Surprised at the team, but shouldn't really seeing how Dim Sherwood still doesn't know his best team or formation.

Where is Veretout? I half expected, after his comments re new signings, that he would replace most of them with the old guard so maybe Richsrdson for Amavi is a nod to that. I have more time for Richardson than most on here but Amavi is one of the few that have hit the ground running...

There are two players that will never get dropped when fit under Sherwood. One is Westwood, we all know the other. I just don't understand how an international player, recently captain for his country and a specialist defensive midfielder wouldn't be employed in a game like this. I would have Gana and Sanchez to protect the back four and allow Gil and Grealish to then do their thing.

Here's the other thing. If you are going to pick Gestede, why on earth would you not then select the player who has most effective in providing him with the crosses? And on the other side we have the marauding Hutton. I don't understand this selection at all, and especially at FB. It's clear to me he has picked a defensive back four and not one that will push forward, or if they do, well heaven help us.

Hang on, hold yer horses, I've just realised the logic of dropping Sanchez and Amavi. The plan is to play shit in the first half and shock Mourinho by putting our best players on in the second.

He's not called 'Tactics' for nothing.

I think he must be wanting the sack and the pay off and is determined to take us as far down the tubes with him as he can. You actually begin to wonder if he is taking the piss deliberately. It will be all over I suspect by the time I start watching Wales vs SA so at least I can relax and enjoy the rugby for what it is.

What's astonishing is that he's had two weeks to really think about this and this is what he came up with. How on earth is that back four keeping Costa quiet on his first game back? It's going to be backs to the walls unless Chelsea are significantly more shit than they have been this season.

This could be 5 or 6 today
But of course Sherwood knows exactly what he is doing

We're either gonna score a hatful, but still struggle to stop them scoring more, or struggle to get out of our own half as they score for fun. Can't see it finishing goalless. Not optimistic. Lescott, Richardson, Westwood. No Sanchez. Ayew AND Grealish AND Gil. Hmmm.

That's not as much the problem, as if you are going to play all four how are you protecting them so they can have some freedom? There is not point having them if the rest of the side cannot retain possession and play in the Chelsea half. Gana is going to be really exposed in the middle.

Once again I'm left bewildered by the starting lineup and can't quite work out the formation...is it a flat 442, 442 diamond or 451???

Pleased to see Ayew getting a start although this may not be the best game to bring him in; Amavi being dropped for Richardson seems more of a defensive minded decision so dont expect our FBs to be getting forward; Sanchez must be knackered after only returning on Thursday.

Apparently this is the "best villa side to get at Chelsea"...I dont quite see it like that.

How is Richardson a better bet than Amavi? It is not like he is more defensive.

No creativity at home vs Stoke, no defensive solidity away at a wounded Chelsea. He is clueless.

Like the Liverpool defence did?

In some ways, it's a similar line up to Leicester. Two fowards, with Gil and Grealish behind them. If he's have packed out the midfield, he might have been moaned at for not being more attacking and having a go.

I think the attacking players he has chosen are fine Clamps. It's the players he has chosen to support and allow them to do their job that I'm concerned about. What justification is there in dropping arguably our best player this season for Richardson. Or retaining Westwood?

A few months with the benefit of Sherwood's management and it seems a player who was supposedly the best left back in Europe last season (according to those stats they use these days) is now not as good as Kieron Richardson.

How to stop Ronaldo and Messi, give them to Sherwood for a couple of months.

I would probably have gone with Richardson over Amavi at left back, but would of moved him to left midfield where his crosses can do some damage. Amavi also plays midfield for France.

I would of gone with:

                            Guzan

       Hutton  Richards   Lescott   Richardson

         Traore    Sanchez  Gana     Amavi

I think we will find there will be a massive gap between the defence and forwards because our midfield will either sit too deep or won't be able to keep possession. If we can keep possession when we have it and run at them we have a chance. It's when we don't, can we stop them from playing with it, and if we win it back how far away are the attacking players?

Hutton should have done better.
Their left back is shit. There is joy to be had there.

That back four is awful frankly. We have to believe we can win and at least we appear to be trying to get behind them. If we do manage to get in front that crowd will turn on the players quickly. It's if we go behind they are likely to grow in confidence. They are the champions after all.

I think he's been well and truly criticized by almost everyone on here for his rubbish tactics in recent weeks. That hasn't been the case today. The tactics have been pretty sound overall, we should have taken the lead, and those tactics that seemed to be working now need to be changed because of individual errors. Not because of anything Chelsea really did.

Chelsea look a tired side and plain to see why they've got off to a bad start - teams that have a real go at them have every chance of winning. We started well but gifting them goals just puts any good work to waste. Sherwood can't be blamed for Guzan's stupidity - he needs to be dropped - surely Bunn can't be any worse

I think the tactics have been unspectacular - it's fairly standard sit-back-and-hope stuff. Bringing in Richardson for Amavi looks a terrible move, to be honest - he's been quite bad.

Well I certainly didn't expect anything spectacular in terms of tactics, but they had been sufficient up to the goal to match, even outwit Chelsea at times. The second point of not picking Amavi is indefensible. I have no idea what he was thinking or indeed what Richardson provides.

Guzan has been a great keeper, season after season but his biggest weakness has always been his kicking. I really wonder why despite having a goalkeeping coach, the issue has never been addressed. I read recently that before he decided to become a goalkeeper he was a midfielder. The mind boggles at just how poor a player he must have been. Bananas for feet.

Guzan should have spent the entire summer improving his kicking, how many points has he cost us the last 15 or so months? Even if he's been told to cut out long hoofs then his in game management should be telling him that smashing a ball at a defender under pressure is not a good move, keep it simple, get rid of it. He's shit. His shot stopping isn't even that good.

As opposed to Richardson, who usually drops at least 2 a half.

I'm with Toronto, the bog-standard tactics aren't doing too badly today (although Gestede has been anonymous and done nothing - maybe if Ayew was up front and we had another midfielder in there Gil wouldn't have to come so deep so much?). However, bringing in Richardson is without logic.

We've competed fairly well and haven't been overrun, despite having Gil, Grealish and Ayew on. Clearly they've been instructed to work harder tracking back, and it's had the desired effect of making us more solid. We haven't created much, mind, but then Chelsea are keeping their shape well and not exposing their back four much.

Guzan, however, needs to fuck off and play volleyball or something, because his feet are about as much use as tits on a salmon.

What the fuck is Hutton up to.

And how many fucking deflected goals have Villa let in this season!

Hutton? Hid you see the space Richards gave him to receive the ball.

While Westwood stood watching.

Hutton. Westwood. Richardson. Keeper a shell of his former self.

No wonder we are doomed. Seriously.

It has happened so many times. Falcao needed a goal for Man U come to Villa Park and we provided. I recall Torres for Liverpool before that going through a sticky patch and enjoying a game once again at VP. We are such a charitable bunch. I know there are loads in between too.

Didn't Diego Forlan have a horrendous spell for Man u? ...Until the charity that is Aston Villa duly answered the call.

Did Shevchenko score against us too?

Of course he did.

This is part of the reason I don't want Moyes. Personality matters, that's what Sherwood brought last season - however, it's turned out that he's not so much full of confidence as not in control of his emotions, which seem to be infectious one way or another. Moyes, not exactly the cheeriest at the best of times and also feeling the stress this season at Sociedad, wouldn't give this team the emotional spark back.

Gestede is a decent striker but he's simply not suited to this squad or style of play. We're trying to play fairly tippy-tappy stuff, largely through the middle or down the channels. Gestede needs wingers who can scoot to the bye-line and drill crosses over. Players like Townsend or Lennon, funnily enough.

Although our signings have been pretty decent in terms of quality, I would question what system they were purchased to play in. Did Sherwood specify how he wanted to play, with Almstadt and co then going away to identify appropriate signings? Or did Almstadt decide on a style of play and then expect Sherwood to follow it?

To me, it doesn't look like there was enough consultation over the summer. It looks a mess.

That's absolutely spot on, depressingly

I can't stand this limp, placid acceptance of absolute rubbish.

Four points from what is now the first quarter of the season - in which we have had plenty of winnable games - is beyond pathetic

Second game in a row that Adama has kept the fucking ball way too long, he's becoming annoying.

Sherwood should have gone after Stoke if they don't sack him now they never will
He will go after we lose to Swansea

The team just look miserable, despondent, listless. I'm not totally sure that Moyes, who's sourer than a lemon who's walked in to find Mrs. Lemon in bed with the milkman, would really cure the problem.

What a pethetic performance. Fully anaemic. No movement going forward, no responsibility. No passion. Going through the motions and ticking off another game. I am putting decent money on us dropping tonight before the odds are no longer worth it. 3-4 games time we will be 10 adrift, not 4. Fucking heartless.

Absolute dross second half.

Accepting Westwood in the team, not good enough
Accepting selling Benteke and replacing with Gestede, not good enough
Accepting 7 defeats in 9 games, not good enough
Accepting a goal keeper who can barely use his feet to walk nevermind kick a ball, not good enough
Accepting Richardson and Hutton as your full backs, not good enough
Accepting a chairman who repeatedly makes stupid appointments all through out the club, not good enough

The whole club fucking stinks to high heaven of people either promoted above their stations, on a last pay day, or just don't give a shit.
I'm at the point where I almost want relegation, just to break the monotony of being whipping boys. I'm at my limit with this flaccid club. Sort your fucking selves out or get out!! You greedy, useless Bastards.

Any manager who can set a team up and Instill a bit of confidence will do. Sherwoods chopping and changing has destroyed the team spirit.

He should be sacked immediately after the game. To lose 8 of your first 10 games of the season is utterly unacceptable for a club like the Villa.
I curse the day that charlatan Lerner took over.

Never thought I'd pray for a Sunderland equaliser.  7 points adrift in mid October is really fcukin scary.

Being 7 points behind Albion doesn't matter, were 4 adrift of Bournemouth in17th and 5 behind Norwich 6 behind Watford (im discounting Stoke) I am hanging my hat on keeping in touch with and catching those but cannot see that without a managerial change.

Not just the chopping and changing, it's everything - his demeanour, attitude, the way he goes out of his way to blame players and take the heat off himself, it's all so demoralising.

1 point from 8 games.

To not get rid of him after today is crazy just because it is Chelsea - he has had 7 games before this of ineptitude.

I actually feel numb now. I have no excitement, expectation or even flight of fancy when it comes to match days. Most of our play in the middle of the park is much better than under Lambert; the passing is crisper, more inventive and attacking, but everything else in woeful. The defensive mistakes are beyond amateur and to say the attack is toothless is an understatement.

If there is anything a "new team" needs, its a rigid structure and a firm philosophy. Sherwood offers neither.

He is desperately looking for a solution, hoping that he will stumble upon it and that is what I see reflected in our team. Nothing more than a 'hope' that it will come good.

No one can see what he's trying to do and that IS the biggest worry.

I feel that Sherwood has to go
