Saturday May 2nd, 15:00 KO.
Massive, massive game. Everton are in great form but so are we, no reason why we can't beat them! Should have our Gabby back, but he may have to have a late fitness test.
Looking like a big crowd as well as the mad scramble for tickets on the road to Wembley continues.
2-1 Villa, with Cleverley and Benteke scoring.
-
I'm going 2-1 also.
It will be scary.
-
I'm feeling pretty confident about this game 2-0 to our Villa boys.
-
Would be happy with a point against in-form Toffees but ecstatic with a win - been a while since we did them...
Have we really on won 3 times at home this season? Jeebus
-
Have we really on won 3 times at home this season? Jeebus
Had to double check this myself! Easy to forget with the 4 cup wins at Villa Park. Saying that, winning more cup games at home than league games is a bit embarrassing - on to Tim to fix it!
-
I have a feeling there will be late winner, so will either be elation or misery.
-
3-1 win
-
I think this will be a good game for the neutral at the very least......
-
We haven't beat this lot for a while, not since that weird game where Luke Young scored the winner, I don't think.
-
We really need to get some form of positive result in this game.
-
I was hoping the Villa Park form would be sorted with Tim so we can build on this for the future. The home fixtures seemed to be kind to allow this to happen but 1 point from QPR, Stoke and Swansea have seen the same old story.
We seem to have a bit more confidence but a draw here and win v West Ham will do nicely. Hope the crowd will help
-
1-1.
Gary Shelton & Alan Biley
-
Erm, has anyone said that it's the most played fixture in the top flight yet?
-
Erm, has anyone said that it's the most played fixture in the top flight yet?
Only if you know yer history.
-
This one is really quite simple...Everton are due a loss and we're due a win. Enjoy the game! :)
edit: ...so it will probably be a draw!
-
This is massive - we really need to get our position sorted ASAP and a win on Saturday along with hopefully Liverpool, Chelsea, Southampton and West Ham helping us out over the next week will go a very long way to achieving this.
On another note - what would be the best result for Leicester and Newcastle ? The obvious draw ? I seriously think Newcastle are in trouble.
-
It's the most played fixture in top flight football, you know.......
In before the BBC
-
1-1 for me, Chris Nicholl with a rocket then an OG
-
Villa 3 Everton 1
Survival is upon us
benteke, nzogbia, jack .. merelles
-
High scoring game I think. Neither team can really defend. If there's a clean sheet either side I'd be very surprised.
3-2 Villa.
Benteke, Bacuna, Grealish.
-
Were due a win over this lot. 4-2 Villa
-
Everton have kept 2 clean sheets away from home in the league all season. Last one was at Palace 3 months ago.
We've kept 3 at home in the league, last time was Palace on New Year's day.
Nailed on 0-0 then!
-
I'll never forget the 6-2 at Villa Park...I'd settle for a repeat of that on Saturday please Tim! ;)
-
I think we will win, just, 2-1. Lukaku for them. Benteke and Weimann (coming of the bench) for us.
-
2-0. Much better defensive performance and a Benteke double to all but kill of relegation worries.

Really??? I don't think I've ever heard that before!!! ;)

Huge Villa fan - and Birmingham Bears all-rounder - Chris Woakes will make a guest appearance at the Everton game along with the T20 Blast trophy.
Birmingham Bears - the T20 team of Warwickshire Cricket Club - won the trophy on a brilliant day at Edgbaston.
Having qualified for the knockout stages, they then defeated Essex and Surrey to reach the showpiece, where they defeated Lancashire Lightning by four runs to emerge victorious.
Woakes played a key role all season and he will be on hand at our Family Funzone on May 2.
The game kicks off at 3pm but Woakes will be there for a signing session between 1-2pm.
There will also be cricket coaching by members of the club and you'll be able to have your photograph taken with the trophy.
Woakes - equally adept with bat and ball - has been a claret and blue fanatic since an early age and his all-time favourite player is Martin Laursen.
He was in the squad - along with fellow Villan Ian Bell - when the Ashes were won by England in 2013.
Woakes and Bell were pictured in the dressing room at the Oval complete with a Villa shirt hanging in the background.
And some days later they paraded the famous Urn at Villa Park to the applause of the claret and blue crowd.
Woakes is relishing the chance to meet Villa fans this weekend and joked when asked which player would make a good cricketer.
He told us: "Christian Benteke would be frightening! I wouldn't want him running down and throwing the ball down my neck!"
Birmingham Bears start their new T20 Blast campaign on May 15 when they face Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge before a home clash on May 22 at Edgbaston against Worcestershire.
-
Bricking it already.
-
Bricking it already.
This...
-
1-1.
-
Feel sick every time I think about this. Have a horrible feeling they'll get a other late winner.
Do think we can cause their defence problems though so here's hoping
-
The problem is our defence can cause its own problems without any help from the opposition.
-
Not looking forward to this at all. Hope we can nick a win! Is Hutton back for this???
-
This is a Cup Final. Martinez will have done his homework but the Villa crowd will get the boys the three points.
-
I just can't see us winning this, if we were away i'd go for a draw but we're not so
Us 1 Them 2
They've won 4/5 and took 13/15 points since getting knocked out of Europe so they're bang in form :(

-
We definitely need more defenders in the side. Cissokho for Richardson is a must for me, assuming he's properly fit.
Given - bacuna okore vlaar cissokho - cleverley Westwood Delph - grealish - gabby benteke
-
Are cissoko and hutton back for this one ?
-
no return date
-
Cissokho was on the bench v city
-
I think it'll end up a draw.
2-2
-
Everton are a strong physical side and very good on their day but then we are a different kettle of fish now. Maybe its cos I've got so conditioned to expecting to lose at home that I think we will on Saturday too. 1-3 Everton.
-
2-2.
They're playing well now and Lennon will cause us problems on the break.
I'm o.k with a draw as I fully expect us to beat West Ham......
-
2-1 home win.
-
I'm going for 2-1 to us. We're playing some decent stuff and I'm feeling positive about the weekend.
So long as we stop shooting ourselves in the foot we'll be fine.
-
I dread Lennon against Richardson. Has to be cissokho for me even if we lose attacking threat as a result
We're definitely capable of a win, though Everton are the most in form side in the league results wise. But that's been mostly at home and we're playing great stuff too. I'm sure we'll compete very well. We just need to really concentrate at the back
Our home form has got worse rather than better of late, results wise. But we could have drawn the Chelsea, Stoke and Swansea games quite easily.
Ultimately I just hope we want it more and that our high tempo game is just too much for them
But my gut instinct is that we lose before beating West Ham and Burnley and drawing w Southampton
-
Ive said this on another thread but a defence of Given Okore Senderos Vlaar and Cissokho looks a tight unit for me.
If N'Zogbia is selected he could be a winner against them in a match we desparately need to win.
-
my only prediction is that I'll be irritable, frigidity and performing any silly ritual that comes into my head.
Up the Villa.
Come on Jack, time for a goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal

I know it's aimless but I can't help but get right fu**ing agitated about the number of late goals we've conceded and lost points - Spurs, Burnley, Stoke, Swansea and ManC to name a few.
I think we've got a better chance of beating Everton than getting a draw at Southampton...and WHam and Burnley ain't gonna roll over for us.
Officially worried.
3 points essential on Saturday!
-
That's funny. I am hoping West Ham and Burnley are the games where we do it. I'd take a draw v Everton unless other results really go against us
-

You can spin that two ways though.
Good recent form, aye. But that run has to end sometime.
We have been different shades of dreadful at home against this lot in recent years.
Hope for the win, but I'd gladly take a dull 0-0, for a change.
-
I think we'll come out like a train. Villa 3 Everton 1. Barry sent off.
-
I think we'll come out like a train. Villa 3 Everton 1. Barry sent off.
I'll take that on my first visit to VP this season!
-
2-2 If we had a decent back four I would go for a win.
Fightlikelions.
-
If it's retro - perhaps we could tell Vlaar to crack one in from 40 yards, and possibly Grealish to get on the end of a cross (that should've been cleared) in the last minute to score the winner.
-

Glory hunter!

-
2-1 Benteke 36, 78
Villa park to be full and rocking. We really should be selling out for this.
Up the mighty Villa!!!
-
Hope the Villa get the 3 points here, more likely as it is Villa to get 3 points against Everton then lose to poxy WHU. Come on the Villa
-
Massive game. Hopefully a big crowd and intimidating atmosphere will help the 11 on the pitch. Interestingly a few starting XI decisions to be made: will Given get the nod, will Gabby play, who will start in midfield, how will the back 4 lineup?

Birmingham Bears hero Woakes at Toffees clash

Hutton back in training and available but Gabby still injured according to Tim @ todays press conference
-
Alan Hutton could return for the weekend clash with Everton - but the Toffees game comes too soon for Gabby Agbonlahor.
Hutton has been out with an ankle injury since coming off early in the Man Utd match at Old Trafford.
His foot was placed in a protective boot - but now the right-back is back in training ahead of the latest Villa Park encounter.
Hutton returned to the fields of Bodymoor on Wednesday, trained on Thursday too and will also be put through his paces on Friday on the eve of the game.
Then Sherwood will make a decision on his fitness ahead of the game with Roberto Martinez's men.
He said: "Alan is back in training, which is good news for us.
"He has trained the latter part of the week. He will train again on Friday.
"We will assess him again on Friday."
On his availability, he added: "We're hoping Alan puts himself in contention, yes."
The Toffees tussle won't see the return of star striker Agbonlahor, however.
The long-serving forward came off against Tottenham with a tight hamstring.
He missed the FA Cup semi-final win over Liverpool at Wembley and the narrow defeat to Man City at the Etihad Stadium.
Agbonlahor looks set to be absent against Everton but could be available against West Ham next weekend.
He added: "Gabby is still not training.
"He's done some light work. We are hoping to have him back in full training at the beginning of next week though."

3-0 Villa

Good lad.
He's now forever excused from any piss-poor showings for England on the basis he's one of us.
-
A pity about Gabby. He's got a good old record against this lot.
-
Don't you just love the way a Villa player can be touch and go for one game but still not fit a fortnight later?
-
Don't you just love the way a Villa player can be touch and go for one game but still not fit a fortnight later?
I think that was to keep 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' guessing. Hamstrings need to be treated right otherwise it will keep going.
-
Jack doing a Morley will do me.
Nice thought but can he actually shoot? I can't remember him actually having a shot despite being in fantastic positions to take one.
I just hope we don't get bullied by Everton in the same way we did by Stoke. They're a very physical side and will certainly fancy their chances to at least get a point, if not all 3. Massive game, we'll really need to be at our best and take whatever chances we get.
-

Only at the Villa.

He had three shots on target against QPR. In fact one was one of the very few times I felt he should have passed instead of shooting. ha ha.
I think before the end of the season he's gonna rifle a 20 yarder in the top corner.
-
It's all a cunning plan. Convince everyone he can't shoot so as defenders actually start showing him goal side. In reality he has a foot like a traction engine and will fire in a couple of howitzers when it really matters.
-
I could see senderos and Cissokho in the training pictures but no Kozak - not saying he wasn't there but there were plenty of pictures.
-
4-2 Benteke 2, N'zogbia, Vlaar.
-

In reality he has a foot like a traction engine...
Does he play liquid football too?
-
To avoid getting bullied it will make a massive difference assuming we retain the three in midfield. Playing a four Against Stoke and Swansea was a mistake
With gabby out, I wonder how the front three will look. Most obvious option is to go back to the Liverpool formation. But I guess he could play Sinclair left and grealish right.
-
Just watched the Everton Man U highlights
We can definitely cause that defence problems with the movement we've shown of late
But villa at home against a side that's quick on the break and good at set pieces has not been a happy recipe for us
Could definitely go either way. I predict a Desmond
-
At the back as Hutton is fit I suspect he will now go with Given Hutton Senderos Vlaar Cissokho.
-
This game is seriously worrying me. Everton, who have been crap all season, are now one of the form teams of the league just as we are about to play them. I feel, especially after last Saturdays game, we are going to be relegated by a series of misfortune. What I would give for a scrappy, boring, 1-0 home win.
-
Look at the form and it's an Everton win. Usually goes out of the window though against Everton at Villa. If there's one regular decent PL team where you'd think we'd get points against at home, it's everton. I don't care whether the stats back that up or not, it's just what I think!
Draw. and Villa to make us suffer another few weeks. 😁
-
----------- Given ----------
Hutton vlaar. Okore cissoko
--------westwood ----------
-----cleverly ---- Delph-----

-------- Benteke ------------
-
this is another swansea game for me.
everton to win, with late goals. 2-0.

I'd go along with that except maybe Bacuna for Hutton.
-
We need to play high up the pitch, high intensity for the full game to beat Everton. Easier said than done I know. We obviously need to be on our full guard for the counter attacks. I'd have 2 proper full backs in for this reason.
-
I agree on the full backs - especially cissokho
Might be a bit early for Hutton and bacuna is such a threat going fads
Whoever plays DCM will need to do some good covering and so maybe Sanchez would be a good fit after all. Id been leaning towards Westwood
-
Sanchez needs removing tomorrow at all costs. Go with westwood.
Re Bacuna good going towards too frail on the defence. See Swansea goal.

Totally agree - Leicester are playing at a very high intensity at the mo - we're doing the same. All thanks to appointing a proper man manager.
3-1 VILLA
-
I'd play:
---------- Guzan ----------
Hutton Vlaar Okore Richardson
-------- C Sanchez --------
Cleverley Delph Grealish
------ Sinclair Benteke ------
4-1-3-2, Okore over Senderos due to Lukaku's pace. Richardson gets the nod for me over Cissokho as we need our fullbacks to provide width. Also a tough call between Hutton and Bacuna, but I feel Hutton is the better all round full back so would play him.
-
I would play
Given
Hutton Vlaar Okore Cissokho
Westwood
Cleverley Delph Sinclair
Grealish
Benteke
-
I think I'd go:
Guzan
Hutton Vlaar Okore Cissokho
Sanchez
Cleverley Delph Westwood
Grealish
Benteke
Really overwhelm them in midfield, go after them, play with such high intensity that they remember they've nothing to play for and think 'sod this, they want it more than we do'. Sinclair from the bench to stretch them more if we have to.
-
I really like Sanchez, but you get the feeling a mis-placed pass or two tomorrow and the crowd might get on his back. The four in midfield worked quite well against Man City though, so he may leave him in.
-
I'd play Sinclair and Jack behind Benteke and have one of Westwood or Sanchez behind Delph and TC. I like the idea of two wide men either side of the Beast.

Thanks for that.

Let's face it he drops 1 or 2 serious clangers every game.
He's high risk.

Bugger. We're screwed.

First time post. Age 53 (going on 35) with claret & blue blood coursing through my veins. Will be making the pilgrimage to Villa Park tomorrow to exercise my vocal chords for the first time since pummelling Sunderland 6-1 due to a stint overseas & “domestic restrictions” (she's gone now so hope to be there more often !) Will be sitting in the Holte roughly where I stood as a lad for many years - can't wait ! Expecting a 2-0 win after a nervy start. Unfortunately I'll be going on my own so just wondered if any of you fine upstanding gents (or ladies?) can recommend a good place with a bit of friendly banter for a pre-match aperitiff ? Just to settle the nerves !
-
Back to winning ways tomorrow. Looking forward to this.

Welcome back to the Villa family steadfast. Aston Social (just by the church. Holte side) banter-thoughts and like minded Villa fans, Enjoy .....
-
The walk up to VP should show it in all it's splendour. The sun shining, the cherry blossom in full bloom and a high 30,000 crowd full of expectancy. It will be a good day, I feel it.
-
BBC has decreed that 'Villa were unlucky to lose at Man City'. No we weren't. We conceded 3 shite goals due to pub league defending. We have to beat Everton because we have failed to win almost every other must win game.

Welcome aboard, if your last game was the 6-1; hopefully that means you're our good luck charm - If we win I'll be buying you a season ticket!

Welcome Steadfast!
Have a great day, bring us a bit of much needed luck and 3 points, and get yer arse down to VP more often!
Come on you Villa boys!
-
This one is a bit scary. A few weeks ago I was thinking it was one we could definetly win, but now they seem to have hit a good run of form, and on their day could really dominate us. I also think that the way we lost last week might have knocked the stuffing out of us a bit. But if we play like that again here then we should be getting something, hopefully a must needed win. Having said that I will go for a draw ;)

I think Timeh will have them up for this & last week's result won't affect them. He seems to be a top class motivator/man manager.
-
Steadfast..lived just outside Hereford for 3 years and did my fuckin head in... Villa park is now great again after some years of being lost in the wilderness.. You'll love the place again as we all did in years gone by.
-
At the back as Hutton is fit I suspect he will now go with Given Hutton Senderos Vlaar Cissokho.
And Kozak up front?
-
BBC has decreed that 'Villa were unlucky to lose at Man City'. No we weren't. We conceded 3 shite goals due to pub league defending. We have to beat Everton because we have failed to win almost every other must win game.
If the linesman gets it right, then we only concede two saft goals and win the game. Very fine margins in a game we dominated for 70 minutes at a place that Bayern Munich and Barcelona are usually only capable of.
-
Fuck the whining scouse fuckers.
-
Has anyone found the obligatory post about how sad we all are from an Everton fan yet?
-
I'd play Sinclair and Jack behind Benteke and have one of Westwood or Sanchez behind Delph and TC. I like the idea of two wide men either side of the Beast.
Grealish does his best work centrally although I agree we are best placed to press on Baines and Coleman. Barry and McCarthy are a very solid deep lying partnership and Grealish wont get the freedom of the pitch like Liverpool and City gave him.
Selection choices
Given v Guzan - Given all day, Guzan needs taking out of the firing line for his own sake
Okore v Senderos - No way to bringing back in Senderos after what six months out with injury to, Okore to start after one of his better games against City
Westwood v Sanchez - Westwood was a passenger against City and we cant afford that, Sanchez to start with Westwood to replace him after 70 mins. Sanchez will be needed to compete with Lukaku in the air from their kick outs
Hutton v Bacuna - Bacuna is one of our best players going forward but Hutton is sure to start if fit.
Richardson v Cissokho - Both poor left backs, Rico was so poor defensively against City but changing both full backs is a bit much
Sinclair v Nzogbia - Nzogbia did well against City but if we are going to press them out wide then Sinclair is the better choice
----------Given
Hutton, Okore, Vlaar, Rico
---------Sanchez--------
-----Cleverley, Delph
Sinclair, Benteke, Grealish
-
I'd put cissokho in but I think Richardson will play
Toss up between nzogbia and Sinclair tho presumably Sinclair would play left and grealish right. Sinclair seems to have more goal threat. Otherwise we won't have any player bar benteke who has scored more than one league goal this season!
-
I actually thought Richardson did ok defensively v Man City and would keep him in.

He has done well , didn't do much wrong at the etihad .

Has anyone found the obligatory post about how sad we all are from an Everton fan yet?
My Everton supporting mates continually bang on about how poor numerically our away support is in comparison to theirs and how many fans they will have in the home sections tomorrow.
I have always found both home and away they are very quiet and have never understood the media obsession with the Goodison atmosphere in particular.

They do have a fantastic range of songs though, you have to hand that to them...
Ev-er-ton, Ev-er-ton, Ev-er-ton...Ev-er-ton, Ev-er-ton, Ev-er-ton, EV-ER-TON

As has been said loads of times - Everton's away support is good numerically, but they are very quiet and sit down most of the time. Give me our away support over theirs any day.
-
I actually thought Richardson did ok defensively v Man City and would keep him in.
He has done well , didn't do much wrong at the etihad .
Aside from the free kick for the second goal, his horror show opening 20 mins or so.
Positionally he is about five yards constantly ahead of where he should be as a left back in the defensive line

The support at Goodison, apart from the local derby of course, only seems to come alive when they think they have been wronged. Then it can be quite intimidating.

That was Sanchez fouling for goal 2

I think the whole team had a horrible first 20 mins to be fair. As for the second goal, it was Sanchez who lost the ball and it was Sanchez who committed the foul. As for the free kick, Guzan asked for a four man wall and Richardson was looking for the guy to the left. Granted, he should have moved in when it was obvious Kolarov was going to shoot but if Bacuna had been braver, it would not have been a goal
-
Lets hope VP is rocking and TS has them fired up ready to go high intensity from the off...a strong start and an early goal would be more than welcome and push us onto secure 3pts. I pray to McGrath that its not one of those games where it won't go in the back of the net and they get a goal on the counter.

He meant the wall, where Bacuna and Richardson were all poofy, afraid of getting hit.

Hope we can win but i think it will be a draw 1-1

Which is about every 5 minutes with them.

It suddenly sunk in this morning that we could be in the bottom 3 tonight, and now I'm bricking it.

Lawro reckons we'll win, Bill Wyman reckons we'll lose.

So am I. We could also, however, be five points away from the relegation zone with three games left to play. That would be nice.

Yes, that sounds much nicer. Let's go with that.
-
I'm confident with the team giving 110% and our backing we will achieve the right result.
-
We'll be good, they won't cope, we shall win.
4-1, Benteke (2), Delph, Hutton, van den Hauwe for them.
-

Leicester being the early game if they win that can heap further pressure on too as we will drop beneath them . Equally if we then win we go above Newcastle

I was going to say the same, I'm forever hearing about how wonderful the Everton support are but that's all I ever hear and the sound of them booing their own players when they are having a poor spell of form.

will he stay with Guzan or change to Given, anyone got any clues yet ?

The irony of calling us scruffy. Look for plenty of tracksuit bottoms tucked into socks on Witton Lane today and away shirts that have never seen the inside of a washing machine. Their hatred of us is always a pleasure to see.

Classy stuff, most of them can't get beyond one word. And we get a nice Chris Waddle reference when described as 'these'. That's from a team who have won the square route of about fuck all for 20 or more years. In fact, I can't remember when they last won or reached a major final. Another team obsessed by their superior neighbours judging by most of the comments.

I was going to say the same, from about 3 minutes in then? They get two decisions go against them and then the old scouser victim mentality kicks in. Cue loads of ironic cheers every time they get a free kick. They are by some distance the best in the league at this.

I would think he will stand by Guzan
in honour of Ben E King
-
Scousers digging out others about what they wear? Oh my.
-
Is it me, or is most of that 'article' unintelligible?
-
I might steal some of the pictures
-
Is it me, or is most of that 'article' unintelligible?
The article is bad but is that genuinely their match thread, i don't understand, can't they type more than a single word. None of it makes sense, 5 pages of total and utter pointless claptrap. Good pic of Dalian though! Pleased they don't like us even if it doesn't give any reasons why apart from the fact they're stuck in the 80s/90s when we were great.
-
Is it me, or is most of that 'article' unintelligible?
It's just a smug jumbled ramble of stuff that the writer knows Everton fans want to read.
And, of course, it's shite.
About time we beat this lot.
-
What are we expected to be paying them back for?
-
What are we expected to be paying them back for?
Winning more than them? Actually knowing our history? Who knows, must be something about playing in blue and being in the shadow of your neighbours that's makes them bitter.
-
Heading into town before going to the Sacred Heart. Not the nicest day weather wise.

Just what is their issue
The bigger you are as a football club you are, the more despised you are by other clubs' fans and we're pretty disliked.
-
They have some great pics of Villa on that thread
-
I don't hold many football team grudges but Bolton's collapse against Birmingham last year will always pee me off.
Bitter, moi?
-
I just saw Withey outside Trinity Road. Nailed on to win now
-
I can feel a little anxiety with who starts the match thread!
-
Good luck to everyone at the mighty Villa Park today, wish I could be there with you! I'll be watching the match thread with a cheeky whiskey here in Rishikesh whilst my better half tells me i'm obsessed.
-

Liverpool is a deeply stylish and fashionable city. Paris-sur-le-Mersey as nobody ever calls it. Are you telling me that your idea of style isn't bright orange women walking around Lidl in velour sweat pants and Ugg boots with their hair in rollers?
