We either draw these games 0-0 or thrash them. Back six picks itself.

I'd ideally go: Westwood gueye - Adama grealish Sinclair - gestede

If Adama is out i think he might retain the diamond, with Sinclair up top along with gestede. But I'd go with width for this one.

Post by: Risso on August 27, 2015, 08:49:01 AM
I think we need to stay unbeaten in the next three games, starting with a win against Sunderland.  My worry is that we don't really appear to have a settled striker or settled way to play.  Gestede is very different to the likes of Ayew and Sinclair, who are more secondary strikers/wingers.  But they look utterly inept, so I'll go for a routine 2-0 win.  A loss would be very, very concerning indeed.

It will be interesting to see how far we've come since the corresponding fixture last December (0-0), think this was the game Tom Fox had Tim Sherwood with him as a guest.

It's times like this we could really do with some good set piece delivery and consistent defending. We had countless routine victories under oneill on that basis. Despite very limited attacking play at times

Get jack on the corners and get rust, Richards and Clark really attacking it

Bacuna       Richards      Clark     Amavi

                 Sanchez        Gueye

Gil                      Grealish          Sinclair

                         Gestede

Subs - Bunn, Baker, Hutton, Westwood, Veretout, Ayew, Agbonlahor

I'd be a bit worried about Gil tracking back in that position, but I'd have him in over Ayew.

Sunderland always play 10 at the back at Villa Park, so 1-0 Villa.

I think we have more success at their ground as they have to try and attack a bit, something they're not comfortable with.

they are staggeringly bad at the back, and we should know all there is to know about comical defences but they have really taken it on and made it their own show

we must win this, and we should , I'm predicting a Villa win as we will surely have to much for them in attack, 3-0

when you consider Gabby completely took the piss out of them at their place, it tells you immediately how hideous they are. Defoe is good form so our defenders will need to be on their toes to restrict his chances. But if we attack them they'll crumble. Put me down for 3-1.

Its hard to see anything other than 3 points from this game...they are woefully bad and we have a team of players that have been mainly rested and hungry for a win after 2 defeats on the bounce. I hope it doesn't turn into one of those frustrating afternoons where we have loads of possession but unable to convert chances.

Taking a young lady to her first ever football match so I hoping for a good result and great atmosphere.

Villa win: 3-1

It must be truly horrible watching Sunderland. Like watching us the last five years, except for much, much longer than that, and with the added "bonus" of actually managing to climb into bed with relegation, rather than just occasionally pinching its arse like we've done.

Their fans seem to love that "LOOK AT ME! I'M SO ANGRY I AM LEAVING AT HALF TIME!" thing, though.

I used to go to a few of their games with my Mackem best mate at university, when they were in the third division. There's a sort of depressing fug of misery about that club that has been there for decades, which is a shame, as there's really nothing not to like about them.

Actually, thinking about it, there is. The fact they named their new stadium after another, famous stadium elsewhere, and that they adopted that shitty "black cats" nickname, which is meaningless.

Two uncharacteristic outbreaks of nu-football from a normally traditional club, there.

EDIT downscale that to one, the black cats thing has a historical connection, albeit a bit tenuous.

Regardless of how poor the rest of their team are, Defoe really seems to have rolled-back the years. Some of his link-up play was top class (albeit against Exeter) in midweek, and he's still one of the best finishers around. We really need Micah Richards to be on his game on Saturday.

Right back is a tough call for me, Hutton and Bacuna were both poor in their last games this week but I'd probably stick with Leo given his attacking play is better. I can see Crespo making that position his own soon though.

Pretty much spot on if Traore isn't fit...we've got some big games coming up so I wouldn't risk him if his ankle is not 100%.

Westwood and Veretout to come on in the second half for the tiring Sanchez and Gil respectively; Ayew to replace Gestede just to give him some game time once the result is in the bag.

Alternatively stick with the diamond with Sinclair alongside Gestede...

                            Guzan

Bacuna       Richards      Clark     Amavi

                         Sanchez

              Gil                      Gueye

                         Grealish

                Gestede          Sinclair

It may be too early for Gil still so TS may prefer Westwood or Veretout on the right.

I'm not expecting an avalanche of goals. Not that one ever does as a Villa fan.

The last five home matches against Sunderland. It is relatively easy to spot the "outlier" in this list.

14/15: 0-0
13/14: 0-0
12/13: 6-1
11/12: 0-0
10/11: 0-1

That one in the Houllier year was particularly horrific, I recall. It was midweek, freezing fucking cold, and we were absolute awful.

Wasn't the fixture last year also truly horrible? The Prince William match, I think?

I'd imagine Sunderland will be coming here for a point rather than going for a win so we may need to be patient...an early goal is needed to open it up a bit.

A very strong one (in the military as well).

I have tremendous sympathy for Sunderland fans. I don't think they are more walk out prone than any other clubs and their "miserable bastards with cutting humour " culture fits in well with my miserable brummie nature :)

Anyway we should win, we really really should win. Now is the perfect time to play them. Ref or fluke aside there is no getting around this result for Sherwood. I expect 3 points.

Bloody hell, JP, Sinclair score a couple of tap-ins and squeezed through a penalty and suddenly you think he's going to score ten.

I like Doorbell's line up providing we can get players into the box. The idea of Sanchez or Gueye giving the ball to Traore, Gil or Grealish looks an exciting prospect.

I'd be more inclined to give Ayew the impact role instead of Gabby. Hopefully by which time we'll be 10-0 up and Ayew will look a bit more composed on the pitch. The sooner he gets his first goal the better.

Sinclair, Grealish and late Gestede header.

With the right team selection and tactics we should win this at a canter, they are not a good team. Be interesting to see how we line up, pretty hard to not add my voice to the clamour to drop Gabby and give either Sinclair or Kozak a chance to join Gestede amoungst the goals. Hopefully we'll get to see more of Grealish, Gil, Adama and Veretout as well. 2-0 Villa.

I think this is based on the 2-2 at the Olbiun when Lambert had to keep 3 players off until the 60th minute and we were 0-2 down. Of course Gabby didn't score that night....

This one has got "game of football" written all over it. If you asked me before the game, I would snap your hand off for a 3-0 demonstration of gelling, getting up to speed, tactical wizardry and "Get the fuck in Villa!"

Also, I am back to school on Monday and depressed enough as it is.

He's giving Adama until the last minute to see if he's fit, so whether he makes this game or not it can't be too serious of an injury which is a relief.

We have a talent for making ordinary > poor teams look good, and we'll need to break that cycle if we want to stop arsing about at the lower end of the table.  It's taken us a while to dig ourselves into this rut though, so maybe we're comfortable with it.

0-0 or 1-0 to them.

Could be a smokescreen to keep the Cats guessing. I hope for:
                            Guzan
Hutton.    Richards.          Clark.      Amavi
                     Gueye.    Veretout
Traore.                  Grealish.            Gil
                            Sinclair

I suspect though that Ashley will play and we may be less attack minded. Perhaps Sanchez in for Veretout

Quote
Tim Sherwood isn't giving up on the chance of Adama Traore being fit for the weekend clash with Sunderland.

Traore hobbled off against Notts County on Tuesday with an ankle problem.

Sherwood told the media this morning that the exciting young forward hasn't trained since - and won't train today.

But he's keeping his fingers crossed that he might be available for Saturday's game with the Black Cats.

Sherwood also revealed that two players - who he didn't want to name - are suffering with the flu, after a sickness bug hit the training ground over the last few days.

Again, the boss is hoping the pair will declare themselves fit for the Wearsiders encounter.

He said: "Adama has not trained since Tuesday - and he won't train today.

"But we will give him every chance to be fit. But we aren't going to know until tomorrow morning.

"He took a few kicks the other night. He tried to carry on but he's a marked man.

"We have a couple of players who are not here today because they are ill. There's a sickness bug going round the training ground.

"They aren't well - the doc is doing some overtime now.

"We are hoping they will be okay tomorrow."

Once our forwards know the areas to run into when Grealish or Traore drag that ball across the box we'll be scoring a good number of goals. No full back ever has enjoyed a winger really having a go at them, getting outside or cutting inside and delivering a low fizzing cross. Both of these lads can do that and if we get intelligent forwards or even like Sinclair who seem to find the right spot in the box we'll look so much healthier and a legitimate threat every time we attack.

There was a bug before we played Arsenal at home last year. We dominated that for the first 20 minutes with Szczesny keeping them in the match.

Once they scored we fell to pieces though, losing 3-0.

Taking a look at the training pics on the website it seems our defenders and strikers were all training. Didn't spot a midfielder apart from Ghana. Not that you'd expect everyone to be featured

Really could do with grealish for this one. Plus Sinclair and at least one other fully fit central midfielder

---------------Sinclair---------
--------------Gestede-----------

Hutton to hold his position, Sinclair to play further forward

Kozak changed the game on Tuesday when he came on. He battled with the CB`s and that created space for Sinclair and Grealish-Gil he also had a brilliant shot saved by their keeper. Think Traore will get 20 mins if we are struggling. We need to persist with Veretout as he looks like he can be a top player when up to the pace .........

I thought Kozak changed the game on Tuesday. That second or so he created by holding ghe ball allowed a dynamic midfield opportunity to play in advanced positions and a tiring county defence could not keep up. Would like to see it again against a very poor and static Sunderland defence

If we're without adama, gabby, jack that's a lot of pace and creativity gone. Especially with the form of gestede and ayew to date

A diamond formation with Westwood, Ghana AND Sanchez, with our remaining forward options, might be pretty narrow and easy to defend against. I like Gil but I think he's got better every week he hasn't played!

And was unlucky not to score. Even though he has been injured for a long time. He has a very good goal scoring rate. I would like to see him start. A lot depends on if Grealish/Traore is fit. Bacuna to start as we have got to attack these today .......

My thoughts too. Amazing how not having Traore and Grealish available makes the team look that much weaker. I'm starting to think we're a bit light on wingers/wide players compared to any other role.
