Real blow not to have Grealish or Traore today

No Traore, Grealish or Gabby at all.

Would have liked to see Gil make a start.

Not sure about this.

Not a huge amount of creativity in that team, shame Grealish/Adama are injured.

Doesn't look like too much guile in that team. Hope were not just launching it to Gestede. Important that he's not isolated and Sinclair works close to him. Make us proud boys. UTV.

Packed the midfield, looking for Bacuna ( midfield ) and Scotty too hotty to supply the amo for Gestede.  Yes we lack the spark of a Grealish or the pace and skills of Traore but Gil could come on and nice to see Libor on the bench too.

Is that a 4-3-3, then?

                    Guzan

Hutton   Richards   Clark   Amavi

                  Sanchez
            Gana    Westwood

Bacuna                         Sinclair

                  Gestede

Big onus on Westwood today. It's about time he was pushed forward and imposed himself more in the final third. He's got to be the playmaker today. No one else will do it.
Also a big day for Sinclair. He's got to follow up tuesdays display and deliver again.

A big shame about Grealish and Traore.

It's the midfield where Villa are lacking-very one dimensional, unless Gueye is given license to roam. I would have liked to see Veretout instead of Westwood, with Sanchez protecting the defence. Gil should be starting this. Hopefully he'll come on at half time and inspire us if we're not playing very well.

Still, no Gabby which is encouraging for many.

I think it'll be 0-0, but hopefully, I'm wrong.

Come on Villa!!

Not sure what Sherwood is thinking with that line up. The midfield four looks very flat. Maybe he's expecting Sunderland to park the bus as they did last week at Swansea. Our attack will probably consist of hoofs up to Gestede or relying on Bacuna and Amavi to get a few crosses in.

I expect we'll see Gil come on later when we're struggling for ideas. Would have loved to have seen Grealish running at these.

It's difficult to say, what with not knowing the full extent of the illness in the squad, but if possible I would have played;

                   Guzan

Hutton   Richards   Clark   Amavi

             Gana      Sanchez

       Gil        Veretout       Sinclair

                   Gestede

Mind you, hoofs up to Gestede may well be quite effective against this lot.

Dont think Ive ever seen Bacuna play well on the right of midfield. At least we will have pace on the flanks but playing all three of Sanchez, Westwood and Gueye together is nonsense. Either Gil or Veretout should be starting and possibly both.

Yeah, this is what I would expect. Bacuna to chuck in some crosses, Sinclair coming inside and Amavi providing our left-sided width. If we're struggling for creativity, Gil and/or Veretout off the bench.

Let's see if Gueye is allowed to play his preferred box to box role. We definitely need some attacking threat through the middle.

Don't know about the illness constraints but that team looks awfully low on attacking quality and creativity. Sunderland have lens and Defoe where we have Sinclair and bacuna

Hopefully the gestede route pays off then

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland - Match Thread

Its a strange lineup but we can only assume the illnesses and injury have played a part in the selection. Grealish would have been nailed on to play were he fit and Troare probably.

I think the key for me today is our bench. Can Gil, Veretout or Ayew provide something should they be called upon? Or even Joe Cole? 15 minutes to potentially turn things might not be beyond him.

My initial reaction was the same. I had been thinking of starting a thread along the line of "do you think we will ever see Trarore, Gil and Grealish selected in a starting lineup in the PL?". Now we are playing one of the worst teams in our league, Traore and Grealish are injured, and still no Gil.

The only thing I can say is that we have no idea who is and who has been affected by this illness. It could be that Gil had it and isn't feeling 100% yet as these bugs knock two shades of shit out of you.

It looks like a bit of a patching job to me and not how Tim would have liked to have set out on balance. We'll see.

I'm not sure what Bacuna has done to earn A) A new contract or B) To be playing in Midfield. The guy is undoubtably talented but one of the laziest players I've seen in a Villa shirt and I've seen Nigel Callaghan..... 1-1 today.

I mean, if you;re going to have someone in the free role, floating about at the top end of the pitch, you'd choose Gil, wouldn't you? If Grealish is unavailable?

Maybe Bacuna can drop back and help out defensively a bit more, I suppose.

Occasionally Bacuna does something good, or something very classy, as demonstrated by his goals at the club (which are becoming distant memories). Other times he looks like he's never seen a football in his life. He occasionally looks like a kitten with a ball of yarn.

A bit sluggish, Gestede, isn't he?

If we can get to the byline and whip crosses 'back' if you see what I mean, then I think he'll score loads. If we cross in from midway in their half, I'm not sure he's very effective.

With Sinclair and especially Traore, though, we should be able to provide more of the former.

But Sunderland are disgracefully bad, if we get any head of steam up it could be another 6-1 type scoreline.

Gestede is having a mare. But he's one of those players who's probably not going to offer much if he's not scoring. Ultimately I think he'll be a better impact player than regular starter. But we also need to be a bit more imaginitive about how we get the ball to him.

Not watching so cannot comment too much, however with the team as it is, you'd hope we can make some really positive substitutions in the second half without losing any momentum.  Gil looks an ideal swap for Bacuna and Vertout for any of the midfield three.  Ayew probably needs a run too.

That is a proper strikers goal. Brilliant cross and in absolutely the right spot to finish. Mind you Sunderland are utterly gash, and they have to be thanking their lucky stars Grealish and Traore aren't attacking the flanks. There's more goals in here for us, we just need to keep at them. Not a bad first half at all.

Talksport saying Kaboul is Mackems MOM. Is this is a damning indictment of Gestedes performance?

Gestede hasnt been great alright but improved in last 5-10 mins of the half.

Super second goal for us, Sinclair keeps getting in those positions. Great play from Gueye and a superb assist from Amavi

Wouldnt take much from us to beat these by 4 or 5 today.

Hutton having a decent return to the side, doesnt always produce quality when in good positions but has pushed on well
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland - Match Thread
Post by: supertom on August 29, 2015, 03:52:03 PM
Gestede has been getting a little better in the last 10 minutes. Get a good ball in and he'll have some joy I think. If not I'd bring Libor on at 60 minutes.

Sinclair has played well. Great movement for the goal. I know people suggest playing him up front in a central role but I think the key to Scotty ghosting defenders is coming in deep from the left.

Gana and Sanchez look very good in midfield. Amavi has been quality too. I'd like Westwood to drive forward with the ball more and up his tempo. He needs to be threading balls from outside the penalty box, but he's still too deep and laboured at times. He's made a couple of good runs though.
Bacuna has struggled. If we bring on Gil, he could have a field day out here. Hutton has played well too. He should be first choice. He's tougher and more disciplined on the right. I think playing Amavi and Bacuna as fullbacks is asking for trouble.

I really do like Richards too. Very impressed with him so far this season.

2-1 less than deserved. It's been very frustrating first half. If only we were better with the last ball or had better options than Gestede, Bacuna and Hutton. Guzan at fault with their goal however once again error by Amavi in giving free kick.

It's tempting to 'twist' at this point. I'd love to see Gil come on and see if he could create just a little more in Bacuna's role…but then Bacuna IS working very hard, and we're winning, and fairly comfortably.

I think I might just bring on Ayew for Gestede.

As well as we've played, you have to take into account how crap Sunderland are.

We should look good against this level of opposition, otherwise we'll be in the bottom 4 or 5, so we need to take the opportunity to score  a hat full.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland - Match Thread
Post by: Rudy Can't Fail on August 29, 2015, 03:56:50 PM
I was about to have a moan about our forwards, neither contributed anything in that half other than a well taken penalty. Then up pops Sinclair with a well timed run, the type we've seen Gabby do so many times in the past and suddenly it's 2-1.

Part of the problem is despite getting in loads of crosses, they're generally high balls, which plays to Sunderland's defences only strength or over hit. Improve them and we'll slaughter them.

I hope we see Gil on, preferably for Bacuna or Westwood.

I think most teams who are losing get the hair dryer at half time and come out with a kick up the arse....it's standard. I'm just not a fan of every goal conceded is down to the manager not doing this or that. He's young, inexperienced....this is expected but I'm not blaming Tim for the goals conceded.

If you think that the manager is not responsible for the bad defending of the players that he selected in the starting XI you have a poor opinion of the coach's role....
Huh!

Players being humans, you know, like humans make mistakes, you pass the buck and blame someone else for an individual mistakes!?

Yes he's picked the back four, I think 99% of us would of picked the same....are we at fault for a misplaced pass and player turning Clark inside out? No...we're not.

Gestede has offered very little today, or we haven;t played to his strengths, but what is the point of having a strong bench of we're not going to use it? Surely now is the time for trying Ayew?

I also would have picked him in the starting XI as I rate him, but he is being very poor this season so far.
One thing is an individual, occasional, mistake, another is a defender that doesn't know the defensive movements and position.
A coach is supposed to teach these things, but seeing the goals that we use to concede even to crap opponents, I begin to think that he is not doing this.

I think Clark has improved a lot the last season, but any player fucks up from time to time....it's no biggie and you certainly can't lay the blame at Sherwood for that.

That's ridiculous in my opinion considering Clark has been pretty solid so far.

Well we are playing better football than at pretty much any time under Lambert last season. We just can't finish. We have much less settled side than any other side in the league. As disappointing as this would be there are positives to draw.

Well, we've scored twice and created other chances, we've dominated possession, and the new boys look like they're starting to understand each other a bit better. Our movement has been quite good in the final third. If Clark had cleaned out Lens instead of doing an impression of a little girl, we'd be looking at a good win.

I think Clark cost us the 3 points with that defending. Even though he started with a bad pass, Gil should have come on earlier. Bacuna frustrates me. So did Gestede today, but I will give him time... Gana and Amavi look good. And glad to see Sinclair score again, he is much better than Gabby.

Well I actually enjoyed that. A masterful midfield defensive performance from Carlos, great energy from Gana, Amavi can certainly cross a dangerous ball and two more goals from Scott. Pity we missed four presentable second half chances but as famous ex manager once said

We go again!!

Carles was a significent addition as well.
