To be honest, 3 points against QPR would be worth 6 given that they're direct rivals for a relegation spot. If we beat QPR and lose the other two games 4-0 I would consider it to be a good week!

QPR is definitely the most important game, maybe rest any players who are a game away from suspension or have slight knocks against Manure.

Well it's better than having it in the last week of the season - imagine having QPR, followed by Burnley and then (hopefully) a Cup Final.

Good news as far as I'm concerned. It looked like the game would be pushed back to May so it looked like slim pickings for April. Now we could be on 34 points by April 8th (well, we could be on 37 if we beat Utd too).

They've put the game on at the first available opportunity, which is the main criteria. We have to play it at some point so whats wrong with then I fail to see.

Yep. Get a morale boosting win at Man U, give QPR a battering at VP, then head for the media circus that will be Sherwood vs Spurs and give them a kicking too. Easy.

QPR have got West Brom (a) the previous Saturday, and Chelsea (h) the following Sunday.  So they get an additional rest day before their subsequent game (compared with us); but as it's Chelsea they're playing it's not a massive difference.

It's the date we'd have had the QF replay if it had been needed, so hardly the end of the world. It's not like they've pulled up a random date just to stitch us up.
Title: Re: QPR Game - re-arranged for Tuesday 7th April
Post by: CJ on March 17, 2015, 05:12:25 PM
I'm ok with the date. The danger of leaving it until later is that IF we don't get results against Manu, Spuds & Citeh we could be back in the bottom three, low on confidence and absolutely having to get results under pressure against other teams in the mix in the last week of the season. Win this and we have a bit of a cushion. Lose, of course, and we're back to square one, but playing it earlier at least gives us the opportunity to take the pressure off ourselves sooner rather than later.
Title: Re: QPR Game - re-arranged for Tuesday 7th April
Post by: joe_c on March 17, 2015, 05:36:58 PM
It's just the way football is these days. Consider that a few years ago only the third and fourth rounds had free weekends and anybody progressing to the fifth and sixth rounds would be required to rearrange the fixtures scheduled for those dates accordingly and because it affected so many teams, nobody perceived this to be a problem. UEFA's instance on the clearing the domestic decks to accommodate the all important champions league exacerbates the issue. Because we are the only team to be affected so far, (and by that I mean the only team with a firm date for a rearranged fixture) it seems people are looking for conspiracies that aren't there.
Title: Re: QPR Game - re-arranged for Tuesday 7th April

We could be in a position where a win against QPR will take us 12 clear of them with 6 to play.
Title: Re: QPR Game - re-arranged for Tuesday 7th April
Post by: cdbearsfan on March 17, 2015, 05:52:01 PM
The date seems reasonable. Both teams have a game either side so neither has an unfair advantage.

The stupid Champions League exclusivity rule has done us a favour as I wouldn't want to play them the midweek after the semi when they'd have had a blank weekend.

To me perfect timing. Results against swans and Manu and confidence still high, drop points in them two then the 2nd shittest team to build confidence back up.  Plus as its before cup allocation completed it may mean a few more in the ground.

No, we played 3 games in 11 days

We don't need to take a decision now but I think the QPR game is a must win and I'd be in favour of a bit of rotation if we can. Cleverley can't play v Man U anyway.

It's probably the third game we'll be knackered for but that's a price worth paying if we beat QPR

I'm happy the game is coming sooner rather than later. Although perhaps it's a bbc inspired conspiracy to put the game between two MANCHESTER clubs . .

I don't mind the game coming on the 7th. Win it and we can look to pull comfortably clear by burnley. Lose it and there are enough games to try and turn it around. Including a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane.

We have plenty of attacking options. I would go wih Benteke, Gabby and N'Zogbia at Man United, with Westwood coming into the midfield with Sanchez.

Against QPR we then have the option of brining Cleverley in, together with Bacuna, Sinclair and Gil.

That's enough fire power to do for QPR. If we get a positive result in the next two games, they won't care about being tired, as confidence will be through the roof.

It's a the back that is a worry. As long as Okore and Clark can stay fit. We may need Vlaar with suspensions mind. Hutton is back too.

Why are we concerned about this game again?

The main concern is getting enough defenders fit and - perhaps more importantly - clear of yellow / red card bans.
Clark's one negative for me has been his propensity to pick up yellow cards and we'd miss him if he were out.

Happy this game is now sandwiched between United and Spurs as if we get a win I fancy the confidence to get us something at Spurs. With at least a point today we'd be pretty close to safety.

I was wondering did they consider playing this on Easter Monday at all? I know it's only 48 hours after the Saturday games but a lot of the players would've had a break anyway from the two week internationals coming up and we'd get a bigger crowd than on the Tuesday evening.

Hopefully with it being being played during the Easter break it'll atttact a big crowd. The atmosphere at the Swansea game was as flat as a pancake so we need to improve on that.

Got two tickets for £30 as part of the promo deal - nailed on Villa win - my win ratio is 100% in the North Stand

I got that deal but in the Holte End Upper.

I've been in the Holte Upper less than 5 times this century but Villa have always won.

It's not shown as being on when I check the programming guide. Sky already have three football matches on at that time. I think the listings maybe incorrect, they may have just copied and pasted it from before it was postponed and not double-checked that it is actually on.

Sky list Villa v QPR highlights at 10pm.

The 2-2 was a January game as Cisse was signed the day before and predictably scored on his debut. We weren't in relegation trouble at that point of the season.

That 3-2 game back from a few seasons back....christ I was physically shaking at the end of that one. I still remember Clint Hill's strike from the edge of the box just going over the bar which was the last kick of the game. Probably would've gone down if that had gone into the top corner.

for a team that has barely won an away game today was huge for them. that said to expect them to do it twice is a bit ask and we should be more desperate than them in front of our own fans. A six point gap should be all the motivation we need to get a win. The fans will play a big role. I hope we have a good turnout and a much needed win ahead of two more really hard games.

No, WBA went for it and that was their problem. If WBA were still in the mire, they would have won that game. I bet heavily  on them to lose based on this.

This is where the random part of the league comes in: you can be playing a very different opposition team depending on when in the season you play them.

In this phase, QPR might as well go for broke, there is little to defend. They have the players to do it if things go their way.

We on the other do have something to defend in that if we maintain the status quo, we will survive.

On the balance of probabilities we will escape the drop, but the fact that we are still involved means some bad luck could still see us go down.

Our run in is better than most down there, 4 home, 3 away. 2 of the home games are against teams statistically below us and Everton and West Ham have nothing to play for.

If we can't  do enough from here to finish out of the bottom 3 with a 3 point head start and this run in the we really will deserve to go down.

I don't know Swansea are a good team it was always going to be a hard fixture, but even if we could have held on for a point it might have made a big difference to the mood, and would have been something at least.

I am less confident of this fixture after QPR's result and performance yesterday, but they are terrible travellers in general and this is the sort of game which I think Sherwood will really have the players up for.  So I think we will win, but with maybe a few nervy moments.

Not looking forward to Tuesday at all.  They're a better side than us and will be on a high now.

Speak for yourself. I can't wait for Tuesday. I heard all this stuff 2 years ago when Sunderland smashed Newcastle and beat Everton and people were predicting Armageddon when they rocked up to VP.

That was a great night under the lights and Tuesday will be too.
QPR winning the Baggies game is probably the best thing that could happen to us. They'll be confident but they're probably doomed to get pegged back again.

Sad isn't it? Our biggest game of the season now and people are only fretting over Wembley tickets. I expect a large turnout from QPR, seeing as the club have subsidised their ticket prices.

You wonder if it'd have made better sense to put this on easter Monday. Shorter recovery time I accept but a much bigger crowd.

I see Vargas went off just after scoring for QPR yesterday, he's played well at times for them this season so is that a bad injury?

QPR won't bring any more than 1500, I reckon.

For years they used to have the most pathetically small away following of all the London clubs.

The only things I can see on the QPR site is this "INITIAL ALLOCATION 530 UPPER TIER TICKETS: Adults will pay only £27 (£10 discount) for the trip to Villa Park, £24 Seniors Over 65/Under 21’s/Full Time Students/Members of the Armed Forces, £8.00 for Under 18 and £7.00 Under 8 (£5 Discount)"

And also this "INITIAL ALLOCATION 890 UPPER TIER TICKETS: Adults will pay only £27 (£10 discount) for the trip to Villa Park, £24 Seniors Over 65/Under 21’s/Full Time Students/Members of the Armed Forces, £8.00 for Under 18 and £7.00 Under 8 (£5 Discount)"

No mention of further allocations, but who knows as they can't seem to make up their mind what their allocation is.

I've had a look and they're not selling any more, probably due to the bank hols. It says that away fans can pay at the ticket office next to the away end, so looks like Paulie's right about the shit turnout from the visitors.

Apparently QPR "got lucky" as pretty much every shot was a goal according to a Baggies supporting friend who went to the match yesterday...they haven't managed an away win all season so can QPR get lucky twice with 2 away wins under their belt in 4 days?

The league have done us no favours there have they.

They've put the game on at the first available opportunity, which is the main criteria. We have to play it at some point so whats wrong with then I fail to see.

Just been looking at the fixtures for the rest of the season and Arsenal's game against Sunderland which was scheduled for the semi-final weekend has been moved to the 20th May.

They also beat Sunderland away. Ramsey's only two wins have both been away. But I agree, twice in a row is unlikely. I can't see them beating us.
Likewise I don't think much can be read into Sunderlands result. They're a fucking awful side but their record against Newcastle has actually been decent in the last few years. Even Di Canio managed to beat them. They'll probably be fuck awful again next game.

If we actually have enough players, I'd consider playing 3 in midfield. Sanchez has been poor but I think QPR is one side who he might do well against as they lack pace and can't pass it round us. This won't be a game of shadow chasing on our part.
I'd sit Sanchez and not having him doing to much chasing, just guarding in front of the CH's. If he chases the ball carrier too much he's normally a day late getting there, so he can let them try and get round him instead. I'd also have him helping the CH's deal with Zamora's aerial threat.

Sherwood has been hit very early on with the Villa injury curse. Looks like it could be Lowton Vlaar Clarke Baker across the back but I would be very tempted to play 352 with Vlaar Okore and Clarke, Lowton left and Bacuna right. Delph Sanchez and Nzogbia I'd Cleverley doesn't make it with Gabby and Benteke up top. They will come with 2 big centre forwards and have a go.

No Sinclair, Westwood or Hutton, so i'd play Grealish because Zoggy is far too inconsistent for my liking.

DF: Lowton, Vlaar, Okore, Clark
MF: Grealish/Bacuna, Cleverley, Sanchez, Delph
FW: Gil, Benteke

Never gonna happen but I like it.

Baker at LB isn't a good idea, i'd rather Cissokho back there and I don't rate him one bit, Clark first if Vlaar plays.

Sanchez wasn't too bad on Saturday, he made one really bad mistake, so did Delph and Bacuna. Delph also might be a little fatigued which is a concern.

Bacuna Okore Clark Lowton

        Gabby Benteke

Midfield is key and I'd much rather see Delph running with the ball than doing his Ray Wilkins two yard square passes. No doubt Sherwood will go for his 442 with wingers, leaving the middle completely open. The only thing that makes me think he won't is injuries but with Bacuna and Lowton pushing up we have the two best crossers at the club there to supply the attack.

Quote
Tim Sherwood looks to be without Scott Sinclair, Ashley Westwood and Alan Hutton for Tuesday's clash with QPR - but says he may take a calculated risk with a few of his returning stars.

Sherwood says the Rangers game comes too soon for Sinclair [hamstring], Westwood [hamstring] and Hutton [foot].

But several others, who he would usually have given time to build up their match fitness, may be thrown in against Chris Ramsey's side - due to the importance of the game and the "crippling" injury crisis.

On Westwood and Sinclair being fit for Tuesday, he said: "Not for tomorrow, it's too soon for them."

On the chances of seeing Hutton, he added: "No."

Discussing the options available for the B6 encounter, he continued: "To be honest, I have never known an injury list like it. But it's something you have to get on with.

"It's a case of seeing who can come in and do a job.

"A few of them are back from injury - they are medically fit but physically they are quite short. But it's a needs-must situation and some of them will be risked.

"And, as long as that player is willing to take that risk for the football club, I am happy for him to do that.

"It's boys who are clinically fit - and been passed fit by the medical staff - who probably haven't done enough training in an ideal world. But it's a needs-must situation.

"I have had a chat with a few of them. All of them to a man have said 'yes' they want to fight for the cause to keep this club in the Premier League.

"But it is a risk. There's an element of risk.

"Overall, I have seriously never seen an injury crisis like it - and I never thought I'd be one of those managers who ever moaned about injuries. But unfortunately I have to.

Some good news they will be without Vargas and Hun who both started at WBA .

I'd go

------------ Guzan ------------

Okore.        Vlaar.   Clark. Baker

Gil.     Cleverly.  Delph.  Nzogbia.

         Gabby.      Benteke.

Quote
Tim Sherwood has implored the claret and blue army to get down to Villa Park on Tuesday and cheer his team on to victory against QPR.

Sherwood made a point of hailing the enthusiasm and commitment of the supporters in the double header of games against neighbours West Brom, both matches his team won.

Now he wants another vibrant B6 for the visit of Rangers.

The boss knows the noise will be ear-shattering - and wants his players to match the passion of the supporters in a game he views as absolutely huge.

The manager says it's the biggest of the season certainly and "possibly the biggest for Villa for a number of years."

He said: "It's huge for us.

"The fans performed for us when we played against West Brom twice.

"They were huge games - the pressure was on us and we expect the same performance from our fans and hopefully they will get the same performance from the players.

"Our aim is to come out of that game on Tuesday with some breathing space between us and the bottom three.

"This is without doubt the biggest game of the season for Villa - and the biggest game possibly for a number of years for this football club.

"We plead with our fans to come and be on side. They were fantastic with us when we played West Brom in the double header.

"We need them to be exactly the same tomorrow night. If we can match the performance of the fans we will be alright.

"The nerves and anxiety have got to be there for the lads. The boys know the severity of the situation about where we are. That's natural.

"Tuesday night, Villa Park, under the lights, against QPR, to move six points clear of them - enjoy it, relish it. That's what they need to do.

"Don't be frightened to get beat. If they play with the ability they can show and they match the performance of our fans, we will win."

There is a sub-plot to Tuesday's game as Sherwood comes up against his good pal Chris Ramsey.

Sherwood, though, insists it's not about the coaching staff - it's all about the courage of the players who take to the field on the night.

He added: "I worked with Chris and he worked with me for seven years at Tottenham. We had a fantastic time.

"We get on well off the field but tomorrow is all about getting the job done for our respective teams.

"It's not about me and Chris Ramsey. It's about those players when they cross that line.

"It's time for our players to stand up and be counted. It's now time to show it.

"Have they got what it takes to stay in this Premier League? I believe they have, they need to believe they have and we need to start showing it from tomorrow."

It'll be nervous at times but a win and 3 points will be the outcome.

Benteke and a N'Zog special to edge it.

With the greatest respect, dropping a goalkeeper who catches more crosses than anybody else in the league and playing a goalkeeper who can't catch crosses against a team that plays with two big strikers and tries to cross the ball whenever possible would be an error of judgement.

I think he needs to snap the fuck out of it.

How does he think going down would be any better? "Ooh, we'd win more matches". Yeah, like Fulham fans probably thought this time last year.

It isn't a lot of fun watching us be shit week after week, everyone gets that bit, but it is football, it isn't like having an axe hanging over your head, threatening to decapitate you at any time.

I don't like losing all the time, either, but fuck the bed, all this "lets just get it over and done with" bollocks makes me want to puke up a kidney.

Shit your pants time really.

A win would be huge but really can not lose this game.If we do lose then whilst its not all over we would deserve to go down as that would be us losing to QPR twice in the season.Infact our record against the bottom 3 is played 4 and 4 points which is pretty damning as it is.

I know we are not full of world beaters but I look at our squad and beggars belief we are so poor.

Need to start as we did against Sunderland and WBA fast attacking and direct.Be nice if Nzog can regain some form as he has dropped off the last 2 games.Personally I'd start Gil but seems Sherwood thinks with the players around him we are too lightweight already to accommodate him , whilst I don't fully agree with that after watching how lightweight Newcastle looked with likes of Cabella against Sunderland I can see his thinking.

Also think it's time Vlaar came and redeemed himself , infact with our fullback issues 3-5-2 might be the best way to go

Still confident of us winning this one despite their result at the weekend.  West Brom have taken their foot of the pendle a bit, but I with a lot of work still to do I don't think Sherwood would allow us to do that.  Also, its a night game and the atmosphere at VP should be pretty rockin' which normally helps us.  As long as we attack early, use our pace and go direct to the strikers then I think we should win.  I would start with Gabby and Benteke this time in a 4-4-2. Think he went with Weinmann on Saturday because he is better at defending.  But Gabby and Benteke are in decent form and this is the sort of fixture made for them.

2-0 Villa.  Gabby and Sinclair.

Tim Sherwood says he wants "relentless pressure" for 90 minutes against QPR - and heroes to emerge in the survival battle.

Sherwood is adamant that it's time for his players to "stand up and be counted."

He wants a performance full of bravery as the claret and blues look to put six points between them and their opponents - and move higher up the Barclays Premier League table.

He said: "QPR are coming into this one on the back of a good result at West Brom. They will be very confident. They have their threats.

"We have to treat them with respect but not too much respect. It's about what Aston Villa can do on the night.

"I want relentless pressure from our team on to theirs.

"If we take our chances and get the rub of the green, we will win the game.

"We expect that Villa Park crowd to be right behind us. They will be an extra man for us.

"I think the boys realise they are good enough to win football matches. They have just got to go out there and play with a lot of confidence - and less fear.

"They can't worry about losing - and they can't be apprehensive in their performance.

"They have to go and take that huge following that will be behind us and use it to our advantage.

"It's about getting out there. I don't hide it from them - I tell them how crucial it is. We want to come away with three points.

"You try and be a hero. That's the aim.

"We want some guys to come forward and be the hero on the night.

"We know there's a lot of work to be done after this game but this is a massive platform for us."

Sherwood would prefer his side not to be in a basement battle - but he says it's now about looking forward and not back.

He added: "We all hoped we wouldn't be [in a relegation fight] - but we are realistic.

"Tim Sherwood didn't come here with a magic wand. We won five games in 25 before I came here.

"I was asked to win the same amount of games in 13. So we knew it was going to be a tough task.

"We are happy to be in the mix. It's a great opportunity for us to put six points between us and QPR on Tuesday. That's our focus.

"We think we are capable of doing it. It would jump us up the league a couple of spots and give us some breathing space above that line.

"We can't rely on others. We have to do our job and win a considerable amount of games between now and the end of the season to keep safe. That's what we expect to do."

All 7 of the people I usually ask to go down to Villa with have been unable to make this one, so I've decided today that for the first time in my life I'm going to go down on my own - tonight's one of those games I'm really feeling that I need to be there. Just bought a ticket in the Holte Lower L7.

Is this weird? I feel like more people go on their own to football than I'd think.

Not weird at all. I'm the last man standing of the group of people I used to go with. Whether that says more about what they think of me or what they think about the Villa, who knows?

If anything, I think it says more about what you think about Villa!

Today's made me realise that I am properly, properly, irreparably mad about football and that I love this club.

They all need to show up and deliver. No excuses.

15-20 years ago there used to be anything from about 8-20 of us meeting up before a game, depending on work etc. Midweek matches used to get the biggest turnout as pretty much no one would be working. I'm the only one still going regularly. So i'm a right sad bastard about the Villa.

The importance and implications of tomorrow's game seem to be growing by the minute. These creeping senses of dread don't get any easier with every passing season do they!
We should be battle hardy veterans of this nonsense.

Punch drunk more like!

Yup. I feel numb. Angry and bitter. Seeing us like this season after season. It has made football pretty joyless from January onwards each season. I hate it.

Indeed, seeing the famous old images from the positivity thread makes me feel like I now support a different club altogether

I think this will go one of two ways. It'll be a nervy encounter where neither team wants to risk too much. Or both teams will go for it. It'll be a tight one with maybe one decisive goal either way, or I can see it being a high scoring on.
As such I fancied a long odd punt so I've opted for 4-3 Villa win with Austin down as first scorer.

I am shitting it. Ramsay will know exactly how Timmy is going to play it and from what I have seen is probably a more intelligent one than our Tim. I can see them going a couple up before half time and us having no real answer to it.

Their record from Boxing Day onwards, W2 D2 L10, plus a cup defeat. One good win against a truly wank Albion doesn't suddenly change the fact that QPR are fucking shit and we are going to smash them.

doesn't that apply the other way around too? Surely Sherwood knows what Ramsey prefers as a coach. This is our home game against a team that (hard to believe sometimes I know) has been a more sank this season than us. There is no reason to be afraid. Just like games against the Albion when it looked like the sky was falling in we came up with two huge wins in a week. We have to do it again tonight.

I feel more comfortable driving late at night in a large vehicle.   The largest vehicle I have is not very quick and will take some time to find a big enough parking space so therefore I have to be at the ground early.  My location listed as Nice is for sentimental reasons.   I started posting on here from that fine, warm place and have never bothered to change it.   Give us a toot as you pass me Doc.  I have "Nationwide delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables 24/7" on the side with our company logo "The cabbages must get through" with the picture of a cabbage running, waving its leaves about.   Based on Andy Weimann.

Which was one of the strangest evenings ever. We absolutely battered them, I had to leave early because we were off later that night, got home just as we finally scored...I went into the house, picked up two cases, put them in the boot, locked up and turned the radio back on. In that time we'd gone 2-1 down and for the rest of the match Reego and Franksy, or whoever it was, were almost overcome with joy.

Paddy Power have
Villa win 23/20
Draw 23/10
QPR 5/2

Fast start, get the fans on board and we will win
Cagey start, quiet fans and I'd fancy QPR

I'd imagine something in between. I'm inclined to go draw, but this seriously can go any way.

If we hoof it up to Benteke we'll get nothing. Play it on the floor and we'll rip them a new one, especially down the right. I'd even be tempted to give Mr Cul-de-Sac a game and see if he can take advantage of a weak, slow defence. I just hope Sherwood finally finds some balance in midfield. Start solid and he can go gung-ho once we're two up.

No Gil in the squad. Quite what the fuck Joe Cole, or Weimann offer from the bench over Gil is beyond me.

Lowton benched is harsh, Bacuna and Richardson are about as full on attacking full backs as you could get. Clark and Vlaar at the back is sensible I think. Glad Cleverley and Sanchez start with Delph to give depth.

Grealish - what a night to start. Good luck son.
