That's two pretty poor sides to be honest.

Post by: Monty on December 02, 2014, 07:17:19 PM
I don't really see the point of signing Cleverley, whose reputation was built-up as an attacking midfielder at Wigan only to be battered by being played out-of-position as one of a defensive two alongside the none-too-athletic Michael Carrick, and then playing him as one of a defensive two with Ashley Westwood, who explicitly says that Michael Carrick is the model for his own style of play. What's the point of that?

So Robinson doesn't even make the bench tonight.  What was the point of recalling him? Better to have left him at Preston unless he was going to actually play some part in the line up.

Westwood , Cole and Cleverley in midfield?......he hasn't got a clue has he?

Can't see a win with that team, should have played Sanchez instead of Gabby, and maybe even Bacuna instead of Westwood.

Paper thin midfield. Nice one Lambert

Our formation always strikes me as 'Bradford' in that we chuck 3 strikers on every game with nobody to create chances except those players themselves. Let's face it, those three are not going to do that.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: tom jennings III on December 02, 2014, 07:29:15 PM
That is pretty much the best side given the players available I think, if you take into account the fact that Lambert loves playing Gabs and Weimman wide. At least one of Gabby or Weimann deserve to be dropped but never gonna happen.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on December 02, 2014, 07:29:51 PM
Ledley is missing for them.

Think Lambert has been too ambitious in his selection. With Sanchez in there we should easily dominate the Palace two of Jedinak and McArthur.

Gabby should be able to get some joy out of Kelly. Huge night for the club and manager.

I have concerns about midfield too but the fact is we have scored so few goals he has to do something. At least there is adventure in the air.

We didn't need a midfield anyway. All we'll do is get everyone but Benteke behind the ball and lump it up to him.

Around 2300 Villa down there, on a Tuesday night, 3 days after another away game when we haven't won for so long is nothing short of superb. Especially when down there is Selhurst Park! I bet most of them had to start off their journey yesterday!

Cleverley rarely wastes the ball. We need to push him up, get him closer to the forwards. There's a good player there, but he's being kept so deep, or too wide for us.
He has an 88% pass completion rate (36th best in the league, and best in our team comfortably). He can pick a pass and has a bit of vision. Why don't we push him up to where Cole would be playing? But of course that's too logical for Lambert.

Why the fuck would Benteke want to stay another season playing with this lot...he'll be off in the summer with the other 2

A couple of half decent games and if he's got any sense he'll be off with Delph and Vlaar.  Who needs relegation on your CV if you can avoid it.

I think this game is gonna cry out for N'Zogbia or Grealish before too long

Gabby is playing up top. So we need some more width / quality wide

Quality and N'Zogbia are words that do not belong in the same sentence. He was so bad against Southampton I actually felt almost sorry for him

Very good score and I do think we can get another

but we'll need to. The half finished better than it started but we still look like we've got several mistakes in us

The shape isn't really working as it just gets wide to Cleverley and Weimann and they generally don't have the avenues to progress it

Cissokho was in complete panic mode. He might need a Kalms at half time or something

The problem 2nd half will be be the usual one..i. e..We don't believe we can win games anymore. Even the players seem to resign their selves to the fact that a draw will do. That's were a good manager would come into his own by filling the players with the belief that we can win away at Crystal Palace...!!

Weimann off and Grealish on.
Gabby playing off Benteke
Grealish dropping off and finding space where he can to give Westwood, Sanchez and Cleverley some easier forward options.

Can't believe this 67% possession. , our pass completion stat is also 81% compared to Palace 60% and  our tackle success is at 81% compared to 71%

the guy who does these stats must be drunk! or maybe Lambert is right

I thought we were excellent , let's go again!

We're playing very well considering we're playing with nine men. Gabbys useless and weimann less than useless, brilliant goal by Benteke.

Palace are just as bad as us, if not worse.  Surely we can hang on this time.

They are absolutely battering us in fairness. Dann was shocking for Benteke's chance and goal. Pub league defending.

Clark has been superb but has started hoofing it last 10 mins. Okore is struggling with the pace a bit tonight. Hutton is struggling but Cissokho is getting destroyed. Guzan after the early mistake hasnt exactly been a calming influence.

Westwood apart from set pieces has offered zero, his twin Cleverley is no better so far. Sanchez has made us a lot more solid in there. Daft decision not to start him.

Benteke took 25mins or so to wakeup but has looked a different level since. Gabby and Weimann, predictably awful.

Lowton or Richardson perhaps to come in and protect one of our full backs. Richardson hasnt impressed me at all in his recent appearances though.

Would leave it a bit longer before bringing Grealish in. For all Gabby's faults surely he can use his pace more in the second half as Palace come forward more.

If we win the upside is 3 points, the downside Lambert will continue to hang on. Until we scored I thought he looked like he knew he was in the last chance saloon.

What I don't get is surely, watching that, Lambert could see that Gabby and Weimann are as good as not on the pitch, we're effectively playing with 9 men. Well, 8, if you count Cleverly and Westwood as the same player, which they pretty much are.

Why on earth do we do this so often?

I have no idea how any Villa player is doing at all, it is as if there is only one team on the pitch.  For the goal they said 'a mistake there by the Palace defence, that wasn't good, and Palace are 1-0 down'. They don't even have an effects mic near the Villa fans, unless there are none of us there, as when the goal went in there was silence.  It's like listening to the commentary of an England international on 5live. They are now telling me what Guzan did wrong while being fouled by a Palace player. From where I am listening, we don't exist - it is the most relaxing listen I have had for a long time, as I have no idea what is going on for us.

Westwood has been unusually poor in possession

But the shape really isn't working because there's zero width. I imagine the idea is for bEnteke and gabby to pull wide but it's not really working

I think we need to change it. Probably cleverley off for richardson or n'zogbia

Benteke is so frustrated.
I feel for him....he's a 20-30 goal a season forward in a top team.

It is comedic, every time we clear it, it goes straight to them.

Falling back and giving the ball away all the time is what will do for us this season if we don't snap out of it soon.
Even the commentators here are saying, why would you just hoof it away, when it just keeps coming straight back.

Grealish seems to be busy favouring things on Twitter according to my timeline . .

not the best of attitudes if that is what he's up to

well he knows he's got no chance of getting on!

FFS Lambert was a good midfielder who played in some good teams, including a German footballing team of real quality. Can't he just see playing deep is not the way for us to play every single match. It's getting stupid now, we're not playing Chelsea or Man City are we?

You might think he'd look at making a change now even if just for no other reason than to waste some fucking time.

What happened, injured or suspended?  Cole out also I assume, Sanchez and Grealish in hopefully, Bacuna and Robinson to the bench.  Imagine Lambert will play Nzog or Richo instead of Jack though.
