Villa Park, 21st March, 3pm.
1-1
-
Fuck the fuckers.
-
Fuck the fuckers.
Get in!
1-0 Bacuna
-
First real test to see if the form we're in can last, as Swansea are a decent side (albeit in iffy form).
A draw wouldn't be a disaster, but with the difficulty of the April fixtures a win is probably going to be needed.
2-1 Villa, Benteke and Cleverly
-
For me it's enough to know that we'll go into the game trying to attack, trying to score goals and trying to win.
-
I've said a draw because I said a draw against WBA and Sunderland. See what I'm trying to do here?
-
3-1.
Benteke, Gabby, N'Zogbia.
-
Assume Hutton is back for this, any news on any of the other walking wounded ?
-
They don't travel well, and since Bony departed haven't been able to fully take advantage of their creativity (only 9 goals in 9 league and cup games). We'll be the more desperate side and won't let them settle on the ball. I'll go 2-0; Benteke and Sinclair.
-
Makes a change to be looking forward to the game rather than just the pub afterwards.
-
Completely agree. I was really looking forward to Sunderland and it obviously exceeded all of our expectations. Naturally we can't expect that every week, but at least now we are beginning to pick up, if nothing else the desire, purpose and energy the team will play with. And with Benteke starting to look sharp again, it gives us a genuine world class goal scoring threat up front if we can create the chances.
-
I thought they were lucky on Boxing Day to beat us, as we dominated the second half, but lacked a real cutting edge.
Its important that we win our home games with what we have coming up away from home.
-
Hope it's a big crowd at the weekend. We are starting play some nice football, and you Swansea like to knock it about. Should be good for the spectators and we need the fans to really come for these last few home games. Win those and we'll be in good shape.
-
3-1 to Aston Villa. No fucking messing.
-
3-1 Villa
Next!!
-
8-0 to Villa please, bringing my son to the game for his birthday and one of his mates is a Swansea supporter.
In reality, a draw.
-
It's going to be a very tough game, Swansea apparently played their best football of the season in the first half against Liverpool and did everything except score. We'll need to turn up for more than 45 minutes to get anything from this but it will be interesting to see how Sherwood approaches the game. There's a big possibility Monk will look to exploit our full backs with two wingers and as good as Bacuna is going forward, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hutton back for his defensive qualities.
Hard fought 2 -0 Villa win.
-
Can the thread title be edited to include "The Mighty" before Aston please?
-
Well, after calling it right last week I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that it wasn't pure luck...
I think it will be a tight affair against Swansea and Villa will win by the odd goal...1-0
The atmosphere will be electric again and Cleverley will have goosebumps on his goosebumps.
-
I have gone for a draw. Swansea are quite possibly the most unpredictable team in the Premier League.
-
Think we might nick this 1-0. Benteke scoring
-
2-0 to freescoring Aston Villa.
-
Important we keep up the momentum with a win here, especially given what we face in April.
-
I fear for us, I dread, my heart sinks etc etc oops sorry those pre match threads are behind us.
They looked quite good against Liverpool (who we beat btw) with a nice style of footy but on the basis that we need it more than them, I think we will win 3-1.
-
2-0 win. 4 wins on the spin, what is this voodoo?
-
I've gone for a Villa win, 2-1, one a piece at half time. I no longer worry about us in front of goal, but the defence should come under more pressure against Swansea than the last two opponents managed. Despite Bacuna's brilliance going forward at Sunderland, I do worry about him defensively, so I'd bring Hutton back in.
-
Worried about this one. Swansea are a good team. I'd have taken a draw had Burnley lost last week but this is a must win.
Can't call it.
-

Not that I'm normally superstitious but this - please
-
As if by magic the shopkeeper appeared.
-
Despite our recent resurgence I believe this will be a tight match with plenty of squeeky bum time!
-

Saw them against United recently and their midfield duo of Ki and Shelvey completely dominated. Both are a bit inconsistent but certainly we wont have the freedom of the park like we had at Sunderland.
Should be a good game, Sigurdsson is a very good player and needs watching.
-
I always seem to end up going to this fixture, literally with mixed results: last 3 seasons 0-2 (defensive cock-ups), 2-0 (Ireland played well, Lowton screamer, Benteke's debut goal), 1-1 (early Gabby goal then foot off the pedal Lambo stylee).
-
4-0 us. They raised their game vs Liverpool, nothing to fear here.
-
The Mighty requires enclosing in ' '.
2-0 Home win.
Benteke 16
Agbonlahor 33

Oh it won't be easy and we hve to play well. The direction will be to not let them have time on the ball. Lambert would have just played counter attack whereas we will look to win the possession battle.
-
2-0 villa. Benteke and Sinclair

That's over-egging it a tad, to be honest.

I didn't start the thread, so I'm not sure that it matters :(

Villa 2-0, The Gabster and Tekkers, Nzogbia to smile for the first time since Judith Chalmers was pale

It does. Not that I'm superstitious or anything...
The Match Thread is all yours!

Imagine taking four (4) straight wins up the M6 to the theme park. We could go there brimming with confidence and have a real go at them.
#fightlikelions
-
Don't mind as long as we get 3 points
-
Think it will be a 2-0 win and it is my first game since Benteke's Debut at Villa Park.
-

You glory hunting w****r ;)
-
1-1 and another point closer to saftey which is all we should be thinking about right now.
-
I remained positive while we were shit, now I'm trying to stay grounded now we are on the up. We are Villa!!
I'm going for a draw, hoping for a win 2-2
-

Welcome back Salsa. You've been dancing for too long.
-
Swansea seem to be pretty much floating around doing nothing much at all in the league at the moment (sorry...absolutely no intention of a piss poor pun about swans floating on a mass of water when I typed that!) and particularly toothless upfront having sold Bony. If we keep Sigurdsson and Shelvey quiet then we could be in for a pleasant afternoon...but one of those fuckers is bound to score or set one up.
2-1 Villa...even though I voted draw on the poll.
-
I have no idea I really don't. 2-2 draw
-
I've gone for a draw.
Can't see us being beaten tomorrow, hoping we can nick it, but 1-1.
-
Can't see us being beaten tomorrow
Me neither.
-
We definitely wont lose tomorrow - 100% guaranteed.
-
I'm thinking a desmond as well. I don't think Swansea are quite at the stage where they're thinking about their summer holidays, and they've got the players to give our still-to-be-properly-tested new fullback pairing some headaches. I'd honestly feel better if Hutton went into the side...but in that case, I'd probably just revise it to 1-1.
-
Entertaining draw. Which I don't think would be too bad as it keeps our unbeaten run going. Whilst April's away fixtures don't look good, no reason we can't get 4 points out of the month - beat QPR and pick up a cheeky draw somewhere.
-
I've said a draw because I said a draw against WBA and Sunderland. See what I'm trying to do here?
Thank you. This wise and good.
-
I want us over the thirty point zone ASAP and I want us to create as big a gap with the bottom three as we possibly can before the semi final. This is a very big game and we just cannot take anything for granted, it'll take a maximum effort and professionalism from everyone to get all three points. Fight for every ball lads, don't relax and don't let up.

Basically:
1. Fuck them off
2. Get into them
In any order.

Exactly Des. There can be no let-up or relaxing, we've got to be at them from first minute to last.
-
I had a dream last night that we won 2-0 with Gabby scoring both. I can feel a little flutter coming on.

The issue with bringing Hutton back is you're dropping a player who was superb in his last game. That reverting back to a first choice 11 mentality is one of the things that always pissed me off with Mon and Lambert. If the performances of players who come in as cover for injury or suspension are never going to be enough to keep them in the side how much incentive does it give them?
For me no one is undroppable and anyone who does the business keeps their spot and I think Sherwood seems to have that same attitude. He dropped Cleverley and Westwood but then they came back in and have done well so he's sticking with them whilst they're playing well, same with Nzogbia.
-
Who is responsible for the stuff on the BBC sports website as covering Sherwoods press conference Vlaar is still struggling but he helped 4th bottom Villa beat Leicester and Stoke but missed Sunderland due to suspension!!!

Westwood? - back in?

Yeah, I had a complete brainfart there, I was thinking Okore but typed Westwood, I'm really not sure how that happened.
-
I can understand mixing up Weimann and Cleverley but not really Okore and Westwood
-
1-1 Draw for me.
-
I can understand mixing up Weimann and Cleverley but not really Okore and Westwood
All I can think it was is that in my head I remembered him very publicly commenting on dropping TC and Westwood so the names just flowed together in the context of what I was typing and it just didn't click that was what I'd done. I read it back after I'd posted and I didn't see anything wrong with it either, but when it was pointed out my first thought was 'who mentioned Westwood?'
However confused anyone else is by that it's nothing on me, if I didn't know better I'd accuse a mod of sabotage but typing one thing and thinking another isn't that rare, it's like Alzheimers for the modern era.
-
The upstarts from the West of Britain need to be duly dispatched.
Minimal fuss. Send them back feathers and all.
-
Swansea will be very defensive but we'll win the Big man is Back.
-
46-0
-
I watched this crowd against Liverpool the other night and they are good. They would have got into that game better if they had someone other than Gomis upfront - he has no pace and the turning circle of the Titanic and less technique. But, we have to be worried about Sigurdsson, Routledge, Shelvey and Ki - all very good going forward. The back 5 are going to have to have a great day at the office for us to get a win here. Score draw.
-
In the away game, neither team created anything of substance for the whole game. It was just one free-kick from Sigurdsson that Guzan should have done better with.
-
There's not many goals in the Swansea team so I think if we can manage another 2 goals we'll be ok. Therefore, 2-1 with our strikers on the money again and a Gylfi pile-driver in reply.
-

This is the truth.
Gutted to come away from there with nothing.

Agreed. What a bloody miserable day that was all round. Merry Christmas!

Yep we'll need to ensure we don't give away any silly freekicks on the edge of the box. Sigurdsson can be lethal from those areas.

Us 1 Them 1
-
I think we will win but i do not think it will be as easy as a lot of Villa fans seem to think. They area decent side but since selling Bony have struggled for goals. I go for a 2-1 home win.
-
Gone for a hard fought point - I think we might struggle a bit in this game, but not so much that we will lose it. 1-1, or 2-2.
Hope I'm wrong and stuff them.
-
2-1 Villa win.

OS
Tim Sherwood insists there must be no complacency from his players - or from the fans - as Villa head into what the boss believes is a pivotal game in the season.
Sherwood admits that spirits are high at the training ground and in the stands as the claret and blues charge into Saturday's encounter on the back of three wins in all competitions.
They include two victories over the Baggies and a 4-0 thumping of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Sherwood says he will keep the minds of his players focused on the job in hand, which is to claim all three points this weekend as they eye Barclays Premier League safety.
But he also put out a heartfelt appeal to supporters, who he hopes won't get too carried away by their good run.
Sherwood wants them to scream their lungs out for the lads throughout the 90 minutes in a match he knows is of the utmost importance.
His plea comes at the perfect time, after meetings between the club and supporters.
It's been decided to make part of the Lower Holte - L7 and L8 - a special designated singing section - starting with the Swansea game.
A number of supporter groups brought the idea to Villa at a consultation session.
Supporters are encouraging other likeminded fans to help create a wall of noise.
This will be music to Sherwood's ears as he looks to make B6 a fortress.
He said: "This game is huge.
"The fans are going to be very important for us, especially this weekend.
"They can't come with the expectancy that we're going to roll teams over. We have to earn the right.
"We are going to need them with us.
"We want to make it difficult for Swansea - and the fans can help us do that.
"We cry out for them. We need them on Saturday with us to make it a real cup final atmosphere - because let's face it, it is a cup final, it's a pivotal game for us.
"If we can win this one, there is a little bit of breathing space there.
"We're by no means done. But there's that little bit of breathing space going into a long break for international duty.
"We still have a lot of hard work to do.
"The boys have responded to what I have asked them to do. We need to continue that in the home game against Swansea.
"I think it's really important that we don't rest on our laurels. There's still a lot of hard graft to get through. The boys realise that.
"It's important that we send that message out to the fans as well.
"They can't come expecting us to roll teams over 4-0 - it's not going to happen. You have to earn the right.
"We are going to need them with us. We ask them now to stick with us on Saturday because it's a very pivotal game towards our safety."
Sherwood is a big admirer of Swansea and the job Garry Monk has done to continue the free-flowing football of the Welsh side, also nurtured by the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez.
He knows exactly how they will go about their task - and he insists the claret and blues must stop them playing.
He added: "We know how they play. I thought they outplayed Liverpool the other night.
"I thought they were unlucky not to go in ahead at half-time.
"We know how they try and do things. They have a unique way of playing.
"But we just need to make sure we keep the ball off them. If they have it, we get it back as quickly as we can.
"We know we have got pace in our side that can hurt any team. We expect to hurt them on Saturday.
"If you let them play, they can hurt you. Our intention is not to let them play.
"You get higher up the field and put pressure on them. If they play through you with good play, we hold our hands up and say well done.
"But we hope and expect not to be saying that.
"They will be under immense pressure all over the field and especially higher up the field.
"If we win the ball back in their half we are only one pass away from Gabby or Christian putting the ball in the net again."
-

Love that last sentence.
Simple game, innit.
-
I'd keep the same team . Maybe Sinclair might be lucky to start.
Villa win. 3 1

Interesting development...
-
Thinking about it, I've gone for a draw, but this is the least likely result under Sherwood. We've played 5 under him so far and not drawn any. While he was at Spurs he drew only 3 of 22 games for them. He goes for the win and doesn't really worry about picking up the odd point here and there, ala McLeish and Paul Lambert.
-
What kind of attendance are we expecting tomorrow? Any ideas?
-
Holte is a virtual sell out. However the Upper Trinity is empty as usual and the Doug Upper has quite a lot of availability towards the Holte.
I'm guessing 35-36k. Swansea shifted their initial 1600 and got an additional 1300 which are on general sale.
-
He is right in that if you let them play they will. And are effective.
I remember the Villa Park game under McDoom v this lot. With his approach we made them look like Real Madrid in their pomp. Quite literally.

Me and VCTM jnr have bought tickets for the Upper Trinity (last 5 games) so look out for the Merseyside Massive tomorrow onwards - or ............... stewards in yellow jackets evicting two scallies every home game from now until May - shall I produce a bed sheet banner and hang it over the side of the stand? - Suggestions for its content anyone?

HMP Walton Family.
-
HMP Walton Family.
Must try harder !!! Us Formby types can afford decent briefs so Walton is not an option :)
-
I'm sitting in the L Trinity for the first time since I saw us draw 2-2 with Coventry when they wore that chocolate and white strip!
-
Vlaar and Senderos still injured? Vlaar doesn't deserve a new deal - so many games missed. Anyway, 3-1 win.

Vlaar and Senderos still injured? Vlaar doesn't deserve a new deal - so many games missed. Anyway, 3-1 win.
Vlaar I feel is taking the piss out of the club.
Senderos was let's face it a ridiculous waste of a squad number .
-
If Vlaar was a dog he'd have been put down months ago. I've a funny feeling he'll end up at Newcastle next season, they'll think they've signed a world-beater and will throw money at him.
-
He's been a very poor club captain. One of the worst we've had.
The World Cup display from him showed how little he's put into villa compared with his capabilities.
-
76 games out of a possible 121. Been injured for more than 1 in 3. He won't be too hard to replace, another £1m+ off the wage bill.
-
Senderos is worse , 8 games out of 34 !
-
It is unlikely that we will win 3 games on the run at home so a draw nailed on.
-

Wouldn't be a disgrace. Swansea are a very decent side IMHO.
-
Actually looking forward to the game so much that the lad and myself decided to get the train from Milton Keynes so we can have a few beers before and after the game, lets hope the ones after are not drowning our sorrows. At least we are going knowing that the team are going to be try and score a bloody goal
-
I'm sitting in the L Trinity for the first time since I saw us draw 2-2 with Coventry when they wore that chocolate and white strip!
Which was a bit shit.
;-)
-
Fancy a tutu tomorrow.
Point is o.k as long as we beat QPR.
-
Senderos looked very good when he played. He picked up a small injury and the Swiss FA made him play against what the club's medical staff thought and it obviously messed him up. I don't think he's a waste of squad member, I think the Swiss FA should be paying us compensation for every game he's missed because of their incompetence.

He's been injured twice training with the Swiss National team this season.

The same decent team that the baggies beat 2-0 pretty easily? I say we'll be only 2 points behind Albion after they lose to Man City and we beat Swansea
-
A tight 2-1 win for us.
-
Going for a loss. Maybe its the brummie in me but I simply refuse to believe good things can happen to us 4 games in a row.
-
If anybody who is going today buys a programme would you mind letting me know if there is a photo of my son in it please? Sent a photo of him with Ron Vlaar as a surprise for his birthday, he was sick last night so not up to going today, poor kid he's heartbroken this morning.

I'll probably buy one because i'll be in the Holte Suite or Pub (one of the two) so if i remember, i'll have a look and PM you.

Did you get the train from Mk for the Bournemouth cup game?
-
Actually going to this one, second game of the season. They must be doing something right at last.
-
I think there is a big dilemma today. It's not who plays in defence or what approach we take in midfield it is will I need a jumper or not?
-
When was the last time we won 4 games in a row?

If they lose to City? You can't be sure of anything with this Man City side.
Just saw that Hutton is fit again. Hope he resists playing him we need to keep the pace in the full back areas.
-
I think there is a big dilemma today. It's not who plays in defence or what approach we take in midfield it is will I need a jumper or not?
Definitely. You'll need it once the sun goes down (livin' it up)
-
Sherwood may well want to turn Villa Park into a fortress, but he'll struggle to get planning permission
-
I think there is a big dilemma today. It's not who plays in defence or what approach we take in midfield it is will I need a jumper or not?
Not going to get above 45 degrees F with a stiff breeze from NNE, so yes to the jumper, particularly if you are in the Holte.
A wooly hat might be in order as well, unless like me you are giving it legs to the train station 3 miles away having quaffed 4 pints, in which case a T shirt and a walking cane should suffice.
-
Love football at this time of the year, sun is shining, pleasant but not too warm, season is coming up to crunch point so the games are a lot more attacking and open than the hard slogs you get during the Winter months. Our crowds usually increase in the run in aswell whichever area of the table we're in, looking at today it looks good for a 36k crowd so we're slowly creeping up to getting a 40k before the season is out.
I think it will be 2-2. In normal circumstances I'd drop one of the attacking 4 but most likely would be Sinclair and it's his old club so I'd keep him in.
That will leave us more open to counter attacks and Swansea have a lot of pace in wide areas so Lowton will have his hardest game today since he came back into the team. Interested to see how he gets on.
I'm alright with a point aslong as we beat QPR. Infact 8 more points from the 5 home games will probably be enough on its own to take us to safety.
Looking forward to today's game anyway and it's a long time since I've had that feeling about one of our fixtures.
-

Ha I "live" up there most games nowadays.
We can have a friendly discussion about how brilliant Everton are nowadays. ;)

I'll probably buy one because i'll be in the Holte Suite or Pub (one of the two) so if i remember, i'll have a look and PM you.
Thanks Clampy!

I think there is a big dilemma today. It's not who plays in defence or what approach we take in midfield it is will I need a jumper or not?
Nipped out to buy a paper and the winning lottery ticket earlier.
Bastard freezing!

Holte is a virtual sell out. However the Upper Trinity is empty as usual and the Doug Upper has quite a lot of availability towards the Holte.
I'm guessing 35-36k. Swansea shifted their initial 1600 and got an additional 1300 which are on general sale.
"Ssssshhhhh"? People singing up here the other week, ffs!
mutter, grumble, bloody daytrippers

Got a tenner on 2-2 but wouldn't be too unhappy if we win.

Aah, the trusty soften-the-blow bet. Did you consult Supertom first?

Taking my son for his first ever Villa match today. Let's see if we make it through 90 minutes...

Good job that this isn't the reverse fixture today. The M5's been closed at Tewkesbury most of the morning and all traffic is been diverted onto the M50. There was about a six mile queue.

Hutton back in, otherwise the same team as last week
