Title: Aston Villa vs Newcastle United Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Chipsticks on August 20, 2014, 11:21:26 AM
It's Wednesday, there's a rare scent of optimism in the air, and we don't have a pre-match thread yet.

Team news

Villa
No fresh injuries, Joe Cole expected to be available.

Benteke (injury)
Kozak (Injury)

Newcastle
Second in the league only to (Manchester) United in injuries, with 7 players affected.

Yanga-Mbiwa (slight doubt)
De Jong (doubt, but returned to training on monday)
Tiote    (injury)
Santon (injury)
Good (injury)
Cisse (injury)
Taylor (injury)

With Newcastle losing at the weekend I think they're going to come to VP to win with a point to prove. Last season they'd probably run us over but with our new defence I fancy us for a draw at least.

1-1, Weimann and Riviere to score.

Who knows. Good result on Saturday but we are truly abysmal at home, I cant see that changing straight away under Lambert. 1-1 draw with them bossing possession and chances.

Looking at the squad from Sat the weakest link by far was Gabby, he needs dropping, we can't keep carrying him when others are putting in a real shift.

Bent & Weimann on Sat for me. I can't see it happening though as Gabby knows his place is safe no matter what.

I was at Stoke, Gabby worked his socks off, again. He is still our most dangerous forward at the moment.

Was there too WAAV - Gabby deserves to keep his place after Sat - he did work his socks off - pity he missed the good chance under pressure (from Shawcross?) though, otherwise it would have been an excellent all round performance from him.

This is a must win game. We are only 3 points off the bottom, lose this and Newcastle move level and we are as good as down as we still have to play the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, City, Man United, Liverpool and Leicester home and away.

0-3 (Whitehurst, Mirandinha, Reilly)

I noticed West Brom doing the same tribute to Jeff Astle. I guess it's sort of a backhanded compliment that fans of other clubs follow our example on it. I don't mean that with any disrespect but clearly the Support Stan thing made a mark. I'll definitely respect Newcastle's and West Brom's respective tributes but with the knowledge that we started something. in fact, wasn't that idea pitched on this very forum?

Travelling back from the south of France when this is taking place so going to have to try to find out ways to get the score without a wireless connection and without my data roaming switched on. Mind you, you won't need telling the score the last time I was coming back from a summer holiday abroad in Spain and didn't know the score against this lot until the plane touched down in Southampton. Reckon this will be 1-0 to us or 1-1 as I still have major doubts about our attacking ability and tactics at home

Our record against Alan Pardew teams is shocking....

05/06

West Ham 4 Villa 0
Villa 1 West 2

06/07

West Ham 1 Villa 1
Charlton 2 Villa 1

10/11

Villa 1 Newcastle 0

11/12

Newcastle 2-1 Villa
Villa 1-1 Newcastle

12/13

Newcastle 1-1 Villa
Villa 1-2 Newcastle

13/14

Villa 1-2 Newcastle
Newcastle 1-0 Newcastle

So that's 1 win from 11 games against him as a premier league manager and he's hardly been managing the elite.

Still recent history suggests this will either be 1-1 or 1-2. I'll go for 1-1.

We seem far more capable of getting stuck into a battle this season. But our lack of quality up front was pretty evident at Stoke.

Id be worried about us having to chase a game after having conceded early on. Do we have goals in Gabby, Weimann or Nzogbia?

Where is the quality in the rest of the pitch to create chances for them?

Newcastle with players back, 0-2 win.

I'm at edgbaston for the cricket. Anyone know if I can catch the game inside the ground somewhere?

They're a bit of a bogey side. A winnable game but a draw would be ok if we can beat hull subsequently

I reckon an unchanged side. Perhaps more 4411 with n'zogbia and Richardson wide given it's at home. But I'd keep it reasonably tight. Their main threat will be getting in behind us and stretching us so that the guy with weird hair can cause some damage.

Looks too early for sanchez

What made me laugh about that video is that twat Shearer complaining to the ref like there was any other call he could make....

Had this one down as a draw before the win over Stoke and am sticking to that now.  The home defeat last season was one of our weaker performances of the first half of the season.  There is little to pick between us and them.  As long as we beat Hull the following week then a draw here isn't too bad a result.

They looked less threatening than we did, the late 1on1 and the shot onto the bar were the only decent chances they made. They looked okay at the back and played in front of man city nicely but there wasn't much to worry about there. The kid up front looked good when he came on though.

Took my lad to his first game when we relegated them.  He thought every game would be that funny!

Newcastle are the only club that I really dislike. This stems from seeing Alan 'Butter-wouldn't-melt' Shearer kick out at Bosnich long after the ball had gone.

Therefore, being present to see Villa relegate Newcastle was also a highlight for me.

If the rumours about him wanting to leave are true then I'd say that's very likely; shame as I always had a bit of a soft spot for him.

2-0 Villa. Bringing my daughter to her first game.

Welcome back young man. Hope your Daughter enjoys the experience and Villa can get the right result for her first game.

Took my lad to his first game when we relegated them.  He thought every game would be that funny!

He was spot on then, if only for all the wrong reasons...

Us 0-2 them
Are they planning the 17th min thing all season ?

Nah, can't see us losing this one. Watched Newcastle against Man City and they looked shite. 2-1 to Villa.

Really, I must have been watching a different game for 93 minutes then.

They looked less threatening than we did, the late 1on1 and the shot onto the bar were the only decent chances they made. They looked okay at the back and played in front of man city nicely but there wasn't much to worry about there. The kid up front looked good when he came on though.

With the gap between the top teams and most of the rest it seems only fair to judge the likes of us and Newcastle against them on weather we put full effort in, have some sort of a game plan, and at least make life a bit difficult for them anything else is a bonus.

I thought Newcastle looked very good against CiŁy. Yes they lost but they were playing a far superior side to Stoke who I maintain are my dark horses for relegation. They have 2 of the horsemen of the apocalypse on board in Sidwell and Ireland .

Baker shouldn't be anywhere near a Villa bench. He needs to be moved on. Same goes for Clark. I'm afraid they are frankly not good enough at this level. It would free up the best part of Ł3m per year in wages if we could.

Roy Keane obviously knows if Clark has what it takes. I would keep him as a squad player at the moment to cover for injuries et al.

Quote
Newcastle United fans are celebrating the life of two dedicated fans this season - and we invite our supporters to join them during Saturday's early-afternoon kick-off.

Liam Sweeney and John Alder died on July 17 - two of the 298 killed in the MH17 air disaster.

They were on their way to New Zealand on a 23,000 mile round trip to see their beloved Magpies play.

This dedication was typical of the pair, who rarely missed a match and often attended youth and reserve matches too.

There was a minute's silence and tributes at their opening-day game against Man City at St James Park.

Boss Alan Pardew, assistant manager John Carver, Fabricio Coloccini and managing director Lee Charnley have attended Liam's funeral today.

As well as official tributes, Newcastle fans are applauding in the 17th minute of games - in the same way we did to show our support for the battle with cancer of Stan Petrov in the 19th minute.

We would like our fans to be aware of this touching tribute - and offer them the opportunity to join in.

I think there will be a decent walk up crowd. First game of the season and all that. Despite all of the hideous home games last season we never went under 30k for a league game. The lowest being Stoke and Norwich at just over and neither have the following Newcastle have. I reckon mid 30k is about right.

Take a look at the availability on the OS, it would take a truly enormous walk up crowd to reach mid 30 thousands.

Geordies have sold out their 2900 allocation.

Woeful home support it has to be said, as despite this we will be lucky to get much over 30k.

On to the game, I think we will lose 2-1, we need to find a way of shaking off our wretched Villa Park form but I can't see enough creativity/nous in the side as of yet.

If it is under 30k it would be hugely disappointing. I might understand it after 3 defeats on the back of last season. But not the opening game after winning last week. Even with an early kick off.

Anway, we won 2-0 that day, will take the same again. Goals could come from anywhere tbh, Gabby and Vlaar though I will go for.

It isn't just the hideous home games last season though, it's the last four seasons! Lots of fans won't be fooled by last week's performance. We have to do it consistently at home. It's also live on tv. I think there's going to be under 30,000 at VP today.
