Good to see that he has gone with two wingers. Given that he's done that I'd have much preferred Benteke to Gabby, but we'll see how it goes.

I honestly think the twat wants us relegated. A two man midfield against 5 from Hull?

I assume he's going to expect everyone to chip in defensively, but more importantly attack their full backs with two wingers.

Finally, an attacking team.

However, he can't get everything (anything) right - no Benteke for Sinclair and Gil to play in to? Bizarre (despite him currently being a lazy git).

Fuck that. Let them worry about us (did I really just say that???). I do mean it though. Why worry about them having a 5 man midfield when we have the players we do?

Positive - no Curtis Davies to score the inevitable goal against his former team
Negative - debut striker to score the inevitable goal on his first appearance

4 5 1 with Gil behind Gabby I reckon

That may be the plan but Sinclair, Andi and Gil are hardly the type of midfielders you'd ask to fight for you in the mother of all battles. To me it looks more like 4-2 bloody 4 with Sinclair and Andi expected to do a lot of chasing.

So we finally have blokes who can put in a decent cross and drop Benteke. Still, Gabby will hopefully have his one good game every 6 months tonight.

Jelevic will probably score off his arse against us too.

Benteke and Sanchez for Weimann and Gabby in our side and we would be in with a good chance, but that side just looks like it would struggle to hold the midfield. Might be setting up to counter.

Still, if we can't score a couple against a three man defence of Paul McShane, Alex Bruce and Michael Dawson we might as well give up now.

Vlaar has been out for 5 weeks and neither Clark or Okore deserve to be dropped anyway imo.

Maybe we're planning to go with Lambert's 'new style' which was his 'old style' before he introduced his 'new style', basically bypass the midfield completely and hoof it.

Brilliant. Buy a winger. Play him. And take out your target man. The ludicrousness of dropping Benteke is matched only by the brilliance of finally dropping Cleverley
Title: Re: Hull City v Aston Villa match thread
Post by: brontebilly on February 10, 2015, 06:59:30 PM
Given, Vlaar, Bacuna, Cleverley, Benteke, Sanchez, Cole

Not many sides in the league have a bench of that quality, arguably three of our best players on it. Grealish, Richardson, Baker in the stand and Kozak, Senderos injured.

Both sides are very attacking. Hull going with two up top.

We have a midfield of midgets tonight, worried about how they might dominate us at set piece time without the likes of Benteke and Sanchez.

Gabby did play very well against these at the start of the season but huge call to leave Benteke out from Lambert

Lambert can't do right for doing wrong it seems. FWIW, Benteke needs dropping, We must start to score so Sinclair has been bought to provide some attacking threat with Gil. Clark and Okore are a team within themselves so Vlaar has to fight for his place as must Okore and Clark.

Well done, Mr Lambert.

Disagree, Gabby hasn't been anything to write home about but Benteke has been really poor. I think the difference is you might get some work rate out of Gabby, Benteke has just been plodding around. Don't get me wrong I don't want this to carry on, but a couple of sub appearances against tiring defenders might help him get his mojo back.

We are playing 4-2-3-1 with 2 HM and 4 attacking-minded players like numerous other teams in England and Europe. The problem is not the formation in itself, it is that we have no ideas about how to threaten the opponents and to score a goal.

We can look tidy in possession but I struggle to remember a team as utterly blunt up front as we are.

Why does Lambert think this is just going to get better?

"I'm not worried, the goals will come".

How is that? How are they just going to magically arrive?

Quite, we are fucking atrocious in the final third.

We are absolutely going down this season.

Seriously, you just can not go match after match looking as unlikely to score as we do and hope to stay up. Utterly hopeless, and whilst other bits of our play get better or worse over time, the main problem we have - not scoring - just seems to be there constantly.

How on earth do our glorious leaders think this is going to change?

We have forwards who have shown that they can be effective in the past, now doing nothing. It was all down to a lack of creative players to get the ball to the forwards, apparently, so we've signed two pretty good-seeming players and we still do nothing. This solution having failed, Lambert's new idea is that goals happen by themselves, so they'll happen eventually for us.

His awfulness shines bright as a supernova, and everyone in the world can see it - everyone, that is, except one guy.

I swear, our only attacking option is to pass it sideways for a minute and then Sissoko lump it 50 yards diagonally into space.

They're clapping that at Hull.  They've been worse than us.

Lambert needs to change that around at half time.  Benteke on, Weimann off.  Push Gil further up field with Delph and Westwood covering.

Get sinclair in the game a bit too and stop the aimless passing followed by a witless hoof of a cross.

I laughed a few weeks ago when someone suggested we get Sherwood but now...

You know what, I'd take him too. His tactical acumen isn't great, but he gets players trying very hard for him and his stylistic instincts are better than Lambert (Lambert, of course, having no stylistic instincts).

I am starting to think it is actually too late to achieve anything by getting rid of Lambert.
Lambert is having literally zero positive effect on the team.  Any improvement on that from a new manager would help.  It might all come down to a point or two.  Or even goal difference.

We're too weak in midfield, Sinclair is offering nothing, Gil is playing too deep, Delph is being a tart, Weimann is a one armed taxi driver with crabs and Gabby is doing his best to keep warm by using the two central defenders as a wind block.

Has Lambert ordered the players that they can only enter the Hull penalty area one at a time? We're playing far too deep. Get Sinclair off and bring on Sanchez, take Andi off and bring on Benteke. It's our only hope to get players forward.

God we are truly awful. Why the hell does Lamberk think that Agbonlanought is a preferable option to Benteke? Surely we're set up for him with Gil and Sinclair on although Gil is too deep for. me.

During that half I counted 8 times when the ball was hit long and every time one of their defenders headed it clear. I didn't even start counting until about 20 minutes in. I think Benteke would have won most of those. Ok, he hasn't been in great form recently but Lambert should use that by firing him up because now we REALLY need someone to step up to the plate. Go on lad, make yourself a hero. But no, this is Lamberk so he'll no doubt mumble some unintelligible drivel and wave him on.

The problem isn't even that we're losing.

What I mean is, we've gone behind to a deflected goal, there was a certain amount of bad luck involved in that.

What that doesn't change, though, is the fact that Hull are a truly abysmal side, they are utterly awful, and at no point in this first half, despite having 75% possession for the first 30 minutes, and despite having plenty of the ball throughout, have we looked even remotely like scoring.

It just happens week after week, and it is not going to suddenly change of its own accord.

I just wish these irresponsible fucking morons would realise it.

I have said it for the last three seasons about this time so I might as well say it again.   What we are enduring is worse than relegation.   Putting up with this level of performance year in year out is worse than being in the Championship.   We are being humiliated week after week and we have an owner who does not want to own us, a CEO who thinks we are baying for blood, and players who refusing to take it seriously.   It does not get any worse than this.

Have either keeper even made a save? Hull are absolutely woeful too lets be honest but at least their front two are physically competing and give our defenders a game of it.

Roy Keane had a point about brothels and ten grand.

With the exception of Clark, Gil and Okore to an extent the rest of our players have been hopeless. Our full backs are pathetic in the opposition half, our passing in midfield is so inoffensive, slow and laboured. Movement non existent and front two have been a disgrace. The game has passed Sinclair by but to be fair I feel for any left sided player playing ahead of Cissokho.

Benteke has to come in and will do for Weimann. I suspect Vlaar will too for Cissokho and Clark will move to the left. Not a change I would make but can see Lambert opting for his experience.

If we dont get a point at least against these, we deserve to go down

I'm also at the point where I wish I could turn back time, forego the optimism of the early Lerner/MON years, take the relegation that would have come probably in that first O'Leary-less season and now at least be supporting a club on the up.  As it is, as bad as things are now, I know that they are going to get worse. Relegation followed by the clueless Lerner imposing a whole new round of austerity when he eventually gets his brain around what relegation means financially.

The whole club is a joke.

Honestly who cares.  I would literally take any manager who'd got so much as his Scouts camp fire making badge.

I reckon most clubs would take Benteke, Gil and Guzan off us.  A few would take Okore, Delph and even Hutton too.

How Lambert is managing to get the least possible out of those players, and all the others, is unbelievable.

I can't help but think that maybe if we had someone we could teach to take corners (and free kicks), we'd have a better chance of scoring?

Fuck this, its time these players man up and stop hiding behind a terrible manager. I don't care who manages the club but one thing for sure you go out on that pitch and show some commitment and desire, show some ability to pass to a team mate and use your own initiative to create and score.

Manager or not, you're paid to play football so start showing me you're footballers!!!

The managers crap, we've heard it for years but these guys on the pitch are absolutely pathetic. A disgusting bunch of prima donnas. Find your balls the lot of you and start playing for the fans.

Is an impossible thing to organise and therefore there's no point even considering it. I am afraid the fans will start to speak in the only way they can which will be to drift away from the club, one by one. This will do us far more harm, but at the end of the day its a pastime and over the last few years its been an expensive exercise for repeated misery.

But don't you get it? It's all being counter-intuitive, see. In the same way that you can easily build a top side just by signing lots of young players and watching them gradually become world class, similarly you can ensure long-term success and stability by appointing a manager and then steadfastly refusing to sack him, no matter how terrible the football or the results.

How has Benteke missed there!
To be fair, it was a brilliant save.

More importantly, why does every one of our corners end up with three Hull players running towards our penalty area?

We've protested for far less than this, yet we've meekly allowed this to continue all this season. Its a mixture of disbelief and probably pure denial, but come the inevitable we'll be weeping away like the Newcastle fans at Villa Park and wondering how it was we went down.

Worst goal difference in the league by 4 now. Anyone mentioned that yet?

I did when it was 2.

Not updated the growing pile of shite accumulating around the place.

I'm sick to death of Cissohko and Hutton attacking-wise. Hutton and his shit floaty crosses. Cissohko with those little passes back to whoever is closest.arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

"What a strike! Completely out of context with the game Ashley Westwood pings an absolute beauty from 25 yards, Allan McGregor beats it out and then somehow gets up to turn over Christian Benteke's follow-up. It's not your day Villa. Not your season. Not your era..."

Thanks BBC.

I wonder what the Shunammite thinks of the "performance" tonight?

He won't find out until his weekly phone sex  with chief plank Lambert, then as long as it doesn't take up more than 10 minutes of his day he won't be arsed. Fox can deal with any fall out, he's the hired yes man, it's what he's paid to do.

Sinclair overweight and dreadful. Joe Cole topping up his pension. Delph dreadful, Gabby world class dreadful and neither full back can cross a ball to save their life.

Amazingly, Darren Bent has made one and scored one tonight for Derby, both out of nothing.

Because non of them get past the first man.

No league games for a while.  Perfect timing to get a new manager.

Plus six very winable games coming next (new manager bounce presumed).

That doesn't answer the question though. Even if they do head the ball straight out (which they invariably do), why is always to one of their teammates, under no pressure who is free to stroll half the length of the pitch?

It's not like we pack the box, our players must be somewhere.

Sack Lambert or get relegated. Simple as.

Sadly I think it too late whether we sack him or not. The squad is not good enough - mentally or technically. Depressing times.

Disagree about 'technically', they're easily sufficiently proficient to be nowhere near the arse end of the table. Mentally, that's a different matter. Anybody with even the tiniest amount of professional pride would find this demoralising. Can somebody pick them up? I hope so, and soon.
