Title: The Magnificent Aston Villa vs Burnley Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on May 24, 2015, 02:04:30 PM
Steer, Baker, Vlaar, Bacuna, Cleverley, Agbonlahor, Westwood, Delph, Benteke, N’Zogbia, Grealish.

Bit of a strange line up in that not much change outside of giving Steer a game. Good to see Baker

Subs: Guzan, Sinclair, Weimann, Hutton, Sanchez, Robinson, Green.

The much under-used 2-4-4 formation.

Presumably N'Zogbia at left-back?

I'd have rested more players. That's a pointless risk for me - wouldn't play Benteke or Delph especially.

Maybe. I've always wondered how he'd look as a wing back. I know he played a bit there at Newcastle very early on in his career.

I'm really surprised about this team to be honest. I understand momentum and not disrupting things too much. The fact that we shit it last week may have affected the managers thinking too. But we could have started one of the kids today and played Sinclair for example and rested Jack.

Mr Shin is by the gates to the North Stand opposite Mr Woodhall.

Strange side. Zogbia or Delph at Left back I'd imagine.
Be interesting to see how Steer copes. To be fair to Jed he'd done alright in the cups for us last season. And after some game time out on loan who knows, he might be ready to step up.

I know Zogbia has played left back before but his fitness is actually pretty terrible to be perfectly honest. He's got nothing left after 60 minutes in attacking midfield and he's now playing the position where the most stamina is probably required so I'd hazard a guess that he'll be dying on his arse before half-time. I'd be more inclined to try Delph there, but I would guess it's Zog.
Also given our fitness record with full-backs I can see why Tim doesn't want to play both Bacuna and Hutton today, in case we're left short next week.

I'd be very disappointed if it was any situation other than the manager having complete freedom to pick the team he wants.

Esp if it came to the chance of an extra 3m vs the chance of winning the FA Cup next week.

My guess it all somehow plays a part for all mangers. But the more I think about it the more I believe last weeks display has caused this. That it gives those same players a real chance to get the defeat completely out of their system and play together in what might be close to the cup final side.

I would imagine he'd be loathe to put Hutton in at left back. But honestly, even if Zogbia does okay today he will die on his arse going up and down the Wembley pitch as a full-back. It would be an enormous ask for him. We'd be asking for a mullering.

Trouble is, do we have many options right now?

The one thing for sure next week is we will go for it against Arsenal. We might lose but we won't be doing it in the manner we did vs Chelsea. I'm intrigued now to see N'Zogbia in this role. Can only assume Richardson is fucked too which is a shame.

Fun team, nice to see some youth on the bench. I wouldn't read too much into the Steer thing regarding Guzan and Given - one of them had to drop from the squad so that Jed could get a game, and they might even have just flipped a coin to see who got it. It's unimportant, really. Much more pointed is the omission of Gil - I think that has to be it for his Villa career now, sadly, and for no real reason that I can see, which is a shame.

Nevertheless, hilarious team. Should be fun.

Baker gets through today and he's starting at Wembley. Vlaar on the right of CB is the right way to go, even if it is harsh on Okore.

My guess is Given will be back in the line up next week. Sherwood came out a few weeks back saying he rated Steer, so I'd guess it's just a case of having a look.

I guess we'll know for sure this summer where any of our keepers are going to get bombed out.

I think Jores is more a case of fitness really. He's been playing through the pain barrier for a few weeks apparently. I suspect if he's fit he'll probably get the nod next week.

There really must be something that makes Sherwood think Gil isn't capable of developing the work-rate/mental strength necessary for him to succeed - because to me, those two attributes seem to be the only things that Grealish has which Gil hasn't shown. Otherwise, both seem to have quite similar strengths.

What a good job Mark Hughes has done there.

It makes you wonder what would've happened if we hadn't done that weird backflip on hiring him, allegedly because of the way he walked out on Fulham. Probably just boring mid-table stuff, but compared to the experiences of TSMs 1 and 2...

I do so love it when Zogbia goes on a dribble and forgets to take the ball with him. It's a majestic site. Reminds me of playing Super Kick Off back in the day.

It's all a bit end of seasony today. I hope we have a bit of a spark somewhere in the second half. We might as well bring on Robinson and Green. Give the two lads a go.

I'd sell Gabby.

He just represents the creeping acceptance of shitness at the club the last few years.

Spends most of his playing time coasting, doing fuck all.

Really this should be Gabby's villa park farewell game as his old contract was up at the end of this season. Unfortunately the last manager gave him a new 4 year contract.

Credit to Burnley they took there chance and have happily sat back on it for most of the game. But we don't look like upping our gears, which is not surprising really. Benteke isn't leaping like a salmon today. It's all a bit half-assed.

It's funny, because Gabby's only famous for being quick, and yet he's so shit at actual football that every attack slows down as soon as it goes anywhere near him. He needs about two minutes to take it down, look around, weigh up the options, make a decision and fuck it up. It's like passing the ball through a time-slowing vortex.

Fuck off N'Zogbia, you're absolutely pointless. You can't score, can't shoot, you're shit scared to cross the ball, in fact I'm struggling to think what it is you actually do other than wear ridiculous bloody clothes.

Today was a great opportunity to play some of the squad fillers and kids. I just don't get what he's done today

If we'd lost playing kids nobody would care. Instead we'll now be shitting it because this for the most part is the cup final team.

We've lost to all 3 relegated sides this season, 5 points out of 18. The cup final us masking another rank season.

We need to sit all the players down at the end of the season and give them an IQ test. The ones that fail to score above about 65 should be offloaded. So that's at least 10 new players we'll need.

Complete waste of an afternoon. Could have at least given some of the kids some time and the fans some excitement. Have to say the last two performances have tempered my enthusiasm for next season somewhat. Perhaps we are actually still shit.

Let's not kid ourselves. We've had 5 relegation battles in a row. The players on the whole are pretty shit. There needs to be money spent in the summer and not on risks, gambles, and £2m bit part players. The defence needs a complete overhaul for a start.

What a monumentally shite season again when you think that we have actually finished below Sunderland, Leicester and Newcastle.

Spot on.

The last two results have been a reminder of the last five years.

The club needs a massive, massive overhaul.

If something good comes out of today, that will be it, a reminder.

Losing 6-1 at Southampton, then losing limply 1-0 at home to a relegated Burnley and ending up 17th.

It is disgraceful, and the FA Cup is not going to change that.

Lowest premier league position and least number of goals scored in a top flight season. The Fans deserve an Fa Cup final win after pretty much relentless shit for half a decade. Fuck the tarquins the spoilt ******.

Sherwood must be gutted to see the majority of his cup final starting line up playing so half-cocked. More worried about not exerting themselves or getting an injury rather than actually trying to win this game.
It's a shame we don't have the depth to just start dropping a load of them after the last two games. Sunderland was shocking, but this was just half-assed. A classic pre-cup final game for a side with nothing to play for.

Today we needed to either really go for it and exorcise last week, or wrap the best players in cotton wool for the week and play the kids, in the hope of being at it next week.

Instead, we've got the worst of both worlds.

We've played our better players, managed to lose, and ensured that we go into the final with our arses in our hands.

But I am worried about next week. Our defence 😱😱

We could very easily be two down after 20 minutes - it isn't very difficult to imagine

I cant see us beating Arsenal who probably like to win a trophy this season too...
