Fifa tells me that this will finish 3-2 to Southampton. They'll go ahead courtesy of a Clark howler. We'll go 2-1 up and they'll equalise within a minute, just before half time.
Then through more comical defending grab the winner.

Predictable line-up

Them:

Forster, Clyne, Fonte, Alderweireld, Bertrand, Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Tadic, Mane, Long, Pelle

I'm guessing the Sanchez/Cleverley/Westwood trio is to flood the midfield a bit. There can't be many central pairs much stronger physically then Wanyama and Schneiderlin, so I'm guessing the extra body to to help with that.

Their front four looks very strong. If it were Shane Long against anybody else then it wouldn't look quite so good, but as it's Shane Long against us...

Probably the best line up we could have gone with, given the circumstances.  Not sure I can see us being steady enough in defence to get anything from the game though.  Here's hoping though, Come on Villa!

Okore and Clark is worrying me. Clark has mistakes in him, Okore probably can't remember how to play football.

In fact, the whole side is just meh! I really hope CNZ and TC create chances tonight, as Gabby and Weimann aren't doing it.

And let's face it, put Lambert in charge of it and they'd be where we are now.  I really think our squad is capable of anything from 6th to 10th in what's quite a poor league, put Lambert in charge and its 16th to 20th.

He was pretty ropey against Parma iirc. Took a lot of unnecessary risks that he was lucky to get away with at times, and gave possession away quite a bit. In fairness I just put it down to him getting back up to speed after so long out.

If we want a silver lining, I wouldn't swap much on their bench for ours:

Subs: Bacuna, Cole, Richardson, Bent, Given, Lowton, Grealish.
Subs: Kelvin Davis, Yoshida, Gardos, Cork, Mayuka, Reed, Targett.

I wish he'd stop playing that same predictable formation. Southamptons defence will more than likely have a very easy game. We need some unexpected magic from somewhere. Zogbia is probably the only one capable of giving us that.

They're getting a grip on the game now. We look so clueless on the ball. Southampton have opened up the pitch and they're spreading the play well. Hopefully Mane's errant final ball and finish will become a pattern of the game.

Interesting that when Southampton have the ball, the pitch looks very big, they have plenty of room to play in, and time to do it.

When we have the ball, the pitch looks very small, we have no space, and we lose it pretty quickly.

Good challenge from Clark, if a little lucky. Going down in the box in a position like that is asking for trouble. He needs to stay on his feet. The Soton player would have to have crossed. Stay on your feet, block the cross. It's especially dangerous with Dowd in charge. He might have given that.

I would put money on us being significantly better if we actually approached the game wanting to keep the ball. It's been beaten out of the players by this manager and his coaches. I have come to hate counter attack and I shouldn't because used sparingly and correctly it can be a brilliant tactic.

I have always tried to remain positive over the last 4 years, but watching us being given the runaround by Southampton, the empty atmosphere and empty seats, the lack of confidence in the players, seeing so many HandV regulars on here and not at Villa Park and me sat at home with a glass of red with my season ticket in my wallet just shows how far we have fallen and how sad the whole situation has become.

I think the best thing we can do now, having got the lead in the game, is to sit back as deep as possible, let Southampton have almost complete possession of the ball and repeatedly hoof the ball aimlessly up the field on the rare occasions we do manage to get one of our players on it.

I honestly can't see any flaw in that.

Indeed. Though I don't think Lambert does him any favours at all (aside from repeatedly playing him). Gabby's only job should be running at people. That's it. Run, run some more and always face the opposition goal. It should be written in stone.

Yep

Last year I really thought that the returning N'Zogbia could be just the lift the team needed, a bit of flair in an otherwise workmanlike team that could provide a few extra openings for the attack. That little spark to lift the whole team and get the crowd on their feet. I thought if he could just bring some of that individual magic to games, like he did at Wigan, we'd be set for a whole new Villa.

I was wrong. He's really shit.

N'Zog has to come off. We're winning, it'd be nice if we actually tried for a second. Okore has done decently as well.

He has, and if he continues to have a good game, it'll be interesting to see if he keeps his place when others come back from injury.

Zog off and Grealish on, FFS.

I don't think I can stand much more of his "head down, four paces, lose ball" routine.

Zog's a bit of a liability.
OK other than giving unnecessary free kicks, losing possession every time he has ball when we attach, misplaced passes and incapable of tackling what has he done wrong?

Zog may as well not be on the pitch.

I imagine he's going to stay on it, though, infuriatingly.

That's as poor a half as I can remember seeing from a Villa player, absolutely abysmal performance.

What I like about Zog is that he always attempts to run at defenders and attack. What I don't like about Zog is he's a bit crap at running at defenders and attacking.

I'm sure I'll regret writing this, but I have to say that, just as he did in his brief showings last year, Okore does look pretty comfortable for us at the back - he seems a pretty chilled out player, if you see what I mean, never seemingly in a fluster or a panic, good positioning.

I think that must be written in his contract:

1.1.23 - Must look confused and run forwards until lose ball or run out of play.

The problem is that even though we're winning there's no actual obvious up turn in performance or apparent plan to be better. So even if we say held on to this there is nothing to suggest we could go on a sustained run. I guess that's largely been the issue in Lambert's reign.

I think we've been pretty crap especially early on. We were hugely. After against Spurs. But the result is all important today.

N'zogbia has been awful but I've backed his inclusion in the past on the basis he's our one player who can inject some genuine final third creativity

I'd be inclined to put Lowton on for his crossing ability at some stage - right midfield

Awful through the majority again. But we take any point no matter how it comes.

We've got too many players who are passed it or not good enough. We need 2-3 good additions in January or we could go down.

Guzan MOTM for me. Clark and that new fella who's name escapes me played well in the centre of defence. Hutton was good again. Cissokho looks like an accident waiting to happen still. Sanchez was a mixture of okay and shite again. TC did okay. Westwood is mediocre. Weimann works hard but ultimately isn't good enough. Zogbia was wretched. Gabby had a good first half, forgettable second.

They weren't too great. Quite lacklustre today. Point was fair.
