were on the cusp of something special.
It really is a magnificent place to be. Must get round to another tour before too long.
