Richardson has been the weakest link recently, so no great loss.

Really? QPR aside when he wasn't fit, I can't remember him doing anything wrong.

Gives the ball away too frequently, as he did against West Ham.

Good to see Sinclair back on the bench.

He'll replace the disappointing N'Zogbia on 67 minutes.

Think that side should beat Southampton. Hutton is reliable so I trust him fitting in on the left. He doesn't have to get too far forward as our attackers like to target the left.

I just think it is typical Man U trying take away the spotlight on Gerrard Day. Anything to get noticed.

Post by: eamonn on May 16, 2015, 12:31:06 PM
Why is Scholes even a pundit? Looks like he'd rather not be doing it, and as if it takes a huge effort to say a few words. He never did interviews as a player, as a pundit he's as humourless as Roy Keane with not much insight.

I kind of like Scholes for his dry delivery. But that doesn't mean he's a great psychologist or anything. The most talented players often aren't.
Title: Re: Southampton vs The Magnificent Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: passitsideways on May 16, 2015, 12:40:37 PM
Scholes is a terrible pundit really, only good for a bit of blunt rent-a-quoting. Shame because you'd think with a player with his level of footballing intelligence should be able to transfer a semblance of that into his analysis.

Can't win 'em all but we really need to sort a stable defence out for next season. You have to wonder whether that's an end to the us giving Vlaar a new contract talk?

I wonder whether he is fully fit. He was limping last week

Put glasses on and am astonished to learn they've scored three fucking times

Talk about complacency. This is a massive kick in the bollocks and devalues so much of the good work done leading up to this game. We deserved everything before this game and deserve everything today. This is not who we are but it shows some of the true weaknesses of some of the players. Sherwood is going to rip into this lot.

Well, things really were going too well recently. This is how Tim plays - open, up for it, win-or-lose stuff, and it got him a few hammerings against as well as for at Spurs. Really we were overdue this. The only real problem is that if they'd sacked Lambert earlier this bollocks wouldn't matter as much! If we'd just drawn that match at Hull we'd be safe by now.

No of course, you're right, but it's true that if you're as open as we are then you leave yourself exposed to attacking and give your defenders more stuff to do - i.e., you give them more opportunities to mess up, and if your name is R. Vlaar that's plenty.

I'm not complaining, I've been wishing for a manager to play this sort of football for years, even if it means a few twattings from time to time. The balls is that, had they sacked Lambert earlier, we wouldn't be in this mess where the twattings actually matter.

Once going behind it has been hard for us to get the tempo back.Given I don't think has been great , that Long goal I think his positing was suspect.3rd goal even not sure his position for that was great either.

...is the correct answer. Mind you, they've played better than this. Way better, so they're not that bad, but I think it's more the combination of players out there right now. Hutton on the left, Bacuna and Okore on the same side and no Sanchez to provide a bit of muscle in front of them.

But you're right, the defence isn't very good.

I think it comes down to pride at this point, so maybe we'll see which of them have got any.

So this summer, we need two full-backs, two centre-backs, a creative centre-midfielder, and probably a new striker.

Not something I ever thought I would find myself thinking. I hope Tim is texting a few of his old players.

Vlaar has had one of those games he has every now and again. It's why he's never played for one of the top clubs. Sherwood needs to resist the temptation to throw the baby out with the bath water though, as we've played well until this game.

Agree. Nobody saw this coming. I'd love to know what Sherwood said to them at HT and what he'll say in his post match press conference. I imagine it won't be how excellent we were.

The players aren't working hard enough, they're not pressing, they're ball-watching, standing on their heels, and making all kinds of individual mistakes. Not sure how much of that is Sherwood's fault.

Fuck sake we need Guzan back in goal and back in form. Given doesn't have it in him to be a Premier League keeper - he can't handle crosses and the rest of his game isn't good enough to mask that any more.

Vlaar shouldn't get another contract, even if he can be good, his shit displays along with his injury record surely mean he'll leave. When all fit I think we'll be OK at centre back but we desperately need some full backs this summer.

It's so lazy when the team completely shits the bed to blame it on the manager. And I mean that about any manager. Sherwood didn't send Vlaar and Okore out to do what they have done today. It's all on them.

I'm looking for a silver lining here and the only one I can come up with is that I hope this fucking makes them realize that to achieve what we have the past few weeks takes a lot of effort. Today is horrific because the team thought it was done and we were safe. And it might still turn out that way but not how it should have come together.

Given is having a horror show second half here, sad to see. Vlaar is a gutless player, we will be well rid of him in the summer. Okore isn't good enough to be first choice next season either. Scholes was scathing of our defensive line in the first half but Lowton and Senderos are probably slower than what we have on. Pacy physically strong right sided centre half is a must in the summer and another try at a decent left back obviously

Hutton has been shocking

I agree, Lowton did well at Left back earlier on so I have no idea why he went with Hutton who looked totally out of position.

Bad day for me, played slightly too high a line and Mane took the game away in a couple of minutes, think we looked shell-shocked after that.

I agree with the people saying that they're not confident in Given, I agree completely, good shot stopper but he's got no command of his box.

Yep, it will be very interesting to see if or how he has matured since his meltdown at Spurs. He's no doubt going to be honest and blunt but you can do that without turnin players against you. This is a big test for him and he won't want to undo so much of the good work they have all done together.

We desperately need Tottenham to win today as I don't fancy that defence next week. The pressure was there today - win and you're safe and we have been garbage. We haven't responded well and rather than galvanise the team the first goal served to just turn us into a mess. For next week Guzan goes in and is anywhere near fit Okore dropped for baker. As bad as Vlaar has been stick him on the right side and hopefully Richardson back for balance. Grealish really hasn't played well so needs a rest and can only get one of Hull lose.

Fucking hell Villa.
Grealish hasn't played well? Well he can't play by himself, he won about a million free kicks and barely gave the ball away. Clearly one of our better players today (not saying a lot)

If hull win today, I think I am going to spend the entirety of next week shitting bricks

I feel that too. Then I can see Burnley scoring after two minutes. Sorry. Must think positive.

If Hull lose we're safe, right?

Hull need to win to make it shit next week

Only a draw needed today to make that happen

Well we've set s negative record without Lambert's help.

Mané's hat-trick is the quickest ever. 2 minutes 45 seconds according to the commentators

Well decision number 1 has been easy. No MOTD for me tonight. The second is a tad harder. Do I drink copious amounts of rioja tonight or copious amounts of malbec ?

I'm also so gutted that Okore has turned out to be a bag of spanners. I thought he would be the one for us, he needs to fucking go back to wherever he came from, he is completely useless

Don't lay it all at the players feet we were set up badly from the start, the defence played to high up and too square against what is a very good side.

Yes but a side that had lost two straight. They aren't that good but we made them look way better than they are today.

Time for Sir Graham "You got yourselves into this mess so you...."

Not crew though, so it would not have worked.
