Title: Bournemouth
Post by: castlefields_villan on April 28, 2015, 01:55:53 PM
Relations of mine used to have a caravan at Christchurch and I spent nearly all my childhood and teenage holiday times down in Bournemouth.

Watching their game last night brought back memories of going to the old Dean Court (does anyone still call it that ?) in the 1970s - it looks a lot different now even if it does only hold less than 12k.

Anybody else here in the 48,000+ at Villa Park when we came from behind (following Ted McDougall's "classic diving header") to win 2-1.  As I remember it there were precious few Bournemouth supporters there - barely any noise when they scored - so 48,000 Villa supporters at a 3rd Division match - WOW WEE !!

As they're 99.99999% up - just crucially vital to make sure we're playing them home and away in the league next season - how many prem clubs' fans  hoping for an early or late season fixture there to make a proper weekend of it ?

I only found out the other day that it's not called Dean Court anymore. I also have good memories of playing there in 1988 in the old 2nd division. Listening to their fans on 5 Live last night it was interesting how many of them mentioned the 3rd division games against us. I was surprised at that, considering their success against Man United under Redknapp.

That game back in 1972 was a massive one at the time - a real "4" pointer at the top of the old 3rd division.

I remember them beating man utd 2-0 in the FA Cup in 1984 - I've still got the goals from the bbc news on an old VHS tape somewhere.  Although Man utd were only what I would call an average first division team then - they were FA Cup winners the year before and after - and thinking about it certainly brings a smile to my face.

Remember going down there in 1988 without a ticket. Couldn't get in for love nor money so spent the game outside with a couple of hundred villa fans.

In a strange way, when I first saw their stand/terracing (the little one, opposite the main stand) it reminded me of a miniature old Witton Lane Stand !

Without looking - anyone know how we got on there back in 1971-2 - everyone knows about the famous home win - but what about the away game - I said no looking it up !

Good luck to them, it's a nice story and hopefully we'll be playing them next year.

Did we lose away? I wasn't alive at the time, but read the Third Division Odyssey book last year.

Correct ADV - -   It was October/November time of year and they won 3-0 - so I suppose even though we went up and they didn't - they could say they beat us 4-2 on aggregate !

Bournemouth came from the old 4th division the year before and I remember the programme for our next home game having photos from the game  and describing it as "as big day for Bournemouth".

The game at Bournemouth was one of the few games I missed in our promotion season under SGT. I remember the game at Villa Park. 1-1 I think with Walters scoring a landmark goal (our so many thousandth in the league) if I remember right. When we played them in the third division would John Bond have been their manager?

I am pretty certain he was their manager then. I don't think he was that lippy at the time but maybe it went over my 9 year old head

John the gob Bond was Manager at that time.  Never liked him for his comments about the Villa prior to 75 cup final.

I think i've mentioned this before on here but we went down there in 1988. There was a massive kick a bout taking place in the park next to the ground between villa fans, if anyone remembers that.

if you watch the youtube clip of that home game in 72, the first guy you see jumping on the pitch to celebrate is a mousey haired guy in a crombie.
It was my mate Steve Hadden.
His next claim to fame, was that he had a heart attack at Villa Park last year and was given CPF and rushed to hospital.
Take it easy tomorrow Steve, win or lose, NO Heart attacks !!

Was he the one who was on the pitch and in the penalty area  a nano second after the winner went in? I always wondered how he did that so quickly.

Was that against Bradford in the LC semi 2013?

A really fit guy (in his youth) played at a county level football

I was at Dean Court for that 3rd division match on October 23 1971 when we lost 3-0. It is a game i remember fairly well, sadly for all the wrong reasons. Villa were without both regular full backs,Wright and Aitken who both injured. So  reserve full back Keith Bradley who i never rated came in and we played three centre halfs in Tiler,Turnbull and Curtis and we were torn to shreds by their forward duo of MacDougall and Boyer.

I remember the ground was in the middle of a park and the game was a sell out.The stat website i use, say the crowd was 20,305, which i must admit i find surprising as i remember it being a small ground.

The other two things i remember about the day, was that it was really warm and the walk from the station to the ground and back was one of the longest i can recall and a mob of their fans waiting for us at the station after the game.

He was. When he moved on to Norwich he took several of the Bournemouth players with him, including Phil Boyer and Mel Machin. Ted McDougall was their star player (he scored nine goals in a single FA Cup tie that season) and he was bought by Manchester United the year after, but Phil Boyer was an under rated and a more than decent strike partner. Both Boyer and McDougall were at Norwich in 1975 and played against Villa in the League Cup Final.
