Post by: Toronto Villa on October 24, 2015, 02:02:03 PM
In what we all hope is Sherwood's final game in charge he has chosen as follows:

Guzan, Hutton, Richards, Lescott, Richardson, Bacuna, Gana, Grealish, Ayew, Gabby, Gestede

Gueye missed his "mini pre-season", so thither is to give him some stamina work.

What an absolutely gormless twat we've got for a manager.

I could have understood 4-5-1, but that's just bollocks.

Ki, shelvey and sigurdsson against gana, Bacuna and grealish (I guess??)

That line-up could only be the product of a not-very-bright person on two hours' sleep trying desperately to prove how original they are. I mean, by Christ I hope it works, but you really worry. Swansea's strongest area is their central midfield - solution? Vacate the centre of midfield. Bloody hell, let's see what happens.

What you're all missing is that he's actually done what we all wanted and gone back to the shape from the Leicester game but he's decided to start without a midfield and slowly bring it on rather than taking it off.

I think anybody going to the match today that was still supportive of Sherwood when seeing that line up will immediately change their mind. Swansea are going to have to be completely piss poor for us to get anything from the game.

Fuck me. I have seen some line ups and thought bit strange in my time, but this one is fucking suicide. All that was wrong with the subs at Leicester born out in the starting eleven here. No Gil, no Veretout who was or best central midfielder against Stoke, Gabby in, Grealish in no man's land. We have some real talent but without a structured way of playing it will never flourish. Feck of Sherwood. If we win today you Know that it was pure fluke as the team was clearly picked by lottery.

It's 4-2-3-1. With Bacuna in defensive midfield, next to Gana. Grealish the playmaker, Ayew and Gabby as wide forwards. Gestede as the Target Man.

Bacuna in defensive midfield.

I think his only thinking is to pick players that can press whenever Swansea have the ball. That's fair enough but it's one dimensional thinking. It's also too bloody defensive. We're going to spend a lot of the match without the ball which will limit the chances we can create and give them the best chance of scoring.

I agree with the comment about likening Sherwood to a forum poster. You don't expect this sort of thing from a Premier League manager. I've never seen such tactical naivety from a top flight manager.

I just don't understand what goes on with our coaching teams. Lambert ended up with a coaching staff of about 3, with the team looking disorganised and clueless. Now we've got quite a full coaching staff but the tactics and changes (or lack of in the case of the Liverpool game) have been ridiculous. It's quite incredible to be in a situation where us average punters have more of a clue than a guy being paid about £2m a year (and whatever his coaching staff get paid).

Our board have been way to lenient letting this go on for so long and shows a lack of football understanding on their part too.

He's daring them to sack him because he knows he's out of his depth and wants out, but he knows that everyone knows that he's out of his depth which means that he'll never work again unless he can get on the Sky hyperbole machine gravy train so he really needs his pay-off.

Someone on the BBC website just made the point that the Bayern side is like a Garth Croooks team of the week where the players in positions/role makes zero sense in an actual match.

It looks with the today's lineup he's used some random selection criteria to pick 11 players and then just sent them out to play.  Maybe who turned up training earliest in the week??

That possibly ranks as one of the worst first 11's I've ever seen us put out. Fucking abysmal. It's not even just the quality of player either, it's that it just has absolutely zero balance.

I'm actually a little shocked at your optimism or pragmatism. You're right about Swansea's form but the one thing we know is they have good players, who like to play possession football. What this line up will now allow them to do is push our powder puff midfield back into our back four and they will press us inside our half for large parts of the game. Pray they are so out of form that the ball doesn't end up at the feet of Ayew or Gomis in the process. The other tactic will be to knock it long to Gestede and hope to Gabby and Grealish play off him. Gestede isn't exactly the best at holding up the ball, and he's most effective running onto crosses. Who's going to provide those?

I hoe you're right Monty, but this team looks incredibly soft and weak in the areas we need to be resolute.

The only rationale I can think of for the starting line up is that Sherwood is actively trying to get fired.

Regardless if we fluke a win today he should be immediately removed from his position  after the game

Hutton's crossing is the only thing that makes Richardson's look decent, pick a guy who's only real value is heading in crosses, pick 2 wide men to cut inside and 2 full backs who can't cross the ball, fucking genius.

Positives Ayew, Gana and Hutton.  Ironically I'd bring Hutton off for Sanchez and push Bacuna at right back as he's better going forward than Hutton (Hutton gets into the right positions but then doesnt seem to know what to do)

Gabby is pressing well on occasions.  Grealish just not in the game - Gill on for me.

At half time the commentators in my stream have shown 2 situations where Gestede should be bursting into the area, but instead he barely ran - until it was too late to get into a good position. Urgency is missing.

See decent I can accept (although I personally think he isn't involved enough considering he's the senior player in the front 4) the great was was what i objected to, as I say, I think he's largely anonymous, which is what he always does when we're struggling to build anything.  And then he misses our best chance of the game, needs to do better there.

How many other sides, when they have a throw in, fail to move to give the taker options as often as we do?

We've been exactly the same for as long as I can remember. Even under different managers with different players.

Randy needs to pay big bucks for a striker in January.

In the meantime, wh ythe fuck aren't we using Kozak? He's no more mobile than Gestede, but at least he has a footballing brain and gets into good positions.

Even with some hefty competition of late, I reckon that Gestede is easily the worst player I've seen in a Villa shirt in 20 years.  He's an absolute cart horse, and the TV just correctly showed the lazy c*** jogging around when everybody else was pushing forward.  Lazy, shit, donkey.
Did you see Bowery play?

The issue with playing Gestede is that completely stifles our creativity. We have to play a certain way to accommodate him so all of the set up in the final third is geared around getting it wide and looping a cross in.

He's got absolutely no idea how to control a game tactically. His changes don't seem to have anything to do with what's actually happening on the pitch.

Yep 100% agree. There's a lot of technically gifted players there. We'd be way more fucked if Sherwood got his way and we were being left with his choice of players.

At least when they're a manager with less than 50 games of experience, you have to show that you can learn fast or you're out of your depth, and he's learnt fuck all since he arrived, other than being shit doesn't matter to the media so long as you're pally with them.
