This is not a thread for the merits of the appointment.
What are your expectations for Villa under Sherwood?
Mine are survival this season, mid table and safe by end of March next season and then building on that with a top half finish season after.
Also, I expect him to work out how to get Villa winning 8-10 home games a season
I don't expect tactical brilliance, or game changing analysis from him, just the ability to mould a team that can win games at home, and get into upper mid table in a couple of seasons.
And not bleat on about Spurs.
-
I can't look beyond this season until it is over and we are hopefully safe. After the last five years avoiding a relegation battle will be an achievement. After the last ten years lots of home wins would be nice. He could of course win every home game between now and the end of the season, avoid relegation and win the FA Cup. Which would be nice.
-
Avoid relegation- or be sacked
-
Safety and play with some passion.
-
I said after the Hull game that if we stuck with Lambert we'd probably go down and that if we sacked him we'd probably stay up. I still believe that. Regardless of what I think about Sherwood you usually seem to get some sort of boost when a new manager comes in. How long that lasts time will tell but I think changing manager has bought us at least 3 or 4 more points than we'd have had otherwise, probably more. Someone on here said that what we need is wins and as brief as it is Sherwood's career seems to be wins or losses with lots of goals for and against. Which has to be an improvement on draws or losses and no goals.
-
I expect us to go down this season with some reasonable doubts about the manager. I expect us to struggle in the championship and for the board to take too long to sack him.
And I ask myself how did we get here? This is not my beautiful club. Same as it ever was.
-
Keep us up and sacked by November.
-
If he keeps us up it will be a long while before he gets sacked. If we stay up then he deserves to be fully backed in the market. Only then can we start to properly judge him. Every manager needs to be allowed at least one transfer window to make something of the side he inherits. He should get that opportunity.
-
With these 'riders'...ok ?
Tim Sherwood was part of the fabric at WHL.
He had Ramsey, Ferdinand and the ground staff etc as his moral and supportive allies.
He could afford to play the "English Jose" in his brief 5 months, and he could afford to withdraw from WBA, Palace, QPR and everyone else and retain his "Mike Walker" redundancy agreement. {Look it up the young ones :D}
He has obviously come in on HIS TERMS.
The stumbling block at WBA with Peace, was that the owner wanted to retain his coaching staff, and Tim wanted Ferdinand and Ramsey...but not Glenn by that time.
Peace relented to Pulis on the same issue...so some bosses can learn....it seems.
Those are my "riders".
.............
What can we expect from Tim ?
A stranger to all our staff, coming in initially with no supportive elements. No cheerleaders and no elder statesmen who are part of the DNA of the club.
He will have to certainly adjust his personna...no more shooting off from the hip please.
Support staff ..we don't know yet.
So it looks to me that it is down to his own charisma in the dressing room and at training.
The strength of his character and the acumen in tactics to arouse a fairly decent squad from their torpor.
If it was true that Roy ruffled Gabby's feathers...then I am worried if Tim would do his Spurs' rant and get the same result.
He has no "good-cop" at the moment, whereas Paul was always the "good-cop" to the henious assistant "bad-cops" he always hid behind.
5 months as a Prem manager and a London media love-affair has projected him into a false stratosphere imo. Pardew, Pulis...didn't get that amount of man-love from the journos down sarf. And they played, or are playing with squads costing one tenth of what Tim had at his fingertips.
He is standing alone at the moment. If he remains alone, without moral and DNA support from villa, and doesn't change or even adjust his 'perceived' image.
Disaster.
What do I expect ?
A fumbling...a 'new-manager-bounce' with points. A searing close-season with a new bomb squad, and Randy can raise his price again as a result of the new obscene money.
Talked enough...off for a shower then to get to the train for a 4 hour journey.
Will post next month... ;D
-
Stay up and win the FA cup.
When you break it down to easily manageable steps like that, it's almost a formality!
-
Score some goals, trust the kids, arrogantly bring some pride and status back to the club, I expect a couple careers to abruptly end and no holding back when it comes to his opinions of ownership, referees and other clubs.
I honestly can't wait, I want some brash attitude back at the club.
-
I expect him to instruct the lazy pricks in the side to start playing to their ability or get out. I hope he tells Benteke that although he isn't in great form he still expects him to run the lines and not spit the dummy when things don't go his way and lastly i want him to get the midfielders to support the forwards in the box.
-
What we think or theorize about is not important. It is what the players make of him and they will soon show whether he is effective or not. I am very much behind him because I want fire and spirit and a winning mentality that has all but evaporated under Lambert.
I fully accept the probable paucity of managerial finesse but our problems are bigger than that. The patient needs cardiac massage not psychotherapy.
-
I expect him to get the players to believe in themselves and eachother, Play good solid football and make sure they take their opportunities and to develop a winning mentality. As far as the season is concerned stay up, finish 13th and build on that for a mid table finish the season after and depending on today's result getting us as far as possible (dreaming of Wembley) in the FA Cup.
-
Yes, I am sick of players having the power. Oh, you don't like someone with an attitude having a go at you? Why not go and sulk and play badly then? That'll endear you to the fans who know you earn their annual salary in a week.
It's been happening for a while now. Going back to that Dunne/Collins bust up in Houllier's reign, allegedly over new harder training methods. Keane's exit hints at similar i.e players not making much effort.
The players have to stand up and be counted. If someone isn't giving it then bench them. We have seen the 'manager's favourites' philosophy in the starting line up for too long (back to BFR days).
Sherwood would not have been my choice but Villadelph's comment above 'I want some brash attitude back at the club' is good and hopefully will happen. We shouldn't have to apologise for being Aston Villa.
-
job 1 - keep us up
job 2 - improvement each season.
-
Obviously I want survival this season, and hopefully then we can build in the years to come. Most of all though, I just want to see some good football and a few goals. Hopefully Sherwood can also instill some passion and determination into the group.
-
Keep us up and sacked by November.
Same.
16th place this season, horrendous start to next season, whole sorry process starts all over again.
-
Can't look beyond may. Keep us up and with some luck of the draw perhaps a cup final
-
Score forty goals, win 11 out of his last thirteen and the FA Cup. Anything less will be a failure.
-

I like your optimism :)
-
or should I say demands?
-
The first thing I expect him to do his to show the team the goal his scored from about 35 yards in the top corner in front of the Holte. It was a cracker to be fair.
-
Many of the posters here seem to assume that he learned nothing from his stint as Spurrrrrrrrs' first team coach ....
Since he has been lauded for his youth development work and seems to be well-regarded as a coach, I'm going assume some positives: that he did learn from his time in the 'top job'.
Having said that, I wonder who will come in on his coaching staff; that will be really key.
Also, if Fox is still entertaining the idea of a DoF, that appointment will also influence Sherwood's impact on us.
In the short-term, he will get us playing more directly and more purposefully. This should - barring further injury - deliver us the requisite points as long as the defence is not ignored. I say this from the evidence in Lambert's first year and the period when GMac was in charge: at both those times, we were more attack-minded and it seemed to get us the necesssary get-out-of-jail cards.
-
Belief
-
Relegation, and sacked in the summer.
Hopefully I'm wrong. But I can see both QPR and Hull doing ok-ish from now until the end of the season. I fear an increased tactical naivety and resulting heavy defeats that will destroy our confidence.
On the other side, playing a more open game may, with some luck, help us win those winnable home games we have, and that should be enough to keep us up.
-
World domination!
-
The inevitable signing of Emmanuel Adebayor next summer.
-
The inevitable signing of Emmanuel Adebayor next summer.
I was thinking that last night.
-
Nothing less than winning the FA Cup final and Premiership survival.
Or maybe I should aim low and except relegation this seasons followed by World domination for years to follow.
-
Play a formation which gets the best out of the current squad. Improve the coaching at the club.
Inspire some belief and enthusiasm in our players
Make us harder to beat
Retain our Premiership status, this is in our own hands given the home games we have left.
In the summer:
I reckon that's when the likes of Ramsey will join him when QPR bring in this so called dream Manager.
Be allowed to hold a fire sale to get rid of the deadwood.
Be given enough money to improve at least two areas of the squad. For me, central defence, centre midfield.
Make us more competitive season on season.
-
Like every Villa manager I expect him to win every match. Realistically, though, the remit is absolutely survival for this season and that's all he can focus on.
Next season? God knows what's going on with the club. Can you imagine if we're not bought this summer, but Lerner carries on with this Francis of Asissi attitude to money? I'd feel sorry for any manager if that happens. If we are bought, however, then expectations will change accordingly and Sherwood will have to go with it.
-
I'm guessing that TS's remit is as PL's was - keep the team up and at no unnecessary expense - so I can't really get too excited about this. Nothing has changed as far as running the club long enough to sell it goes, so I'm expecting very little.
-
Stay up and win the FA Cup this season. Top 6 and the FA Cup next season.
-
Keep us up and sacked by November.
This
-
Stay up and win the FA Cup this season. Top 6 and the FA Cup next season.
I reckon I'd lose interest in the FA Cup if we actually won it.
Stay up and win the FA Cup this season.
Top six and win the Europa League the season after.
Top one and win the Champions League the following year.
-
Keep us in the league and get some goals.
-
No pressure from the fans then.....
-
Stop us stinking out the league, and keep us in it.
Get us at least one day out at Wembley.
Once we've done that, we'll set the bar higher for next year.
-
Overhaul the one team ahead of us, then stay in front of the bottom three until we're safe.
-
Same as every manager. get us into the top half, then top 6, then top 4, then the title. With Cups along the way and regular forays into europe. With the odd trophy there, too. Sign some big names, restore the pride in the name Aston Villa, and make us exciting to watch.
-
I very much hope he will keep us up.
I expect us to win more home games and lose more away games. Less draws. More interesting interviews, more crosses and goals. Beyond that who knows?
-
To get closer to the potential this group is capable of.
To keep us up this season.
To restore some pride.
-
Keep us up and sacked by November.
This
So you're hoping we stay up and then are shit between August and November so he gets fired? See, I'm hoping we stay up, win the FA Cup this season and he has us in the top six by November. But each to their own I suppose.
-
If the effect of his half-time team talk is anything to go by, the Champions league at least!!.
-
Assuming Lerner doesn't find a buyer, but invests say £15-£20m in transfers:
This season: Keep us up + have a good go at the Cup.
Next season: Solid mid-table, no relegation fight.
After that: Top 8 and a cup challenge.
-
This the Second City of the country with the richest and best league in the world. (Allegedly)
We should win the European Cup. (Again)
-
Just want him to keep us up this season.
Really impressed by the half time talk today, totally different team in the second half. Loved his reaction at the second goal. I honestly think a couple of weeks and we will be seeing the real Christian Benteke back. Givens comments at the end that Sherwood said about hitting him were spot on
-

-
Our players can keep the ball comfortably and we can defend. So If the new boss can create that extra tempo like today and improve on the final ball or like today get the ball forward quicker we are going to be absolutely fine.
-
We need to stay up this season and revamp the coaching for all our teams (youth, school kids, reserves to first team) playing football to feet with quick passes. Oh and win the FA Cup.
-
Win some games, score some goals and entertain the crowd.
Get clear of relegation with a few games to spare.
Win the F.A. Cup.
Next season, identify the players we need to progress and actually sign them.
-
Ah JD there comes the rub, i don't think Lerner has any intention of spending decent money again, surely there's a multi billionaire Brummie somewhere that wants to give something back to his birthplace.
-
With the new money coming into the Premier League there may be more to spend Robbo. If we stay up and don't get a new owner next season it will be interesting to see what Lerner will invest for new players, after all they've just given Sherwood a decent contract, now the club have to support him.

Indeed, Monty.

If he can add the vaguest ounce of positive play and a bit of midfield organisation we should stay up comfortably.
I refuse to believe our squad has worse players than the likes of Leicester, Hull, QPR and Burnley, but up until now they've looked like much better teams since the end of September.
Next season will be a much bigger test as the adrenalin fuelled end to the season won't be there and he'll be starting from scratch with a squad that may already be getting bored of his motivational techniques.
I would guess at a Gregory style good start to the season and falling off badly around Christmas time, but surviving until summer 2016 where if it's ended on a downward curve he should be allowed to "pursue other opportunities"
Oh and you've got a bloody good head start in this FA cup malarkey, so winning it would win you an awful lot of goodwill, maybe even enough to get you to summer 2017.

If he wins the FA Cup he can be manager until the end of the century for me.
-
Dear timeh:
Make me actually have to book flights home this season. And if we do get to the final, give whoever the opponents are a game this time please.
That's all.
-

Under Lambert we could only keep the ball comfortably in our own half, as soon as we tried to play it forward either the passing was crap, the build up too slow, we never had enough off the ball movement, or we lost it in a tackle.
I'm hoping Sherwood will improve these aspects.

I doubt anybody could get it more wrong than Lambert. As yesterday showed, once we were free of Lambert's castrating 'tactics' we looked like a different team. It wasn't brilliant but with confidence so low, it was as good as we could have hoped for. A few more wins and we may start to see the real potential this side has. It's a very decent squad, they just need to be allowed to show it.
-
My expectations are simple, keep us up at all costs and improve year on year.
Having read some of the negative posts on here I am surprised anyone would want the job.
I am all for being realistic, but for some people the glass isn't only half empty, some fucker has a straw in it and stealing the contents.
I think he will instill some confidence and flair into a fragile team and will eke some results that will get us over the line with two matches to spare... at least.
He may not have been everyone's choice, but I think he could be the breath of fresh air that we have needed for some time.
My biggest fear is that the whingers will be out before the first ball is even kicked under his stewardship and the air of doom and gloom will continue at B6.
We all have passionate opinions about football and these are divided, however writing him off before he has begun is just ridiculous. Get behind him and see what he can do.
Even if we lose every game 5-4 this season, we can at least say that the team had started to play attacking football and discovered where the back of net is.
Which is a damn sight more than can be said for TSM 2

Simple
Keep us up this season
Build over the next 3 years so we improve each season
Have a playing style that shows us not stinking out the league for a change.
-
First time poster, I've looked at the board as a guest and thought I'd better sign up, even more so because of our new manager.
I really like Tim already, he has got me feeling hope and excitement about our great club once again with his strong words and that second half team talk must have been Churchill like because our players came out of the dressing room and looked energised with a bit more fight and bite.
I welcome Tim and really hope he succeeds with us.
-
A lively last 13 games in a similar way to the latter part of the 97/98 season would be good, but without the noble exit in the cup competition.
-
In Sherwood, we haven't got some jaded coaster who thinks its just another job or that they are too big for us. The more I think about it, we've got a young manager who will be doing everything that he can to prove himself. I'm sure he's still pinching himself that he's got this opportunity and will be very determined to make it work.
What I want to see is some semblance of a playing style, motivated players playing to their potential and young players such as Grealish and Robinson given a proper chance.
-

We've never looked as exciting over a sustained period of time since that spell in my opinion.

Not saying he can't prove to be very good for us, and I think he can keep us up, but I'm definitely aa bit sceptical about what comes after.

To be able to understand what the f*ck he's saying post match after another loss @ midnight on a Sat eve/Sun morning after we've been on last on MoTD again.
-
To stablise us. To turn into at least a solid mid-table side with the promise of more. Much will depend on who we hold onto in the summer and if we there is money to spend. But for now there is a fight just to be in the top flight next year and I can't really think beyond that.
