Who is appearing on Ghanian TV on Saturday as a pundit for the Villa - Arsenal game. He's a Chelsea fan. In his own words, "Ghana is full of Gooners so I want to annoy them by making Ars appear to beneath AV". I've got an hour or so to get some good facts to use before he leaves for the day. What shall I get him to include?
-
Nii Lamptey used to play for us and scored that wonder goal in the 5-0 win against Wigan in the League Cup.
-
Arsenal would love to have 'Champions of Europe' on their honours list like Villa.
AV founders of Football League, unlike Arsenal who didn't get into the top flight until thirty years later, and then only in return for their chairman doing something for the war effort.
AV have had more England internationals than Arse, or anyone else for that matter.
-
Yeah Perce got those one's out to him already. Also got that we have had more years in the top flight than Arsenal.
-
Come on! Is that all we've got? I feel a Delia Smith monet coming on...
-
Record FA Cup wins by a single manager - George Ramsay with 6. Wenger 2nd with 5.
-
Monet? Eh? That should be moment.
-
Can I just say you don't have to make Arsenal appear to be beneath Aston Villa, they just are
Everybody knows that
-
We were Aston Villa F.C. 40 years before they finally became Arsenal F.C.
-
We scored the first league goal at Emirates.
-
Our manager has won the Champions League. Wenger hasn't.
-
Games played at Villa Park:
Aston Villa 44.19%
Arsenal 29.07%
Draws 26.74%
First game at Villa was on Boxing Day 1904/1905 Aston Villa 3 - 1 Woolwich A in the First Division.
It will be a repeat of that score this weekend.
-
We've got a werewolf.
-
Merse loved playing for us!
-
We're 2nd now. They're 7th.
Even if they thrashed us, they will still be 1 point behind us.
-
In 1915 Arsenal were promoted from Div 2 for finishing 5th the cheating bastards.
-
Record FA Cup wins by a single manager - George Ramsay with 6. Wenger 2nd with 5.
How many more times? George Ramsay was never manager.

Don't we have the most or second most FA cup goals.
-
Most goals in a single season?
-
Attendance records?
-
We've played at Villa Park for 117 years.
They've played at their ground for 8.
-
They used to be a French team.
-
Arsenal's away form is not great, mainly due to their players not being used to playing in stadiums with any kind of atmosphere.*
Ok, I made that one up but it's probably true.
-
I heard that in the early 30's Herbert Chapman wanted to emulate our kit style for them into their colours of red body, white sleeves to match the style of Villa's kit of claret body, blue sleeves.
-
Just checked on historical kit designs and that's not borne out on there. A lovely 1892 claret and blue kit is, however.
-
Record FA Cup wins by a single manager - George Ramsay with 6. Wenger 2nd with 5.
How many more times? George Ramsay was never manager.
Wow! So we won it 6 times without a manager!
;-)
-
We were the first football team to install turnstiles.
Isn't it rumoured that Arsenal got their kit from us, I mean the way that the arms are a different colour to the main top for colour?
Villa had won both the League and the Cup 6 times before Arsenal won them for the first time.
Villa won the double 78 years before Arsenal.

Do you mean secretary. Aware me.
-
Villa have never resorted to bribery to retain top flight football
We didn't relocate 10 miles up the road to try and find a fanbase
I'll take the old Trinity over the old Marble Halls
The mural
-
The Villa badge depicts a Lion rampant and consequently the Villa mascot is a Lion thus allowing the younger supporters to identify with the club.
The Arsenal badge depicts an antiquated cannon and consequently the Arsenal mascot is a dinosaur thus I don't know what.
-
Monet? Eh? That should be moment.
Thats just the impression you gave..
-
Our highly rated CEO just left them to join us.

He was only ever secretary; this idea that he was manager is a new internet invention. Villa's first manager was James McMullan in May 1934.

Apologies & cheers. Didn't know this.

I remember reading somewhere that a committee picked the playing side ? or have I just made that up ?

The board and captain picked the team, the trainer and players decided what rudimentary tactics there were and Ramsay signed the players. The closest we had to a manager was trainer Joe Grierson, who was at Villa for 22 years during which time we won six titles and four FA Cups. There's not much know about him but I would love to find out more.

Is there anything in Archie Hunter's book Dave?

Probably, but if you can decipher it feel free.

I'm sure I've seen some old stuff wherein his title was given as Secretary/Manager.

Nothing I've ever seen and none of the historians/authors ever refer to him as such. In fact, when Billy Smith as appointed as his successor the club did advertise for a secretary/manager but Smith's eventual title was secretary.

Villa won the double 78 years before Arsenal.
That first stat depresses me. Despite our head start they lie ahead of us in both league and cup. Likewise Liverpool - I think they have also won the FA Cup 7 times, and their first was in 1965, 8 years after our last. In fact, our record in League and Cup for the last 100 years is atrocious.
Back on topic, Arsenal have never won the European Cup or Super Cup, and our club name has never been prefaced by Boring Boring....
We are called Aston Villa for a reason - we play in Aston. They are also called Arsenal for a reason - because they were ashamed of their roots and dropped the name Woolwich when they not only moved away from the area, they actually crossed the river. 12.9 miles according to the AA. That is further than Villa Park to the Bescot Stadium (10.4 miles). Or half the distance of the English Channel.
I need a drink now...
-
Aston Villa is the combination of two words, Aston, meaning the area of Aston of Birmingham ... and Villa, meaning a large luxurious residence.
Arsenal can also be the combination of two words: arse and anal.
-

To be fair to Smirker, that doesn't sound completely unlike the O'Neill years!
-
Isn't it rumoured that Arsenal got their kit from us, I mean the way that the arms are a different colour to the main top for colour?
I think when Herbert Chapman changed Arsenal's kit in the late 1920s he got shirts from Nottingham Forest.

Did Forest know about it?
Or did he just nip in the laundry and nick 'em?

Fun facts for his Ghanaian audience. It would take the average Ghanaian ninety-seven years to work long enough to be able to afford an Arsenal home ticket. Even then, it would only be a League Cup game.
Oh, and tell him Chelsea are a bunch of racists so he might want to consider picking a different team.
I suppose you could go with the Ted Drake quote "the trouble with playing abroad is people only ever want to talk about Aston Villa".
Or something like that. Dave can tell you the exact quote, it's in his book, but my girlfriend has borrowed my copy.
