Clacker in midfield? Good if true. We need bite there. Would have paired him with Sanchez though, not Vivienne.

Didn't Sherwood suggest going with a 3 CB system and employing 2 wing backs. Gabby and Gestede up front in what looks a 3-5-2.

Mr Sox you need to pull your socks up with the Match Threads and get us off this shit streak we've been on.

He needs to decide whether to play Guzan or Bacuna in goal fairly sharpish.

Yeah I think this could work well. No kozak even on the bench? Did I miss an injury or something?

Not the biggest fan of Guzan right now but I wouldn't drop him for Bacuna. Bit harsh.

Still possibly a 4-3-3?

Rudy up top with Sinclair and gabby down the wings.

I would try the 3-5-2 though, could work well with Bacuna and Amavi As out and out wing backs.

Interesting to see if it is 3-5-2. I am a big fan of Gil, would have liked him to start. I noticed that he got the note 5 against WBA in the Birmingham Mail, I thought he was our best player, though I agree he was not at his best. I hope Westwood improves and Veretou and Gestede grab the chance.

Stan's tweet says 4-1-4-1 but it looks like 3 at the back to me, with Amavi and Bacuna as wing backs, Veretout/Westwood in midfield with Sinclair behind Gabby and Rudy.

Lots go square pegs in round holes in that team whichever formation we play.
the squad isn't that small to justify such bizarre selections in my opinion.

I hope gabby has done his job off the field and highlighted to the new lads exactly how pumped up they need to be in this encounter to match the Blues.

If it's 4-3-3 (and I'm pretty sure that it would be), then it's Clark playing about 20 feet further forward than normal and everybody else in their normal position isn't it?

Clark and Westwood in the midfield! No mobility whatsoever.

Surely Sanchez needed

Why not Jack or Gil. At least one of them to play to actually have some flair in the team.

No width as well

Looks a very poor team to me.

Going up the loft to find my prayer mat

That midfield looks very lightweight to me, SHA will be snapping into challenges, we're in big trouble if Westwood and Veretout go into hiding, I would've stuck with Sanchez for this one.

When I saw it I thought Bacuna in midfield and Richards moved to RB but guess Clark could be DM although he hasn't played there in about 4 years I think.

Would've played Grealish aswell, his quality on the ball would've worried their defence imo.

As ever in derby games first goal is crucial.

Looks like 3 at the back, unless Richards is at RB. Could be a make or break night for TS, middle of the park looks light weight to me. Hopefully Rudy will fair better against Championship players. UTV.

I am a bit perplexed by the selection. I think it is a 3-4-3 in essence, but we will see. If it is a 4 at the back, I reckon it is much more likely Bacuna is in midfield, with Lescott moving over to left back.

For me though, for the 3rd game running without Gana, we are a central midfielder light whatever you play.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Birmingham City - Match Thread

Rudy really bossed Bournemouth around when he came in so hopefully can do likewise here

The selection of Gabby is very puzzling, Sanchez for him and you could at least see what Sherwood is trying to do

Share the concerns re our midfield getting bullied without Sanchez

I can't decide what's worse:

Back three for first time, with Westwood and veretout as a midfield two (two!!)
Clark holding midfield with Westwood in there too

Either way dropping grealish and Gil means very little creativity

A little embarrassed that they've had more of the ball, have played more football and we're hoofing it to the big guy. I mean, if we win it's all fine and well, but it's a little disquieting.

It doesn't help having Clark in midfield, he doesn't know what to do there.  It also doesn't help having your "local derby Talisman" running around like madman trying to get sent off.  I also don't think hoofball is the way to go - they'll be used to that week in, week out.

We do seem to have quite a lot of footballers who don't look like very good footballers.

Or if they were once, it's been Bodymored out of them.

Footballers look a lot better if their teammates move intelligently off the ball and don't stand around marking the opposition.

Gestede has really poor ball control, I mean really poor. Gabby poor again, we look so toothless, its like tbe football under the last two managers.

Westwood poor again. He wins nothing and creates nothing.

Veretout looks ok

I am sure Tactical Tims substitutions will win us the game ;-)

Artless shite. We really have got nothing to offer. Credit to Small Heath who have left the niggle behind and have come to play football. They have a limited bunch of players but look the better team by a distance.

I have been trying to work out for a couple of weeks who Gestede reminds me of. Greg Fellows.

I am amazed at how quickly we have descended into a rabble. That first 45 at Leicester seems a long way away.

He better change things around this half or he is heading in the direction of Lambert.

Some how, some way, putting Clark in front of the two centerbacks makes our defense dumber. I really don't mean to sound harsh, but the decision making and complete void of talent is almost unbelievable.

To say I've 'enjoyed' the second half would be stretching it a bit I think, but much, much better.

Ayew and Grealish have been great.  Hopefully a confidence boost for Ayew, but it's been a while since we've had a player where the expectation when the ball is at their feet is as high as when Grealish gets it.  Three men on him in the last 10 mins, which says everything about what the opposition think of him.

And after the Leicester debacle, I've got no complaints whatsoever about our boys slowing it down from 75 mins, and heading to the corners from about 85.  Seeing it out professionally.

Job done!

Shouldnt be in the squad even if fit, same for Lescott when Okore is back

A win is a win and we should have made it a lot more comfortable considering the chances we created in the second half

Credit to Sherwood for making the changes at the break, lets not even get into the tactical clusterfuck in the first half

Gabby should be club mascot only and never get near team selection again. He has been a big part of our mediocrity.

Second half:

Clark commanding at CH

Jack, being Jack. Great quality. Glides past his man. Just needs to do it more in the danger areas

Ayew. Quality. Liked his skill and wanting the ball. He does everything Gabby doesnt

Veretout. Looked decent

Would have taken that before the game

Well good second half and a well deserved win. Ayew was real eye opener...now we saw what he is capable of. Good decision on subs as he took off the two most useless players and on came the two who changed the game. Clark not a midfielder but much better than Lescott at CB. Also impressed with Veretout when he made some runs but poor passing let him down.

A massive relief, and there were a lot of positives to take from the second half. You could see Ayew's confidence growing each time he got on the ball. Veretout, although not a major influence, got a full game under his belt, Gabby got injured and is hopefully out of contention for the foreseeable (As Monty posted, we looked such a better team without him).

The negatives? Tim's tactics - hoofball in the first half (though give him his due, he did ditch it, proving that he may not be quite as pig headed as I thought), and the emptying of midfield again, a better team surely would have dominated Westwood and Veretout, plus the usual defensive frailties of Bacuna and Amavi...

But let's not dwell on those too much tonight anyway. Hopefully this is a step forward, Gana will get fit, we'll play three in the middle of the park, a front line consisting of Gil, Grealish, Ayew, or Traore, when fit, would be pretty tasty.

And most importantly we beat the blue nose bastards.
