It's Wednesday, there's a rare scent of optimism in the air, and we don't have a pre-match thread yet.
Team news
Villa
No fresh injuries, Joe Cole expected to be available.
Benteke (injury)
Kozak (Injury)
Newcastle
Second in the league only to (Manchester) United in injuries, with 7 players affected.
Yanga-Mbiwa (slight doubt)
De Jong (doubt, but returned to training on monday)
Tiote (injury)
Santon (injury)
Good (injury)
Cisse (injury)
Taylor (injury)
With Newcastle losing at the weekend I think they're going to come to VP to win with a point to prove. Last season they'd probably run us over but with our new defence I fancy us for a draw at least.
1-1, Weimann and Riviere to score.
-
Villa 2 (Geddis, Norton) Newcastle 0
-
Who knows. Good result on Saturday but we are truly abysmal at home, I cant see that changing straight away under Lambert. 1-1 draw with them bossing possession and chances.
-
is there a gtc league this year ?
-
If Malcolm Macdonald doesn't play we'll beat them.
-
Providing we keep an eye on Milburn, Beardsley and Shearer we'll be fine. 2-0, Withe and Shaw.
-
Aston Villa 4-1 Newcastle
Bouma Owen
Carew 3
-
We're due a win against these fuckers.
1-0 or 2-1
-
2-0 loss. It's the Villa way.
-
We will win - and about time too against these fu**ers!
Ever the optimist!

Second in the league only to United in injuries,
Think about that for a second.
-
Commendable draw. They looked very good in their opening match.

I actually made a spelling error and was referring to my five-a-side team, Dyslexia Untied.
-
Unfortunately we havent got much up front (unless Bent is chosen) I reckon 1-1 would be a reasonable result.
-
Do we know if they are planning anything in respect of the two supporters that died traveling to/from a pre eason game?
-
Yes. Applause in the 17th minute, I think.

please excuse my ignorance, but why the 17th minute ?

-
Us 0-2 them
Are they planning the 17th min thing all season ?
-
Phew
And I thought I was the only one that thought that also. What happened with Stan was unique and got the attention it deserved. I do not want to make light of the tragedy with flight MH17 but they should really find a new way to remember them.
Just my opinion of course
-
1 nil to us. Another clean sheet, and last on MOTD once more

I appreciate that and good luck to them if that's what they want and it helps the deceased's families and friends but as with everything the more it's done the less the impact.
-
I remember how horrible Newcastle at home was last season so I'm not holding out any hope.
-
Yes I have no issue with the 17th min. In the same way other clubs were expected to observe and respect the 19 min for Stan. Good luck to them and the grieving families and friends.

Agreed, didnt WBA do an applause in the 9th minute as part of their Justice for Jeff campaign on Saturday ?
-
I'm away this Saturday, so hope that brings us good luck! Win please Villa.
-
Last year Ben Arfa massacred Luna in this fixture. At least we won't be seeing either of them. Will Sissoko be contained by Cissokho, though?!
I'll be keeping an eye on the score from the Peterborough Beer Festival. Cheers.
-
Us 2 - 1 Them
Aaron Hughes & Steve Watson for us. Ameobi for them.
-
We're the worst team in the Galaxy at home. Draw.
-
We're the worst team in the Galaxy at home.
I think our neighbours across the city would disagree.
-
For some unknown reason they really don't like us, I can't think why..
Still one of my favourite Villa videos.
As for the game, in true Villa style we'll huff and puff and get turned over once again at Villa Park by another shit team.
A very frustrating 1-0 defeat.
-
Aston Villa 3... Bobby Moncur og, Harry Hampton (2)
Newcastle 2... Wor Jackie Milburn and a Tony Blair pen.
-
2-1 Villa - Gabby and Zog
-
1-0 Villa with Delph scoring. Another strong defensive performance too.
-
Looking at the squad from Sat the weakest link by far was Gabby, he needs dropping, we can't keep carrying him when others are putting in a real shift.
Bent & Weimann on Sat for me. I can't see it happening though as Gabby knows his place is safe no matter what.
-

I was at Stoke, Gabby worked his socks off, again. He is still our most dangerous forward at the moment.
-
Was there too WAAV - Gabby deserves to keep his place after Sat - he did work his socks off - pity he missed the good chance under pressure (from Shawcross?) though, otherwise it would have been an excellent all round performance from him.
-
This is a must win game. We are only 3 points off the bottom, lose this and Newcastle move level and we are as good as down as we still have to play the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, City, Man United, Liverpool and Leicester home and away.
0-3 (Whitehurst, Mirandinha, Reilly)
-
I noticed West Brom doing the same tribute to Jeff Astle. I guess it's sort of a backhanded compliment that fans of other clubs follow our example on it. I don't mean that with any disrespect but clearly the Support Stan thing made a mark. I'll definitely respect Newcastle's and West Brom's respective tributes but with the knowledge that we started something. in fact, wasn't that idea pitched on this very forum?
-
Oh and, I'll have us to sneak a win 2-0.
-
A hard fought 3-2 win.
Hampton, Hateley and Hitchens for us
Collier and Ferris for them
-
2-0 Villa. Bringing my daughter to her first game.
-
1-0 scrappy win, three points please.
-
2-0 win for me, Weimann and Senderos.
-
3-0 to our Villa boys.
-
Us 8 (eight) Them 0
-
The Villa 3 (Vlarr, Richardson,Cole) - Newcastle 2 ( Ant and fucking Dec)
-
And if we lose we know to blame Chipsticks for starting the thread when I had started the Stoke one and we won. Chipsticks out! (possibly)
-
Travelling back from the south of France when this is taking place so going to have to try to find out ways to get the score without a wireless connection and without my data roaming switched on. Mind you, you won't need telling the score the last time I was coming back from a summer holiday abroad in Spain and didn't know the score against this lot until the plane touched down in Southampton. Reckon this will be 1-0 to us or 1-1 as I still have major doubts about our attacking ability and tactics at home
-
We had had such a hopeless summer that I presumed we would start well (it is the Villa way).
At least a point but if we are as tight at the back as we were against Stoke we may very well win it.
-
And if we lose we know to blame Chipsticks for starting the thread when I had started the Stoke one and we won. Chipsticks out! (possibly)
What's his record like, mine is started 2 lost 2 :(
-
Scoring goals will be our problem. Having said that I'd be fairly happy with a 0-0.

1-1. Delph,scoring for us

Leeg missing a home game against a team from the north-east? Cracking!!
-
Us 0-2 them
Are they planning the 17th min thing all season ?
Nah, can't see us losing this one. Watched Newcastle against Man City and they looked shile. 2-1 to Villa.
-
3-0 Villa, easy win.
-
We'll lose. We always lose after a performance like we had at stoke.
-
3-0 Villa, easy win.
Been so long, I'm not sure I'd recognize one of those if it happened in front of me.
-
A hard fought 3-2 win.
Hampton, Hateley and Hitchens for us
Collier and Ferris for them
Seems likely.
-
2-1 Villa.
-
Our record against Alan Pardew teams is shocking....
05/06
West Ham 4 Villa 0
Villa 1 West 2
06/07
West Ham 1 Villa 1
Charlton 2 Villa 1
10/11
Villa 1 Newcastle 0
11/12
Newcastle 2-1 Villa
Villa 1-1 Newcastle
12/13
Newcastle 1-1 Villa
Villa 1-2 Newcastle
13/14
Villa 1-2 Newcastle
Newcastle 1-0 Newcastle
So that's 1 win from 11 games against him as a premier league manager and he's hardly been managing the elite.
Still recent history suggests this will either be 1-1 or 1-2. I'll go for 1-1.
-
And if we lose we know to blame Chipsticks for starting the thread when I had started the Stoke one and we won. Chipsticks out! (possibly)
The last one I started was before we beat Hull 3-1 last season so I'm on a roll myself ;)
-
We seem far more capable of getting stuck into a battle this season. But our lack of quality up front was pretty evident at Stoke.
Id be worried about us having to chase a game after having conceded early on. Do we have goals in Gabby, Weimann or Nzogbia?
Where is the quality in the rest of the pitch to create chances for them?
Newcastle with players back, 0-2 win.
-
13/14
Villa 1-2 Newcastle
Newcastle 1-0 Newcastle
Newcastle v Newcastle last season ? I'm sure that was longer ago.

it`s my mates 50th birthday on Saturday, so a few of us are having a couple of quid each on 5-0 to the villa, it`s 200/1
-
I'm at edgbaston for the cricket. Anyone know if I can catch the game inside the ground somewhere?
They're a bit of a bogey side. A winnable game but a draw would be ok if we can beat hull subsequently
I reckon an unchanged side. Perhaps more 4411 with n'zogbia and Richardson wide given it's at home. But I'd keep it reasonably tight. Their main threat will be getting in behind us and stretching us so that the guy with weird hair can cause some damage.
Looks too early for sanchez

What made me laugh about that video is that twat Shearer complaining to the ref like there was any other call he could make....
Had this one down as a draw before the win over Stoke and am sticking to that now. The home defeat last season was one of our weaker performances of the first half of the season. There is little to pick between us and them. As long as we beat Hull the following week then a draw here isn't too bad a result.
1-1
Delph for us 28 Minutes
Some french guy for them 64 Minutes

Us 0-2 them

Nah, can't see us losing this one. Watched Newcastle against Man City and they looked shite. 2-1 to Villa.
Really, I must have been watching a different game for 93 minutes then.
-
What exactly did they do against Citeh except huff and puff?
-
3-0 Villa, easy win.
Bloody hell, nothing like a scrappy 1-0 win to create over optimism. When was the last time we had a straight forward 2 or 3-0 win? 2010?
Any win would be fantastic!
-
I fear Saturday will be an early reality check.

They looked less threatening than we did, the late 1on1 and the shot onto the bar were the only decent chances they made. They looked okay at the back and played in front of man city nicely but there wasn't much to worry about there. The kid up front looked good when he came on though.
-

Why would it be a reality check if we lost?
-
3-0 home win, Bent hat-trick

2-0 Villa. Bringing my daughter to her first game.
Welcome back young man. Hope your Daughter enjoys the experience and Villa can get the right result for her first game.
-
1-1
-
I went this game last season , we were bloody awful . Okore got injured , we couldn't taken a thrown in and just kept giving the ball away Lambert owes us this one. Villa win
-
us 0 - them 1
-
I reckon this will be a 1-1 draw.

When did we last start a season with back to back wins ?
-
2-0 Villa. Bringing my daughter to her first game.

Took my lad to his first game when we relegated them. He thought every game would be that funny!

The Okore injury was a defining moment so early in our season. A foolish, God awful, pathetic pass by Westwood instigated that injury. I'm still pissed off by it.
-
According to the official site Lambert has confirmed that both Carlos Sanchez and Joe Cole will be in the squad on Saturday. Baker must be cert to lose his place on the bench, but I wonder who else will. KEA?
-

Newcastle are the only club that I really dislike. This stems from seeing Alan 'Butter-wouldn't-melt' Shearer kick out at Bosnich long after the ball had gone.
Therefore, being present to see Villa relegate Newcastle was also a highlight for me.

Alan Melt?

Brother's wedding in '99 - Newcastle away, won.
Cousin's wedding in '05 - Newcastle at home, won.
My wedding in '11 - Newcastle at home, won.
I need someone in my family to get married on Saturday.

If the rumours about him wanting to leave are true then I'd say that's very likely; shame as I always had a bit of a soft spot for him.

With the gap between the top teams and most of the rest it seems only fair to judge the likes of us and Newcastle against them on weather we put full effort in, have some sort of a game plan, and at least make life a bit difficult for them anything else is a bonus.
-
I thought Newcastle looked very good against CiŁy. Yes they lost but they were playing a far superior side to Stoke who I maintain are my dark horses for relegation. They have 2 of the horsemen of the apocalypse on board in Sidwell and Ireland .
-
I like the idea of Stoke going down ...

Baker shouldn't be anywhere near a Villa bench. He needs to be moved on. Same goes for Clark. I'm afraid they are frankly not good enough at this level. It would free up the best part of Ł3m per year in wages if we could.
-

Roy Keane obviously knows if Clark has what it takes. I would keep him as a squad player at the moment to cover for injuries et al.

2-1. Gabby and Delph.

I am glad the Villa have text me to say its a 12:45 kick off! I would have been half way down the M6 when they were kicking off for the second half!

A mate of mine has just text me saying the same (well not the motorway bit). He didn't know either.
-
I had the text but already knew it was 12.45 purely by chance. I texted a non-ST mate who didn't know the KO was 12.45, so I guess there'll be a few turning up pretty late

I thought you had pre-season imaginings of him as our new attacking midfielder (apols if it was another Lee)?

I think it will be a draw between two mediocre teams.

No, it was me. It was more of a 'vision', and one which may been fueled by stimulants.

Newcastle United fans are celebrating the life of two dedicated fans this season - and we invite our supporters to join them during Saturday's early-afternoon kick-off.
Liam Sweeney and John Alder died on July 17 - two of the 298 killed in the MH17 air disaster.
They were on their way to New Zealand on a 23,000 mile round trip to see their beloved Magpies play.
This dedication was typical of the pair, who rarely missed a match and often attended youth and reserve matches too.
There was a minute's silence and tributes at their opening-day game against Man City at St James Park.
Boss Alan Pardew, assistant manager John Carver, Fabricio Coloccini and managing director Lee Charnley have attended Liam's funeral today.
As well as official tributes, Newcastle fans are applauding in the 17th minute of games - in the same way we did to show our support for the battle with cancer of Stan Petrov in the 19th minute.
We would like our fans to be aware of this touching tribute - and offer them the opportunity to join in.

I am still not confident of winning at home under Lambert but i just have a feeling we are due a win against this horrible club and its horrible fans.1-0 to Villa
-
2-0 Weimann, Gabby
Att:34,176
-
0-1 defeat. We'll be fine, but we tend to struggle against this lot.
I'm usually optimistic, but have started this season predicting two defeats. Hopefully wrong this week as well!
-
I'm going for a 1-0 win. Bent scoring. I do hope the poor home form has been sorted. It's been going on far too long.
-
Their summer signings on the whole look really good. I'd be very happy with a point.
-
I mentioned this in the week but i thought their number 22 Janmaat was bloody awful against Man City so if we can get someone running at him (i think he was playing right back) then that might be something to exploit.
-
Att:34,176
I just looked at the online ticket selector and I'll be amazed if it is that high. I think it could be under 30k.
-

It might just be that he finds playing against Silva and Jovetic harder than playing against N'Zogbia and Weimann.

I think there will be a decent walk up crowd. First game of the season and all that. Despite all of the hideous home games last season we never went under 30k for a league game. The lowest being Stoke and Norwich at just over and neither have the following Newcastle have. I reckon mid 30k is about right.

Take a look at the availability on the OS, it would take a truly enormous walk up crowd to reach mid 30 thousands.

28-29k I reckon.
-
It will be over 30K. Unless the Jawdees only bring 200.
-
Geordies have sold out their 2900 allocation.
Woeful home support it has to be said, as despite this we will be lucky to get much over 30k.
On to the game, I think we will lose 2-1, we need to find a way of shaking off our wretched Villa Park form but I can't see enough creativity/nous in the side as of yet.

If it is under 30k it would be hugely disappointing. I might understand it after 3 defeats on the back of last season. But not the opening game after winning last week. Even with an early kick off.

I love bizarre coincidences like that. last weekend I flew home from Nigeria and only got the score whilst in the taxi home. The last time that happened was christmas when I flew home and only got the Villa score in the taxi. The team we played then? Stoke. We lost that one though.
-
36,000
1-0
Come on you Lions!
-
Going today for the first time in ages- hope some of these attendance predictions turn out to be a tad pessimistic! First home game under O' Neill was newcastle if memory serves, crowd of only about 35-36,000, cue sarcastlic whistling from the geordies upon announcement....
Anway, we won 2-0 that day, will take the same again. Goals could come from anywhere tbh, Gabby and Vlaar though I will go for.
-
Good luck today to one and all who are going to game. I have opted to go to finals day at Edgbaston today.
2-0 Don't care who gets 'em....and the Bears to win to make a great double.
-
Really looking forward to it now, think we might have to be patient while the new players bed in but I am quite optimistic for a much improved season.
Think the crowd will be down too. For example I know 3 regulars who are on holiday and 1 who is at the cricket.
-

At least two of our regular group are away on holiday.
Fickle fu**ers! ;-)
-
THe sad thing about today is that I am going to miss start of season hello to the H&V sellers :(
-
On the train now. Couple of pints before the match and hopefully another win. Defend like that this week and it is very likely as they don't look great at the back to me.
2-0 Villa. Weimann and Delph.
-
It will be close. I fancy us for another 1-0 win.

It isn't just the hideous home games last season though, it's the last four seasons! Lots of fans won't be fooled by last week's performance. We have to do it consistently at home. It's also live on tv. I think there's going to be under 30,000 at VP today.
-
38k - I am bullish!
-
Can you still just turn up and buy a ticket?
-
Team unchanged.
-
What about bench?
-
Where is the match thread if we are doing team news?
-
Cole and Sanchez both on the bench.
-
No Guess The Crowd and no Match threads...it's a fookin disgrace.
-
Started a match thread. Don't shoot me if it goes shit shaped but I do want love if we win
