Title: Aston Villa vs Chelsea Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on February 07, 2015, 02:02:15 PM
Villa: Guzan, Hutton, Okore, Clark, Cissokho, Westwood, Delph, Cleverley, Agbonlahor, Weimann, Gil.

Subs: Given, Vlaar, Bacuna, Sinclair, Cole, Benteke, Sanchez.

WOW!! So scared now

Well, that's a bit of an odd team. All about the counter-attack, but Benteke's a great counter-attack player because you can get an out-ball to him and he can hold it up.

Also, there's definitely some clause about Cleverley having to play every match. This is ridiculous.

The thing that persuades me he's a bit of a chancer is the way he flits from idea to (bad) idea.

Plays a high line against electric pace and trickery away at Arsenal.  Then seemigly goes defensive at home to Chelsea.

What you can say is that he has some balls to drop Benteke and Sanchez who were both awful last time out.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Chelsea Match Thread
Post by: Rudy Can't Fail on February 07, 2015, 02:43:05 PM
Mourinho must be furious. Probably spent all week getting his defence ready to close down Benteke and to find out an hour before the game we're not going to play him. He's probably thinking if I'd known that I could have had the week off.

Yes, but as bang average as Tom Cleverly appears to be, I've rarely seen a worse performance than Sanchez last week.  He looked pissed.

Given that Cleverley joined at the very last minute in the summer you almost have to wonder if playing time was assured to convince him to join us. It's crazy how he never gets dropped.

We still haven't really worked their keeper, but we haven't been outclassed. Our passing is improved in terms of trying to get forwards I must say. Chelsea can turn it up a notch or two I'd imagine but we look like we could score if we can just link it up right. Gil's been the highlight for me. We need to get gabby or Weimann off you can't play with 2 forwards who have zero chemistry they don't link up at all. That said we just don't get enough support into the box , how can you have 3 CM's and not one can make a run into the box ?

If we played this well against most sides we'd be nowhere the relegation zone. We've pushed Chelsea back and had a go. Clearly there is massive quality issues in the final third and we continue to rely on Hutton and Cissokho to offer width which remains bewildering. Especially Cissokho who offers nothing once he gets the ball.

We've had a smattering of half-chances and quite a few balls into the area/the edge of the area. Of course, nobody would be guaranteed goals, and I'd rather we had a more physical and tall forward than Defoe, but not buying a forward at all when we haven't scored since Chamberlain resigned is utter insanity.

With a touch of luck, Sinclair will hopefully alleviate this over-reliance on the full-backs. Gil and Hutton look like they could form a fair old threat down the right (although I feel we might be missing s trick by not playing Gil in what Lambert likes to call the 'No.10' position).

Defoe wouldn't score any for us because we don't create chances. It's not so much the strikers as the way we play. Not quite enough urgency and intent for me.

Well, maybe he would. I do like Defoe but I really think it's our overly patient build up. Our midfielders don't do enough going forwards. Our strikers are always isolated and feeding off scratchy little half chances on the edge of the box.

Defoe is 39 and cost £30 million. Or something else like that Lerner will never fund.

Eh? He's 32 and cost around £2m with Altidore going to Toronto

Defoe made the goal for himself.
Hull should be 2 up against Man City.
Leicester look strong against Palace.

It will be interesting to see the table tonight.

And I don't for one minute believe we didn't go for Defoe because he wouldn't fit in with our style of play. We didn't go for him because we wouldn't pay his wages. Which is why we find ourselves in this mess in the first place.

As it stands a point for Burnley tomorrow and we are in the bottom 3. Worst goals for and worst GD in the league.

Bottom three might ginger up Lerner and Fox about removing Lambert

Push Gil further up and he'll score.

That may be true, but push him further up and nobody will get the ball to him, as the only player getting the ball to the front is Gil.

I think I have a plan. Tell Gil to play in midfield AND up front. Our creativity and goalscoring problems solved!

Dream on. It'll all be about how 'instability' would be bad for the team. Which it might be. God, what a mess we've got ourselves in.

At least Drogba's been pretty bad, so you know he'll score.

He should have retired, Remy will surely be coming in.

I must be the only one but bar one run havent been impressed by Gil. Gabby is actually showing for the ball ok but his confidence is on the floor. His header and later running the ball out of play for a goal kick sums it up for us. Westwood and our two centre halves have been very good. Weimann looks dangerous, standard abysmal touch when in a good position at one stage however. Cleverley is gutless, sick of watching him play every single pass backwards.

We have players to bring in so half time is long enough to be watching some of them. Bacuna for Cleverley for definite and Benteke will need to come in too
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Chelsea Match Thread
Post by: Nelly on February 07, 2015, 04:04:12 PM
I know he gets a lot of stick but Cleverley has been pretty anonymous for me. The only times I've noticed him are when he's run into trouble and gives it away.

Losing to Mourinho always pisses me off. Lambert can fuck off and take Cleverley with him. A dreadful player. I thought we played ok today. Low points were Cleverley, their jammy winner, Cleverley, seeing Lambert in the position of Villa manager, Lambert substitution timing, Cleverley and Cleverley. Fuck off Chelsea
