Title: Top Five Away Days
Post by: Ormy Droid on September 18, 2015, 09:50:30 AM
I'm sure this must have been done before by someone, but hey ho...

5 - Swindon 0 Aston Villa 0 1988 (I'm an atheist myself, but somebody was smiling down upon us that day)

4 - Man Utd 1 Aston Villa 1 - 1988 (Villa were back, Sid was back, Alan McInally wasn't a pompous fool on Sky Sports)

3 - Bradford City 2 Aston Villa 4 - 1987 (Stuart and Andy Gray made their debuts, Stuart running the show and doing a personable impression of Glenn Hoddle, he never ever got anywhere near that good ever again)

2 - Liverpool 3 Aston Villa 3 - 1986 (MacNeill's first game in charge. We'd just been thrashed by six at Forest, they were fresh off a ten goal hammering of Fulham. We were always ahead, Steve MacMahon 25 yard screamer finally levelled a pulsating game. Special mention to Merseyside Police who didn't seem to mind how many times you said 'jammy scouse fucking bastard!')

1 - Birmingham City 1 Aston Villa 2 - 1987 (Bruno's bullet header, revenge after the two previous home games against them - both of which would easily make my top five worst home games, and best of all going mental on the Tilton, the best away end of all to sing Jingle Bells in the run up to Xmas, thanks Santa!)

Wolves 0 - 4 Villa (2003/04) - And they missed a penalty too. Some Wolves' fans hadn't got tickets and were looking through a gap between the stands. We were handily informing them every time we scored

Wolves 2 - 3 Villa (about 2011) - We were rubbish in the first half and then Robbie Keane brought us to life in the second half (I quite liked the late winner Heskey got there too, we always win at Molineux)

Everton 0 - 1 Villa (1999/2000) - I think Carbone got sent off, but this game got us into the FA Cup Semi-Final. Their fans were not gracious in defeat

Liverpool 0 - 1 Villa (2014/15) - Only been there once, Anfield is crap and their fans didn't make a peep after we scored with 10 minutes gone

Reading 2 - 4 Villa (2009/10) - 2-0 down in the FA Cup Quarter-Final at half-time and their fans were singing "you might as well go home". We were brilliant in the 2nd half crushing them and guess what we sang to their fans?....

The last Villa match at The Dell was some great atmosphere despite the loss - crammed into the corner next to that crazy triangular terrace.

Sheffield Wednesday 1-4 1975 we were no longer shit then.

Arsenal 2-0 1981       enough said.

Can't remember the year but I remember Newcastle players fighting between themselves and at least 80% of their fans leaving before the end.

Everton 1990. The best ever.
Plymouth 1987. One of those trips where everything went right, from the train times to the result.
Forest 1989. The day H&V took off.
Southampton 1987. So bad it was brilliant.
Sheffield United 2011. Poured onto the last train - the eighties revisited.

Sheff Wed 91 - Big Ron's Return
Sheff Wed 92 - Dalian's stunners
Man Utd 89 or 90 - Ormondroyd's equaliser
Spuds CC Cup QF 94 - pissing down rain
Arsenal 91 - Platt in goal, utter shit, but amusing
Forest 93 - The Lord descended from the clouds

1982 Anderlecht 0-0 - the best Villa away day ever, anywhere. Nothing else has ever come close.
1981 Leicester 2-4 We were great, unbelievable support and the Boggies went against their DNA and beat Ipswich. I thought we had peaked at the right time, reinforced by the win over Albion 4 days later.
1987 Blues 1-2 a combination of winning a derby on my birthday, booze, women and drugs. And the most scared I have ever been at football in the crush outside the Tilton ( took us 60 minutes to get in)
2001 Liverpool 1-3 taking my nephew to his first away game and numpty Houllier deciding chat Michael Owen, fresh after scoring a hat trick against Germany 7 days before, was only worthy of a place on the bench.
1982 0-1 Blues away. Down from Sheffield for the weekend with a mate from Newcastle. Barmy shenanigans all weekend, propa nawty stuff around town and booze filled hallucinations with us somehow waking up in Coventry at 4am. To this day, none the wiser.
1997 0-0 Bordeaux. A dreary game, realising Collymore was a waste, but an 18 hour session involving booze, dance and some very interesting local ladies.

November 27th 1971' Oldham 0 Villa 6 - Andy Lochead hat trick , Bruce Rioch 2 and I think Willie Anderson scored the other. Jim Cumbes' debut and I don't think he had to do anything. It poured down with rain and although the attendance is given at around 12, 500 it seemed that the only people in the ground with 15 minutes to go were Villa fans. I still think of that game as everything was perfect, I was 14, my dear Dad was alive, bless him, and we went with my brother, my Dads mate Ralph and his son Neil Thomas. Special treat on the way home was to stop at the Motorway Services for a cup of tea and some chips. Great memories.

You are quite right Ian.  I was one of those that posted 4-1.  I thought that it was 4-0 as I was typing but I honestly couldn't remember, such is my memory these days.  I was scratching my head trying to remember when it was during the game and just couldn't remember.  I just took the previous poster's word for it.

One thing I do remember, due to the traffic I didn't get home until the early hours.  Very happy mind.

1) Everton 3 Aston Villa 3 1990  -  Teams that blow the league title these days are seen as failures and their fans go into deep depression and flood radio shows with tales of woe and demand that heads roll. Make no mistake, Villa blew it in 89-90. But, the Villa faithful used this dead rubber finale to celebrate the great side that Graham Taylor had assembled. Only 12 months earlier, we had survived relegation by the skin of our teeth after a torrid first season back in the top flight. The season that followed was nothing short of a miracle. The Villa fans showed their appreciation by turning Goodison into a massive party. The singing didn't stop throughout and even went on at half time, to the amazement of the Everton fans. The game was great, but the absolute highlight was Taylor coming over to the fans at the end. The man was so humble and reluctant to hog the limelight, but the Villa faithful wouldn't let him go without taking a bow. It was a fantastic sight and a cherished memory.

2) Stoke 1 Villa 3 2013 - Away days are rare for me these days. Too expensive, too much hassle and yes, I have to admit, I find myself tutting and shaking my head at the behaviour of our younger contingent at times. This game though, turned me into an utter loon. Maybe I was overcome by the importance of the occasion or the constant goading of the Stoke fans stood about ten yards away from me, but when Lowton and then Benteke scored, I became this whole other person. Screaming like a banshee, jumping up and down on my seat, grabbing total strangers for a hug and making not to kind gestures to the Stoke faithful, all of whom couldn't look at us anyway and stood rigid with eyes firmly front. I'm still very hazy on the post match drinking details, to this day.

3) Sheff Wed 2 Aston Villa 3 1991 -  Quick return for Big Ron after he left them in a great position and a league cup win. Suddenly he was a judas and public enemy no.1. We had a brand new team who were on the ropes after 20 mintues. 2-0 down and looking doomed, big Cyrille Regis grabs a header before the break and Dalian and Staunton completed an amazing comeback. Many sulky and moody Yorshiremen after the match. Snigger.

4) Newcastle 0 Villa 3 2005  -  Sometimes, some of the best days are ones you're not expecting. A week after trudging out of the Sty after another Sorenson horror show, we went up to Toonland, fully expecting to get turned over, so it was a case of making the best of it. What followed was a legendary piss up, followed by a bizarre 90 minutes in which the opposition and fans self destructed in front of our very eyes. Bowyer and Dyer decided to have a punch up with each other and as Villa cruised to a 3-0 lead, the Newcastle fans started to lamp each other, much to the amusement of the Villa faithful.

5) Reading 0 Villa 2 1988 - There were many fun away days that season, but this was my favourite. Didn't stop laughing all day from the moment we boarded the old football 'special' trains. Everything that followed was perfect. The drinking, the match, the banter. It was a great day to be alive. Lovely.

Most of my away trips were in the BFR and Little era so - and in no particular order

Norwich 1-2 Villa  Xmas 1993  Long range winner from Saunders, Norwich played Another One Bites The Dust over the tannoy when they scored!
Spurs 3-4 1994  Jim Barron care-taker match, 3-0 then 3-3 then 4-3 Villa in the last minute.
Wimbledon 2-3 Villa 1992 for obvious reasons
Sheff Wed 1-2 Villa 1995  Deano double, great night in Sheffield with my Sheffield relatives later that evening.
Arsenal 1-2 Villa 1993 Townsend later winner when Arsenal should have been out of sight

Swindon 88 - First away days don't get much better, as well as getting promotion I got Alan McInally coming to shake my hand and have a little chat amid the celebrations (I was 11 and pinned up against the fence), and the nice copper collected all the coins that had somehow rained onto the pitch and handed them to me.

Everton 2000 - shit game, on the telly, bonfire night and not the biggest following we've ever took. Got piss wet through in the lower bullens, a few lads in front started going through a repertoire of old songs, and it may well have been the rebirth of "my old man". We joined in for the entirety of the match, which passed without incident till Paul Merson smacked in thunderbastard in the last minute, which was celebrated like we'd won the Champions League.

Spurs 1994, the 3-4 game, was a great trip. I think we went with Premier and landed at the Northumberland Arms. I remember feeling very drunk, and the surreal events that unfolded didn't help sober me up. The bastard walk back to the coaches did though.

Inter 1990 0-3 - probably not a lot of peoples choice but it was my first European trip, as a 13 year old, and aside from the bloody game it had the lot. Going to the San Siro after we'd been glued to the World Cup, the players they had, stopping at the border to get body searched by bloody armed guards, hookers in the streets, the ground looking like a spaceship as we pulled up to, all 75,000 of them whistling when we had the ball, and then jumping up and down together and making the stadium shake, it was just a massive sensory overload. Marvellous.
Sheffield Wednesday 1991 - To win, like that, on the opening day when you're filled with optimism and you've got loads of new players to watch, with the circumstances of the manager moving, and with an army of Villa fans there is bloody hard to top.

I was at Everton in 1990, but was a bit heartbroken because I'd been convinced we'd win the league.

Right off the top of my head -

Rotterdam
Swindon
Everton
Sheffield Wednesday

All so memorable I don't even have to name the year as everybody will just know. Then I would go for White Hart Lane in 1989/1990. The night I was sure we would go on to win the league.

Ashley Young at Everton. I doubt I'll ever see the like again. Unbelievable.

Everton FA Cup 2000. I remember the semi final draw was done at half time and we knew we'd got Bolton. That'll be easy.

Newcastle 3-0. Goals, sendings off, great stuff.

Boro  05/06. Just like watching Brazil in a dog of a season. One of their fans threw his season ticket at McLaren; few months later he was England boss.

Anfield 2001. Unexpected delight, away end going barmy.

My first three have all been covered.
Everton 3-3 (1990).
Sheffield Weds 3-2 (Big Ron).
Spurs 4-3 (Big Ron sacked week before).

Then:
Albion 2-0 (FA Cup 1990, Daley winner)
Deportivo La Coruna (1993, game nothing special, but a fun trip).

The Spurs 3-4 game, we arrived late and found we were 1-0 up on arrival as we were walking down the steps to our seats we went 2 up (dalian I think) don't think we ever made our actual seats til the second half.
What a brilliant game that was . Have to say Klinsmann was sensational in the second half.

5A  Any win at the sty (since my first visit there in 1968)

5 - Blackpool 1975 (didn't get to Hillsborouh the following Wednesday)

4 - Wembley 1975

3 - Old Trafford 1977

2 - Highbury 1981

as I did not go to many away games as I played football myself during the 80's and 90's but here are my favourite 5 in no particular order.

2000 Spurs - 2-4 and 3 goals to grace any goal of the season, Dublin (2) Carbone and Alan Wright.

1978 Spurs - again and my first away game, ticker tape to greet the players O.Ardiles and R.Villa home debut ruined by Evans, Little, Shelton and Gregory.

1986 Coventry - a great day out and although it all got very unsavoury at the end with their cowardly supporters including the walk back to the car, Bruno made it a day to remember.

1980 Cambridge United - not technically an away game for me, but it was great to see that Villa team down the Abbey and all the Cambridge fans telling me it was great to see such a very good side play, it made me very proud. Terry Donovan the scorer

2006 Arsenal  - Mellberg scoring the first competitive goal at the Emirates and all the positivity surrounding the Villa, Lerner and O'Neill...just a brilliant day out with my Brummie mates.

In no particular order.

Arsenal 1-3 Villa - opening day of the season in 2013, absolute scenes in the away end when 'Tony Moon' aka Luna got our third on the counter right at the end.

Liverpool 2-2 Villa - around 2008. Midweek game, losing 1-0 offering nothing, Harewood comes off the bench to score one and set another up (though may have been credited as an own goal from memory), slightly dampened by Crouchy getting a late equaliser.

Stoke 1-3 Villa - 2013. The Lowton screamer in front of the away fans when we needed 3 points at crunch time in the season.

Everton 2-3 Villa - around 2008. Ashley Young, think we all know the rest.

Liverpool 1-2 Villa - FA Semi 2015 Wembley, what a day. Happy Birthday to you (Stevie G).

A few games away to Small Heath and Smethwick have been mentioned. It must be something about the atmosphere of evening games as some of both my favourite away days and favourite derbies are the two league cup wins at Albion in the eighties, the first one of which one was my first visit to The Hawthorns (I remember Clive 'The Book' Thomas was ref) and the two league cup wins at the sty in the late eighties and early nineties. Along with the league win at Albion in the early days of SGT.

Wasn't Stoke in the title season 1-1? I saw us play out a 0-0 draw there in the promotion season. At least I don't think there were any goals. It was without doubt the worst view I have ever had for a game.

I remember the "win the league, win the league game at the sty take2 in Feb/March 1981
Tremendous atmosphere on the old South Bank - didn't Andy Gray miss a sitter for them in that match?

1977/78  1-3 away there was as I remember on a Tuesday night and their win kept them in the old first division and cost us a place in the EUFA Cup.  I was in the old enclosure with the girlfriend I was with at the time and I remember it "kicking off" outside - I remember walking past the south bank and heard a couple of Wolves idiots plotting to ambush our supporters as they came out.

1980/81  Stoke away - as you say - at the time a precious point, when a draw was worth more than what is today.

78/79 ?- wolves away, I the old crooked stand a Friday night game for some reason. My first ever away 1-3 loss. Carradous for us.
80/81 Stoke 0-0 Victoria Grd , not a classic but a previous point on the way to the title. Stoke being Stoke it kicked off outside.

Wasn't Stoke in the title season 1-1? I saw us play out a 0-0 draw there in the promotion season. At least I don't think there were any goals. It was without doubt the worst view I have ever had for a game.

No Damo, it was definitely a 0-0.  I remember it well.  I expected us to win it.  How times have changed.

I remember it being on Easter Monday as well - the previous Saturday we'd beaten Nottm Forest to regain top spot - anyone recall the "in the car, in the car, in the car" and Shilton's wife, can you hear us on the box" being aimed at Peter Shilton as we attacked the Holte End ?

I do remember Gray missing a sitter. Wasn't one of their players stretchered off too ? Or was that they year before ? I remember a game where Ormsby and John Richards I think both got red carded for fighting

I've just checked the Stoke v Villa game in the old First Division title winning season.  I categorically stated that the score was 0-0.  Well guess what? I was friggin wrong again.  As others quite correctly stated, the score was 1-1.

The sendings-off were the year before, and I think the broken leg was the year after.

Thanks. I remember the ambulance more or less driving onto the pitch, there was that much room between that new stand (at the time) and the actual pitch it was unreal

Living up here in Stafford, Wolves really are the enemy, they're all over the place and this thread has taken me back to our games there - late 70s - early 80s - when living in Great Barr, as I was at the time - they were as insignificant as the rags are up here now.

If I remember correctly - they came back up in 1977.  Our subsequent games that I went to at that 'orrible stadium as I remember.

77-78 Lost 1-3 - that kept them up

78-79  Won there 4-0 I think - a very poor Wolves side as I remember

79-80 - 1 - 1  A tremendous goal by a young Gary Shaw.  A lot of tension as Andy Gray had only just left us for them (I've disliked them with a passion ever since) Richards and Ormsby went up for a ball on half way and as I remember Richards elbowed Ormsy and B.O. just landed a right hook and floored him.

80-81 - 1 - 0 The win the league, win the league" game

81 - 82 My favourite seasons against them - beat them 3 times in 2 weeks as sandwiched in between a 3-2 home win and 1-0 ( I think) away win - in a 2 legged League Cup tie was a 3-0 win in the league - I believe this game was the incident between Tony Morley and Peter Daniel.  As I said we beat them 3-0 in the league on the Saturday and I remember "we'll be back, we'll be back, we'll be back on Tuesday night" - can't believe I went there twice in the space of 3 days !

I think they went down that year and I think 1983 - 84 was the second live televised game when ITV took over live football on Sunday afternoons - I'm sure that was a 1-1 draw and I don't think I've been there since.

Spurs 3-0 Villa (2014) - sometimes a crap performance doesn't matter.
Sheffield United 1-3 Villa (2011) - great day out with a fantastic away following.
Villa 2-1 Liverpool (FA Cup) - I'll never feel like I did at full time again.
Norwich 1-2 Villa (2013) - just awesome.  Gabby actually played to his potential that day.
Burnley 1-1 Villa (2014) - a top day out, and a large away following.

I was at almost every game mentioned on this thread - none of them meant quite as much to those in attendance as Kevin Phillips shuttin those tramps up after our defeats and draws of the recent derbies.

Forget the year but I do remember a game at Everton in the days of Merse.

The match was dire and it p*ssed down the entire match. Had 0-0 all over it until the 90th minute when Merse spotted the Everton keeper off his line and lobbed him from about 40 yards.

Didn't even notice the torrential rain as we walked back through Stanley Park.

I think you are right and the 1-1 in 1983 was the second live televised game when they started showing live league games for the first time. I seem to remember Withe scoring for us and a guy called Rudge (Dale?) for them. The first live game had been Spurs v Forest a couple of weeks before I think.
