Same old same old.
-
Sigh.
-
I'm never doing Match Threads again.
-
We need a new keeper, new right back and striker before the window closes.
-
really upset with this result. hard to believe the lack of changes, and hard to believe that grealish, gabby and rudy are fit to play all 90.
-
I have seen nothing in three games that makes me think we are any better off now than last season.
No flashes of good play, just the normal lack of creativity and guile going forward.
Rubbish
-
At 1-1-, and three games into the season, I thought, fuck it, go for the win, does a defeat really matter at this stage? Amavi went for it, if he beat his man, we were away. He didn't, and we fucked up. It happens. I'm happy he went to go for it, but obviously disappointed at the outcome.
Still not convince TS is the man...
-
Does any other team concede as many late goals to lose games as we do?
-
How Gabby stayed on for the 2nd half let alone the whole game i will never know. Its a shame but i am really starting to dislike him, not his fault, manager picks the team.
-
Bacuna, Guzan, Gabby, Gestede shite.
Sanchez, Traore, Grealish pretty good.
The rest of them did alright. Sherwood has made some big mistakes with regards to subs or lack thereof two games in a row now. Worrying.
-
We will win games like this as the season progresses. Naivety and stupidity cost us this time round and hopefully will not be repeated.
-
Thickie Villa are back. Although, in truth, they never went away. Fucking brainlessness ensured we threw away the match sucessfully. We can be real proud of the dunces.
-
we're in for more disappointment unless some real money is put in between now and the transfer deadline. There's the basis of a good team in there, it just needs a bit more
-
Hmmmm not great. Pressure is on to win next week. Amavi needs to learn about giving the ball away carelessly.
-
The extra training paying dividends then.
-
Traore had them trembling. What do we do? Don't give him the ball at every available opportunity.Thick.
-
Sign Austin and another RB and a class DCM ASAP.
-
With so many players coming in it could turn into a season of not knowing what his best side is. I can help him with one position however. Get Gabby out of the team.
-
Had a spell when Adama came on - could have nicked it then, otherwise a draw would have been fair result as the second half was quite even. Not sure why it took so long for the disallowed goal to be sorted, but right result. Just a shame the goal came from a mistake - hopefully that won't stop Amavi trying to be positive.
Agbonlahor..... Why?
-
Naive = Sherwood.
He needs to wise up pretty fast, Gabby and Bacuna were absolute gash and he keeps them on for 94 minutes.
He also took off the wrong player again.
-
TS is getting some criticism, but he did buy and bring on Traore, who surely needs to start next game.
-
Disjointed, conceded sloppy goals and Gabby shite.
All understandable early in the season with the new team. I don't think we have been far behind in any of the games so far.
Disappointing but nothing like under Lambert!
-
Hoof ball is back.
Tactically clueless second half.
It's going to take much longer to get this lot to gell, if it ever happens.
-
Sign Austin and another RB and a class DCM ASAP.
Yeah, because class players always come looking to play for us.
-
Guzan was good for a lot of the game, but I have no idea what he, Bacuna and Amavi were doing at the end there.
Clark gave us a nice reminder of Old Clark for the goal. He's been a lot more solid, but that was weak.
The midfield was fine, actually, but the lack of anything ahead of them rather limited their options, and Sanchez going off really left them undermanned in there. Good to see Jack back, though, and Traore looks hilariously good. Gana (before he tired), Westwood and the aforementioned Carlos all looked like real players in the first half as well.
Up front, what to say. It wasn't Rudy's day - with the Palace behemoths denying him anything much in the air he looked uncomfortable, and he didn't offer much movement or touch on the ground. As for Gabby - well, Sherwood needs a bucket of iced water over the head or something, because how he didn't realise that Gabby was putting in one of the worst individual displays of the season so far by any player in the division I do not know.
-
Thickie Villa are back. Although, in truth, they never went away. Fucking brainlessness ensured we threw away the match sucessfully. We can be real proud of the dunces.
Let's hope they study super hard this week.
-
Re-wind 12mths, 24mths, 36mths,..... lots of new faces, net spend bugger all... again... soft late goals conceded...again.
and Gabby, he must have some photos of TS that he's threatening to put on the internet to explain how he keeps playing.
-
The extra training paying dividends then.
Yeah, in dead legs..
-
Had a spell when Adama came on - could have nicked it then, otherwise a draw would have been fair result as the second half was quite even.
Even? In the same way Tyson-Bruno was even?
-
With so many players coming in it could turn into a season of not knowing what his best side is. I can help him with one position however. Get Gabby out of the team.
Fucking ridiculous. He was truly shit today and should have had a goal and probably an assist in the first half. Unbelievable.
He's not even that fast any more.
-
I'm still not convinced Sherwood isn't just another Stuart Pearce when it comes to management.
-
Think a new striker is an absolute must. We need someone big who is also mobile. Gestede will be a good impact player against certain backlines, but Palace are pretty robust. Today was not his day.
I thought once again we ran out of steam badly. Amavi was very good first half, and poor in the second. Gana disappeared out the game. Grealish was done for after 70 minutes but that's no surprise really. Tim should have taken him off.
Gabby was a fucking abomination.
Bacuna is a liability. Today in particular was probably a game that would have suited Hutton more.
Traore looks a bit good. I think he'll be particularly useful coming off the bench for now.
I'll be honest, I think we're in for tough times again. There's some quality here but we're still lacking sorely in key areas and we seem compelled to gift the opposition goals and I don't see that changing under someone as gung-ho as Sherwood. In attack we largely look about as threatening as Woody Allen in boxing get up. We've got some real quality in Grealish, Gil and Traore, but we need someone more similar in ilk to Benteke up front. Physical and mobile.
-
At this point I think Sherwood needs to bite the bullet and play Grealish and Gil in the same team whenever available, even though that poses defensive/physicality problems. The midfield three looked good in the first half, but when Palace increased their intensity at the break, there just weren't any forward passing options available.
-
Watched the game and was so angry at the decisions Sherwood made throughout. It felt like a re-run of any Lambert performance. Decent tactics in the second half and we could quite easily have won as Palace were very poor. Why didn't he change the front two? what were they offering?. When he makes a change he takes one of our better players off in the mid field, leaving only two in the middle!. Having said that would you see a team of so called 'winners' make such a cock up at the end. Just what were Guzan and Amavi thinking? Only one bright spark and that of course was Traore who was amazing.
-
Stupid defeat really, I don't think there was too much between the teams, certainly not in the first half. Palace probably deserved the 1 nil as they stepped it up second half but considering I rate them as a top 10 team now I can't say their looked a bit gulf.
It's obvious what the problem is when Gabby is toe poking shots from 12 yards into the keeper. We've not really looked like scoring this season tbh but with Adama's cameo and Grealish imo being the best player on the pitch today we have the tools to create problems for opposition but goodness me we need way better upfront as Gestede dosent look up to much either if no decent crosses are coming in.
-
When we know the team is lacking fitness then why the fuck didn't TS use all 3 subs at his disposal particularly with Gabby and Gestede contributing the sum total of fuck all going forward. Sinclair and Ayew would have at least added some energy up front, whilst the decision to take off Sanchez was just stupidity.
The game was there for the taking at half time, but TS didn't make the right changes at the right times.
Positives: Traore and Jack
Negatives: Guzan, Bacuna, Gabby, Gestede
Not going to criticise Amavi too much...he shouldn't have received the ball in that position under pressure at that stage of the game in the first place. Guzan really lacks intelligence and needs to work on his distribution.
-
Once again nothing to be pride of. .
Never a satisfaction...
-
First half we were much the better side.
Second half we were poor. Tim needed to make a change but didn't.
I am extremely worried about where the goals will come from. Gabby is embarrassingly poor. Relying on Gestede and Kozak strikes me as a massive risk.
-
The one highlight of the game

-
We may have spent nearly 50m but the same old weaknesses are there. Can't defend, can't score enough, mediocre set pieces, always an idiot prepared to lay something on a plate for the opposition, and a manager who is the only one who fails to see the blindingly obvious.
Sherwood mostly to blame today, it's obvious to everyone except him Gabby is a waste of space, and Sanchez was the best player on the pitch first half. Surely Guzan has got to be replaced, his piss poor distribution is a liability and he's not all that as a shot stopper either. And the reasons I still don't rate Clark and probably never will were there for all to see today.
We still need a keeper, a right back, a CB and a goalscorer - we may well have the latter but we'll never know while Gabby keeps getting picked.
-
The extra training paying dividends then.
They all looked knackered and half arsed after 70 minutes. No leadership on the pitch, ah fuck it, I could go on but what's the point.
-
The annoying thing is that Palace went to pieces after Traore's effort. They really were bricking it. Goal two was Guzan's decision making. Amavi was put on the spot and tried to make something of it. There first goal I thought the scorer held Clark down, but it was still Clark's fault for letting it happen.
At 1-1 they panned around to Sherwood and I thought 'you jammy fucker'. It really was a dumb decision to take Sanchez off. By all means try to do something with the front three, but to empty central midfield really was a stupid thing to do.
We should have won, for the first 45 we were the better side. Then Pardew changed things around and they competed better in midfield. So Sherwood takes a player out. Tactical genius. Apart from a missed one on one that should really have been taken, what did Gabby do?
Gestede looks bit of a lump in all truth. He's got a lot of learning to do.
-
I am not and haven't been in the "we'll be fine" camp.
I think this season will be another long hard slog, although I hope we don't get dragged into another horrible end of season scrap.
For me the problems seem to be that we don't really raise our game.
Palace were poor first half, really poor, but they turned it up second half, looked like they had a belief they would win, and were by far the better team.
We just seem to plod along. No real variation, no stepping up of the pace, no pressing.
That's what now? 7, 8 games where we have looked totally ineffective.
I am still waiting for this winning mentality to kick in.
-
Well.
I haven't changed my opinion from the opening day win at Bournemouth. We ain't all that I'm afraid. I'm struggling to see an improvement over the Lambert years if I'm honest. Ignore the result, look at the chances created, look at the cohesion, look at the movement, the desire, the cutting edge, the creativity. It isn't there.
And yes, I know what the reply will be... mitigating circumstances - so many new players, we need time to gel etc etc.
Fair comment.
But I will say this. If you've spent over 20 million pounds on forwards and you are still starting (and playing 90 minutes for Christ's sake) with Gabriel Agbonlabollocks then you have fucked up. Big time.
As for today's game. Shame for amarvi who has been outstanding up to now, he'll learn from it. Traore Is ready yo start. We need Gil fit quickly. Richards is solid. Sanchez is solid, his distribution is utter wank, but I'd have kept him on and took Gabby off and took a point.
Finally, frustration apart. Add Charlie Austin, lescott and a real right back to that squad and we'll be ok. Without a goalscorer? We're gonna struggle fellas. Sorry.
-
Bugger.
-
Watching the game I got the impression that Tim told the team to soak up the pressure in the second half. As a result we seemed to play within ourselves - unfortunately, it didn't improve.
I don't think Tim will keep Gabby in for too much longer. I suspect he's tried to get him back to his form of a few years ago, making him club captain, etc. Gestede was poor but of the few headers he did win, Gabby hadn't gambled, and therefore the ball was picked up by Palace
Adama is a very very exciting prospect.
-
It's a bad result but I'm not that worried, it's still early days and these are mostly new players, give them time.
Just need to fuck Gabby off. Sign Austin.
-
Adama to start next prem game, gabby in the stands please. Dim Tim will start him though, you can bet money on it.
-
I think we have creativity, but we don't have a lot to make it count. Not just finishing, but movement or first touches worth a damn from the strikers. Can you imagine how well Grealish would do in a team like Swansea or Southampton, whose forwards never stop moving and who don't clam up and start panicking at the sight of a goal?
-
Tim's to do list next week.
Sign Austin
Sign lescott
Sign a proper RB
Sign an upgrade DCM
Drop Gabby
Drop Clark

Yep I agree. Above all else Sherwood needs to find a decent striker in the next week, I'd paid whatever QPR want for Austin tbh.
With Adama's cameo and Grealish back those are the two to play either side of the striker and rest of the team looks solid enough if no frills.
-
P.S. Grealish, who has all the talent to be a great player, needs to look at Traore and learn that you need to be more dynamic. Stop fucking about rolling your foot over the ball in front of your defender and try and take him on instead. Ivfear he'll be the new lee hendrie if someone doesn't coach him properly.
-
Early days but it doesn't look good and its going to be another long hard season we need at the very least another striker.Gestede needs more time but early impression is he is basically a big lump good in the air but his ability holding up the ball or with ball at feet is limited.
Gabby did nothing ..was given great through balls by Westwood and Jack and did sweet FA.
Sinclair hard done by to be dropped whilst Gabby is getting 90 mins.
Bacuna is a liability his defending relies mosty on him being quick enough to get back when he is out of position.Always looks so nervous on the ball too his one decent attribute ,crossing has gone to shit as well.
-
If Agbonlahor is a premier league striker, well then so am I.
Shocking performance from him even my wife who knows the sum of fuck all about football said he's "garbage"
We'll improve, how much - who bloody knows!
-

Agree - struggling to see why so many are raving about him. Neat and tidy but still far too much fart and very little shit in my book.
-
I really wanted Tim to do well but he'll be another one out the door, just like the others for refusing to realize you know who should be nowhere near the first team.
-
I don't think Austin is the answer...we need someone more dynamic and mobile. Austin thrives on the same service that the likes of Gestede needs and we just don't have those players (with the possible exception of Traore).
Gestede is useless if you don't supply good quality crosses and Gabby is just, well...useless. TS surely must only be persevering with Gabby until Ayew is fit or he brings in a better goalscoring option.
-
We desperately need a goalscorer.
-
Gabby playing the whole game handicapped us noticeably. Having just 1 player not contributing is going to cost us points.
-
Sinclair hard done by to be dropped whilst Gabby is getting 90 mins.
Neither deserve to be in the team. Gestede must miss the tactics at Blackburn. I doubt very much he appreciates the hoofs up field all afternoon.
-
Sanchez was close to dominate the midfield. Quite a ridiculous substitution.
Attack-wise I liked the 20% we played on the floor.
Hated the 80% to Gestede's head, though. If they continue doing that Id rather we hadn't bought him.
My stats obviously, but it felt that way.
-
Played really well in the first half I thought, but instead of a cutting edge up front we had the ambling frame of one Gabby Agbonlahor.
Pardew recognised his side were in big trouble at the break and brought on two. Took off their big signing Cabeye too who was useless.
Sherwood was Lambert esque in his response, their goal was coming for a while. Our equaliser was a fluke deflection and the winner was another comedy show.
Tactically we were a mess but more worryingly was how unfit we looked yet again and the spineless shell revealed itself during the second half.
Guzan 4 - better keeper would have stopped both goals imo, the second wouldnt have come about with a keeper with a brain either
Bacuna 2 - a disgrace to the shirt in the second half, gutless, brainless and Hutton may aswell hand in a transfer request if he doesnt start next week
Richards 7 - dont rate him but probably our best player
Clark 5 - very solid first half but went to pot in the second, another unnecessary dirty yellow card and beaten in the air by Dann for the goal
Amavi 4 - very good in the first half but took wrong options constantly in the second half including the one that cost us the game
Westwood 5 - very good first half but went missing in the second like most of the others
Sanchez 7 - outstanding first half, maybe wouldnt have lasted the full 90 but we capsized in midfield once he went off
Gueye 5 - bright in the first half without ever really threatening, badly struggling for last 20 mins or so
Grealish 7 - excellent first half, think he over indulges in non threatening areas. need him further forward
Gabby 2 - how he lasted past half time I'll never know, only Sherwood knows why he lasted for the full game
Gestede 5 - ran out of ideas a bit but to get the most out of him we simply cant have Gabby getting in his way
Traore 8 - added much needed directness and speed to our attack
Sherwood 3 - another nightmare effort from tactics Tim, crouched back in the dugout while we were all at sea on the pitch, was reminiscent of Lambert at the end.
-
The main positive for me was that the players who looked the poorest were not the new signings (if that counts as a positive)
I'm looking at -
Clark - too weak in the air and his aimless hoofing really is woeful
Bacuna - not particularly a threat going forward and defensively a huge weak link. Guzan got him out of big trouble in the second half
Agbonlahor - Didn't do a thing
Positives
Traore - came on and looked frightening, you can see the end product needs work but still very good
Sanchez - looked very good winning back possession, distributing the ball and getting those 50/50s. Should be a regular starter
Grealish - I think i forgot just how good he is
-
As wonderful as Jack can be, by the time he'd decided what to do, Palace had 11 men behind the ball. Wonderful ball to Gabby and great to watch but it rarely helps the team.
-

Spot on mr Woo. Ive seen nothing to make me think we will be anything other than bottom 6 this year.
-
Not good enough I'm afraid. I'm not sure why we've started handing out new contracts to utterly mediocre players like Bacuna and Westwood either, they haven't been good enough for the last three years, and they aren't going to be in the future either. Grealish is all fart and no shit, and Gabby must have pictures of Sherwood in a compromising position with Lisa Riley or something, as I can't fathom for the life of me how he continues to get a game.
We need a striker and a right back before all the positivity of the summer disappears. That said, three winnable games up next, from which at least 4 points is an absolute must.
-
Decent game. The kit looks great. We were pretty good in the first half, Palace were all over us in the second. I like what they're trying to do - attacking full backs, Sanchez dropping to cover when they're moving forward.
Gabby's got to be benched. He just doesn't offer anything any more. His chance in the first half summed up his last couple of seasons - still some pace to get there, feeble effort on goal. His finishing is poor, his crossing is poor, his heading doesn't seem what it once was and although still quick doesn't have the same pace to burn that he used to.
Great to see Grealish back, looked great. I quite liked the midfield three for this game - Sanchez was excellent and Westwood good in the first half. Amavi was good and unlucky to lose the ball for the second goal. Defence overall decent. Not convinced that Gestede is going to be able to carry things upfront. Traore = unit. All muscle and directness.
Take Gabby out and start Traore and/or Gil. There are promising signs and you get the feeling Sherwood is seeing what we see and will sort it.
-
Sinclair hard done by to be dropped whilst Gabby is getting 90 mins.
Neither deserve to be in the team. Gestede must miss the tactics at Blackburn. I doubt very much he appreciates the hoofs up field all afternoon.
Disagree, Sinclair has something about him and an eye for goal. Gabby has neither.

I quite agree, a crap substitution, much like the crap Sinclair substitution last Friday.
And we risk being very, very one dimensional if we continue to think that playing (crap) crosses into Gesteded, constantly, is our best option.

Sinclair is the new N'Zogbia. All fart, no shit.
-
We need a striker and soon. The team looks, on the whole, a much more fluid outfit with lots of exciting attacking options apart from where it counts. Gestede is OK but isnt ready for 90 mins in the premier league right now. Why on earth is Gabby playing? He offers absolutely nothing...not even his nuisance value. He's a waste of a shirt.
-
Chucked a point away there.
Sherwood made a few errors for me; starting with Gabby, persisting with Gabby and taking off Samchez.
Palace huff and puff and look to hit you on the break, with by and large poor delivery. Taking off somebody as strong in the air as Sanchez and lo and behold we concede.
That we got back into it with Adama and his rocket powered boots should have seen us hold out, as we were never under any significant pressure at any point during the game. Obviously we cant let the absence of pressure get in the way of a Villa gift. I blame Guzan as well for bowling the pull out to put the full back under pressure, as he'd done the same to Bacuna earlier too.
I can't agree that we lack cutting edge. There were more than enough good kno I downs from Gestede, more than enough intelligent through and reverse balls from Jack and more than enough in Adama to suggest chances can and will be created. The problem is Gabby.
He has not got the intelligence to work with others. He should have scored in the first half and it cost us. He should have squared for a six yard tap in the first half and it cost us. You play with ten men and it makes life difficult. The fact we were the better side for the first half is a testament to the other ten.
Second half they came onto us more and Guzan made two decent saves, while we didn't have the same impetus. The equalising goal changed the game; their full back shat himself and the game was petering out. Typical Villa.
They're no better than us. They're the same lingering negatives, but enough positives to be hopeful of being better than the past five years.
-
2 games running sherwood has made the wrong substitution.
Sinclair last Friday, today Sanchez .
At least our next game looks quite winnable.
-
I think Tim will see it too Simmons. Let's face it, if he can spot a decent player for a transfer, he must be able to spot someone not delivering.
-

Sinclair is the new N'Zogbia. All fart, no shit.
There's basically no basis for that comment. The last time he got a constant run of games in the PL, he had a decent goalscoring record for a winger. He scored 3 in 12 during his loan spell, and part of that was spent when we had little clue otherwise when it came to attacking. He had a good pre-season. He played at Bournemouth, where the gameplan was conservative, and he was unlucky to be substituted against United.

That seems to be the phrase of the day, but I disagree Sinclair's already scored a few goals for us.
-
Meh, fucking pissed off to be honest. First half all over them but no cutting edge, let them play too much 2nd, Gabby is a disgrace, why he plays every week I'll never know, every time he got the ball in a promising position he fucked it up. You need someone to build around and it's not him. We need a goal scorer. Sort it the fuck out.
-
In the last week we've been busy giving long term deals to average players like westwood Gardner and Bacuna , not a good sign. They won't improve us one iota .
-
i'm not too disappointed. Young team, new players. Better quality, they just need a good few games. I think the only reason Gabby is on the pitch is we probably only have 2 or 3 players with prem experience at the moment. I wouldn't change too much. Probably Sinclair and Hutton for Gabby and Bacuna
-
Bacuna pissed me off as well by starting to waste time with 5 min left, all that lead to their goal. 5 year deal my arse.
Work on your shooting mate, not the silly hair.

I've seen nothing to convince me he has a clue what to do with the ball when he finds himself in a great position. He's that rare type of winger that doesn't/can't cross the ball. He's ace at finding dead ends though. He most certainly not the answer to our problems, just another to add to the list.
-
3 goals in 12 for a winger is not 'all fart and no shit'.
-
I am more pissed off with the manner of defeat. To have a draw in the bag as we enter the closing stages and to give it away like that was pathetic and unprofessional. Neither Guzan or Amavi can look back on that with any pride.
-
3 goals in 12 for a winger is not 'all fart and no shit'.
He's all yours, Paul. Enjoy the endless frustration.
-
This is it. We need somebody else, almost anybody else, than Gabby and this forward would surely of been capable of putting away his gift of a chance. A proper forward and we go in two up away from home at half time. Gabby was past it years ago and sadly isn't getting any better.
Adama is quite easily the most exciting player I've seen in a very long time. Fu backs the league over should be very afraid, as if he gets you facing your own goal, then you've got two just the two chances of stopping him; kick him once for your yellow and twice for your red.
-
Sinclair hard done by to be dropped whilst Gabby is getting 90 mins.
Neither deserve to be in the team. Gestede must miss the tactics at Blackburn. I doubt very much he appreciates the hoofs up field all afternoon.
Disagree, Sinclair has something about him and an eye for goal. Gabby has neither.
I've seen nothing to convince me he has a clue what to do with the ball when he finds himself in a great position. He's that rare type of winger that doesn't/can't cross the ball. He's ace at finding dead ends though. He most certainly not the answer to our problems, just another to add to the list.
Except, for, y'know, those goals he's scored. Just because you mightn't have seen them doesn't mean they didn't happen.
I'm not suggesting he's definitely the saviour or anything and he's been okay at best so far, but it's plainly a ridiculous assertion to make based off what he's shown in his career.
-
Why has 'all fart and no shit' suddenly become the phrase to use? Bit unfair to be comparing Sinclair to N'Zogbia when the poor bloke hasn't even played today, he's a far better option than bloody Agbonlahor who I believe did play today for some strange reason.
-
3 games, 1 goal scored. It's pretty obvious what we need.
-
Why has 'all fart and no shut' suddenly become the phrase to use? But unfair to be comparing Sinclair to N'Zogbia when the poor bloke hasn't even played today, he's a far better option than bloody Agbonlahor who I believe did play today for some strange reason.
Exactly I've seen that phrase thrown about loads unjustly.

Disagree, Sinclair has something about him and an eye for goal. Gabby has neither.
Sherwood was rightly criticised for taking him off against Man Ure. It was a mistake not to play him again. Sinclair had been far superior to Gabby since Sherwood took control, not sure why he isn't giving him a go.
The big mistake today was failing to adapt to the Palace half time changes. Sherwoods can't be blamed for individual errors.
-
The problem with Gabby can be cured at BH in two minutes. Put him on the scales and weigh him. Write his weight on a piece of paper for him to keep. Then explain to him that when he was the player he once was he was (at a guess) a stone lighter. Then say get properly back in shape or you don't play. There is no reason at his age why he has become so slow other than weight.

Can't imagine how peed off Sinclair must be to be harshly dropped while Agbonlahor continues to be given a free run.

3 games, 1 goal scored. It's pretty obvious what we need.
And very few chances created either
-
Why has 'all fart and no shit' suddenly become the phrase to use?
I think Risso describing Grealish as that was much worse than Rudy's use of it to describe Sinclair. I know football is a game about which people have incredibly diverse opinions, but Grealish useless? Really?

I said the other week he needs to lose at least a stone.
For someone who trains for 3 or 4 hours a day to be the weight he is he must be eating or drinking a serious quantity of shite. His biggest asset is his pace and to use that he should be about 11st. I reckon he may even be 13st currently

Maybe it's because like Gabby and N'Zogbia, he has no end product. The only hope is that due to him not playing for a couple of years he's still got it but it will take time for him to rediscover his form. I'm not going to hold my breath.
-
Austin got 18 goals for a rubbish QPR team. There are no goals in that Villa team at the moment. It's too obvious. Get him in there. Or Berahino
-
Agbonlahor has now cost us 3 goals this season simply because he is wasted. Feeble efforts against Bournemouth and today with only Keeper to beat and poor header against Manu. This kind of incompetence can be allowed to continue.
-
One in four is no end product? Ok.

The problem is with his footballing brain, he just doesn't have one. He was clean through today, being a little bit lighter still wouldn't mean he slots it in.
-
I don't think Austin is the answer...we need someone more dynamic and mobile.
See, you say that about Austin, I too was a doubter. I wasn't sure cos I don't pay that much attention to players from other sides, so I watched a montage of ten of his goals from last season on YouTube. To me, he scores the type of goals I've been expecting Gabby to score for some years now. Nothing spectacular, just "alive" in the box, and knowing where the goal is. Without changing much, I think he'd bag 15 a season for us. With the players (Amavi, Traore, Gil, Grealish) we have around the squad now, he could get 20. I say buy.
-
I think you may be right about his weight Sil. GH was the first to comment on it but we we told he was trying to bulk up. Yeah, lifting a knife and fork and a glass.
-

Gabby is still pretty damn quick. I think the problem is he can't receive a ball properly, he can't dribble very well anymore, he is becoming a poor finisher, and he's not exactly a dangerous passer of the ball. Unfortunately, I think those weaknesses have more to do with technique and ability rather than weight.
I've always liked Gab, just need a lot more from him.

When you are fit and slim you are mentally sharp. When you are fat your whole outlook changes. Cole is exactly the same except his weight problems are masked by his injuries and the two are not entirely unrelated.
-
It was ridiculously hot in South London today. So I'd love to hear why our only substitution was to take our best player off. How the fuck Gabby starts, let alone finishes a game, is beyond me.
-
Get Gabby out
Get Bacuna out
Get Austin in
Get a right back in
Poor choice of substitution when he withdrew Sanchez
-
Gabby was at his best playing up front on his own. He's gone as a top flight player. He can't anticipate balls either knocked down from his partner up top or balls fed through to him.
-

I said the same thing in the match thread.
I don't think Gabby and Gestede linked up once. The amount of passes they played to one another must've been less than 3 or 4. Did Gabby win any of the second balls launched at Rudy?
They were so disconnected.
-

That's spot on for me. Gabby and Bacuna should not get within a million miles of a decent Premier league team. Without a proven goalscorer, I fear we will be bottom 6.

I agree, the phrase has been used by at least three people on this thread and I wuestioned whoever it was who first used it about Grealish.
-

The people describing Grealish and Sinclair as all fart and no shit are talking out of their arse
-
I see Sinclair seems to be getting better by not playing
Crap at Bournemouth, crap largely against United bar for the ten mins before he got replaced
He hasnt played well for the club once away from home
-
Important we regroup this week and get tactics correct for Sunderland which really is a must not lose game now.
I'd like Sinclair and hutton back and bunn in for Guzan , hoping we have lescott and Austin in before Tuesday next week so they are available.
-
Before the season started I said we couldn't afford to gift goals to teams on a par with us. We'll thanks for that Villa. Thanks a fuckin bunch.
-
On a positive note this Adama kid looks f'kin ace!! Electrifying pace, he'll terrorize full backs, looks to have a decent cross in him too. Good stuff!!
-
Getting a bit fed up of it all really, I know long way to go but we look shit again!
-

I think Risso describing Grealish as that was much worse than Rudy's use of it to describe Sinclair. I know football is a game about which people have incredibly diverse opinions, but Grealish useless? Really?
To me it doesn't mean someone is useless. It means there's a lot of fancy stuff but not enough end product. It fits Grealish pretty well I'd say. With N'Zog you rarely even get the windy bit. As for Sinclair he's chipped in with a few goals and it seems a little harsh. I'm not convinced he's an out and out winger. I reckon either he or Ayew would have thrived in Gabby's position today, playing off Gestede with a bit of anticipation, intelligence and tehcnique.
-
I like Grealish, but he needs to be far more direct and impactful. It's all good and well drifting around trying to win free kicks but he needs to use his ability to beat players and create goals. He doesn't shoot and doesn't set up much but is an attractive player to watch outside of the box. Which is ok but rarely leads to anything. He needs to assert himself and make defences fear him and I don't think they do. They respect his ability but they don't fear it. Yet.
-
Is the villa team all fart and no shit ?
The people describing Grealish and Sinclair as all fart and no shit are talking out of their arse
Re Grealish I'm one of them and I stand by it. Traore created more danger in one short appearance than Jack has in several. For me he isn't direct enough, doesn't take his man on enough, doesn't shoot enough and doesn't try enough killer passes. He looks to have good technique and touch but it's no good dancing around in a non-threatening part of the pitch and then turning round and playing a safe pass backwards to the left back. Which is what he seems to do eight times out of ten when I've watched him. When he is direct he can be dangerous as he was when he set up the goal against West Ham last season. But it's all too rare and I think a lot of people are getting a bit too excited about not very much more than a lot of promise so far.
-
In the last week we've been busy giving long term deals to average players like westwood Gardner and Bacuna , not a good sign. They won't improve us one iota .
westwood is distinctly better than average; Gardner hasn't really featured yet due to injury, so unwise to make any judgement about him until he gets some games to show what he can do. Bacuna, I'll grant you is average. Squad player at best, Hutton should be starting at rb.

I like westwood , he's a tidy little player but he's a low end PL player, really a championship player. He has not kicked on in 3 years yet at this level which suggests he isn't going to IMHO.

Fair enough. I've always thought of him as being a target man, but if he's got more to offer than that then his goal scoring record speaks for itself...I haven't watched his highlights yet but he's already got 4 league goals this season.
-

he looks to have bulked up the muscle the last few seasons (As opposed to being fat) and the main attribute he relies on - pace- has suffered as a result. He's pretty good in the air when he gets decent chances, but finishing on the ground is terrible and always has been.
-
My comment on the pre match thread said 'If Agbonlahor plays we lose'. He did..We did! The only manager who sussed him out was Gerard Houllier who was right.
-
It was ridiculously hot in South London today. So I'd love to hear why our only substitution was to take our best player off. How the fuck Gabby starts, let alone finishes a game, is beyond me.
My thoughts entirely. The BBC seems to of the opinion that Gabby's pace terrified Scott Dann all afternoon. The Scott Dann I saw had Gabby in his pocket...
-
It's the defence that worries me more than anything. We could average 2 goals a game and still give them 3 gifts. I just can't understand the mentality behind our defending. It totally baffles me. Sunday league sided seem to be more professional when it comes to defending. Considering how the game went 1-1 would have been a good result but oh no we're Aston Villa the obvious never occurs to us.
-
Gabby's pace is fine even with the extra bulk. But as we saw in the first half its his ability to be a goalscorer that lets him down time and again.
-
It looks like Rudy may have flattered to deceive early on. Good in the air, sure, but when you're up against a defence like Palace's who don't give much away in that department then you have to have other tricks up your sleeve at this level. We can't carry luxury players and one trick ponies, we haven't got that kind of set-up
-
Disappointed we really need a striker and a right back.
-
We need to step it up a bit if we're going to win the league.
-
The defence looked pretty solid in the first half, although Sanchez arguably playing his best 45 minutes for us so far took a lot of pressure off us. Truth is we outclassed Palace in the first half and with a touch more guile could have won it then. We looked tired in the second half until Adama came on.
-
Disappointed we really need a striker and a right back.
[/quotDisappointed we really need a striker and a right back.
When will Kozak be back as an option? Why not see if Hutton can reproduce his best form of last season?
Stupid phone...can't stop it from putting everything in quote...
-
How did Micah play ? Did Clark start hoofing again today ?
-
I wonder if we'll make Blancmange a fresh offer once he's fit again. No-one else bigger than us seems to be battering his door down...
-
Grealish picked out several very good passes today. Unfortunately on every occasion the ball went to Flabby Ag-roundasaball-or who did nothing. Grealish was easily our best player for 60 minutes but then ran out of steam (understandebly).
Get him, Gil and Troare playing together and we'll create. Drop Gabby asap.
-
I would think that Ayew sitting on the bench for the first forty five minutes watching gormless Gabby doing absolutely naff all as per usual must have thought I should get on in the second half . But of course he didn't, we knew he wouldnt. Its demoralising just seeing his name on the teamsheet game after naffing game. Bacuna (with his stupid hair) shouldnt be at right back. He is an awful right back.
-
How did Micah play ? Did Clark start hoofing again today ?
Micah was pretty good, especially in first half.
I wonder about double training sessions. Perhaps a morning session followed by an afternoon of watching DVDs of matches and analysing them would be more effective?...
-
How did Micah play ? Did Clark start hoofing again today ?
Okay and yes.
But to be fair, any time our CH's get the ball there's no one showing for them. Clark doesn't have the pace that Micah does, who will occasionally take a burst out to the half way line and find a pass. Richards did overplay and get caught out a couple of times though.
-
Micah overplaying is probably a symptom of fuck all offering In front of him

We were dead on our feet after 60 minutes. I recall us struggling under Houlliers double sessions early in the season too.
I think we need to wind it down a bit because clearly we're not working remotely on things like tactics if I'm being brutally honest.
-

Indeed.

We have to remember how young JG still is. We can't expect the finished article yet.

Oh definitely not but given he's pretty damn good already, the potential he has is very exciting. We've got some genuine attacking quality if we can get the rest of our balance right. For that I think we're still short a striker and I'd be inclined to sit Sanchez and Gana deep, and drop Westwood.
-
Adama has got to start on Tuesday. We need to get him Premier league fit ASAP.
-
Subs should have been Ayew for Gabby then Traore for Gana then Bacuna for Hutton.
-
One in four is no end product? Ok.
One in four?
Last season 6 in 34
13-14: 4 in 30
12-13: 9 in 28
11-12: 5 in 33
10-11: 3 in 26
The last five years, his goal return has been godawful.
27 in 141 league games.
-
I see Callum Wilson scored a hat - trick for Bournemouth today. Perhaps we should've bid for him instead of Ayew?
-

Difference is bournemouth create chances. We create very little.
I thought Bournemouth were good at Anfield and obviously did well today. Matt Ritchie looks a good player
-
I thought we created a few things today. You also create more chances if you take them, which we didn't today.
Sherwood got outdone by Pardew with the half time changes that he made, and then compounded things by bringing off Sanches and losing the middle of the park completely.

Well that is the thing we must remember that Sherwood is still very inexperienced and is still learning the game whereas most the Managers he will come up against this season have far more experience.
I will wait till I see the highlights before commenting too much, but by the sounds of the radio reports it sounds like it was a decent game which really came to life in the last 30 minutes. I guess I have mixed feelings because we showed good character to bounce back as quickly as we did, but then it was very sloppy to lose the lead like that when we were on the verge of getting what would have been a solid point. Yeah I think we could do with another striker, but I'm not having this about Guzan. He hasn't suddenly become a bad keeper.
-
Haven't seen any of the match but just seems to me that the team has a lot of bad habits and a lack of confidence. Sherwood has got his work cut out to get us clicking again. How I long to see us as a feared team again who pay zero respect to the opposition and play with aggression
-
Its a bit worrying that Sherwood's made the wrong changes two games running after making the right change at Bournemouth, also why the fuck do we look exhausted after 3 games?
-
It's sad that fans of teams like Palace look forward to playing us. We should be better than that.

I can't see what his age has to do with anything. He's starting his first full season as a proper manager.

What does Sherwood see in Gabby? he has become a very poor player and should have been taken off at half time, Bacuna is no right back and Gestede looks out of his depth. Need a quality striker badly.

Gabby I agree on. I think he is good to keep around the squad for the younger players but I wouldn't have him anymore than as a squad player. Acutally think that Bacuna does alright at full-back and is decent set pieces and going forward.
How can you say that Gestede is out of his depth when we are only three games into the season, he has only started one, and has scored a goal.

I totally disagree. If you are 28 years old and still struggling with your first and second touch losing weight isn't going to help you.
But in principle, yes, getting an extra yard of pace out of him would help. Those goals against the noses seem a long long time ago. He's been below that level for an inexcusable length of time.

got to disagree on gabby, he is the last person i would want around the squad for younger players.
i like sherwood but if gabby starts against sunderland he really has lost the plot. plus bacuna is not a right back so dont play him there.
its not that difficult is it? is it?
-
Was at the game today, unfortunately in with the home fans. Both my palace supporting friends thought we were unlucky to lose. We were the better team in the first half and had Brad booted the ball up the pitch we would all be talking about a hard earned draw.
I like Sherwood but have no idea why he took Sanchez off, but wow what an introduction by Troare.
Think we'll be ok. I was at the same fixture last year, and watched Palace batter us for 90 mins, we escaped with a one nil win. I guess we owed them one.

All Wilson goals were gifts given to him and as he's on pens he got a hat trick.

Kozak should be given a go.
-
One of the things I like about Kozak is he seems to have a natural sense of movement. Too frequently our forwards make the run into the box, but when the ball doesn't arrive immediately, they just stand there waiting and allow themselves to be marked. Good strikers don't stop moving.
-
I posted in wrong thread but can say again that Clark outmuscled for goal and second cwas naive but enforced by Sherwood attacking want. Also Sunderland next and undefeated in 8 against them Gabby often scores them so positive play and pace of traore see us back to winning ways.
-
I also think kozak deserves a chance, fuck gabby off once and for all
-
We played well first half, by far the better team and a half decent striker would not have hit the keeper when one on one. Half time they made a double substitution, I was watching with my lad and said I reckon they are going to match up with us. They bossed play and we needed a substitution and was chuffed when Traore coming on, but could not understand why Sanchez, who had been superb, was taken off. They took the lead and then Traore showed his class, but still no Gabby taken off and we lost. Guzan should not have thrown to Amavi, who should not have tried to take the player on. Really think the manager messed up today and I am a big fan of his
-
I thought we created a few things today.
Inexperienced?
He is 46
Aston Villa appoint 53 year old Chris Jameson as manager. Although Jameson is a bit of a fuckwit and lacks motivation in most things he does and his only previous experience of management was in his mates record shop, they were keen to appoint somebody experienced.

Kozak should get a chance on Tuesday night.

Jameson out ! Bring back Ads as manager

Taking Sanchez off was one of the more bizarre sub decisions I've seen for a while.
Has there ever been a keeper with worse distribution skills than Brad?

you would think that in training he would work on this. a bit like you would think westwood would work on corners and gabby on how to kick a ball. ive wondered for ages what they actually do in training but it must be a lot as half of them look fucked

Kozak's performance against Forest makes Gabby look like Lionel Messi. I quote the Woodhall theorem. The less a player plays the higher his reputation. While we are fantasising about a player recovering from an horrendous injury and a year out of action, why not go the whole hog and bring back Tonev to give us attacking width and fire power?

Explain Kozak in the 2-2 at Wolves then

Is it the motivation thing or because I'm a bit of a fuckwit? I shall be dropping Agbonlahor and bringing in Hutton at right back for the next game. I'm also likely to accidentally pick two goalkeepers though.
-
I see Callum Wilson scored a hat - trick for Bournemouth today. Perhaps we should've bid for him instead of Ayew?
Difference is bournemouth create chances. We create very little.
I thought Bournemouth were good at Anfield and obviously did well today. Matt Ritchie looks a good player
I thought Bournemouth created jack all against Liverpool. They play very well in front of you, but lack penetration. West Ham must have been utter toss.

I forgot to say; drums and goal music should mean we pick up three points by default, as Palace are deducted 10000 points, the ground bull dozed and the ground sown with salt, their fans sold into slavery as punishment, every historical reference of them expunged, with all merchandise and memorabilia in their name to be incinerated.

whats Clark doing goal 1?

And another thing, that was the hottest game since Leicester away in 1996. Sweet baby Jesus but it was warm.

Yes, shock horror, he was tackled by a specialist defender! Unbelievable.

It's a measure of my optimism (believing that we are the reincarnation of BFR's first season) about Villa that I watched MOTD, after Villa losing, for the the first time in years.
There are, however, some observations to make:-
Gary Vinegar = Toad
*l*n Sh**r*r = Ugo-injuring, scummy single-hand-up-on-scoring, personality bypassing, BBC bribing tw*t
S*m *ll*rdyc* = Fat crook
What winds me up is that S*m *ll*rdyc* used the word lacksadaisical, which makes me want to put my foot through the telly.
So...if any of you are unaware of RTE's Après Match, here's their take on MOTD (of old):-
(quite amusing)

I thought it was a cracking atmosphere from both sets of fans. Since they were promoted I have been more impressed by the atmosphere at Selhurst Park than any other ground.

I'm not going to get carried away with this result, or even the two previous.
I expected a loss against a decent palace side, and also expect us to bounce back against Sunderland.
As it is, there has not been much difference in the class of all our opposition so far, whilst we have a new team bedding in.
Only real negative is Gabby, he has to start on the bench.
-
We weren't abysmal in the first half at all, we were easily the better side.
-
To clear up two points about what I believe and why. They are my opinions honestly expressed, I do not expect or want universal agreement. Firstly Gabby's weight. Like many of us I have watched his entire career with us. What made an outstanding player and got him capped for his country was his blistering pace. He was very quick. His whole game was built on his speed. As he has piled on weight his game has steadily deteriorated. Weight is a barometer of fitness level and throughout the game the fatter players get with age the slower and poorer they play. In Gabby's case even as far back as GH who knew a thing or two about football Gabby was slowing and we were told he was weight training and "bulking up". That is not muscle round his midriff, it is fat. He does not have the range of football skills to compensate for his declining speed. If he is to play any part in the new Villa we hope is around the corner he has to get quicker and lighter. Sprinters like Alan Wells, John Regis and Peter Radford were in their prime at Gabby's age. I love Gabby, I have a shirt with his name on the back but he has been allowed to exist in the comfort zone for too long and it shows. My opinion.
As for Libor and why he cannot be thrown in the deep end I agree he had a good game at Walsall but he paid for it at Forest. He had a bad leg fracture which had to be re broken and re pinned. He is nowhere near match hard or match fit. He will no doubt feature on Tuesday and the game is tailor made as a step on the road to recovery but to see him as our regular centre forward on a weekly basis is both rash and risky. There seems to be a long overdue concern at the club towards protecting our investments. We have invested a lot of time and money in Libor. His rehabilitation should be planned and thought through fully. My opinion.
-
So in short, Gabby is fat, Libor isn't match fit.
Agree, now let's go get Charlie Austin .
-
A very measured and well rounded post Brian.
-
It was a brain dead way to lose what was a very good point, but we need to keep some perspective. Say what you like about Pardew, but he has done one heck of a job up there. They have won over 50% of his games in charge I believe, if they keep that form up they will be contenders for the top 6. It's a tough place to go yet we were well worthy of a point, until a bad substitution and a defensive catastrophe undid a lot of very decent work.
Sanchez was probably tired as he hasn't had much of a pre-season but you don't bring on a winger for him at a time in the match when the home side traditionally build pressure if it's goalless.
Positives: Sanchez, fairly solid defensively in general (Bacuna aside - that was one of his worst games for us), Grealish looked good and got kicked all over the place, Traore could be special. I thought Gestede had a good hour as well before tiring, people are being harsh on him.
Negatives: We can't have a right back letting his winger in behind him as often as Bacuna does, and I would play Hutton, Gabby who you really hoped would have taken some responsibility now Benteke has gone and we have a stack of new players but he just looks like yesterday's man, Gueye who got overran for me and struggled.
-
It beggars belief that he keeps picking Agbonlahor week in, week out.
As I've said on previous occasions, by the time his contract runs out again we will of paid another £8.5 mil in salary to watch this clearly unfit, clueless excuse for a footballer amble around a football pitch.
Mind boggling, it really is.

No, we were not abysmal. The first half we actually played quite well. They made a couple of changes at the start of the 2nd and we never really got going again until Traore came on. We deserved a point and we would have got one had Guzan and Amavi hadn't fucked up between them.
-
I agree Clampy. I thought we played really well in the first half and there only looked like one team who could win it in the final stages.
Shit result but I don't think the performance was that bad from 75% of the players.
-
Views seem to have shifted somewhat since pre-match thread where over 75% thought we would not lose the game.
Now it's Palace what a tough place to go etc etc.
this in my opinion is a poor result , yes it was a silly error but from what I've seen and read palace were worthy winners.

I agree. Plenty of encouraging signs but we need to become a little more streetwise at both ends.
-
Terrible play by Amavi trying to do go past a player in that position with 3 mins to go.
I'm not sure if he had much of an option. Equally did he call for it, or was it a brain fart on Guzan's part as it was an epic hospital pass.

You could be right as Guzans distribution is appalling.

Probably a bit of both. A smarter keeper would see an inexperienced player with a defender nearby as a risk. A more experienced player would have ensured that Guzan did not see him as an option in the first place.
-

And argument is not fractured and carries weight if I may say so.

I think Amavi has a reputation, as we'd heard from a few ITK's just prior to his signing, for taking risks around his own box. It's something that he'll get punished more severely for in this league and something he'll have to cut out.
Better to get it out of his system now, and not potentially in May when points could mean the difference between staying up or going down.
-
Oh and like someone said earlier, it was bloody hot down there yesterday. They stopped the game twice so the players could get a drink. I hate to think what it must have been like to run round in that heat.

When Amavi received the ball he had two options. Hoof it with his left foot or go inside on his right. He choose the latter which proved to be a mistake. However he is blameless since guzan should not have thrown it out to him in the first place

Had the dribble worked we would have been in too, well as in as you can be when near your own area, he had acres in front of him and players breaking too. I personally would put more blame on Guzan's shoulders unless Amavi called for it.
-
These late goals we let in really pisses me off. It's been a trend for years with Villa under several different managers. Why can't we get a late goal? Very rarely happens.
-

Just wondering, has Sherwood made any comments recently about Sanchez's ability to finish out games? Obviously the perception around here last season was that keeping him on after the hour mark would be to tempt fate. Given that it was hot enough yesterday to warrant water breaks, maybe he was concerned about Sanchez fading in the final 20, especially as it was his first start of the season.

I think you're right, but Veretout still might have been a better replacement with Westwood dropping to DCM, and Adama for Gabby.

I think he'll get the benefit of doubt having had a busy summer with Colombia. Yesterday I felt he looked very good. A lot sharper on the ball than he sometimes did last season. If he's up to the pace of the Prem now he's going to be a very good asset.
But of course lasting 90 minutes would be good. He's got to know when to take a breather in games and conserve a bit. I think in a month or two we'll hopefully see him lasting the distance.
-
I thought Sanchez had a decent game yesterday and unless he was tiring, I was surprised he was taken off. He was probably one of our few players on that pitch used to playing in heat like that. I think he'll do well for us this season now he's settled in.
-

He didn't look particularly tired but it may have been pre-emptive on Timmy's part. Gana looked fucked by the end, as did a few of the other players.
-
Sanchez was offering something ,Gabby and Gestede were offering nothing so why he was removed I don't know...but it was same against United he took off Sinclair who looked bright and left Gabby (again) and Ayew on who were poor.
-
Carlos started playing a couple of those lazy passes, which he has in his locker when he's getting tired.
I really wanted to see Ayew yesterday to see how he would cope with the vision of Grealish. Sunderland is an important game. Get some goals, confidence and to see some smiles

Sanchez rarely lasts 90 minutes for us. Added to that he has had little rest this summer and it was over 30 degrees yesterday I can well understand why he went off.
-
Should he not have come off for Veretout, though, if was going to go off? Shouldn't Gabby have been sacrificed for Adama (and probably at half time)? Mitigating factors there may be, but I still don't think Sherwood had a good second half yesterday.

How can he be blameless if he took the wrong option? Amavi had a very poor second half yesterday, not sure who was meant to be covering him on the left, seemed to be Grealish and Gabby at various stages, neither of which helped much.
Guzan, Richards or even Clark should have pushed the entire back four up ten yards when Guzan got the ball in his hands, forcing him to take his time and kick it long to Gestede. Don't think we deserved a point given how poor we were in the second half mind.
-
I don't think anyone's doubting that Sherwood came off poorly yesterday - Gabby staying on the pitch by itself sums it up. Just that taking off Sanchez, in a complete vacuum, was probably justified - just everything around it was rubbish.
-

My opinion too.
Adama for Agbonlahor and Veretout (who I think has been described as being perfectly capable of playing a defensive midfield role) for Sanchez, if he had to go off at all, seem so mind-boggling obvious to me that it makes Sherwood's decisions even more irritating.
I still think we will do OK this season, and at first look it seems to me that we have bought in good players, so as long as Sherwood is capable of learning from these mistakes then he could do well.
That said, I would have hoped that Wilkins on the bench with him would have helped to avoid some of these mistakes in the first place.
-
But Wilkins is also learning about the players in the squad.
I'm not worried, it's early days with a very different team from last season. Lots of new faces in a new league. The ability is there to see with the new players, fitness will only get better with every match. Once we've settled the goals will come. Tim will drop Gabby, no doubt, he's not a stubborn type.
Although I think Gabby, Kozak and Ruddy have something to offer I'd like to see someone with a bit of class and technique on the ball and a good eye for space. Hopefully we're looking before the window shuts.

That's very heartening to read, Ian J, I was feeling rather deflated after yesterday.
And Tim hasn't bought anybody for a couple of weeks, now, so bring on the new signing!
Thought that he might have got somebody on his travels to Spain etc, last week. There's still time, though.

May be however I am not convinced about Wilkins and fitness is an equal measure as all the team in the League will get fitter and those who were thoroughly professional to start off fit will get even better.

Amavi is only partly to blame for a bad decision to dribble with the ball, but the majority of the blame goes to Guzan. He has the ball in his hands and can see the entire pitch, how close defenders are to our boys, and should not have passed it to Amavi in the first place - he made him make a quick decision that didn't need to be made...and don't get me started on their first goal, Clark's defending was abominable and he should have done much, much better.
I think Tim played Bacuna because he was aware of their pace going forward but that didn't work either. I get the feeling that Bacuna now thinks he's made it to the big time, when in reality he's very mediocre. Give Hutton a run out against Sunderland.
Gabby should start every game on the bench or in the stands until he gets rid of the excess weight and shows some desire. He should have been subbed for Traore yesterday and I didn't think Sanchez looked tired at all. He was the best player on the pitch, he seemed to be two steps ahead of everyone else and read the game superbly. If he was tiring then Veretout should have come on for him anyway.

No don't agree. Whilst I am not a fan of Guzan's distribution yesterday it was entirely Amavi's fault. He had time to receive the ball, control it and deal with it properly. He decided to beat a defender in that area.

Aftab I completely agree with your summimg up of that situation. It was not Guzan's fault in any way. Amavi made a mistake as all players do
and we move on. Guzan yesterday played very well.
-
Personally I blame Guzan more than Amavi...the ball should have been sent long but he made the decision to put one of our defenders under unnecessary pressure with just a few minutes to go. Amavi should have put his foot through it but it was a bad decision by Guzan in the first place.
With regards to Amavi, he looked dead on his feet when he completely lost his marker towards the end of the game. The overall fitness and stamina of this team is still not there yet, but coincidentally is just another reason why Guzan should have cleared long.

I agree with about 7/8 minutes left (including injury time) away from home and we have a point the last thing we need to be doing is looking to play "total football". Guzan should have held the ball, bounced it 4/5 times and wasted as much time as he could before booting it down field
-
Bugger.
Not yet in the despair bowl though. We lost but narrowly. A couple more straight losses and I will be diving straight in though :)
-
First time I have seen us live for a while so any observations are based soley on the one game.
Guzan - I come over all unecessay whenever the ball is at his feet. For their second goal there seemed to be a complete lack of tactical nous. If Bunn plays against Notts County and does OK I susect he might be playing against Sunderland.
Bacuna & Amavi - The latter had a steady first half, Bacuna is simply not a right back. Both might be better suited to a back three and they operate as wing backs.
Richards & Clark - could develop into a useful partnership.
Midfield - steady but nothing special lacking in creativity.
Grealish - clearly a player in there but would be far more effective if he had some movement up front.
Gabby & Gestade - no and not to start with. I was a big fan of Gabby in the past but thought he was awful, should have taken the chance in the first half. Getsade is an impact sub at best, Dann and Delaney are good solid centre backs and I thought handled him pretty easy. To just lump hopeful balls up to him is not very productive.
Traore - bloody hell! Just gve him the ball.
Surprised we didn't see Sinclair or Awaye come off the bench for the front two.

After a few days to reflect I'm not too down about this defeat. If Guzan and Amavi had made better decisions before the second Palace goal (and hopefully t hey have learnt from this)' then we would be celebrating a well earned draw away to a tricky side.
If we are still throwing away games in October in a similar fashion I will be less forgiving.

Well my palace supporting season ticket father in law came to see me .
He said palace were lucky and villa were so much better . We robbed that game.
We all see things differently .
He said amavi was class and gabby was useless.
