Title: Brian Little's Neat Tax Ruse
Post by: paulcomben on November 18, 2014, 10:13:57 PM
Sir Brian has been appointed Director Of Football at the Jersey FA. Less a proper job and more an ingenious way of paying a flat rate of 20% income tax?

Well, he said the job "appealed to him".

Viewers of Boardwalk Empire would council caution about moving in on Joisey. As would viewers of Bergerac.

Sorry but you're not allowed to speak about Him in any tones that may be considered disparaging in anyway. Good luck Oh Messiah.

Even though people like Bono piss me off with their tax avoidance, in this case the tax implications are neither here nor there to me. He was either head hunted or applied for the job. Given the number of people looking for work in his field, doubt he was the only candidate considered. Good luck to him.

Brian Little is the only man who could live on the mainland but walk to work in Jersey.

I have a friend who lives in Jersey and affectionately describes it as 80,000 alcoholics clinging to a rock

That's a shame.  I was hoping to see him down our club again for another Q&A session. He was quite brilliant (of course) at the last one.

There are no tax implications.  It's a Jersey-based job with Jersey income tax deducted.  That may be less than the equivalent tax on a UK job, but it's enough to let the Jersey government spend what they need to run Jersey. Tax avoidance is about using offshore jurisdictions to avoid UK tax, which isn't the case here.

Brain Little doesn't need to avoid tax. Tax avoids Him.

Is the misspelling of his Christian name also intentional? ;)

You'd think I'd be able to manage that given it's my old man's name too.

Ha ha; it's mine too and I'm always getting emails at the office which start 'Hi Brain'.

Great to see him back in the game.

Could be. They were hoping at one point to join FIFA or UEFA as Gibraltar have just done, but both world bodies won't allow non-sovereign nations to join any more. Gib only got in because their application predated the rule change. So there's no chance of anybody like the Faroes or Gibraltar joining in the future, which rules out Jersey and the IOM.

You see I'm caught between two stools here.

Obviously I have as much man-love for Sir Brian as any other Villa fan but I have not been allowed to like anything to do with Jersey ever since I married someone from Guernsey!

Ooh, the draw for the Island Games Football has been made, and the IOM is in the same group as Sir Brian's Jersey.  Might have to go and watch that.  Highlight of the draw has to be the Aland v Saaremaa local derby...

The others are real, but not the Isle of Man.
