Twisted, volleyed and scored... and from the moment the ball hit the back of the net you knew that his Villa Park days were numbered.

I was on my honeymoon, the missus don't like football.

Went to a bar before the game, settled down in nice seats and was really excited as the beers went down. Half hour in, the fecking missus says she aint feeling too well, knew she was pist off but such is life so consoled her and got on with watching the game.

Just before half time, she said she was going back to the hotel as was not well and was bored. I told her to hang on for half time and I would walk her back, the walk back was a quick march and she was not a happy bunny, saying she was going to go out on her own and couldn't believe I would want to watch football on our honeymoon!!!

Second half I had to watch in the hotel and met a lad from Leeds and an older guy from Liverpool, imagine the elation when Platty got the winner in last minute of extra time. Went up to the room, the missus was full of apologies and inviting me to bed to say sorry. Told her that Platt of Villa had scored the winning goal in last minute of game and I had only come to the room to get some money to go out celebrating with my new mates.

Great day

Love this moment:

Looking at that still picture I didn't realise the Belgian number 2 that day was Jimmy Hill.

I can still remember where I watched all the England games. The Ireland game I watched at my mate next doors, the Holland game at my dad's club, the Egypt game at my girlfriends, the Belgium game and third place play off at home, the Cameroon game in the bar after finishing playing a game of indoor cricket and the semi at my uncles house with my two uncles and girlfriend.

That goal was the highlight of a very wet two-week holiday in a woodworm infested cottage in a sh**-hole in Cornwall called Stithians.

I was in a pub in Port Isaac on holiday with ex wife and her family. Platty missed a chance not long before IIRC and Ron Atkinson, on commentary, compared it to Astle's miss in Mexico ( it was nothing of the sort).Part of my goal celebration was made up of a few fxxx off Fat Rons. I grew to like him a few years later of course.

Did you go on holiday by mistake?

I was working a student night at the old Top Spot nightclub in Redditch. I was pouring a pint of Guinness which I subsequently let flow over as I was running around the bar cheering like a madman.

I was in my last year as a student in Newcastle. I'd done the last exam of my finals on the day of the first match of that World Cup. We'd spent the subsequent weeks drinking and watching the football - 1990 is still my favourite world cup, by a mile.

When he scored that goal, I remember we all went nuts - there were five of us in our student house, and two of us were Villa fans. We then, on the final whistle, left the house to go to the local to celebrate.

One of the strongest memories i have of student years is that night, when we left our house to go to the pub, I looked up our road of terraced houses and it was like every single house was disgorging happy people doing exactly the same thing.
