Apart from Agbonlahor, I quite like that lineup.

No Gil is a bit of a shame but a much improved front three today. Sanchez starting is great news.

So Gil hasn't made it, which is a shame. Very physical team, so perhaps unsurprising to see Veretout miss out this time as he's looked slightly short of fitness so far.

Hmmm, I don't like the look of that team at all.  What on earth has Gabby got to do to be dropped, he's been by far the worst performer up front, yet we drop Ayew instead.

Palace: McCarthy; Ward, Delaney, Dann, Souaré; McArthur, Cabaye, Zaha, Puncheon, Sako; Murray.

Subs: Bamford, Hennessey, Lee Chung-yong, Jedinak, Gayle, Mutch

..and a midfield of Westwood and Sanchez is going to be both weak and uncreative.  2-0 Palace.

Just noticed Veretout on the bench, too. That's a shame, I thought he has looked quite promising. He could certainly use the time on the pitch.

Still, Sanchez and Gana should keep things pretty solid on the middle.

No, no, no. Too defensive. Westwood, Sanchez AND Gana?!?! Gabby?!?! Play to win FFS. We're at Crystal Palace, not Man City!!!

Hopefully I'll be proved wrong though.

Gueye will improve things, but it's a bit much to expect him to carry the midfield by himself.  I don't rate Westwood and Sanchez at all.

Would have preferred to see Sinclair in for Gabby, but otherwise happy with that line-up, and as others have said, how badly does Gabby have to play before he's dropped. I still maintain he's got a secret dossier containing details of some past indiscretion by Sherwood.

Based on the first two games I'd have Gabby ahead of both Ayew and N'Zogbia Sinclair.

Gabby is this seasons Cleverley, as regards to being completely ineffectual, yet starting each match. I hope he rams my negativity back down my throat like Cleverley did.

No Bolaisie(sp?) for them is a good thing.

2-1 Villa. Pardew to be a twat.

Doesn't look too bad a team to me. If Gabby has a role in the side it is in one of the wider positions, he is no leader of the line. The midfield three is solid enough and shouldn't be as short of puff as we have been.

Gestede looked a bit of a clueless lump against ManU

It probably won't be all that exciting to watch but we should come away with something.

I don't mind having Gabby alongside someone like Rudy, who can hopefully win headers for him to run onto, provided Gabby is awake. Still not convinced about Dopey Sanchez.

Pardew being a twat is his default start position. He brings a new definition to the word 'smug'. Hopefully he'll headbutt one of our players or verbally abuse Sherwood and get another stadium ban so we don't have to see his punchable mug for a few weeks

Still not convinced about Dopey Sanchez.

Every time Sanchez has come on we've looked a better team. Pairing him up alongside Westwood is questionable, we really need somebody to do what Delph was good at and charge up field with the ball. Neither seem to be capable of that, maybe today's the day Gana gets more freedom to express himself.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on August 22, 2015, 02:27:16 PM
Don't think Ayew, Veretout and Sinclair can have too many complaints about sitting this one out. No hiding place for Gabby now with so many choices on the bench and Gil and Kozak in the stand, he needs to start delivering so wouldn't be surprised to see him do well today.

Gestede and Sanchez will ensure we won't be getting bullied today anyway. Not sure re the balance of the midfield three, maybe Gueye will push a bit more forward. Still think we miss a left sided centre midfielder in the squad ala Barry or Delph.

This will be a good test today. I'd expect us to be ahead of Bournemouth and behind Man Utd. Palace are at our level and have some very good players in their side

Pleased to see Sanchez and Grealish in there

Would have probably been my team of choice had Sinclair got the nod over Gabby

I think Sanchez will win over many doubters this season, he's a very good ball winner and his passing game is underrated

I'm hoping for the diamond with Gabby playing off Gestede. Theres no natural width in that team especially as Gabby can't cross a ball and Grealish is best utilised more centrally creating passing movements and being the link to Westwood and Gueye.

Also we've got a relatively strong looking bench for the first time in ages with many attacking options...

Sinclair, Veretout, Ayew, Traore

A lot stronger squad from last season, looking at that. To answer an earlier question, I suspect Gabby will need to retire in order not to make the team. As others have predicted though, today might be his good game in ten.

I'm a bit worried as they like to attack down the flanks. The midfield will all have to work hard.

Hasn't Sanchez been coming on for a tiring Veretout, who isn't yet up to speed in England? Sanchez seems to specialise in giving the ball away in critical areas. He should be issued with a vial of smelling salts to keep him alert and aware throughout games.

Agreed, very few imports start off superbly. It tends to help I think if you're a bit like Gueye, with a great engine and naturally combative because those are two essential ingredients to playing in this league.

Trouble is Gabby is an automatic starter so who is dropped for the new striker?

it's such a shame because Gabby still has pace but the potential he had to be a good PL striker has clearly not been taken advantage of. We have so much creativity in this team and little or no movement up front. And the other thing is we need some of these midfielders to get into the box and join the attack.

The midfield 3 look okay. Westwood has done okay, but his set piece delivery has been poor. Sanchez has looked very classy and Gana looks the part.
Grealish is quality.
Gabby is piss poor today, even by his standards.
Gestede hasn't had a decent ball to attack yet. High hanging balls aren't good as Palace aren't a defence that will easily be bullied.
Amavi is good.
Bacuna hasn't been very good.

Second half I'd like to see Sinclair coming on for Gabby. Still think it's a bit early for Ayew.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Match Thread

Gabby off, Ayew on at half time for me.  Then if it's still not working take Gestede off (because it forces us to keep the ball down) and give Adama half an hour.

Just seen the 1on1 Gabby missed, that's truly dire, I doubt we'll see a worse miss in the league this weekend.

That girl in the crowd then  ;)

those white pants look the part on her bass alright  :D

heat obviously playing a factor, both midfields have lots of time on the ball.

Palace looking to isolate Bacuna but any joy they have had have come down to Bacuna's mistakes rather than any good play

Ward is a red card waiting to happen, dont think he will be back out after half time

We should be ahead really, Gabby butchered a 1 on 1 and then his effort at that cross  ;D

Grealish absolute quality and Sanchez bossing midfield

Sinclair for Gabby at the break

Not sure what changes we will make if Sanchez or Gueye run out of legs, maybe Veretout playing a bit deeper

Westwood's set pieces have been bad, but apart from that he hasn't given the ball away at all, and he's hit a couple of decent crosses. So far a decent performance from a slightly more advanced position.

Sanchez has been very good.

Gabby is a joke, and needs to get on the bench and stay there. Traore, Ayew, Sinclair and Gil. All better. Why are we wasiting a position on him?

Westy has looked good further forward, Sanchez and Gana are dominating the midfield so far. Grealish and Amavi both look a class apart on the ball.

We have been the better team by far, but always look capable of giving a gal away. Grealish looks  absolute class, Sanchez looks the player he really is but we still have problems up top.

Agbonlahor should have buried that chance. We are clonking too many high balls for Gestede who is either getting nowhere near them or nodding them down for no one.

Agbon off either Sinclair or Ayew on.

Gana and Suarez is very good base. Westwood not so sure. Maybe Gil for westwood at around the 70th min to look for the winner.
Ayew for Gabby.

That's one hell of an auto-correct!

Got a bit of bite in that midfield.

They have rocked us with the changes

Is Sherwood actually watching the game, i'm not so sure.

He will counter that Gabby has got in 2-3 times purely due to his pace, and that has made them sit deeper and give Jack more time on the ball.

We all knew it would take time :( Worrying lack of chances again though....

We've replaced one of the leagues best Strikers with a guy from the Championship, it was never going to be any different, we need more upfront than that. Spend the £ and get a partner in for him ffs.

He often doesn't. It's like it takes him until 75 minutes into every match to remember that he, in fact, is the one in charge of substitutions.

Well Guzan will be dropped again now . We are in trouble already , 2 defeats in a week is very very poor

One was against Manchester United who, whilst I don't expect us to roll over and have our belly tickled every time, are famous for being quite good. I wouldn't get too concerned just yet.

Guzan you twat

If anyone wonders why we made a move for Begovic

Damn straight. That was totally his fault, dawdled when he could have gone early, then puts Amavi in the shit.

His distribution is so bad it's undermining him entirely.

Sinclair and Ayew should be on by now. Tim isn't doing well today.

No he isn't is he. Very slow to react to Pardew and left the gormless donkey on for the full 90. Bacuna and Gabby out for Sunderland. Oh hang on it's Gabby's yearly performance against them isn't it?

All over. Deserved to lose on the second half, and Sherwood deserves as much of the blame as the players. In complete control at half time, he got owned by the changes and didn't react.

Gestede, Gabby and Jack completely anonymous in the second half.

Its no coincidence that Guzan, Bacuna and Gabby are the weak links in this team and carried over from previous seasons.

Not sure if Guzan or Amavi is to blame for the fuck up...Guzan shouldn't have played that ball putting Amavi under pressure, but he should have been more aware and got rid rather than trying to beat his man.

We were 18/1. Check your facts before posting things you obviously don't know.

You're the equivalent of everything that's wrong with tabloid newspapers. You're the Louise Mensch/Katie Hopkins of this message board. Trying to create sensationalism over not a lot.

At 1-1-, and three games into the season, I thought, fuck it, go for the win, does a defeat really matter at this stage? Amavi went for it, if he beat his man, we were away. He didn't, and we fucked up. It happens. I'm happy he went to go for it, but obviously disappointed at the outcome.

Think a new striker is an absolute must. We need someone big who is also mobile. Gestede will be a good impact player against certain backlines, but Palace are pretty robust. Today was not his day.

I thought once again we ran out of steam badly. Amavi was very good first half, and poor in the second. Gana disappeared out the game. Grealish was done for after 70 minutes but that's no surprise really. Tim should have taken him off.
Gabby was a fucking abomination.
Bacuna is a liability. Today in particular was probably a game that would have suited Hutton more.

Traore looks a bit good. I think he'll be particularly useful coming off the bench for now.

I'll be honest, I think we're in for tough times again. There's some quality here but we're still lacking sorely in key areas and we seem compelled to gift the opposition goals and I don't see that changing under someone as gung-ho as Sherwood. In attack we largely look about as threatening as Woody Allen in boxing get up. We've got some real quality in Grealish, Gil and Traore, but we need someone more similar in ilk to Benteke up front. Physical and mobile.

I am not and haven't been in the "we'll be fine" camp.
I think this season will be another long hard slog, although I hope we don't get dragged into another horrible end of season scrap.

For me the problems seem to be that we don't really raise our game.
Palace were poor first half, really poor, but they turned it up second half, looked like they had a belief they would win, and were by far the better team.

We just seem to plod along. No real variation, no stepping up of the pace, no pressing.
That's what now? 7, 8 games where we have looked totally ineffective.

I am still waiting for this winning mentality to kick in.

Fuming , just disgraceful to lose like that ..WTF was Bacuna doing giving the corner away in the first place. Then the rest jesus fuck ..

That said the front 2 offered next to fuck all , Gestede might be good at heading it in but his hold up play was hopeless.

Jack first half and Adama only bright spots

Doomish nonsense lol who have you been watching last 4 years ,  yeah I'm just back from Banksy's Dismaland , there's a dark theatre there called Aston Villa where's there's a loop of games where we concede late goals . In fact it's not even a loop it's just a very long dvd .

In that case, passing to Amavi was pointless. A long ball would have cut them all out and saved risking our draw on the edge of our own box.
