Whats up with Okore? 5th choice at the moment when he was highly thought of

Yeah I do wonder when Okore is going to get a game. It's a pretty strong Arsenal side, I really hope we turn up.

Aston Villa: Guzan; Hutton, Senderos, Clark, Cissokho; Cleverley, Westwood, Delph; Weimann, Agbonlahor, Richardson

I didn't think so actually, not relatively speaking anyway, I think we can get on top of them in midfield

I just think it's fitness with Okore. Is he playing reserve games?

Guzan, Senderos, Hutton, Clark, Cissokho, Delph, Westwood, Cleverley, Richardson, Weimann, Agbonlahor (c)

subs: Given, Bacuna, Okore, Sanchez, Grealish, Lowton, N’Zogbia.

In from the cold is Ciaran Clark which is a bit of stunner. Baker has to be injured which is a real shame. There must be some strategy to this as Clark is more left sided than Okore or Baker so maybe that came in the thinking. I'm all for rotation and picking players for certain circumstances. Let's just hope Clark does for us what Baker did last week. Okore is obviously being slowly brought back in. He's still one for the future.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Arsenal Match Thread
Post by: PaulWinch again on September 20, 2014, 02:22:56 PM
Yeah I hope it's just a case of them not wanting to rush Okore back.

No Sanchez for them in the starting line up is a bit of a plus

Baker's picked up a virus.

Same for Darren Bent. Probably why Lowton's on the bench.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Arsenal Match Thread
Post by: supertom on September 20, 2014, 02:45:12 PM
I think Okore is still a way away. In pre-season he looked very composed but did have tendancy to try his luck on the ball a bit too often and sometimes get himself into trouble. He'll have to be a bit more careful in this league. But he's a young lad with about 3 games under his belt at this level, so we'll ease him in.
It might be fitness, but at this stage, if he's 5th choice, it doesn't surprise me at the moment. Some games we are going to need him though, because he's got a lot of pace. If Hutton were to get injured, it may be worth easing him in at right back. He's played there. He's quick, and he's comfortable on the ball, and if he does fanny around on the ball and get caught out, it may not be as dangerous as if he's in the middle.

Piss awful defending for all 3. We had done really well up to the first. The third is just bloody lucky though, cross shot miss hit and Cissokho covered the Chaimberlain run behind.

Well this was the worry. How paper thin that confidence was going to be. Especially with 2 late illnesses to contend with. Have to say I started to question Sanchez a game or two back - He mat just need time to settle but I don't think he's better than what we've got. Good half hour but now we're in trouble.

Sanchez is miles off the pace

the way we crumbled is reminiscent of Lambert's reign of terror

I remarked on that when he came on last week, he looked completely lost. We might as well get Okore and Grealish on here at half time to give them game time if we are going to lose anyway

Some trademark defending for the 2nd and 3rd goals. Clark was marking no one on the second.

Can we stop the match now please.

1) Arsenal are good and by far the best team we've played this season and 2) we're not very good.

Nope, Arsenal were very ordinary til we fell to sleep.

Arsenal aren't good? No, of course they aren't.

Until they scored (gifts from our until now solid defence) they looked fairly limited to long range passes and shots to me.  They're all over us now of course, but their tails are up and full of confidence.

Just close the North Stand and we're laughing.

Sanchez needs another 6 months in the reserves to get up to speed, he's nowhere near the pace of the game and really shows how we miss Westwood.

definitely would bring Grealish in at half time, to give the crowd a boost more than anything. Maybe go to three at the back with Okore coming in and Cissokho coming off, Richardson back onto the left. There is the danger of a Chelsea style 8-0 here I reckon. Arsenal playing some lovely one touch passes around our box.

Apart from that mentalist 5 mins we looked ok overall.

Isn't that just what good teams do to us though? We conceded two in two minutes at home against them last year as well.

We would probably now need to create as many chances as we have in four and a half games so far this season in order to get something from this second half.

Blimey, that's a bit harsh.

We're not spineless or gutless.  Clark isn't good enough and Sanchez looks so slow it could be one of us in midfield!

Arsenal are exactly the wrong team to be a few behind against.   I wouldn't rule out this ending up 5 or 6.

Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Arsenal Match Thread

30 decent minutes followed by 5 minutes as bad as the 15-0 period two seasons ago, followed by a mediocre last 10 minutes. Game over.

I think we need to get Zogbia and/or Cole on now.

Sanchez is having an absolutely abysmal full debut. He's way off being ready. He doesn't know where to position himself. Doesn't know who he's marking. Is way too slow on the ball. 9 times out of 10 when the ball gets on him, before he's even come close to making a decision on what to do with it, he's been tackled. He's making Sylla look like Yaya Toure. He's got to come off because they're now carving through our middle.

Cleverely has been poor too. Despite a solid debut he's perhaps still short of a bit of confidence and he went to shite after their first goal.

I'd be tempted to take off Sanchez and Cleverley and bring on N'Zogbia and Cole or Grealish. Play a 4-2-3-1 with Delph and Rico holding. We've got to go for it now. There's nothing to lose.

We've actually really missed Westwood today (aside from obviously missing Vlaar massively too). Westy offered a bit of composure and nous from deep. No one is really coming back to start things off. Sanchez is the deeper mid, but he's been dreadful.

Just highlights our deficiences.Lack of pace in the central defence for the 1st, poor positioning by Clark for the 2nd, and unlucky by Aly for the 3rd.

I do think we are a bit unlucky tbh, should have gone 1 up, Sanchez obviously got to get up to pace, Cleverley not on the ball enough. We do need to keep the ball better, and for longer.Agreed would bring Jack on, and probably Okores as well.We have lost this game, so lets have a look at some of the younger players.

We have missed him. Westwood has looked a different player this season so far, which is why I was indifferent about Cleverly as I think they're too similar.

Sanchez looks like KEA. Which is not encouraging, but he'll take a while to settle and it's a bit unreasonable to judge him this early.

Safest bet of the day today, us losing. Always happens: win a couple, fill the ground and then concede against the run of play.

The thing that has disappointed me about Sanchez is that he rarely offers himself to be available. He has been hiding, resulting in us passing the ball back.

Our shape just went as soon as number 1 went in. Concentration, pure and simple.

Up to then, we looked quite decent.

It's a shame the virus has depleted the team that beat Liverpool. I hope that is the only reason Clark was preferred to Baker.

This game certainly does not need to non-mobility of Joe Cole - need to consider CNZ or Grealish.

Barring some sort of miracle, this is lost. We're still struggling with injuries to key players in key areas though; we don't look dangerous and the defence has three players out.

Arsenal looked, to me, like they had the measure of our midfield for a few minutes before the first goal; their movement was a lot better and our defence cannot cope with the runs Ozil and Welbeck are making.

Certainly he's obviously got ability but I think he needs easing in over the "easier" games. This is too much too soon, against a side where you have no time on the ball and have to think a couple of moves ahead. Language may still be holding him back at this stage too.

It's a really sad sight watching Sanchez today. The longer he stays on the more damage it'll do him. He's got to come off ASAP.

I could kind of see the logic in keeping him on if you base it on the the game being lost. So give Sanchez a chance to get into things. But he has been wank.

And that should have been a red.
It's been as bad an individual performance as I can remember. It's almost up there with George Weah's "cousin" and I wish I was exaggerating.
It's a huge game way too soon for Carlos.

Incredible how so many are on PL's back after a bad first half, fickle response to be expected I guess. Decent start and everybody seems to think we should be up there. As I see it we have 7 more points towards the magic 40 than I thought we'd have :)

There's that word again.

Using that word against fellow Villa fans is really low, IMO. It just makes me think you agreed with David O'Leary in his assessment of us.

Grealish has taken 20 minutes and he's already our man of the match. We're getting mullered today. We're nervy and clueless on the ball, but he looks so unfazed and composed all the time, despite the quality of opposition. I'd have absolutely no qualms about starting Grealish against Chelsea and Man City. Would the occasion be too big for him? I don't think so. He's more composed than anyone else in the side today.

You're right Monty. We all knew we'd lose a game or two in this stretch. It will be something we can learn from. The midfield balance was affected as was the defence with late changes. It has shown today. That said Arsenal are a very good team and can and will do this to others.

Something is still sorely lacking in our training work regarding possession. Our players look so clueless on the ball when they're pressed with any sort of tempo. Grealish on the ball looked an absolute class above everyone else in our side today. Totally un-rushed, totally composed and always looked like he was think a few moves ahead. He's only 12 FFS. Our other players should be keeping the ball better than they are.

Sitting back when 3-0 down was a bit McLeish.

We've ultimately been outdone by a much better side. We can't concern ourselves too much. Just move on and concentrate on the next game. Arsenal at home is always a bastard for us. We tend to do better against Chelsea, so I hope we have some confidence for that game.

Grealish should start. He doesn't waste the ball. And the sooner Benteke gets back the better.

Personally I'd have taken the gamble and pushed on. We showed in the first 30 minutes that their defence could be got at. Chambers got an early booking and we should have been bullying him all game.
I'd have fancied us to score 1-2, even if we'd probably have conceded again. I don't think pushing forward would have seen us concede another 3-4 though.

I also think it was an error not getting the ball to Grealish as much as possible.
